We were a party of 4 and had made a reservation for Saturday, Aug 23. We show up at 6 pm and no one is in the dining room. They are setting up for a wedding reception. We were told that there were no dining reservations for that evening. Whomever took the reservation, clearly put it down for the wrong date or didn't write it down at the time the reservation was made. They had to know that there was a wedding reception at the time we called. They should have told us we couldn't make a reservation on that date. But they took the reservation only for us to show up and then have to scramble to figure out where we were going to eat! Won't go back. read more

I have been going to whispering Pines for years. When I was a tiny tot, I remember going to their former restaurant in OKC with my parents. Now they have moved to Norman and I can honestly say that it is a front contender for the most delicious and well executed meal in the Oklahoma City metro/Norman area. By far it is the best French restaurant around. Now I know what you're thinking, you're saying "Ashley oh my goodness it's all the way out on Highway 9 in Norman, why would anybody ever want to drive out there?" Trust me once you have gone once you will be anticipating your return. Whispering Pines has both an Inn and a restaurant. Let's start with the restaurant. Their menu is very small, but their execution is spot on. For appetizers they offer options like shrimp cocktail ($12), escargot ($13), smoked salmon ($12), and tortellini ($10). They offer a daily soup, but their sweet corn and crab bisque, which is permanently on the menu, is my absolute favorite. It is puréed with just the right amount of texture. They offer several different kinds of salad and then a couple of entrées. Salads include a pear salad, a warm duck salad, house salad, and a Caesar salad. For entrées they offer your obvious steak, rack of lamb, fish and chicken, and my very favorite, the duck breast ($25). Whispering Pines could teach everyone a lesson on how to cook a perfect duck breast. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. They bring you a decent sized duck breast that they have pan seared, skin side down, so you get the beautiful crispy skin that duck is known for. They serve at a medium temperature with a casiss blackberry sauce. It is so, so delicious! My husband recently ordered the potato crusted salmon ($22) and was very happy with it as well. Each meal is served with their piping hot homemade rolls and herb butter, as well as scalloped potatoes and fresh vegetables. They give you a complimentary dessert for your birthday or anniversary which is always a nice touch. For dessert they offer crème brûlée, flourless chocolate cake, and a bread pudding. All of which are extraordinary. The grounds at whispering Pines are gorgeous. The bed and breakfast is in an old Victorian style house. They also have several cottages and what I assume is the caretakers personal brick home. What makes this space so great is their events center, gazebo, and vineyard all used for weddings. The entire grounds are covered with tall pine trees. It is breathtakingly beautiful and makes you wonder if you're really still in Oklahoma. I have yet to stay at the bed and breakfast but I have looked at the rooms online several times. I am sure that the breakfast they provide is out of this world. Our server David let us know that they offer a special when you stay at the bed and breakfast: if you stay on a weeknight they provide you with a free steak and shrimp dinner for two. What a deal! Hopefully I can talk my husband into going and giving it a try sometime. Whispering Pines is the perfect place for a romantic evening, special occasion, or a getaway here in Oklahoma. So get outside the norm take a scenic drive down Highway 9 to Norman. You won't be disappointed. read more

This restaurant has the best steakS I have ever ate. I've been to Gallagher in Vegas, Mahogany, Flemings, etc. Definitely in the top 3 places I have dined in my life. It is a fine dining restaurant so of course its more pricey than Outback. Howeve the prices are beyond fair for the service and food. Drinks are thoughfully made and appetizers are definitely noteworthy.. -however I'm just going to focus on the items that left a lasting impression on me.. I would suggest planning on ordering more than an entree. You don't want to miss the corn crab bisque or mushroom soup. -You could dip a piece of paper in that soup and it would be delicious. But I would suggest dipping the baked fresh daily bread ;) My favorite salad is the duck salad with ginger sesame or ginger soy dressing.. the duck is cooked perfectly and all of the supporting components pair perfectly together. Another salad I crave is the wine poached pair salad with balsamic dressing... Again everything in that salad plays well together. The caesar is a great Caesar as well. All of their dressings are house made.. prettymuch everything is "house made".. even the honey dill? butter for the bread is "house made" The steakS are dry or wet aged I don't remember but they are top notch. The filet is my favorite. Cooked perfect and flavor 5 -The sauces that the chef makes are the best I've had.. you know a good French restaurant by their sauce (this is a French Continental) If I'm not in the mood for a steak the Chilean sea bass and the orange roughly are delish -like melt in your mouth delish.. And the rack of lamb.. let me say I've had lamb about 5 times in my life and was convinced I did not like it... however gave it a try and wow.. change of heart.. creme Brulêe -wow- best I've ever had.. the texture is perfect. read more

Delicious food and a seriously romantic atmosphere. I would highly recommend it to anyone who's saved up some cash and wants to impress that special someone, lady or beau, or even a special treat for mom or dad. When I visited I happened to be on crutches with a broken foot...and in a dress. The waitstaff was helpful and courteous when I explained i needed a seat where I could put my leg up next to me and retain my privacy. They made sure we had everything we needed. read more

Absolutely amazing. I went here for my anniversary and it is 100% the best restaurant in Norman. The service was A+. Call ahead and get a table so they know whether to stay open or not. It seems to be a family business and everyone is in good spirits and is incredibly professional. The food is absolutely stupendous and so is the atmosphere. We were even offered a walk around the grounds with a complimentary glass of champagne because of our special night, but we chose the complimentary Creme Brule instead, which was to die for. The waiter even lit it in front of us. Please patronize this restaurant, it is such a lovely gem on the edge of Norman, and I wish more of Norman were like this. read more

Based on the Yelp ratings, I was expecting great things. We did not eat at the restaurant, which seems to be where the place invests its efforts. Here is a summary of our experience - perhaps these are things that can be remedied based on this post. We stayed four nights. 1. On all but one night, there were no outside lights turned on - no porch light at the entrance and no lights to light the walkway from the driveway. We came in at normal hours - around 7:30-8:00 pm. The one night they were on (so the lights do exist), was a night the restaurant was open for business. We tripped more than once between the driveway and hotel main entrance, because it was so dark. And once inside, we had to fumble around to find the switch to the staircase lights, since those were also off and we didn't want to fall on the stairs. 2. The room was only made up two of the four day we were there. So we did not have fresh towels half the time we were there and made our own bed those days (we understand that things get busy, but a note under the door explaining we would not get service would have been nice - so we could hang our towels to dry those days). One of those days, they even left the dirty breakfast dishes all evening until we said something. The response was - the girl who should have done it doesn't speak English very well. We did meet the girl on another morning, and after three attempts to understand a question she was asking, we gave up. We agree, she doesn't speak English well. Probably not ideal to put someone in a customer-facing role who does not speak English. 3. Our room was cold and there are no heat/cooling controls in the room. You could feel the cold air coming in around the windows in our room. And two of the three windows had mini blinds that you could not open and close because they didn't have rods to open and close them. 4. The breakfast was quite average. Given the reputation of the restaurant, I was hoping for more interest in the taste and the presentation. We ordered hot tea and had to drink it out of plastic glasses because we didn't get mugs. The last day there, when we were doing our sweep of the room before leaving, we found mugs in a drawer. The fruit cup was literally four pieces - one raspberry, one grape, and two small melon pieces. The setting is nice and the house itself had a cozy ambiance. It was very close to where my daughter's family lives, so for this year's visit we decided to skip the commercial hotels near the highways and opted for this B&B. We may stop in again to try the restaurant, but probably would not stay overnight again. read more

I would definitely recommend the whispering pines restuarant. Beautiful location. Very romantic atmosphere. We had the smoked salmon for an appetizer. I had the pork tenderloin and my date had the new york strip. Both entrees came with fresh vegetables and potatoes. Everything was so delicious! I've lived in Norman for 12 years now and finally went to whispering pines thanks to a groupon for dinner. We didn't check out the upstairs and rooms but the restaurant area was a nice little location. Obviously run by a family with a small menu but what they make they make well. I had the pork loin with potatoes and asparagus. The pork loin had great flavor and presented very well. My wife had the salmon and it was very good also with a crusted finish. Again with their small size it came with the same sides but they did them well. Service was exceptional and with a $20 for $40 groupon it was reasonably priced. My ratings are about the environment and value we found here. Dollar for dollar, this place would be hard to beat. It is a beautiful respite only a few minutes from Norman. The service was fantastic, and in a very down to earth, personalized way. If you want a five star hotel, this is not it, but if you want a peaceful, relaxing, clean, and beautiful environment, this is it. Each morning we woke to the sound of the breeze in the trees and the birds, as well as to the smell of breakfast cooking. We stayed for three nights and I will remember this place. 1. WAY Overpriced for amenities. 2. Got the StarDust with the hot tub. Not enough capacity in hot water heater to fill tub. Got a little over half full, then water went cold. 3. No hot water for showers after aborted attempt at hot tub. Had to wait an hour for hot water. 4. No hair dryer after shower. Had to re-wet hair after they finally found one. 5. Breakfast was blah. Nothing to write home about. They bring it to your room so you're on their schedule, not yours. Limited menu of omelette or pancake. 6. Mattress was mostly soft and not very comfortable. 7. Shower head was low and I'm tall. Bumped it several times. 8. Check in lady at the desk was robotic and curt. "Sign here...do this....here's breakfast...."etc. Not welcoming or endearing. 9. Tripped on the step up to the bathroom area, unlit at night. 10. No privacy with the toilet or vent fan in the bathroom. 11. Toilet ran several times. Needed repair. Oh, there was something good. At least it was quiet. But this unit didn't have a neighbor, which could be a game changer. read more

We had our wedding here in March. I lived in Texas and my now husband is in the Air Force and was deployed so I planned my entire wedding through phone calls and emails with only one face to face before the wedding. They were very helpful. We used them for our catering as well and the food was delicious. Everyone at the wedding said how good everything was and how beautiful it all was. We ate here Saturday night. This is a family owned place. The family has a great story. The dad was a chef and still is involved. The uncle is the chef, the mom the bartender, and the son does everything else. Our food was so good and the service excellent, and perfect attentiveness. All the sauces were very tasty and matched the dish perfectly. We had the duck, salmon, pork tenderloin and Steak Diane. It was a really good meal, a very nice atmosphere, and a fabulous evening. My honey and I were looking for a quiet place in the country away for the city bustle but not very far from home. We did not expect the quality of the room, service, and restuarant! We stayed in the satin room and found this was a suite with full sectonal sofa and love seat, beautiful decor. There was a mini kitchen and dishes. The bed was king size and comfy. The double jacuzzi had plenty of hot water, candles, and we played in the buble bath they provided. The restuarant had a nice quiet ambiance, candles, roses, great service, and excellent food. Because we were celebrating both our birthdays they brought a complimentary chocolate dessert with 2 candles. We ended our meal with dessert liquer. I decided to stay at Whispering Pines instead of hotels closer in town because I thought it would be quiet. I specifically asked for a room that was quiet. Instead, I was put in the room facing the highway with high-speed traffic all night long. I only could get 3 hours of sleep. When I tried to turn on the TV during my restlessness, none of the channels were assigned to the cable remote and could only get one bad channel. Then, when I checked out a day early because I couldn't sleep there, the desk clerk was insulting: "whatever makes your life easier" and demanded that I pay the next night's fee because of their 7-day cancellation policy. This place is a total clip joint and I would highly recommend against staying there, if you want a good night's sleep. read more

We had heard good reviews; soon after saw a coupon from Amazon Local for $30 and finally got out there to try it out. It is a bit of drive, yet a beautiful Sunday morning with extra time so all good? The waiter was sweet, but a bit nervous, being new. We ordered their house specialties; the pancakes and the huevos rancheros. The pancakes were light and fluffy, the huevos was marginal. The tortilla was tough, the over easy eggs were not so over easy. When we presented the coupon, it was declined stating that it was sold prior to their opening for brunch and was only good for dinner on a week night.It did NOT state this anywhere on the coupon. After explaining to the manager that we work too late and live too far to drive out on a week night, she finally relented to settling for face value.I think this was bad form. It was not the money, it was the principle. That speaking, we will not return nor refer others to Whispering Pines. I did contact Amazon and they have credited me the additional $15. I will continue to shop with them on a very frequent basis. Too bad. read more
