Some days the staff come to your table and take your order/wait on you, other times you're in a line ordering from the bar. The young lady working was polite enough, but never came out from behind the counter. Quite a 180 from my experience at Liquor Lovers. I picked up a bottle of Penelope Wheated and a New Riff for my shelf. I'd go back because of the selection. But the customer service is lacking like a lot of other shops throughout the metro... They say bourbon hunting and the people who do it make up a community all in itself... And part of that community is the store staff. To be personable, to strike up a conversation, to get to know your customers... Especially when good bottles cost $40-$200+ each... It's important.

My husband drives from Ames to get a specific brand of whiskey when he's craving it since nowhere in Ames carries it lol. The store is kept clean and free of any trip or spill hazards. The outside is well kept also. There isn't any garbage or cigarette butts spread around. The staff is always really helpful and pleasant to talk with. They've even offered to order something that they don't usually carry. Any time we call, they're kind and helpful on the phone and have offered to hold the specific bottle we were asking about until we arrived from Ames.

These other reviews have no right to partake in commentary on whether they like or dislike this bar as "newbies" of Ankeny. As far as dive bars go, this is it. Cheap drinks, and bartenders that will chat it up, as long as you show them you are a real person with real problems. Take some time to get to know the crew. They all have their own small town quirks. No matter how big Ankeny gets, Jake's will always remind you where this city came from. The combination of good deals, great people, and that small town head turning that may or may not occur upon the entrance of an outsider is what makes Jake's what it is. A five star bar in it's category of "dive bars" in Ankeny. Get your nose down to our level and realize no matter how far we go, we always remember where we came from. Once a hawk, always a hawk. I kind of felt a little bad for interrupting him as I was just browsing. Lol From the Western Clive West Des Moines area it was about a 35 min drive out to North Ankeny but I wanted to check out the shelves here. Love the high wooden displays that give parts of the shop an almost library like look... A lot of the bourbon and whiskey is standard to what you can find at other area shops. Pricing is on par or just a couple of dollars higher. I can see the convenience of this shop to the residents of Northern Ankeny. It's really the only liquor store in the area. There is Costco, but the 10-15 min drive back to Neighborhood or longer to Liquor Lovers would be a pain if you just need to run in and grab something. Nothing screamed "Buy me!" so I walked out empty handed. With it being the haul that it is for me from my home base in the metro (and the speed trap they were running between 1st and 36th on I35) I doubt that I make a special trip back to Sip N Burn, but I won't hesitate to swing in again if I am in the area.
