Every once in a while there will be a genuinely good deal, but more often than not, you find yourself looking at an overpriced item that is advertised as being significantly discounted from an even more outrageous price. When you realize that most of the stuff almost certainly is stitched together in some sweatshop overseas with workers that are paid maybe three cents an hour, the gouging hurts even more. On top of all this, pricing is very deceptive. For example, on several racks of clothes, items will be advertised at, say, 25% off. However, when you get up to the register, you find out that there are all of these exceptions (only certain styles of a certain brand name are discounted, even though the whole rack was advertised as being discounted). And the store seems to go out of its way to keep this information from you, presumably so that you'll just pay the higher price rather than go through the aggravation of putting stuff back. Deliberately mixing regularly priced items with discounted ones is deceptive. We went school shopping for our daughter, who can be very particular, so we were willing to pay a little more. The cashier told us we could get a 30% discount if we applied for a Kohl's Credit card. I did so. Then, we found out that the 30% only applied to certain items. That was not how it was presented to us. Yes, I could have just told them to forget it and walked out of the store, but the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth. And I really try not to be one of "those customers" that store staff have to cope with through gritted smiles. Shopping here reminds me of why I do 80% of my clothes shopping at consignment stores.

I understand wanting your store's name to spell out "really great prices, you can shop here with…read morejust a few dollars in your pocket," but this trend of naming stores "Dollar X" when they're not a dollar store is really irritating. Almost nothing in this store costs $1. Their average price is around $5. That would be fine, if their prices were reasonable, but they sell a lot of dollar store stuff, and everything is overpriced. There are $20 items in the store that I would expect to find at Target, just down the road, for $15. Oh well.

I guess he should, because Joe runs the Adirondack Kayak Warehouse (with his father I believe?). He knows all the models, he knows their features, he knows their prices, he knows what colors he has them in, and he knows what I need. Which, as someone who knows nothing about kayaks and plans to kayak a few times every summer on a very calm lake, is a more affordable option that will float, and has a cupholder. The floating isn't even that important, I just need a spot for my beverage. Our large purchase of kayaks, paddles, straps, and more may not have been that cheap (Joe and I have differing ideas of deals), but Joe was friendly and knowledgable throughout the process, and him and his guys helped us strap them into the back of a pickup so we could get to our destination without leaving a kayak on the road.
