Deaja was an amazing waitress!! She was so attentive and visited our table often. On top of that, the food was great. I got the buffalo chicken sandwich, it was cooked perfectly and tasted great. Of course I indulged and got the bananas foster crepe (Deaja's recommendation) and could not have been more satisfied with it. I'm usually nervous ordering crepes as I've had many in the past that are as thick as pancakes, but the crepe itself was very thin and the filling was nothing short of perfect. We went for lunch during the week and it wasn't too busy. The only downfall was the hostess didn't greet you very nicely. Since it was our first time, the first impression as you walk in wasn't great. The hostess didn't greet you - she didn't smile or talk..almost seemed grumpy. On the other hand, our waitress was amazing! The food was delicious, the portion sizes are big, and their tea selection is huge. The waitress explained different teas and foods on the menu. Loved it! From the flight of teas to the sandwich to the crepes, everything was amazing. Got there as soon as they opened at 10:00 this morning and ordered by 10:05. Noticed some of the tables had food crumbs on them From the night before. The server was very pleasant and told us (after I had to flag her down for more coffee and water) it was taking so long because they had a new crepe chef, but I noticed the 4-top behind us, who had been seated later, had their food and a crepe was part of it. The food arrived and the bisque (very tasty) was hot, but everything else was cold. The food was fine once I brought it home and reheated it. I met a friend here over the holidays for a nice catch-up lunch. We arrived about 20 minutes after opening just to make sure it wouldn't be too crowded because it was over the holidays but we were able to be seated right away and it was not as crowded as we anticipated. I am a tea lover so I was very excited to come here while in town and also very excited to see so many options for food and drinks on the menu! We were greeted by the waitress and ordered our drinks first, I ended up getting some sort of steamed milk tea latte type thing. You get a whole pot when you order so it stays hot and you can keep pouring and pouring yourself more cups! For food, I had such a hard time deciding because there were so many things that sounded amazing. I finally decided on the veggie & goat cheese scone-which while promising myself I would be back to try more ASAP! I also got a side of the soup of the day. The food was sooo good, in addition to a tea-lover I am also a scone-lover so I was pretty happy during this meal, put that food together with my oldest friend and it was a great experience. This is my first time visiting this establishment since, I had the Ballstonian and the roasted red pepper soup both were delicious but the star was the bread. It's a Saturday afternoon and they are pretty busy however my waiter never came to refill my drink and I had to wait awhile to even leave the establishment because he was the only person who was able to get me my check. Also they don't have a liquor license and have alcoholic drinks on the menu. Overall a good experience but the service was terrible. read more

Terragon Mushroom Chicken Crepe $12.65 Caramelized mushrooms, leeks, roasted chicken, tarragon, Brie, sherry. Looked and tasted like frozen chicken cubes (not roasted), with canned mushrooms (not caramelized), way too much SALT (not tarragon), canned mushroom soup (not Brie, sherry OR Campbell's). Ruined our Mother's Day brunch. With such a sophisticated website, we expected a higher quality of food and service than we received. Each crepe arrived in a box - not even a lining of parchment paper...Just tossed into a cardboard box with the bag of kettle chips thrown right on top of the crepe. And if that wasn't bad enough, not only was the contents not as described, it tasted awful, and was literally COLD. They should stick with tea. read more

After being turned away at the door by a very rude, self-righteous boy at the Ballston Spa location who quite literally sighed and gave me a full body scan before telling me it would be awhile, I took my party to the Schenectady location. We were greeted by a very lovely young lady. Our server was nice and asked us if we had any questions about the menu and our tea selections were perfect. In my party, we had the goat cheese salad, the lobster bisque, the vegetable sconewhich, a Ballstonian and 3 dessert scones. Everything was delicious! My only complaint would be that the clotted cream was not thick which was disappointing and it was placed on a plate along side jam. It maybe picky, but these accompaniments would be more appealing in small ramekins and may help to prevent the melting of the clotted cream. I have been a long time customer of the Ballston Spa location and all I can say is, "do better." Schenectady for the win!! read more

My large family, ages 13-85, had lunch here a couple of weeks ago to celebrate my daughter's birthday and everyone left happy and full! The manager, John, was helpful, thoughtful, creative, and patient with us as we tried to find a table that worked for everyone. Our server, Brie, was absolutely fantastic! She was so fun, responsive, knowledgeable, full of excellent suggestions, and made my daughter's birthday so special! And the food was excellent! Well I wish I had glowing reports to share but I was completely disappointed. The panini I had the Buffalo chicken tasted ok but the bread overwhelmed the sandwich. There was a small cooked chicken breast with a couple pieces of bacon(not crispy) and a few spinach leaves and some type cheese. Just overall very disappointing. I visited the new establishment, lots of new employees, seated me in area in direct sun. When requested to be seated elsewhere they refused until I stated I would just leave. Mistake 1. It was in the morning and was given a lunch menu. I asked if there was a breakfast menu that stated no. Our waitress did bring us a limited breakfast menu on a clipboard. Mistake 2. Looking at menu many items had nuts which I am allergic. No substitutions. Mistake 3. Only choices were kale and argula mix. No romaine or even iceberg. Mistake 3. I have such high hopes for this place -- because I truly want it to succeed and to have Jay Street realize its potential. While the food is good, the service is beyond horrible. We went there on a Saturday evening - and was not busy at all -- yet: 1) tea came out well after we got our meals (so we had no other drinks to drink while we were eating); 2) the waiter never once came back to check on us; 3) after waiting for about 20 minutes after we were done eating, I had to hunt down someone else to ask for our check...and only then it took our waiter another 15 minutes to bring us our check...and he seemed annoyed at US. We visited Schenectady after a couple of years, and after checking out of out of the Hampton Downtown, we decided to try this spot out for a late breakfast. First I should say that the service was great! I ordered the Scallion & Bacon quiche, and my girlfriend ordered the Cobb Salad. Cobb salad was not bad, a fair share of your typical Cobb ingredients (Bacon, Egg, Bleu, etc...). While the salad was fresh, the dish that it was served in did not lend well to consuming the salad in anything short of a conventional way. Go at it with a fork from any angle and 30% of your salad ends up on the table. I guess what i'm saying is that the bowl needed to be bigger. Alright, what I came here for was to whine about the Scallion & Bacon quiche.. Overcooked, zero flavor, and dense. It took one bite of this quiche for me to put down my fork down and help my girlfriend finish her Cobb salad. The texture of the egg was similar to that of a dried out sponge and it lead me to assume that it had been baked a long time ago and then frozen for too long. I can admit that living in NYC has spoiled me a bit, however it blew my mind that a quiche could be so underwhelming, mostly because they are rather simple to make. The egg inside of a quiche should melt in your mouth, slightly similar to soufflé. Disappointing last breakfast in Schenectady and I hope/ can only imagine that their other breakfast items are much better. read more

Let me first say that I'm a huge fan of the other two Whistling Kettles (Ballston Spa and Troy) and was totally prepared to LOVE this new one in Schenectady. WRONG! First of all, 2 of our party of 3 arrived on a Friday morning at 11:30. Few other customers where even there yet, but we waited almost 10 minutes to be seated. They were ignoring us! They eventually took us in the back room and seated us at a table for 4 in the middle of the room. I asked if we could be seated in the main room in a booth. We were told that they were expecting a lunchtime rush and couldn't give us a booth that sat 4. So....because we arrived early we couldn't have a better seat? When the third person of our party arrived moments later, she asked if we could sit in a booth and again we were told NO.....that's for the rush. (WHAT?) We shut up, adjusted our attitudes and ordered. Two of us ordered the monte cristo crepes and the other ordered the quiche of the day. After almost 40 minutes we finally got our food (must have been that "rush" again) and it was just awful. Now I've had and enjoyed this same crepe in Ballston Spa many times. This time it was inedible. It consisted of tiny pieces of ham, no turkey, and bits of greens inside a mushy crepe. The whole thing was cold and had liquid on top.....NASTY. My friend's quiche tasted OK but the top was burnt so she ate around that. The waitress was in a bad mood and had already sniped at us a couple of times so we opted NOT to complain but just get out of there instead. (I mean she was SCARY!) I also want to say that in this "rush", there were 3 booths in the other room with parties of 3 seated in them as well as several empty places. The "rush" never happened. Guess we're just chopped liver. We certainly weren't treated like guests, more like nuisances. NEVER AGAIN, Schenectady WK. read more

Tell me if I'm in the wrong here. Whistling Kettle is a restaurant that I normally have a very good experience at. They have great food and great service. That was at the Troy property. Just moving to Schenectady, I figured I would try out the local spot and so my girlfriend and I came to try it out before work. Our meals were very good and we had a nice experience with our waitress. I ordered a meal to go so I would have a "lunch" for work before we left. As I got into my car to drive away, I realized that I had left my to-go order and went back for it. This was maybe 5 minutes tops that it took me to turn the car around and go back. I live less than 5 minutes away in town. When I arrived back at the restaurant, I was told that it has been thrown away. The waitress had told another lady who worked there to clear the table and throw everything away, which she did, not knowing that the box was a full to-go meal. They apologized, I was as polite as I could be, and they said they'd go request another meal. A few minutes later the waitress comes out with a soup to inform me that it is very busy and the manager told her that the policy is they do not hold peoples food for them so I would not be getting another sandwich. She asked if I'd like to speak with the manager, to which I said absolutely. (which is not something I normally do, I work service and try not to be a pain but this didn't seem right??) The manager comes out and proceeds to tell me the same thing, they are busy, their policy is they do not hold food, too bad. I said that I had NEVER worked somewhere that you would immediately throw someones things away after they left. You push it aside for a few and see if they come back for it. I said I had been gone for literal minutes. And then to on top of that refuse to make them another one? Her response was, "So you forgot it.." This left me feeling absolutely embarrassed. To have gone in there and be treated so callously, be told that it is my fault because I forgot it and then be refused another sandwich. Only after I was red in the face and looking ridiculous did she go get me another "sandwich".Thrown in the box as if I needed another reminder that you didn't value me as a customer. Then on top of all of this... I'm just about to leave and ask the lady at the front if that was the manager I just spoke with (this lady was very sweet and was the only one who actually said "sorry" or offered any type of sympathy so I felt comfortable asking her), and she says "No that was the owner of all of the Whistling Kettles". I really wanted to enjoy the new Whistling Kettle location after being a fan of the Ballston Spa one for over 10 years. I went for lunch with my mom this Monday around 1 p.m. It was not super busy and we were seated right away.When our waiter asked for our drink orders, we asked for 2 waters to start and more time to look over the huge list of teas. It took 15 minutes and 2 more times asking my server that we finally got water. We ordered our teas (I got a hot latte) as well as our food. Our food came out before our drinks, and when my drink finally arrived, it was lukewarm. I ordered a panini that was hardly pressed. The cheese was still hard/not melted and the chicken and bread were cold. Our server was no where to be seen for 20+ minutes. By that point I just ate the panini sans bread. Had to ask a busboy for water re-fills due to our server being MIA. Ultimately just really disappointed in our experience. I really hope things improve. We have great memories of the Ballston Spa location but it's a hike. It'd be nice to see this location in Schenectady succeed. read more
