This made it on our bookmark list because there was an episode on Vice MUNCHIES where the host stopped by here while in Stockholm. We felt like we wanted to taste what was considered traditionally Swedish, so came by to check it out. It's a no-frills food stand that sells herring. It's breaded, fried, and placed on a piece of bread with some onions. It was good - decently filling and not very expensive at all. Would I ever crave this type of food in the future? Probably not, but I was glad to try something Swedish, and I would gladly come back if I wanted a snack.
Street food is good food. My friend and I followed the locals around until we found where they at. This little shack served battered fish, pickled onion, cucumber, and potatoes. Don't let the truck deceive you, they have all the things you need and they take plastic money. Let's go back to the fish. The food is amazing. Out of all the places I ate in both Sweden and Norway, this is the winner. This tiny shack that sells fish. Amazing fish. It's making my mouth water just talking about it. Ahhh... so yes, Strömmingsvagnen's strömming have small bones which you can just eat. Don't worry, a bone didn't piece my throat. If you're ever in Stockholm, ignore everywhere else and eat here. Trust me.
Mmm!! Stumbled upon this herring stand on my first day in Stockholm, and am still dreaming about the dish. Got the standard plate with fried herring, onions, mashed potatoes, slaw, etc. It totally hit the spot and was a great mix of flavours. Price point was right, and food was very good. I usually don't like to eat at the same place more than once when I'm traveling...but this place I totally would.
A food truck in central Stockholm that was okay but did not live up to the hype. Probably the same quality and tastiness as your typical street food in SF or LA. This was my first experience with authentic Swedish / Scandinavian food and I was not left impressed. It was a solid meal that filled me up, but that was it. Strömmingsvagnen serves exclusively herring on its menu. I like herring so this wasn't a problem, but people who dislike fish will probably not be fans of this spot. Maybe it's because I've never visited Fäviken or experienced what René Redzepi has been doing, but I've never been a fan of Scandinavian cuisine. Swedish food to me has always been... "subsistence"-tasting. Some hard rye here and there. Simple cold cucumber dishes, a couple pieces of sliced fish. In that way it's similar to the stereotype of British food. You're eating it and just trying to get by, etc. I ordered the two of their popular herring dishes. The one that struck out to me was the Skaning, which I think is one of this food truck's more popular ones. Both were decently made and pretty cheap. But if you come here slightly over-hyped, you may leave wondering what it was all for.
What a hidden gem. The prices are affordable and there were a couple of benches outside the stand with a view. The fish was so fresh and the flavors blended so well. It was the perfect meal to fulfill my cravings. The owner was super friendly and answered all my questions too. Would definitely come back next time I'm back in Stockholm.
Fried herring from a food truck? Sounds sketchy, but this place is popular for a reason--it's actually really good! Stopping by one afternoon, we ordered the Skaning, which was fried herring on dark rye bread with mustard and pickled onion. The combination of flavors and textures was incredible--the crispy herring contrasted with the chewy rye bread, and the burst of spice from the mustard was mellowed by the tartness of the onion! Though a little bit pricey for what you get (also, beware of the flies buzzing all around), this is a great place for a classic snack that you can enjoy sitting on one of the many benches right outside the truck!
Tried another one, this time I asked for special with lingonberry instead of red onion. The lingonberry sweet sour taste complimented the others well, especially when the fish is still warm. Surprisingly the herrings tasted better this time, they felt fresher and more crispy.. Will definitely come back again for this classic Swedish dish!
Back again. As good as ever. And how DO the Swedes enjoy sitting at the picnic tables? It is 22 degrees. Got the usual, the herring with mashed potatoes, three sides,and a piece of rye crisp. We had the pickled cucumber, lingonberries and cremefreche salad. Nice serving but I wanted more. IT IS SO GOOD. But we are here for a month so I WILL be back. I meant to take pictures of the food but I was too anxious to eat. Friendly service as always. Nicely packed to go. We have been coming here for years and I highly recommend. read more

This unassuming food cart offered me one of the best meals I had in Stockholm. Simple, yet delicious. I'd never had fried herring like this before. I'm so glad I tried it. It's pretty much a one person show from what I could see. The owner attended to me efficiently and without the slightest hesitation. I'm sorry to say that I don't speak Swedish (I wish I did I can tell you) but he was able to communicate with me and for that I will always be grateful. My plate had, if I recall correctly, four breaded and fried herring fillets. It had a coleslaw (which I found a surprising addition, creamy mashed potatoes, pickled cucumbers, red onions, and a little wedge of crispbread. I loved every bite. It was a generous plate. I particularly enjoyed eating a combination of the potatoes, cuke, onion, and fish on a corner of the crispbread as I munched away. There are a few nearby picnic type tables. So there was a place I could sit and enjoy this meal overlooking the water and a corner of the old town. If you find yourself in Stockholm, do yourself a favor and go to here. Even if you think you don't like herring, try it this way. I bet you'd be surprised. read more
After a few days in Stockholm, we'd had some really fancy (and expensive meals), so we decided to stop at Strömmingsvagnen for dinner at the end of our day exploring Gamla Stan. Strömmingsvagnen is a food truck/cart serving all kinds of dishes with fried herring. Fried herring "burger." Fried herring toast. And more. We got one burger and one toast, and they were great. Delicious, fast, and affordable. Definitely keep this on your list for a very Stockholm meal and one that won't break the bank! A really great change of pace for our trip! read more

Fish-oriented food truck in Gamla Stan. Very lovely place to enjoy lunch in this neighborhood. There are picnic tables a few steps away to sit while you eat. I had the wrap and my dining companion had an open-faced sandwich. We were both stuffed! Definitely recommend. read more

I've never been a huge fan of herring before but I kinda dig it here! The fried herring was cooked well and went perfectly with the mashed potatoes and lingonberry sauce. Super cheap and quick meal. read more

Tried another one, this time I asked for special with lingonberry instead of red onion. The lingonberry sweet sour taste complimented the others well, especially when the fish is still warm. We finally found some street food in Stockholm! If you want some no frills food that's comforting, filling, and inexpensive, it's worth taking a walk to visit this food stand located right outside the Slussen metro station. You order from the window on the right and choose your accessories and receive your plate from the window on the left. They have some tables and chairs next to the food stand and a counter attached to the stand itself. For 75 SEK (~$9 USD), you can get a decently sized plate of fried herring, homemade mashed potatoes, crispbread and three accessories (basically sides). We chose beetroot, lingonberry, and pickled cucumbers as the accessories. Eat the fried herring together with the mashed potatoes, lingonberry, and pickled cucumbers for a delicious bite. The combination really works. They have many other options on the menu including one wrapped in a flatbread, but I feel like the plate gives you the most bang for your buck. We used cash, but they do accept credit cards like most of Stockholm. If I actually lived in Stockholm, this would be one place I would frequent often. read more
I think the literal translation of this spot (which is a kiosk / food stand right by the water) is "fresh fried herring". The night before we did a marathon-length wander through Stockholm, my friend had identified this as a possible spot to visit, a Time Magazine Top 10, in fact. When crossing over from Sodermalm we spotted the little yellow stand surrounded by Swedes (tip-off: the white-blonde hair) of all ages taking shelter from the midday downpour. We joined the crew. And launched into an order. Two open-faced sandwiches with fried herring, dill and a sweet-sour mustard sauce. One sandwich stuffed with fried herring, cabbage salad, and onion on a warm bready roll. We enacted the visual description of "scarfing". I didn't even know I liked herring. Now I do. Warm, crispy, multi-textured from the "food accessories" (others include options like a creamy sauce and pickled cucumbers and lingonberry sauce) and...perfect. Yelp note: not just a cheap eats option, but also a listed place "where chefs eat" if that gets your culinary juices a-flowing. read more

I was so happy to have found the Herring Wagon!!! The prices were amazing and I had a very delicious plate of fried herring, mashed potatoes, mayo and pickled sides.. Such a huge portion, definitely filled me up. You have to find your own place to sit, but when in Stockholm, do as the locals do. I would most definitely come back! read more
Oh my god. Still dreaming about the potatoes. This is essentially a food truck that sells fried herring with your choice of a few sides. The herring filets are lightly breaded before being fried on a flat-top. Not completely deboned but chewed through the tiny bones and didn't get them stuck in my throat because I'm not five years old. The mashed potatoes were made by a true master - I'd gladly give up all other vegetables for the rest of my life if I could have these potatoes every day. Had the herring with potatoes, carrots, and pickled cucumber. The thin-cut pickles cut through the richness and fat very subtly - it's not like an over-seasoned dill pickle. Sat on the bench next to some Malay tourists who were enthusiastically taking photos of their food and some teenage skaters. Nice to see that the locals eat here too. read more
My friend heard told me about this place and we went really late at night. Good thing they're open till 4am! It's a tiny stand right off one of the train stops and it was delicious. I got one of their herring plates and it consisted of 2 large pieces of fried herring, mashed potatoes, pickles, onions, and knäckebröd. The potatoes were super creamy and the fish was fresh, seasoned to perfection and crisp. I was so happy to try some local cuisine! It was about $10 USD but that's dirt cheap in Sweden! If you're visiting, you must try this stand! The man working there was super friendly and the food came out fast. If I ever go back to Stockholm, I'm stopping by! read more

If you are looking for a nice outside lunch without worrying about the prices in Stockholm, this is your fish shack. Delicious plate of 3 sides, mashed potatoes, and 3 pieces of fried herring. Would return here for lunch without a doubt. For 80 SEK, this was a steal for the city. Great job read more

I love little food shacks. They almost always have the best food around and for great prices too. Paid 75 SEK each time. I liked this place so much the first time that I went back the next day for dinner. I honestly wish I hadn't. I had two very different experiences here one good and one bad, so I'll share both! The first time I went was about 11am-11:30. It's right outside of Slussen metro and has a menu in English, which is a plus! The guy working the stand was very friendly and helpful even with my lack of Swedish and his limited English. I ordered the fried herring with mash potatoes and three sides. I asked him to pick his three favorite sides for me. I find this is always a smart option, because who knows the food better than the guy who works there! It came out and I was soooo excited. The fish was cooked to perfection and those potatoes mmmm so delicious and buttery. He chose the pickled cucumber, lingonberries, and dill sauce. All three went well with the fish and the lingonberries were even tasty with the potatoes. The second time I went was about 18:30-19:00 the next day. The guy behind the counter was different and not very friendly at all. The fish was gross and falling apart, and there were a bunch of bones and scales I don't recommend the creme fraiche salad. I wish I had gotten the guys names, because it really did make the whole experience different. Would have been five stars if I had left it at my first visit.. But bones and scales really ruin a meal, lol. read more

Thank you Yelpers for the recommendation! We went to here TWICE during our time in Stockholm and both times we got the skaning for 40 kronor. As other reviewers said, it's fried herring, red onion, delicious mustard and fresh dill (literally, the guy just picked some from a living plant of dill in a pot) on rye bread. The first time we went, it was during the day and the other time on rainy Saturday night, around 6:30pm, and they closed almost immediately after. read more
SO DELICIOUS AND AFFORDABLE ITS CRAZY! Came here on a rainy day so there was no line and the owner personally walked us through the menu, gave us samples, and told us the success of his stand. Ended up ordering the herring with mashed potatoes and a side of carrots, lingonberry, and beets and it was delicious and filling. The herring was so delicately and perfectly fried while the inside was soft and lean. The skin was slightly crispy with flavor and seasoning and this fish is actually perfect with the dill mayo, picked cucumbers, and lingonberry. For 75 kr, you get to pick three sides with your fried herring. SOOO good. Can't wait to go back for more! Plus it's located right outside the slussen station! read more

It's not gourmet but as broke college kids suffering from the exchange rate disadvantage, this was a welcome feast. The smell of grease is a bit prominent, and there isn't any great area to sit down to eat (it had recently rained so the benches were wet and covered with bird poop). We got a place of the fried fish with lingonberry and red onion, walked over to a side street, and ate on the steps while people-watching. Again, the food isn't amaze-balls but it's affordable and decent enough. read more

Now THIS is street food! I was wildly enthusiastic about eating at this street stand after reading about it in my Lonely Planet guidebook and noticing that it was about ten paces from my office building (and ten paces from the Slussen T-Bana stop). 'Danger, Will Robinson!' As I waited in line, my heart anticipating the test it was about to endure, made a valiant attempt at escaping from my chest cavity. It failed. Nystekt Strömming literally means Fresh Fried Herring. Herring, notably Swedish. Fried, notably American. Fresh, just an attempt at making you feel like you're doing something good for your body. It's the best of all worlds. The Strömming comes in many forms. On a burger roll with slaw. Alone with a side of mashed potatoes. With fries. Pretty much as you would expect it. The food itself was excellent. Definitely tasted fresh. Was perfectly fried and very crispy. It was also very unique. Truly like nothing I've ever had before. I probably could've used a little more lemon or salt. I like my fried fish extra tangy or salty. I believe I could've asked for some of this stuff, but my fear of getting laughed at for looking like a tourist took over and I walked away with my tail between my legs. This is one of those stops that anyone should make when in town. I definitely plan on bringing all my friends to eat here when they come visit. read more

What an affordable, yet super delicious meal. This place is a cart located near Gamla Stan and only has outdoor picnic table seating. We ordered the fried herring plate with mashed potatoes (so smooth), lingonberries, pickled cucumbers and garlic sauce (get the garlic sauce!!). We also had the wrap, which is basically the plate wrapped up into a burrito. Both very delicious and filling. read more

So good! Inexpensive, friendly, clean, fast, delicious and in a great location. This is a food truck without covered seating - tricky on a windy/sometimes drizzling/cold day in April! - but I think the value is very worth the challenge. I got the "2/3 portion" of fried herring with mashed potatoes, coleslaw, pickles and lingonberries for 60 SKR. Hands down my favorite lunch in Sweden.
