This store has always had some good fabrics, but it could be stale and disorganized with the owner Larry being not very friendly and understaffing and overstressing the really knowledgeable women he hired to work there. For the past few years the store is under new management and it's GREAT. Laurie, Margot, and the other women who work there are so helpful and patient. They have reorganized the shop in a great way. They seem to have more turnover of fabric so it's worth stopping in more frequently. The shop even looks cleaner! read more

My mom and grandmother purchased fabrics from here for years. I visited this store a few times and had a good experience every time. I don't personally know the owner or staff. The staff was helpful every time. Pros 1. The fabrics are well organized in that type of fabric is organized into sections with signs. Even accessories are all organized. 2. Each fabric roll has the designer name, the cost per yard, and the size of the fabrics in width and sometimes length. 3. Honesty. If I'm working on a project and want an honest opinion about it, they helped me find alternatives. 4. The variety in here is vast. There's antique fabrics to today's fabric styles. 5. Staff is well educated on fabrics and will go the extra mile to help you create what you want through suggestions. Cons More stores would be great other than that no cons. In other fabric stores, you usually search for a fabric or two that you really like; at Banksville, as you go through the fabric selections, you have to struggle to restrain yourself from over buying. I think of it as a kind of interactive textile art gallery. Owner Larry, for reasons unknown, can once in a while come off a little testy. Don't we all at times. What a wonderful selection of chairs and patient, helpful employees. We came in looking for fabric to reupholster our kitchen chairs and being DIY dummies, the lady was super helpful in suggesting the "backing" material to iron on and stiffen up the fabric. She also gave us some helpful tips on how to place the design and shape the stuffing for the pads. (Not to mention she put with my husband's asinine comments) Loved the selection and we found what we needed immediately at a great price. read more

This store has a unique collection of high quality fabrics not found elsewhere - great selection, well organized. The staff are fantastic - helpful, knowledgeable - they inspire me to sew. I just this afternoon had an opposing experience at Banksville Fabrics! The women who work there are usually very friendly and nice but today I had to deal with an older man who appeared to be the owner or at least the Manager. He was short tempered with me and not very nice at all. As soon as I questioned his fabric sense, he became very nasty and I left. He tried telling me that my fabric was not silk and yet it was purchased as silk, he then said that a Rayon fabric he was showing to me was lighter and not as dense as the fabric on the suit I brought with me, wrong again. After this he said: "go to NY City and see if you can find the fabric you are looking for, we don't have it here" I asked if there were another fabrics store in CT and he said: "No". There are 2 other fabric stores in CT I am happy to announce, one as close as Norwalk! read more

Banksville is an exceptional place to find the most beautiful fabrics and the most knowledgeable and helpful service. I have been there several times in the past few days and found Larry to be especially helpful - he came out to my car twice to measure a chair rather than have me carry it into the store. In response to the negative comment below by the customer who wanted 30% off her zipper purchase, the signs clearly say that the 30% offer is for designer household fabrics. I know that was the case when I purchased fabric in May 2012 for my daughter's wedding - the 30% offer didn't apply. I'm sorry she had a bad experience. However, you don't find many places anymore that carry beautiful fabrics and buttons. I can't give Banksville less than five stars - they're that good! read more

Nirvana for fashion sewers! They have tons of exquisite silks and woolens, at reasonable prices. if you want to make something fabulous, this is the place to go. My only complaint is that they don't have enough everyday fabric. And by everyday I mean professional office appropriate. For instance, I wanted to make a dress in a cotton-spandex print and they really didn't have much. They really didn't have a ton of knits either - except for some amazing designer-name silk knits that I could wear for two seconds before they would get snagged on something. I have found the staff to range from extremely helpful to coldly efficient. Never rude. I'm giving them 5 stars, because although they don't have everything I could ever want, they are perfect at what they do. read more

I'm an experienced seamstress, with more than 50 years behind a sewing machine. Consequently, I've visited a lot of fabric stores across the USA, Canada, and Europe. I found Banksville recently and am very pleased to put it in my "top ten". Fabrics are in general "higher end" and natural fabrics (no polyester blends here) but incredibly reasonably priced for the quality and the selection is amazing for some items -- I can't remember the last time I've seen that many choices for pure silk and silk blend fabrics in one location. I was assisted by a gentleman who I assume was the owner and was very impressed by his knowledge of his stock and of fabrics in general (compatibility of fabric and lining, suitability to project, and even fabric care). I will say that it did require a little patience on my part to get this level of service (as the gentleman was juggling his attention between me, two other customers in the store and several on the phone) but it was well worth it to be able to tap into his expertise -- this old dog definitely learned a few new tricks on working with silk (for which she is grateful!) read more

I don't get to shop at Banksville frequently but every time I travel to CT or beyond, I make a point to stop by with a bunch of patterns I hope to make up. Last time I had in my mind I wanted to make a raincoat. Larry even took me downstairs to find just the right fabric. He has always been super helpful and patient and I considered my options and my budget each time I come. Plus, the garments I have made from my purchases have been wonderful. I joined the swatch club and have gotten swatches a couple of times, but nothing compares to the joy of browsing the store to find treasures I might not have thought about. Banksville Fabrics has the best quality fashion fabrics in CT - and I have shopped at all of the places both on line and in store. And, they are very reasonably priced (a quality wool fabric is generally 20-25+/yd; cottons, knits are less). It takes me an hour to drive to the store, but it's closer than NYC and I don't have to fight traffic to get there. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. After shopping there for 5 or so years, I have gotten to know Larry. He is very straightforward and honest in his opinions, and he knows fabric. He is polite and accommodating, and does not tell you something just because that is what you want to hear, or to try to sell you something - a rare virtue in proprietors these days. Many times he has suggestions that I find quite valuable. My only suggestion is that he install some type of easy chair to accommodate the men in our lives who must wait it out while we look at these beautiful fabrics. There are some beautiful fabrics here, but be forewarned the help is among the rudest I have ever encountered. Today I heard the owner tell a customer her idea "was going to look like hell." I went to this store today for the first time. There were signs all over the windows stating that the prices were 30% off. All I needed to buy was 2 zippers. When I went to pay for them the store clerk showed me a flyer also advertising 30% off. When he told me how much the zippers were, he quoted me a price which was more than what was marked on the zipper package. When I brought that to his attention, he told me that his quoted price was correct. I said that he was using false advertising. He very sarcastically said "well, what are you going to do, have me arrested?" I left the store without buying anything and I will not go back again. read more

This place is a gem! I went here yesterday to find new buttons for a sweater I haven't been wearing because of it's old leather buttons. Banksville has an amazing selection of buttons. After we finished purchasing the buttons we began chatting with Larry (who I believe is the owner). He's a very knowledgeable and friendly guy. He clued us in to some fabulous Ralph Lauren Cashmere and Cashmere blends by the yard which we ended up buying as throws for the couch. The same throws would easily retail at 3x as much at Bloomies. When I first went into the store after reading the reviews I was nervous about possible bad service. My experience was excellent - and it has been excellent each time since. Now I'm a regular customer and I don't know what I would do without this amazing store and fine staff. I really don't want to haul into the city every time I want fine fabric. Larry, Laura and Lise have been incredibly patient with me as I taught myself to sew over the last year. They have answered all my questions thoroughly, and explained techniques, fabrics and patterns when it was clear that I didn't know what I was doing. Plus, the last time I was in there, Larry saw me about to buy one fabric and asked, "Do you want me to show you a less expensive fabric that will work better for your particular project?" I've been a customer for over 30 yrs when I lived in the area and after I moved out of state. The woman who was willing to write a review should be ashamed. She wrote all of that to criticize a business after her own careless reading of an offer that would have saved her $7 or $8. That's pitiful. It amazes me the trouble people take to hurt others and do so almost anonymously. This company as a stellar long time reputation. I have called speculating on the right shades of velvet for custom sofas and have been welcomed and graciously supported by staff who are knowledgeable, patient and all about service. The quality, wide variety and expertise offered by this company is incomparable. Individuals on the staff are human. I find everyone responds to graciousness and courtesy and that is what I always offer. People always respond in kind. Banksville- ignore any naysayers. You know how good you are! read more
