OK let's start off with the good and we'll trickle down to the bad. The ambience of the restaurant was beautiful, Clean and quite relaxing with candlelight atmosphere. The service was from the start a little rushed because we are American as visiting and we did not know the times of the closing for ordering food but we were allowed to still see it make a quick choice and we chose fajitas for two the service as I stayed, it was very quick, and the food came out 20 minutes later, the chicken and vegetables were perfect but the steak was undercooked with a lot of pink. I would say that was rare with my husband and I did not like and as soon as we could, we ask for our servicer to just put the meat back on the grill and we will be OK, she said the grill was close and she would still ask if that was possible. She came back 10 minutes later and said no the grill is closed We were very disappointed because for one we weren't asked how we wanted our steaks cooked. And two no one seem to care about the miscommunication, so we asked to speak to the manager about the issue and it took her about 20 minutes and we expressed what the issue was and she stated that first the kitchen was closed for the evening and usually they just automatically cook the steak the way they like they don't ask people how they want their food cooked, so I was like well you do know everybody doesn't like the same thing. You would think when it comes to something as pricey as a steak that you would want to ask what the customer prefer to make a very happy experience. In the end the meal could've been great if the steaks had been cooked to our liking. The manager apologized and agreed to take off 50% of the bill after all that the experience was disappointing. Was quite fortunate to happen upon this establishment. I was just being a hungry tourist looking for a decent meal. The wind kicked up, and suddenly a brief snow flurry forced me to seek shelter. I opened the door to What's cooking and rode out the storm. Beer was refreshing, and the Cheeseburger was splendid. (Me trying to sound British) Atmosphere within is invigorating. On what was an otherwise fantastic day trip to Liverpool, lunch ended up being pretty disappointing unfortunately. This bar and grill on Albert Dock was convenient for us to head to before we caught the ferry from Pier Head over to Spaceport, so we ventured over in search of a quick bite to eat. With two children in tow, I was hoping there'd be a decent children's menu, but they were both underwhelmed by the limited choice, eventually opting for the fish fingers and the hot dog. What was served looked like run-of-the-mill convenience food that had been reheated. The fish fingers straight out of a freezer compartment and grilled. Usually avid eaters (like their uncle), both meals were left unfinished. My cheese burger, on the other hand, was good, as were the fries. Service was warm and the interior is clean and comfortable, but I probably wouldn't recommend them to other visitors to the waterfront. Famous for burgers, steaks and ribs! Yum yum. But if you don't like any of these, there are lots of other dishes to choose from. The menus change pretty regularly which I actually quite like. The idea behind the restaurant is that if you want a dish they will cater for your needs. Maybe call in a tell them what you want, just to make sure you get what you want. Does it... does it have a question mark? Are we literally asking 'what is cooking?' or is the restaurant TELLING us 'what's cooking'? Ohh, the confusion, the bewilderment when it comes to quirky names, I'm rubbish at this stuff. Thankfully the restaurant itself is NOT rubbish. Located on Liverpool's epic tourist trap, the Albert Dock, What's Cooking has an American as apple pie theme running through its veins and thus offers quintessential US fare such as burgers, steaks, combos, Tex Mex, loaded skins, pasta and meatballs, all the usual suspects in gargantuan portions. I avoided all the burritos and fajitas as I find they can be a little disappointing in American themed restaurants, but the veggie burger was not a mistake, a tomato, olive and mozzarella affair. Oh and the BBQ beans and onion rings are must-have extras. I'm a sucker when it comes to this kind of food, I'm sure in a previous life I was a sufferer of morbid obesity or something. The service depends entirely on who you get, and we experienced two different extremes - someone who had all the enthusiasm of a baby who's just found their voice for the first time and someone who clearly wanted to be anywhere but here. In restaurants such as these, family-friendly and in high profile tourist spots, you do tend to get that hit and miss vibe. Still, if you're keen to load on even more calories the puddings make up for any negatives the place might have. They do a positively sickly white chocolate and strawberry cheesecake (not for the faint of sweet tooth), the obligatory chocolate fudge cake and fudge brownie dessert, sticky toffee caramel pudding, sticky toffee meringues even, Eton mess made with fresh strawberries and panna cotta ice cream and a chocolate waffle, which is as gorgeous and disgusting as it sounds. This place was the perfect lunch spot! Something for him and something for her! The ambiance was great. Relaxed and rustic. I had a leek and potato soup starter and it was very yummy! the croutons were a bit gross but I didn't have to eat them all. Then I had a grilled chicken wrap with chips. YUM! This was so tasty and perfectly warm & Crunchy. My fiance had a bowl of chili and was loving it followed by a cured meat pizza. I highly recommend this for a lunch spot. Albert dock is a great place to visit for those not from Liverpool. On a nice day walking alongside the water can be oh so soothing. With a plethora of options in dining and otherwise. Whats cooking is one such option. Now the decor is a bit like marmite. The American diner like interior with its bright red seating you will either love or hate. I for one do think it looks little cheap. The food however is not too shabby at all. It has however won various awards in the last year, including family friendly restaurant in the Liverpool food and drink festival 2009. The food as I said is ok, and more importantly for some very good value for money. On Wednesdays for example buy one glass of wine and have free refills for rest of night....that sounds like a recipe for disaster!!! read more

I was taking a leisurely stroll around the Albert Dock, basically in search of where they used to make "This Morning" with Richard & Judy, when I came across What's Cooking. As it was lunchtime, I decided to get something to eat. There's a good range of food on the menu, and I chose the Cajun salmon with stir fried vegetables. Service was good from all staff members I encountered. You were not rushed and could take your time over a meal, without feeling like you were on a conveyor belt. My meal was fresh and well prepared. It arrives well presented and was tasty. Although I was going to be good, I caved in when I saw someone having Eaton Mess for desert. There is a very decent outlook over the Albert Dock, and staff are very pleasant, it's just some are more engaging than others. I'd return again, if only to get a view of the iconic Liver Building that I remember so well from my childhood when watching "The Liverbirds". read more

Located next to the Pan Am, this bright restaurant has a pretty big menu with something for everyone. Not your typical Albert Dock venue (bit more of a casual affair) - some diner-style booths and friendly staff. The meals we had were good, as were the desserts. Not the best restaurant I have been to but certainly not the worst. Only one problem really when we went - the lights above all of the booths flickered (either really dim or really bright) but it hadn't long opened so was probably on the list of things to fix. read more

Just before stopping in the see The Beatles Story, my husband and I stopped in for a burger. The decor and atmosphere was great, especially since the kind hostess sat us right next to a picture window overlooking the bustling dock. My bacon burger was delicious--but the sheer size was a bit unmanageable: with two beef patties and a mountain of bacon, it was incredibly difficult to keep together! Average at best. We had 2 veggie full English breakfasts. The only thing actually got on the plates were the hash browns. The plates were cold so everything else soon went from lukewarm to cold. I asked to substitute mushrooms for avocado and I got about 1/6 of an avocado...and most of that was brown and mushy. The service was really good and the staff were nice and friendly. Nice place in the Albert Dock, especially if your table has view on the Dock. The food is nice and tasty. I tried the classic chessburger with a small portion of BBQ ribs and my friend had a steak. Both the cheesburger and the steak were not something special, but the BBQ ribs were great! We also had a Ceasar's salad with chicken, which was too fatty for our taste. Nice fries too. The service was quick and the staff very friendly. Good place for a dinner, but, if you're planning to have a burger for example, there are better places to go in town or at the Dock. :) read more

This is kind of a Ying and yang review so let's start with the good bits - the food was immense omg the salted chicken wings were to die for basically they were exactly what was advertised salted and chilli chicken wings and the ribs were fall off the bone delicious hence the 4 stars- the bad bits the staff OMG talk about startled bunnies in a head light. They all looked exactly the same which isn't a bad thing consistency can be good however none of them talked above a volume of 2 and none of them gave you their name. We were kind of shown to a seat when I say kind of our menu was thrown on to a table and the waitress just walked off now being a Newbie to the restaurant my partner and I were a little unsure what to do was it table service? Wasn't it? Do we order our drinks first? Don't we? What's the name of our waitress? All of a sudden waitress number two pops out of no where to take our order and had mike (my other half) not mentioned we wanted two drinks we wouldn't have been offered these. Then when I checked in on Yoda I got offered a 20% discount (now this has never happened to me before so we didn't want it to go off my screen encase I couldn't get it back) so I asked waitress number 3 about it not one member of staff knew anything about it so one went off to ask her boss if it was acceptable and if we could use it - so mike and I played mobile phone roulette to make sure It didn't disappear off my screen only it's not easy eating finger food messy finger food and keep tapping your mobile screen!
