We've all heard the horror stories regarding used car dealerships. I spent a lot of time looking for a new vehicle in Rockford. I went around to multiple used car lots/dealerships and told them exactly what I was looking to buy. Every other dealership would show me a vehicle that didn't match that criteria, in fact some were so off that I don't think the salesperson was listening. When I came to Wheels by R.T. I told them my criteria for a vehicle. The salesman was honest and said he didn't have a lot that fit my criteria, but had something that might. There was not bait and switch, there was no hard sell into something I didn't want. He took me directly to the vehicle that fit my description, and it was perfect. I ended a two month search for a new vehicle that day. I've recommended checking them out to friends that needed new vehicles. There are plenty of reasons why Wheels is a great place to buy a car from, many of which are listed in other reviews; competitive prices, clean cars, honored warranties, etc. And they're true, but what really sets them apart, and not mentioned here, are the relationships they've built with local lending institutions. There is no one size fits all auto loan, but most dealerships try to push this approach on their customers because it's self-serving. Rich's partnerships with banks allow him to build a loan with a particular lender that best serves the CUSTOMER based on the customer's needs. The history he has with Rockford lenders gives him the flexibility and leverage to negotiate the best terms on behalf of his customer. Most dealerships now treat the bank like the customer because of interest rate kickbacks. They act as if the real customer is just a necessary part of that process. I guess it's just nice to see someone actually still giving a sh*t about the buyer. read more

Attached to the car sales operation Wheels By RT has a top notch auto service department. The mechanics are knowledgeable and most importantly they are honest. We all have experienced taking a car in for repair and feeling that somehow we were taken advantage of. That does not happen at Wheels By RT. I have never been more disgusted with a car dealer than at Wheels by R.T.. Was looking for a daily driver for my daughter and our budget was only 3K. I didn't think R.T. carried something that cheap but we were across the street so we drove through. Saw a 2002 Malibu that was very clean. Talked to Brian Johnson. My daughter took the car for a test spin and liked the car. Brian told me, "in my 14 years here this is only the 2nd car we have carried at this low of a price, because it is so clean and well taken care of". My daughter returned from the test spin and mentioned a dash light was on. Brian told us it was a low windshield washer fluid light. He said they couldn't budge on the price and we left. Next day I'm tired of looking for cars and my daughter says she really liked that one. It was over our budget. I call Brian and he says he could take $180.00 off or give us some free oil changes. I specifically tell him I need the money off. Ask if my wife and daughter come in Monday morning will he be able to get her out quickly as she had to leave for school. He says no problem. They get there Monday and he says the agreed upon price, which is the wrong amount-not what we agreed upon. He now says the owner wouldn't let him take any money off the price and will give us a free oil change instead. Tells my wife they will carry the rest of the charge and we can come in and make payments. That is not what we agreed to. Daughter goes off to school-in Milwaukee. Daughter calls me on her way to Milwaukee and says two lights are now on the dashboard. Tell her after school to take it to an AutoZone and they can scan it and at least tell her what the problems could be. There was never a low washer fluid light on, it was a coolant light from the radiator-it has a leak and the engine light is on also, which could be numerous problems. Texts and a call to R.T. have went unanswered. Please avoid this place. I'm now waiting to find out this car was shipped up from one of the hurricanes states after the flooding. I wouldn't put it past this outfit. I thought the small lots on Broadway and such were the ones to stay away from. This one tops the list. Lying and deceitful. Purposely lied about the price and then when he had my wife and daughter in the office he changes the price and sells a faulty car saying it was low washer fluid. Stay away, stay far away from these crooks. read more
