A bike shop with a community mind. While living within the Portland Metro Area, it is easy to see a whole bevy of bicycle shops with much of the same base components as Wheel Deals. But the soul of Wheel Deals is the fact that all profits for everything from labor to bike sales go to fun the attached family homeless shelter. You know when you spend a dollar there, what it is going to fun. But, this review is not to espouse their mission. No, it is to cover what is really a nice bicycle shop in the area. As Vancouver is not full of shops in the area, options are limited but Wheel Deals is moving along as a nice service center for your basic bicycle commuter or those wanting to get into cycling at an entry level price. The bulk of the bicycles operate under the $200 price range and are gone through front to back before they move out to the floor. Largely speaking, all extra parts (tires included) that are available for purchase are used. However there are new options available at standard shop rates. Labor is affordable and turnaround times for major repairs run around a week. If you are just starting out in cycling, or looking for a part for an older bike, this might just be your stop. My initial visit was just to stop in and browse but before leaving, I had my eye on a specific bike. It had not seen the "Doctor" yet and I asked if I could come back the following day at the same time to purchase it. All agreed. I came in the next day to the same people and smiles. They had my bike ready to go. I went on a couple of rides and fell in love. It was exactly what I was looking for and wanted. Needless to say, I had the best experience, start to finish. Everyone there was so friendly and knowledgeable. I was able to support my community by purchasing a Bike from Wheel Deals and a Specialized at that! If you're looking for a beginner bike you'd like to get dirty or even a veteran at biking, they've got something for you. And if they don't today, they will. They've got a great selection on the floor with dozens of back stock that they're willing to look through if you've got something in mind. I recently bought a Fuji cross 1.7 online. Most of the local shops were weeks out to build it for me. I called Wheel Deals and set up an appointment for the day following delivery. I was a bit skeptical going in, but I was met with a very knowledgeable and experienced staff and quickly realized that these guys could get it done! Boy did they! The bike was built in just a few hours and I rode home that night with zero issues and have been riding ever since. I am thrilled with their service both bike and customer. Their pricing was a fraction of the other guys and it goes to a good cause. How can you beat that? This will be my go-to shop for tune ups and repairs. Service was fast, professional, and very reasonably priced. $5 labor to change a tube and give my bike a good once over. Plus, all the proceeds go to Open House Ministries' homeless housing project next door. The shop is a bit tricky to find (it's tucked behind Open House's thrift and coffee shop), but you really should make the effort. They didn't shame me for knowing absolutely nothing about my bike, and they actually complimented my 1980's dinged up yard-sale find! We were very disappointed with our experience at Wheel Deals. My parents gifted their grandson with a trip here to pick out a bike for his birthday. The staff had advised my parents that if they phoned ahead, they would set aside a selection of bikes in the appropriate size range for my son. Once he had selected a bike, they would then refurbish/repair/service the bike and we would be able to pick it up a week later. When they arrived, there was only one bike available. The staff simply accepted payment for the bike and unfortunately, my dad did not question whether they had already serviced the bike. When they got home, we noticed that the back tire had bald spots. He went for a ride and within 15 minutes, the pedal fell off. We tried to screw it back on but it was stripped. At this point, I was beginning to question whether they had serviced the bike at all. I took the bike to a few different repair shops and was quoted $125-$175 to make it safe. Numerous issues were identified right off the bat as safety issues. The same issues were identified at each shop as essential to the bike's safety. Additionally, it needed a regular tune-up and a new back tire. While I love the idea behind this charity, if the bikes are not safe, they should not be selling them. read more
