About an hour and a half drive but well worth the trip! Saturday early afternoon and it was packed...about a half hour wait for seating was the only downside. Service was outstanding and the staff seemed to be handling multiple aspects of the jobs and helping each other out...no one just did one thing and I think that really sped up the service. Katie was our primary server and was outstanding! We ordered up a two and a three meat deal and had Campground Beans, Creamy Coleslaw, Cheesy Potatoes,, and Mac & Cheese as sides as well as a slice of Texas Toast and Cornbread as sides....oh, and Golden Corn Nuggets as an appetizer. The Corn Nuggets were good and sweet and served up with honey and a ranch sauce for dipping. The meat choices were 3) Ribs, Pork Loin, and Turkey Breast....and 2) Pork Loin and Turkey Breast. The smoke on everything was amazing and just the right amount for excellent flavors..the ribs were very meaty. Some places ribs leave you wanting but not at Watcha Smoking! The Pork Loin and the Turkey Breast were both very good as well...still tender and not dried out. I liked the Neck of the Woods sauce the best (mild tomato based) as well as the Carolina Gold sauce...it had nice kick to it. The sides were all good but the only issue was the Cheesy Potatoes were a bit dry.....I'm thinking that it must've been towards the end of the batch and had been sitting around for a bit. Cornbread was excellent, Texas Toast tops, Coleslaw was a good shredded, wet slaw, the Mac and Cheese very good, and the Campground Beans were the preferred side as they had some good chunks of smoked meats mixed in. Whatcha Smokin' continues to be our go to BBQ within reach of the Des Moines IA metro! We tend to slide in early on Saturdays for lunch right after open (1100 AM) to avoid a line or a crowd. The main entrance is along Hwy 17; that's where you'll find the host/hostess station. They built a HUGE parking lot just to the North a couple years back to accommodate capacity. The restaurant now has three sections. The main building. The clubhouse (an extension of the main restaurant). And the grain bin (offers walk up ordering for outdoor seating)... You're greeted at the host/hostess station and someone takes you to your table. Both low and high top tables and chairs inside. Picnic tables outside. We prefer the main building... The clubhouse is okay, but the acoustics kind of suck in there. It's got very high ceilings (think machine shed)... One loud party in there can ruin your dining experience if you're not in the mood for a ruckus. They can be across the room and it still sounds like they are sitting at your table. Standard table service. Your server takes care of your drink and food order. They bus your table, present you with your bill, and take your payment at the end of the meal. Cash or card. The food all comes out of the main building. They have runners to take the covered trays wherever the party is sitting. There are fountain drink stations (Coke products) and bars in both the buildings. My girlfried absolutely loves the sliced smoked turkey and the cheesy potatoes. I go for the two meat plate (up charge both meats to the quarter rack of ribs) with a salad and cottage cheese. Choice of cornbread or Texas toast. Some of the best pork ribs you will ever have! The meat doesn't really need sauced, but they have it if you want it. Mix a little of the Sticky & Sweet and the Wildfire together... You can thank me later! There's something on their menu for everyone (standard BBQ items, wings, nachos, sandwiches, burgers, salads, family platters, etc.). Make sure you check out their daily specials! And they cater too! Amazing little barbecue joint in the small town of Luther Iowa. Definitely worth the drive south out of Ames or north out of Des Moines. Do not let the store front facing the highway fool you as they have a giant clubhouse and outdoor seating right behind the building that you do not see from the road. Really enjoyed the premier BBQ joint in the greater Des Moines area in my visit to Whatcha Smokin' in the midst of a rural backdrop, this place was definitely worth the 45 minute trek from the state capital for delicious brisket, corn, slaw and sweet tea at a very affordable price. I appreciated the dual restaurant ambiance for a service side with waiters or a order at the register style. All BBQ restaurants have one or the other but not both. The meet was tender and juicy and as their name would suggest - smoked to perfection. I don't know if I'll find myself in Iowa ever again but if I do I will definitely make another pilgrimage to Whatcha smokin for the states best BBQ read more

Struggling with our recent brutal string of wickedly cold weather, we decided to try Whatcha Smokin' BBQ & Brew to add something positive. It turned out to be a spectacular visit, and this place is well worth the ride to Luther; it is a GREAT place featuring Texas-style BBQ! Our party of four could get parking quickly with a pair of lots, one in front of the venue and the other across the street to the north. They don't take reservations, and we were seated immediately when our party was present. There's a terrific vibe inside, excellent energy, and customer service. No frills, this place focuses on its food--casual attire, warm on this frigid night. The fun common area features a push-pin customer spot and a community board. Coca-Cola products. The BBQ aroma had me salivating for their food upon entering! They have daily specials, and they look great. On this initial visit, I wanted to sample what they did best, not a daily special. I was greatly rewarded! First, our server, Jenny, was tremendous! She was fun, helpful, knowledgeable, and kind, and she nailed every recommendation. Terrific throughout. We started with Golden Corn Nuggets as an appetizer, tasty sweet corn kernels fried golden brown and served with honey (didn't try) and ranch dressing (loved it). I chose a Quarter Rack of Baby Back Ribs as my entree; they were terrific. Perfectly cooked, delicious, and spectacular. I tried all their five BBQ sauces and liked Liquid Lava, Carolina Gold, and Wildfire the best. I'm usually not a big ribs person, but I decided to get what they are known for after Jenny's recommendation. Honestly, it's genuinely excellent. We spent nearly $1,000 on catering, only to be incredibly disappointed by the lack of food, poor communication, and overall experience. I rarely leave negative reviews, but unfortunately I feel obligated to share my experience. Please keep in mind that I did email them privately to try and settle this privately but they didn't respond. First, the food itself was delicious. Our guests loved it, and the quality was excellent. Unfortunately, everything surrounding the catering process was disappointing. Based on the recommendations we were given, we ordered enough protein to serve approximately 84-88 people and enough sides to serve approximately 58-62 people. Our actual guest count was only 50 people, and we also provided several additional sides and protein options from Costco. Despite ordering well above our guest count, we ran out of food immediately after guests received their first plates. There was not enough food for guests to comfortably have seconds, and it felt as though there was barely enough for everyone to have moderate first portions! Our guest list also consisted largely of older adults (65-80+) making the shortage even more difficult to understand. Communication was equally frustrating. A month before the wedding, we discovered our order had been entered completely incorrectly when we came in to pay our balance. As the wedding approached, we received no confirmation of our order despite multiple attempts to contact the business. We called twice the day before our wedding and never received a callback. Because of the previous order error, we ultimately had to spend part of our wedding day tracking someone down to confirm that our order was correct. After the wedding, I sent a detailed email outlining these concerns and requesting an explanation before posting a public review. I received no response. For nearly $1,000, I expected enough food to feed the number of guests we were told it would serve, basic communication, and confidence that our wedding order was being handled correctly. We arrived early in the evening before dinner and got in right before the main crowds started to get in line. It was a warmer day at the beginning of July. We were a group of 4. They wont seat you without your entire party present. Right on the HWY its a great stop for travelers and for motorcycle trips. They added an additional building on the west side with a cement dining patio in between the buildings. The big doors are open, the TVs are on, the netting is down to keep the bugs down while you enjoy your meal. The menu is vast. They also have nightly specials. Outdoor seating, the giant garage doors open. Great place for parties and a few drinks. Or there is the inside side (very small) that has some AC. We ordered the weekend special to share between ourselves. The special was a pulled pork sandwich with jalapeno cream cheese sauce of some sort. We got the house fries and ranch. S . smoked & saucy M - Meats O - Overjoyed on the tender brisket I stole from my friends plate. K - Keep the meats coming E - Eager to come back sooner for my own brisket D - Down to earth place in the middle of Iowa. Staff was great. We were very disappointed with our meals last evening. My brisket was certainly NOT worth the $3 up charge...it was very dry! One of my sides was "jalapeño creamed corn" and it was by no means "creamed". There was absolutely no cream in what I was served. The one good thing about our meals was my husband's "campground beans". You advertise as being "Texas Style" bbq. We have eaten in many BBQ places in Texas because our son has lived there for over 15 years. Yours does not begin to compare. Maybe we ate there on an atypical occasion? The staff was gracious and accommodating, making the entire planning process smooth and stress-free. They replied promptly and in a friendly fashion. The food was outstanding. It's no small feat to prepare large quantities and still have everything taste fresh and delicious, but they managed to do exactly that. I love to stop here when I come to Boone County, which I do often for the fantastic outdoor attractions - High Trestle Trail, Ledges State Park, Iowa Arboretum, Boone Railroad, etc. That's important to my review because I have not been here except in pleasant weather. If you love great BBQ, as it seems many people do, this is the place to be. There always seems to be a wait and then they ask where you would like to sit, with a choice of three options and usually three different wait times. The PATIO area has garage type doors that they open in nice weather and have large screens to keep the bugs out. There are TV's and a small bar. It has a sports bar feel. This is my preference and tends to have the longest wait time. The PICNIC area is just that - picnic tables outside. The wait time is usually the shortest but I believe there is a limited menu. Can be very pleasant, but can also be windy or overly sunny. The CLUBHOUSE is enclosed and has a building converted from some other use feel. There are some TV's and one small bathroom. The wait staff carry your food across the outdoor picnic area to you. It has A/C for when the weather is warm and may possibly be the best place to be in cold weather. It just has an afterthought feel about it, like they grew popular so fast they scrambled to add space. Overall, wonderful food and super spot convenient to many fun Iowa locations. read more

If you ever go to Ames Iowa, this is a must if you love BBQ. The smoked brisket can be ordered lean or fatty but to get the most flavor, fatty is the choice. So tender, juicy and flavor did not disappoint and even outdid any brisket. Also shared the BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich which was amazing as we had options of Sweet BBQ, medium, sweet and sticky, spicy and lava sweet heat bbq sauce to put on the sandwich. Cornbread was fabulous and firm. It was also busy in the full service main dining room with a 45 minute wait so we stood in line outside to order and was given a number to pick up the food when our number was called to bring back to the table. The wait was not bad at all to get the food. Advise to get here early as they run out of certain meals and call it out as they do. This was one of ghetto finest BBQ I've had, and I've been to a lot. So many choices on the menu. Meat can be ordered by the pound or nice sandwiches. Great sides to order with the meal. We were told it would be a wait to get food even though we could be seated quickly (40ish minutes) and they did not lie. We were bummed to be seated in the club house, which felt like the family zone. Service was ok and food was good but salty. I'm from TX and love brisket. I didn't expect great brisket in Iowa but this place rocks brisket! Better than many places in TX! Moist, flavorful. Good brisket doesn't need bbq sauce and this brisket didn't need it. 10/10. We also tried the baby back ribs. Very tasty, almost falling off the bone with minimal pull as I like it. A minor complaint is that they were a little dry slightly overcooked, but as I say - a minor complaint. 7.5/10. We ordered the cheese jalapeno sausage. I admit, we prefer well done sausage. This sausage was not appealing to look at, had an almost boiled appearance. But the flavor saved it, tasted much better than it looked! A bit too cheesy for our palate and not enough jalapeno bite for us. 6.5/10. We tried the creamed corn. A unique spin on this side as it unexpectedly also had Frito chips. Was good, but would prefer more spicy bite and probably leave out the chips. Mixed opinons in our group, some rated at 7/10, others at 5.5/10. The included pickles were winderful and fully in keeping with TX bbq. All in all, a great stop! I will be back during our occasional trips to the area. Quite reasonably priced. Good atmosphere too. It's 6:30 on a Sunday, so we better get her earlier next time. The order: frito pie, brisket poutine, pulled pork (woe, I wanted two of those twinkies) The food was brought over from the main building in what appeared to be Tupperware containers and... a disposable loaf pan?!? Awesome! Our son said he asked for a sandwich. Our server, who was clearly proud to be spicy, disagreed, but was willing to accommodate. She had to go back over to the main building to get it done but get it done she did. Everyone seemed happy with what they got. Several of our guests commented that it was the best barbeque that they have ever tasted. To top it off, our venue lost air conditioning, and the kitchen was so hot, but the gentleman setting up was more than gracious and kind. He worked through it with such a positive attitude. Middle of the week lunch, party of 2 and we were sat in the expanded Clubhouse area. The brisket is always good but I do find that it is better when served hot. This was not. Everything is on disposable products and the drinks are in a to-go paper cup. No refill offered. Looking at the meal that is walked across the alleyway with a plastic dome. it is not desirable. Best bbq in Iowa. Have I eaten at every bbq joint? No. But, it's the best I've had and that's several. Brisket is top notch. The sausages always have the right texture and snap that I'm looking for in the casing. Turkey? Never dry, always moist and flavorful. Desserts? Amazing. They're a MUST get to finish the meal. Make sure you get there early on Saturdays for the beef ribs, best cut on beef outside of the cheek and they do a great job. They also provide a wide variety of sauces that should satisfy everybody's tastes. Now for the negatives, and they are impactful negatives but the fact I'm giving it 5* anyways should tell you how good everything else. Pork ribs are my favorite bbq item, and they don't do good ones. Had them twice now, and both times they were dry and overdone, one time so far gone they felt like charcoal. But everything else was so damn good we went back. Other negative is the sides, they're noting spectacular and you don't go to a bbq place for the sides, but they're all just filler essentially. Again, they aren't bad, but just take away from how good the bbq is. Service is always friendly and top notch, just a really great gem outside of my few gripes. FINALLY made it to this amazing BBQ place!!! We went on a Sunday around 1pm and the wait was 40 mins, so we left to run an errand and came back and were seated right away. There are two buildings, the main restaurant and then an addition in the back that is like a massive shop with a bar and a bathroom and TVs. The overall vibe of the restaurant is rustic & fun. All of the employees were super nice. We were waited and greeted on at our table right away. We were starving so we ordered appetizer cheese curds that were crisp and yummy! We chose the three meat combo and ordered the ribs for all three meats and we ordered three sides, the baked beans, the hash brown casserole, and jalapeño cream corn. All 3 were delish! The corn def had a kick. The Texas toast was toasted and buttered perfectly. The ribs were cooked a lil too much and we got some burnt ones, but the flavor was there. We did order dessert and was surprised to see them come in a cellophane bag. I got A brownie with peanut butter frosting, I took it home to eat with vanilla ice cream. My husband got the OCP, oatmeal cream pie. Their homemade version is bigger and better than the store ones. Overall, def will be going back! read more

Very small town Luther is kind of between Ames and Boone and despite my frequent visits over the years to both, I had no idea that Whatcha Smokin' BBQ & Brew even existed. We found out through a real estate agent friend who suggested we try it out. And being a sucker for off the beaten track small town dining (such as Nitehawk Bar & Grill in Slater), I dragged my Dad and Brother along for Dinner during a recent evening. What a Find! Should we call this place the Bergen (an equally local steak place between Jackson and Windom MN) of BBQ? This place had Great Food (we had the burnt ends special), Great Service, and a nice selection of adult beverages. It could be argued that the entire BBQ complex (main restaurant and annex) is larger than Luther itself. It was certainly popular (the secret is out?), and the evening we were there, so was the capacity. The secret was certainly out! The main building has a nice dining room with garage doors for nice weather ventilation (maybe there was a gas station here previously), and a well designed take out area on the other end and to the right of the reception counter. I'm not sure what kind of outdoor seating is available on the other side of those garage doors, but I'm guessing this would be a great evening out on a nice summer day. As the menu is extensive (and hardly scratched during our visit), the daily specials enticing, and the drive through the Iowa countryside relaxing, I'm hoping to be back soon. They are the best bbq spot in iowa. You're not goin to find better brisket(especially the point) in iowa. Hell you might need to go to Texas to find better. The wings are my absolute favorite wings,smoked then fried tossed in the sweet and sticky. They do sometimes go a little crazy with how much green onion they put on top though. The ribs and pulled pork can sometimes be dry but if they are on point they are also really good. I prefer spare ribs to baby back but that's just personal preference. The fries are amazing. I feel like you either love them or hate them,they are just so different from any other fry. Baked beans are my fav side along the fires. When they first sold to the new owner the sauce went through a change and was terrible,but they seem to have that worked out and are back to having the best sauce I've ever had at a bbq joint. The sweet and sticky goes really well with all the meat and especially the wings. The brisket really doesn't need any sauce. If you get it go or dine in this is a must try spot in iowa.
