I was in a ...DESPERATE need of repairing my Kamaka 'ukulele. The bridge that holds the..."A" string was damaged; therefore, the string couldn't stay on. When I mentioned this to my manager at work, he suggested I visit...WESTSIDE MUSIC. I was contemplating on going to Kamaka, but I was too lazy to make the drive to town. Also, I was thinking that this repair could be costly. Therefore, I decided to take my manager's advice and visit WM. I couldn't wait any longer so I called WM to see if they could assist me with my situation. Uncle Ron (owner) answered the phone and he told me to bring my 'ukulele in. So, I headed down to Waipahu the next day. Uncle Ron was nice enough to look at the damage and figure out a way to repair it. Well, it took him less than 5 minutes to repair it! Wow, he is a ...GENIUS! The buggah knows his stuff...I tell you! He also helped me tune the new "A" string that he replaced as well as the other strings by using a tuner. Then, he helped me figure out the 'ukulele chords to a song that I've been wanting to play. I let him listen to the song , and then he figured it out by ear. A small shop in Waipahu that has a small selection of used guitars, basses, and amps. I took my bass in for repair. Ron, the owner, promised he would have it repaired in two days time. And sure enough, he did. His fee was more than fare. My bass actually sounds better now than before it went in. I highly recommend Westside Music. read more

Went here for the first time to service my very old Kamaka ukulele. The owner examined it closely and determined the strings are still good and he tightened a few screws and said everything is good with no charge. I fell in love with the uke during my stay here at Hawaii, there was a music store around my area. Here was my experience on a Wednesday afternoon. AMBIANCE: Parking: Small plaza but shouldn't be an issue. Feels: It's surprisingly a popping plaza with your every day shops - coffee fixes, groceries, and all that jazz. I was driving around Waipahu when I remembered that there's a music store around the area. I found it after using google maps and it's next to a bank and it has parking! I walked in and found a tiny store - you know, the kind that you used to see as a kid. The type of store that has good prices and a nice person behind the counter. He must be the owner because he is so nice and accommodating to everyone. They have a small selection of instruments, mostly slightly off brand, but a surprising selection of guitar pedals. A cursory look around showed me that this guy provides good prices - he is not out to rip anyone off. Actually I wonder how he makes money? I found a few things that I have not found at other places and all for a low price. I overheard a few other customers and possibly a worker talking about golf. That's cool! The store has two rooms - one for guitars and another for misc things. The main storefront has a ton of stuff, so look carefully, because there's a lot! They also do consignment and buy used items. All in all, I guess this is what Good Guys looked like when they started out. Nice owner, nice store. read more

Westside Music was recently opened by Ron, who formerly managed Easy Music Center in Pearl City. The store is a small shop that carries a lot of musical accessories. He also has some used instruments - electric and acoustic guitars, amps and ukes. Ron is a great guy and will offer competitive prices on stuff that he carries. Though he doesn't have a huge instrument inventory yet, the shop has a lot of potential. It's great to have alternatives to mail order and the other local music stores, and the store covers some good territory left decades ago when Floyd's typewriters and musical instruments closed up shop in Waipahu. This is the kind of small music stores that are endangered, so it's always nice to see one of them doing business. Because of social distancing, I couldn't step foot inside store. Was interested in a particular used guitar, but the Instrument was in consignment, so the (guitar) owner wouldn't budge on the price. My husband and I originally stopped by to check out the store on a early Friday morning. We were looking for a guitar pedal for my 15-year old son. As soon as we walked in we were welcomed by the owner. He was very welcoming and friendly. We told him what we were looking for and he suggested we bring in my boy to try it out because he'll need to show him how to use it. We came back with my son Kekoa late the same afternoon. The owner was patient with him, showed him how to use it and let him get comfortable with it. He answered both Kekoa and my husbands questions. All in all, on the spot yelp reviews. You are in Waipahu, and your ukulele strings are shot. Can't keep a note, stretched in every direction, ready to break. Oh,and you are a beginner, barely able to play the thing, and miles away from being able to restring or truly tune the instrument. In the past, you would have to run to the nearest music shop in Pearl City. No more! Now we have Westside Music tucked right in our own community, ready to help. I just started to learn to play my ukulele. I've owned it for 5 or 6 years, and it has hung so nicely on my wall for this entire time. It is a beauty, and I finally realized how very wrong I was not to let it live. Unfortunately, my strings were as old as the ukulele, and did not even bother to try to sound nice. Lucky me, one of the other students in the class mentioned Westside Music, so off I went to find the store. It is in a small building right on the corner of Waipahu Depot Road and Hikimoe Street. The shop shares a tiny parking lot with a few medical offices, so I look for street parking or use the pay lot across the street. The cost for the lot is only $1 for an hour, and you can leave the car there and run into the Festival Marketplace or have lunch at one of the many restaurants nearby once you have done what you came to do, which is visit the music shop. (This paragraph is proof that I should not write reviews before I eat lunch!) The shop is small, but packed with goodies. Even better it is owned and operated by a man who knows his stock, and his business. Ron is friendly and filled with stories, and is willing to take the time you need to be sure you have what you want. His selection of instruments is small, as his focus is on the never ending accouterments that one "needs" in order to play. My strings were strung in just a few hours, so I picked them up the same day. Unfortunately he pointed out that my ukulele has a few other flaws, so I will eventually have to buy myself a new one. He assured me that it was good enough for now, as I am just a few classes in to knowing what I'm doing. Until then, I'll be happy to take it back to Ron for maintenance. read more

I have this habit of buying guitars online and I don't even play. I had 2 of them set up by Ron and he made them both "sing" and play like butter. The first was an Epi 339 and he took out the buzz while still keeping the action low. Then I brought over my baritone ukulele and he lowered the action to make it easier to play. I recently got an Epi Emperor II (Joe Pass) that had a buzz on the 1st fret. This had a floating bridge and he had it adjusted on the same day and it practically plays by itself. He charges 1/3 what other shops charge. Make him your go-to guy on your instruments. read more
