It's pretty much a one person show from what I could see. The owner attended to me efficiently and without the slightest hesitation. I'm sorry to say that I don't speak Swedish (I wish I did I can tell you) but he was able to communicate with me and for that I will always be grateful. My plate had, if I recall correctly, four breaded and fried herring fillets. It had a coleslaw (which I found a surprising addition, creamy mashed potatoes, pickled cucumbers, red onions, and a little wedge of crispbread. I loved every bite. It was a generous plate. I particularly enjoyed eating a combination of the potatoes, cuke, onion, and fish on a corner of the crispbread as I munched away. There are a few nearby picnic type tables. So there was a place I could sit and enjoy this meal overlooking the water and a corner of the old town. If you find yourself in Stockholm, do yourself a favor and go to here. It was absolutely packed with sellers, with everything from low-end to high-end clothing to toys and books and antiques and wooden phone cases and more. It took 45 minutes just to walk through, not even looking thoroughly at each table. This year, the selection seems weak. I know that each week it's different, but I've been to the market three times this year and each time I was disappointed. I used to always walk away with something new - a sweater or dress or shoes - but I haven't purchased anything this year. There simply aren't as many sellers. I think that one reason for this may be the new focus on food trucks. The food trucks were there last year as well, of course, but there weren't as many. Now it seems that the focus is just as much or more on the food than on the flea market. Now, this isn't a bad thing per se - the food trucks are fantastic. You can indulge in crepes, Jamaican, Mexican, or a traditional Swedish fika. But if you're hoping for a second-hand shopping bonanza, you may be disappointed.

I take it the food trucks present will vary each weekend because when I was there, quite a few of the trucks listed on Matholmen's website weren't there.. hrrm. So who was there? A lot of BBQish/meat-y trucks, with burgers. A lot of Latino-ish trucks. One with donuts, one with dumplings. A crabshack. So you'd think there's something for everyone.. well I can't help but feel overwhelmingly underwhelmed by food trucks in Sweden/Stockholm. Most are, again, really meat-focused with few veggie options - usually a variation of a cheese or mushroom burger. Little to no seafood-fish trucks. Dessert? Shakes? Chocolate? Let's get all the food groups in, guys!

The worker was friendly and helpful and spoke perfect English (which we started to realize about most people in Sweden making it quite easy on the American or British traveler). I had the kanelbullar, a Swedish cardamom roll which I've come to really enjoy with a cappuccino. The cappuccino was delightful and I was good to go after about 15 minutes. Later, we learned this was famous as being Stieg Larsson's (and Mikael Blomkvist's respectively) favorite coffee shop. But it was quiet and not at all crowded to our surprise and relief. After a quick search I decided upon Kaffebar yesterday and I'm back again today! Yes, it's that good here. In Sweden they apparently don't eat pancakes or any big breakfast though! Small portions are normal here, the options are yogurt, pastries and tiny meat sandwiches. On day one I settled for an herb-bun pastry that was some sort of sweet bread, accompanied by an espresso. First off the pastry was excellent, better than American pastries, however the espresso was so good compared to my normal Starbucks routine that I wasn't sure how to take it! Day two I switched it up and asked for hot coffee with cream and grabbed a cheese croissant from the self-serve pastry bar. The barista asked "milk?," which I replied "yes!" So they do milk here, not cream. Fantastic, both options by the way. After a few sips of coffee I'm high as a kite! The croissant was ah-maaaaaazing! You can sit outside and people watch or stay inside. Today I'm inside so I can write my family back home while my buddy sleeps for a couple more hours. The icing on the cake here, noted by other reviewers, is that Stieg Larsson, author of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, frequented this joint. Who knows, perhaps I'm sitting in his seat today?
