Imagine you have a 3yr old. Your searching for daycares he/she can attend. After extensive on-line…read moreresearch and reading reviews, you settle on a place Paws in Play. You make the appt for the live interview, to see if your 3yr old dog is a good fit for the daycare and if the daycare is good fit for your 3yr old dog. You walk in and everything looks ok. Your stopped at the front desk. The play area where your 3yr old will spend all of his days cannot be seen. After all your questions are answered and your feeling comfortable leaving your 3yr old at the daycare, you ask what you think would be a common question. When can I set up a time to view the area where my 3yr old will be for the next 8hrs, 3x per day? The area I'm paying for? You're then directed to go online and look at Facebook pics of the area.... I did that, but seeing the Statue of Liberty on a Facebook post is not quite the same as seeing her in person. And personally I'm just not comfortable leaving my 3yr old in a place that will not allow anyone EVER to see the space they are paying for. Suspect. Paws in Play has a policy that no owner can view the play area, EVER. Not off-peak time, not at closing, not before opening, not even Holidays. All of which I offered as possible viewing times. Suspect. Why you ask? They say to protect the dogs. Ok. Why do the dogs need protection from Humans? Paws in Play interview their dogs. I assume the dogs they accept are socialized to interact with not only each other but other humans? I wouldn't take my dog to a dog park if I knew he bit other dogs or humans. Ok policy is policy. I asked the owner if he would be willing to call me at a time where there are NO dogs at the daycare for me to view the space. And he still refused. Referred me to Facebook. Suspect. This policy and the owners refusal to accommodate what I believe is a reasonable request, while still honoring the spirit of the policy got me way too suspicious about what was back there in the play area where my dog would be. The possible condition of the area. I couldn't in good conscious leave my 3yr old at Area 51. Suspect. I would caution anyone who is thinking about Paws in Play. Anyone considering this daycare for their loved one would have to answer the question. How could you trust a daycare that forbids you to EVER see the space in person that 1. You are paying for. 2. That your leaving your loved one for days and hours. Are we putting our loved ones in Fort Knox? What is so bad back there that you don't want anyone to see? Suspect. As a business owner myself, I shared with the owner that I had called 6 other daycares just to see if this policy was common in that line of business. What I found? All 6 understood not letting the public in the area when there are a "ton" of dogs. But to not EVER be able to tour the facility? Even after hours "sounded weird". The owner harshly replied "I don't care what other people think" And from that reply it also appears that Paws in Play struggles with professionalism as well. Suspect. Sorry, I just don't trust Paws in Play. My dog is my child. I could never leave him in a space that the owner is adamant with me NEVER seeing.. Suspect.

We have brought our dog once for daycare, and once for an overnight…read more The first red flag was the secrecy about the facilities. We were told when we called for our first daycare that we'd get a tour, but upon dropping our dog off we were told they don't do tours. Why? What is Paws in Play hiding? Daycare itself is fine. Our dog came back stinking, which isn't completely unexpected from daycare, but it isn't practical for us to use this place 2-3 times a week, because after a long day of work, the last thing we want to do is give our dog a bath. Our overnight experience was terrible. When I picked the dog up the staff member handed me his food bag, which was still nearly half full. I just expected them to say he was too busy/distracted/anxious to eat. But oh no, the staff member decided to lecture me about how I have provided far too much food and how I am overfeeding my dog. She condescendingly told me that he was overweight "chunky" and if I cared about him, I'd feed him an appropriate amount. Excuse me? What school gave you a veterinarian degree? Our dog is not only on-track according to growth charts, but we measure his food per our vet recommendations. He's a bulldog, those are rolls of skin, not fat! He's built differently. While I can 100% appreciate Paws In Play's attempt to care for my dog and "advocate" for his health, they were out of line. The appropriate thing to do would have been to follow our guidelines (especially since it was just a one-night boarding), and then politely make suggestions when we picked him up. This was our dogs first time doing an overnight, it was NOT the time to withhold his normal amount of food. He was probably anxious and confused just by being there; Paws In Play didn't need to create a scenario where he was potentially hungry too. Bottom line, they tried to come from an okay place, but their execution and attitude wasn't okay. I would only use this place in a pinch, when all other options weren't available (assuming they let us back after this review). Edit: I highly recommend Wetnoze Pet Concierge in Randolph. Tell them Kendra M. (Chalupa's Mom) sent you!

Anyone who's ever adopted a dog knows the blights of bringing someone's loved (or unloved) little…read moreanimal into their home with all the other people's acquired undesirable habits. Such was the case with our little Teddy. After 3 months, my partner, Erin & I were in desperation about our rescued Cockapoo who had the mysterious pattern of barking at a "parked" guitar against the wall as though it were alternately a playmate or an enemy about to chew his face off. How he tapped each object in the room with his nose each time something was moved. Our little OCD pet! Or, his habit of refusing to eat his food while begging for people food incessantly was perplexing. But, nothing compared to Teddy's bark-a-thon held every night, starting at 3:00 a.m. when our neighbor's cats upstairs got up, every morning at 6:00 a.m. when our housemate rose, and every afternoon whenever the dogs at the park across the street played. What could make this dog bark so much? Was this OUR wonder dog who peed at the sight of of us arriving home, or in a stream on our bed as he, in confused bliss, wished us a good morning? Surely, we could have guessed he'd be this crazed when he arrived, a scampering little ball of buff-colored fluff, slightly distracted, but basically well-behaved; I mean, we read, Marley & Me. But, how could he go from bad to worse? We were confused, frustrated, reading every blog on barking, and ready to send little Ted to Boot Camp with that British Dominatrix on TV, or secretly wished for Caesar to suddenly and miraculously appear on our doorstep. But, then, we're both students, so his hefty price wouldn't fit our financial situation. And, in came Miranda Rideman, owner of Big & Little Dog, whom we found on Craigslist. What relief! :) Miranda, who has been training animals for 15 years (horses) and then training dogs for 10, has been the answer to our pleas. You think I'm being dramatic? Try explaining to your boss why you've been up since 3:00 a.m. even though you don't have a baby or haven't been partying all night. ;) That said, in comes Miranda Rideman. She's quick, smart, funny, very flexible on scheduling, quite affordable for a dog trainer, and brings a plethora of species-specific dog-knowledge which helped us re-frame Teddy's behavior as Poodle-specific. He wasn't being a neurotic ball of fluff but an ADORABLE example of the playful, curious and yes, anxious style of poodles! He was being, to quote Miranda, "Poodley!" Oh! ;) Par for the course is in the re-training of the owners. And, we owners were no different! Miranda assuaged our fears, gave us all homework assignments for each week, suggested commands which were easy for all of us to master, and speaking of master, she reminded us to take the lead, give short, quick remonstrations, and to assert ourselves. We also began to praise Teddy more for being calm, try to assuage him less when he circus-jumped into our arms at the sound of any big truck, and shock of shocks, he began to calm down. Ahhh. We have all been trained thanks to Miranda Rideman's excellent guidance, which is quite affordable for a dog trainer, and now Teddy is much more well-behaved, and his owners are more masterful, and a lot more happy. That might also be because we're getting our sleep. ;) I looked up Oprah's dog trainer, btw, Tamar Geller, (of The Loved Dog training model), and found that coincidentally, Miranda uses many of the techniques (for not barking) that Geller suggests. So, it's like we've got Oprah's trainer for way cheaper... cool! Incidentally, Big & Little Dog also offers (besides behavior modification), basic training as well as very affordable dog-walking and dog-sitting, on a limited basis. Dog-sitting means lots of walks and treats, and again, some training, so it's good for everyone! When we went away, Teddy got some additional training in socialization with Miranda's dogs, Easton and Willem. Teddy made his first friends, and we parents felt so proud! ;) A+++ for Miranda Rideman at Big & Little Dog!

We also boarded our dogs with Miranda for weekend trips several times, and they loved it! Miranda was always on time, and always got the dogs out, no matter what the weather. I was impressed by the extra care she gave to our boys. If it was super hot outside, she'd remove their blankets from their crates and make sure to leave them with fresh water for the remainder of the afternoon. We had moved and needed to find a new dog walking service for while we were at work during the day. After making what seemed like a million calls, I found OBH. OBH is totally full service, picking up the dogs, and dropping them home-while also taking them for 4-5 hours daily on adventures. Our dog jumps off the bed each morning as soon as he hears the van in the driveway. Their service is affordable, even more affordable than most dog walking services that are for 30-60 minutes. You cannot get better bang for your buck. There is a yearbook every Christmas, which is so cute and funny. We will be moving again, and won't be able to access OBH, but are so thrilled to have found them for the past few years. Can't recommend calling them enough!
