We arrived right before the lunch rush and I can see why it is such a popular establishment! Upon entering we were immediately put at ease with the warmth of the decor. A kind and lovely woman welcomed us and explained how to order (little slips you fill out for your customized pizza) as it was obvious it was our first time. Walking back to our seats after ordering I peeked at another customer's pizza and liked what I saw. Waiting in anticipation for our pepperoni pizza to arrive, I tried to temper my expectations. However, I am pleased to report that we were not disappointed at all with the quality of the ingredients, the texture of the crust, and the cheese pull. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the pizza and my only regret is that I do not live closer to Childress to enjoy the pizza (and other delicious bread/bakery items) frequently. One novel item for me was that while waiting my turn to sign the guest book I saw "Sweet Water" next to the iced tea options. So if you are interested in that, it appears to be available here. On our drive to Colorado, we stopped at W.A.B & this time, we tried their pizza. The pizza was solid! Their homemade crust is delish & they put just the right amount of red sauce to compliment & not overpower the toppings. The cookies, however, are still THE BEST hands down (as stated in my previous post). Delicious pizza! The bread for the sandwiches was baked fresh and you could tell. Only downside was we came in a large group and figuring out how to order was a bit confusing, but once we figured out how to use their order sheets it was better. The food was 100% worth it. Just a sweet little bakery in the middle of a sweet little Texas town. We've driven through Childress many times, but Wheat's was a caffeine lifesaver on our most recent road trip. They were the only place open (besides gas stations) that had coffee and breakfast food after the Thanksgiving holiday, so we decided to stop in and give them a try. We were immediately greeted at the door by the warm, sweet smell of freshly-baked pastries and the warm, sweet smile of the owner. She was seriously the kindest, most hospitable human I've met in quite some time. She gave us a thorough rundown of every single pastry and, having not recognized us, asked us where we were from. As we talked, she said, "I hope y'all will sign my guest book before you leave" (which we of course did). While there weren't any other patrons in the store at the time, they were packing up order upon order - I assume maybe they have some standing orders or call-in's. Our kolaches, pastry and coffee were so delicious, and we left with a smile on our faces. This is the kind of small business we should elevate and celebrate. Wheat's Artisan Bakery is amazing! During Christmas Week we stopped by this place that is located in a charming old downtown storefront. The pizza was fantastic with handmade dough baked in the oven right before your eyes. I ate one of their mouth-watering chocolate chip cookies and had to purchase a dozen. They had gorgeous, picture perfect large round bread loves baked on the premises that were sold out before I could get one. The personable owners are on the premises and are all part of the process. Stopped by this cute bakery as we were passing through - it was mid morning, so we missed out on the cinnamon rolls (kids were sad), but the savory scones were delicious! Added on the seeded bread loaf thinking we would make sandwiches with it later, but being fresh out of the oven the truck smelled delicious. So we tore off pieces to enjoy while it was still warm. There is nothing better than warm bread from the oven and the seeds were a great addition. Stop by and see what they are pulling out of the oven, I bet you won't be disappointed. Pizza was delicious, the bread was amazing and fresh, and the pies were light, buttery, and absolutely phenomenal. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Inside and out was super clean and felt warm and inviting. They aren't overpriced(I've paid much more for nowhere near as good). The jalapeño cheese bread is just mind blowingly good(I like to eat it by itself as a snack). They are all-around good. I'd give more stars if it'd let me.
