When I was told that my buddy's bachelor party would include a couple hours at Whirlyball, I thought for a moment we were going to a male strip club featuring men with really stretchy.... ...Well, you get the picture. (If you don't, give it a couple years until you're in junior high school. That joke will be REALLY funny to you then.) During a random conversation with random people on the street, I brought up Whirlyball to see if any of them had ever played it. One fellow had, and warned me that I should bring lots of quarters to play video games, as he had gotten bored of it immediately So I was a bit nervous. I haven't been much for arcade games in years, since I was a graffiti kid in Los Angeles, and my 'crew' hangout was a local Mexican food joint with Street Fighter and Chopper Command. Besides, I like to keep my quarters to perform my famous "Most Awful Magic Trick in the World." Or buy 'Homies' from dispenser machines. However, I think that guy was the exception to the rule. Maybe Whirlyball wasn't "cool" enough or something. I don't know, but we all thought it was a blast. Our crowd of 18 Bachelor Celebrants descended upon Whirlyball like Moses from the mountain, except imagine, if you will, that Moses tripped on his way down and rolled for several hundred feet, sending rocks, roots, and holy tablatures descending upon his follower's heads while they worshiped a golden cow. That'll teach'em! OK, obviously it's time to make a new paragraph, as I am just totally rambling with random metaphor that even I cannot explain. Where was I... ah yes. Whirlyball. Call ahead and reserve space, and make sure to show up with at least 10 people. Five on five seemed to be the magic number. Give yourself at least two hours. Seriously. You're going to wish you had more time. When we rambled in, they brought us out onto the court and ran through the rules. The gaming field is about twice the size of a basketball court, indoors. There are two sets of bumper cars. Everyone has to fasten seatbelts and hold a racket, similar to the netted end of a lacrosse stick. You steer using a weird crank that allows you to turn, move forward or in reverse, and destroy your chest and sternum if you're speeding along and hit the wall at full tilt. You score points by flinging a ball against a pressure sensitive net a little bigger than a basketball hoop on a backboard. The two backboards are colored to match the cars (red or yellow), so it's hard to get confused and shoot at the wrong net, unless you're color blind. You're not allowed to hit other people with your racket, or even hit their racket with yours. You can pass the ball to each other, which is basically like a whiffleball and doesn't hurt (too much) if you nail someone with it. It's difficult to steer a bumper car with a crank while playing banging into other people and trying to catch or pass the ball. Shooting isn't too easy either. Honestly, athletic skill doesn't figure in too much, so if you're not 'naturally' athletic, this can still be a very fun game. With a bigger group, you're going to wind up with people sitting out. Hence the arcade games and quarters. However, they also serve beer and food; we had a couple plates of chicken strips and fries, and the food was actually pretty decent. The folks working there were pretty nice as well. For a couple of hours of pretty good fun, a couple beers, and some food, I think we each pitched in around $25. read more

I hate to rain on the parade, as all of you seem to love it so much. I used to love it as well. I used to be part of a large group of people (~30) who had what boiled down to an ad-hoc league going on and we played a *lot*. That was, however, until we noticed something... There were certain employees (refs, officials, whatever you want to call them) who developed their "favorite" players, and more to the point they developed attitudes about other players. At first a couple of us noticed but didn't talk amongst ourselves or say anything. Later (like a month or so later), during some post-wb festivities, we started comparing notes and realized that most of us were seeing the same thing. Even the "chosen ones" had to admit that the employees were being blatantly biased, and they were becoming increasingly surly (and in some cases foulmouthed) towards the ones they did not like. We tolerated it a few more weeks, then approached the employees (refs, whatever), who in response became outright surly at and took every opportunity to penalize anyone who so much as spoke a word about. Towards the end and out of the ~30 of us, there were just a few that the employees would even bother being courteous to, and the rest they just treated like crap. That's the only word for it. So a few of us approached the management, and they gave us some canned speach about it all being in fun and they were sure we were overreacting and the employees have the final say and it's all about safety first (which it wasn't, the "chosen ones" were allowed to rampage around running into people every which way...), blah blah blah. Well, that was pretty much the end of it. About half of us quit just after that and our ad-hoc league dissolved shortly thereafter. Interestingly, after we quit going and took ~30 people and their routine return business with us, both the management and some of the employees took to calling us, one after another (1 or 2 a week) for months, and all but begging us to come back. NOT. Like I said, I used to love it and initially it was a lot of fun. However, like a lot of pool halls and other such "sports" establishments, the employees are given free reign to make it personal and be a$#hol#$ about things, and that's just what they do. read more

OMFG, was whirlyball a dream!? No, it wasn't a dream, but it WAS two action-packed hours of side-splitting laughter, whooping, hollering, and screaming as we raced around the court in our speedy lil bumper cars trying to scoop up a whiffleball and throw it into an basketball-hoop-like net-thingy bingy. I've been here many times and all of the times before have been amazing. But tonight we paid for an hour (@7pm) and started 20 min late and they kicked us off at 8 after acknowledging that we started late and said we'd get additional time. If they would've admitted fault at the end, it probably would've been fine but when they lied and said we started 5 min late and said they took time to explain the rules (which they didn't because we've all played before) it was pretty sad. Make sure you clarify how much time you get if you start late. I won't be paying for a full hour if we don't get a full hour next time. read more

I am astonished by how this place treat their customers. Long story short, I made a reservation, they messed up the date and called me very rudely on the wrong date ask why I was not coming. Also, they did not book my reservation on the right time. If when I called back, they give me a sincere apology and a way to try to help me re-arranged the event, it would be fine. However, what I got was a lecture about how they handle the business successfully for the past 30 years and this is not their fault. I was planning an offsite event for my team at work and was brainstorming about possible ideas for a group of 30. If you think about it there really aren't too many options since work functions have many perameters you have to consider: -something new that they wouldn't necessarily go out and do on their own -something that keeps peoples interest -co-workers don't want to have to think to much at an offsite (a day that is supposed to be fun for them) -team work which will build team unity I had remembered hearing about Whirlyball from a friend who raved about it and after reading some of the reviews online, many had gone here on work outings as well, I decided it would be a fun thing to do with the group. Well it was a great event! We went from 11-1pm (they open at 12pm but for extra money you can have them open early) and there were 25 of us. I booked both courts so 4 teams (5 people per team) could be playing at once and one team sat out each round. Everyone was laughing and having a great time. The good thing about Whirlyball it doesn't matter what your athletic ability is since you are in a bumper car throwing around a whiffle ball and trying to shoot it into a quasi basketball hoop...I mean really. Who practices this sort of thing daily??!! I highly recommend it for a team outing. Also 2 hours is perfect, any more and you will start to feel like a rag doll being tossed around. The other nice thing was since we had reserved both courts we were the only people in the place. read more

WOW. I totally have a Whirlyball injury. But it was so worth it! This game is a blast. Perfect for corporate events since you can hit that annoying guy in HR at full on "ramming speed" all in the name of the game. Anyone can play seeing as how this is basically a "sport" in a car. They have a delightful selection of deep fried foods that go well with air hockey and foosball, and some pretty decent pizza. They had everything ready in a jiff as soon as our party showed up, and all of the staff was very friendly. Whirlyball = best. thing. ever!!!! SO much fun!! So much fun that, after spending an hour and a half playing (read: spinning around in circles while getting jostled around and laughing non-stop at the never-ending hilarity) with friends and family for my husband's 30th birthday, we immediately joined a league that was starting the next week. THAT'S RIGHT, I'm a Whirlyball LEAGUER now! (Truthfully, we were more entertained by the idea of a "whirlyball league" than anything, but it's turned out to be amazing amounts of fun! Cheaper, too. We found the staff there to be fun and helpful -- they really want to make the playing field fair in the beginner leagues and offer free workshops and tips, etc). Anyone can play and everyone will have incredible amounts of fun. It's a complete bad mood-eraser / exhilarating distraction from everyday life and just the most fun ever. Yes...you read correctly: *Whirly* *Ball* Serious leagues are formed to scoop, shoot and score all from a 2mph bumper car within a b-ball court! But our little birthday party crowd of 10 was only there to ram one another and make up random team names like "Wodkilla" and "the Besties". $300 ( includes a NON-REDUNDable $150) will get you 90 min. of court time. Drink breaks are NOT built in. So if you need to rehydrate ( wine and beer available!) remember to chug! Props to the Referee. She yelled out the plays and made the game. This place is awesome! I recently went here for a company outing and it was so much fun, every one had a blast. So much more fun than going to like a bowling alley, it allows every one to get involve and show their competitive side. What's better then bumper cars and lacross? Every one ends up a little bruised, but totally worth it. Every one rams into one another and is screaming. Great place for adults to act like kids. I do recommend having a few drinks before, might help get every one really into the spirit. read more

Had a surprise birthday for my husband and it was worth every minute! The goal is not a hole, it's a metal net that the ball hits in order to score. We recommend practicing tossing and throwing the ball against the blue wall near the bathrooms if you haven't played before. Very fun and most likely going to come again in the future! read more

OMG this is so much fun! Ben who runs the place is super helpful. The lady with cool pink highlight who was the announcer/referee was very good at what she's doing, very professional and has eagle eyes! We were group of 10 people and booked the court for 2 hours. That was perfect. We got better towards the end. I got bruised on my body the day after (I don't know how) but it was so much fun and would really love to do it again. read more

We were there for 2 hours and we got in more than enough games. There were 11 of us and each of us paid $33. There is a small arcade, a practice area, and drinks and food while you wait (only 10 on the court at a time). Food and drinks, including beer, are available for purchase. It's a hybrid of bumper cars + lacrosse + basketball. Steering is pretty difficult but that's what makes it fun (and funnier when someone gets stuck in the corner. aka me). The competition gets intense! It's also fun to just drive around in circles. This is a great activity for birthdays, homecoming groups, work events...pretty much any event! Warning: You will get banged up a little. My friend got a little whiplash soreness and I got a few bruises. WORTH IT. read more

Driving, crashing into people, and whipping a ball around at your friends! How much better can your day get? It's two teams of 5 scooting around on a court with a ball you're trying to throw at a target. We came for a team building event for work and it definitely was a lot of fun. They also offer food and drinks and beers! The hosts were great and they were definitely making sure people were having fun. They also have a waiting area where you can practice throwing the ball with the scoops so you know what to expect before mixing bumper cars into the mix. How is this not an Olympic event? Bumper cars, lacrosse, basketball all at the same timer! So much fun. I didn't really drink anything but I could easily see how that could get integrated into the mix easily. The food at the event was fine, pizza, and salad which tasted like every other pizza I have ever had at a place like this. It took me back to post game pizza parties when I was a kid actually. The staff was cool...you could tell there is a million other things someone would rather be doing then supervising a team morale event on a Thursday at noon. So bumper cars always seemed a little pointless to me, but add two targets, a lacross style racquet and a wiffle ball and, what do you know, it's a ton of fun! I brought a group of friends who were visiting and we had a blast. Blocking shots, intercepting passes, making the shot with nothin' but net, all while crashing into each other, awesome. Great idea combining the competitive essence of basketball and the fun silliness of bumper cars. Steering the cars is the hardest part to master, there's a weird crank that you rotate instead of a steering wheel, service isn't the best and for $200 for 2 hours of play, it's not the cheapest, but overall, it's an entertaining and unique activity for a fun-loving group. read more

Lots of fun and not as dangerous as I thought it would be. The ref was great too, games were extra entertaining with the play-by-play from the ref above, and she was a good sport about replacing a bumper car that was really wonky. I'm pretty sure some of them are definitely slower than others (bystanders can observe from above, next to where the ref sits). For those who are uncoordinated and consider anything remotely resembling grade school gym to be a potential nightmare, a first group outing of whirlyball, might just be the thing! For one, the combination of bumper cars and lacross-ish sticks for the uninitiated might just give everyone else the same uncoordinated disadvantage as you, as it takes a little getting used to --especially the steering. We were brought here on a little get together and we all had blast. The age group ranged from mid-teen's to established adult (can you tell I have no idea how old anyone is?). There were definitely more adults then there were teenagers and unfortunately the adults got more competitive, leaving the teenagers simply playing bumper cars. :( I'd definitely recommend similar age groups to play together, it'd probably be more fun. Anyways, as many have said.. whirlyball = lacrosse + bumpercars and it is simply awesome. Enough said. :) This place is definitely pricey, so it's not a place I'd frequent. But it'd be great for birthday parties, workplace gatherings or some simple fun times. I'd probably go eat elsewhere before or after since you're already paying a pretty penny to play. As for the smell, I had an issue with it to. But my boyfriend cleared it right up for me. The bumper cars need electricity to run and so there is constant electricity running and sparks flying causing that weird odor. I smelled it at a normal bumper car place as well, so I don't doubt it. The place is one-of-a-kind, but it's also kind of rundown. It's right on Highway 99 in Edmonds and kind of tucked behind a tattoo parlor. We were surprising the kiddos with Whirlyball, pulled into the parking lot and told them we were all getting tattoos. Hopefully you can picture it. :) read more

Whirlyball is one of those things that is amazingly addictingly fun when you first start. After your first game or session you'll be bugging your friends or co-workers trying to organize another outing. Once you've played a few times and the novelty has worn off it's not quite as insanely fun but it's still a good time. The thing that ended up ruining it for us was the refs. First off, they apparently have different levels of "juice" they can give the cars, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to who they let have the high-powered versions of the cars. Sometimes you can bribe them to get the good stuff and sometimes you can't. The bigger problem is how strict they are on enforcing their stupid rules. I understand the safety issue, but if we're not hurting anybody or the other cars who cares how we play? This isn't golf, just relax the rules already. Heh, I realize this isn't sounding like a 4-star review, but it really is a riotously fun game the first few times you play. Get a group together and head out some weekend, but don't join a league or anything lame like that. read more

Whirlyball is a good time. If you're looking to get dorky and ram your friend into a wall, all while scoring the game winning shot, this is the place for you. Some friends and I went for a birthday and had a great time. We had 90 minutes of "court" time and crammed in 5 games with a few short drink breaks. The drinks leave a lot to be desired, but I didn't come here for the booze. The last time I was here I am pretty sure I was 12 and it still looks the same, and I do think it is a little bit pricey, but it sure is fun! read more

I went and played this for a Work event. All the Employees really seemed to like their jobs and were very helpful . This place is AWSOME. Think lacrosse in bumper cars! It is a simple game and lots of fun. You need no athletic ability whatsoever. I am going to start playing in a league. WhirlyBall is fun if you can get past the WhirlyBall Overlords and the oppressive scheduling rules and play on THEIR terms. Some of our friends don't want to play very many games, but they still want to join and have fun. Others want to play a lot of games, so it has all worked out just fine in years past. The controlling overlords say you can't do that... you have to book more time than you want (which means more $$'s for them, of course) so everyone has an hour of time on the court, even if they don't want to play an hour. If you are organized, everyone can play as much as they want, but the management doesn't want you to do it that way and they have an "it's our way or the highway" mentality about it. They even told us that they would charge us EXTRA if we brought the people that don't want to play very much! So, that means those people don't get to join us and they don't get to play at all. Another fabulous aspect of their customer service is their non-refundable, non-movable, non-negotiable reservations. If it's your first time bringing a group to WhirlyBall with a bunch of people that have never played before, then having the extra time will help make sure everyone gets the time they want on the court. But, if you are experienced and organized, they should not dictate how many people can play and let you book the amount of court time you want... after all, you're paying... I think that makes you the CUSTOMER. read more

So much fun! I went here for a birthday party with a group of 12+ people. It is a lot harder than it looks to pick up the whiffle ball type thingie with the jai alai/lacrosse mitt thingie while steering a bumper car one-handed, but it is definitely an adrenaline rush when you make a goal. Even if you've never tried it, you will be playing in no time. We paid about $30 a per person for 3 hours of play, but it was worth it. You may want to rent it for less time, maybe 2 hours because you can get worn out after a while. Great for people who play team sports. There are also concessions such as beer, wine, soft drinks, pizza, hot dogs and hot wings, if you get hungry. read more

Bachelor party here and it was great! Games were epic, don't remember how much the beer was, but oddly enough I recall my skittles were $0.50. Our "ref" was pretty cool. I had driven by this place many times, wondering what the big deal was. My office set up a session for us. I was a bit 'ho hum' about it but went anyway. I am glad that I did. This is a heck of a lot of fun. The great part about it is that adults and kids can play together without any skill issues because it is easy to pick up. This is all my son talked about the rest of the day. I didn't see any problems with the ref. I wonder if the complaints I see are just people with problems with authority, or over-competitive issues. Who would have known that hiding down in Edmonds off highway 99 was this wildly fun game/sport that very few people know about. I went down there with a group of friends not knowing exactly what I was getting myself into and wow was I blown away. The game itself is a weird spin off of basketball played in bumper cars with a dash of lacrosse sprinkled in. It is an exciting, nail-biting, and entertaining game to play. The employees were very accommodating and did everything they could to make sure we had a fun and enjoyable experience. Our group decided to go with a Mexican fiesta as well with our court time and even the food there was delicious an all around great time. My advice is get down to Whirlyball now and see what your missing for the price you pay there is almost nothing that compares to the great time you will have! read more
