I wanted to take up tai chi so we found that white dragon does a couple free lessons to try it out and we loved their teaching and flexible schedules. Francisco is patient and insightful with us as beginners. All of the other instructors are enthusiastic and extremely helpful; not to mention friendly. We enjoy one private lesson per week and try to make it to every available group class. Our technique has improved and we feel confident about advancing thanks to the dedicated staff. I joined this place as a spur of the moment decision when I had a year left in San Diego (last year in college). It was in between this place and another location that taught jujitsu. I decided to join this place because it had accommodating schedules, was close to where I lived and when I went in to talk to the instructors they were very helpful and kind. I never even bothered going to the other gym, actually. Anyway, I had one year here and made it my personal goal to get up to green sash before I left. My instructor worked very hard with me to help me accomplish my goal (which I did!). Within that year I was able to learn many helpful lessons, build my self confidence and improve my health. I've since moved to NY and let me tell you, White Dragon is VERY reasonable when you realize what they charge over here. It made me realize what a good thing I had in San Diego. Reasonable prices with one on one instruction and unlimited group classes. Try searching for a one on one martial arts class in NY...please I beg you because I haven't found one that wouldn't cost me an arm and and leg. In regards to what you actually learn. I know I only got up to Green Sash but I think it was at least enough to give me some assurance while I was backpacking around some impoverished countries, less than upscale street corners of the city, or sitting in nearly empty subways at night. I'm being serious. When I'm near someone suspicious or walking on a dark street, I find myself planning what type of moves I might have to use if someone attacked me. I may not have the strength to win but I'll make damn sure the attacker regrets ever targeting me. (However, the best action in danger is to simply high tail it out if you can. No need to be a hero. This school is great! The classes are awesome- i have learned something new each time I've gone and feel like I've gotten stronger since I've started. Same ol', same ol' for this company. No upfront pricing or honesty. A lot of these reviews seem to be stock copy and paste nonsense from employees or robots. I went back to see if I could just roll on the mats some time and not pay for unlimited classes or wing chun or whatever...just some sort of mat fee or an infrequent student fee... They were not having it. And I know the days are getting longer and it is getting warmer outside, but the kids have been doing weapons practice behind the studio on the Boulevard Drive side for the past few months. It is cold and poorly lit. I know they need safe, but please be safe about it and those fancy uniforms cannot be cheap enough to wear them out on parking lot asphalt. read more

Ive been meaning to write this, but haven't found the time. In the last couple of months the school feels different (in the best of the ways!!!) I've noticed a new dynamic in their kids classes, and not only my child, but myself truly enjoy! (I've caught myself one-too-many-times)listening to Ms. Dao's class. She's exceptional! It takes great heart and passion to shape little minds, and she sure has those qualities! We love the fact that we can come as many times as we like! Specially because my son loves everyone over there. My child isn't the most athletically inclined or the fastest, but at WD he's never felt inadequate. Although he isn't the greatest athlete child in the world, he is very, VERY passionated about martial arts and he gets encouraged everyday by his amazing instructors. He feels a really high sense of respect for Ms. Del C, and Tai Sifu, and he always talks about how much he would like to be like Mr. Troung and Mr. Williams. I agree with all of the five-star commenters posting on this site so I'm not going to repeat those praises. But with "honesty" being called into question by a couple of commenters, I'd like to address pricing for those who now might wonder about the school's integrity. You're not going to get quoted a price before hearing about the variety of membership options available. (And yes, as a parent I want MEMBERS, not yahoos who walk in off the street to "roll on the mats") The option combinations can make the pricing matrix complicated. This actually translated to me as flexible. You can choose one or more contract years with a longer contract being cheaper per month. You can choose amount of personal instruction time (monthly, biweekly, weekly). As I recall, participation in unlimited group classes is included with all plans. And paying a yearly lump sum gives you the lowest possible price, but monthly payments are also an option. In my experience, Sifu Don Tittle (by appointment, because he's also a busy and active instructor) explained all of the options, prices for each option, gave me all the time I needed to ask questions, and didn't act put out when I told him I needed to think about it. Three years ago I signed a contract for my teenage daughter, locked in at approx. $175 per month. Since she's working out for two to three hours each day, for four (or more) days per week, that comes out to less than $4.50 an hour -- a great value for a great workout with some amazing people of all ages! Finally, while the initial expense for the uniform and safety gear seemed high, the school stocks items of great quality and nothing has needed replacement. read more

My son looks forward to his kung fu lessons and especially his private lessons because that's where he receives individual attention. I've been attending White Dragon for about 10 months now. My future cousin-in-law finally got me to stop by and check it out after months of pestering me. Words can't express how much I enjoy training here. I don't know how prices compare to other martial arts around the neighborhood as I didn't really check any others out but I can see how it might be a little pricey for some. You get what you pay for here as they offer classes 6 days a week, plus a weekly private lesson. They even offer lunch time classes on Tues/Thurs. Below are some of the reasons I like White Dragon: Physical Challenge - Training is intense here - from the kickboxing classes to classes for honing techniques, they've all made me a better martial artist and put me in the best shape of my life. Mental Challenge - They surely don't allow us to practice as mindless brutes. I've learned quite a bit about the history of Choy Li Fut. I love how some of the instructors will teach us something educational at the beginning of a class, and quiz us afterward when we're worn out from training. And we usually count in Cantonese. Discipline - I'm a grown man and understand this all too well but I see how they teach discipline to the younger students. I can't wait to introduce my son when he gets older (he's currently 1 and a half) Family vibe - Everyone is friendly to the point it's like one big family at White Dragon. From the saluting bows to the congratulating hand shakes, there's definitely a lot of camaraderie going around. Tai Sifu is always trying to check in with me to see how I'm doing. Fun and Therapeutic - Maybe more so for guys vs girls, but it's fun hitting the bags and other people in sparring. I became a student at White Dragon Martial Arts School in La Mesa, CA about nine months ago and I am hooked! I will say I am 54 years old so in the group classes I am usually surrounded by students much younger than me, but I want to assure you age does not matter. We are all treated with the same respect and kindness. I will say, we are all expected to do the best we can and to push ourselves, but this is the way, the discipline of being a martial artist. White Dragon offers unlimited group classes which I can take after a long day at work. The group classes supports the individual training I get weekly with instructor. There are also plant of classes that focus more on physical fitness to strengthen and develop endurance and these are intense. But, you are encourage to modify the workout to what you can do. I sweat in 10 minutes in these workouts what it used to in a 50-minute cycling class!! What I really find most healthy is that I use my whole body now (every inch of it) in ways I never have. I love that my brain is being stimulated and forced to rewire which helps prevent neurological problems that come with age. When I joined White Dragon almost two years ago, I immediately quit my gym membership. Not only does White Dragon provide everything I need in terms of improving my strength, stamina, discipline, and coordination, unlike other martial arts I've done it provides me with a whole system of self-defense. From hand and weapons forms steeped in Chinese tradition to self-defense techniques to personalized instruction in sparring, weapons sparring, grappling, joint locks and other combat training, White Dragon really covers the gamut of self-defense. Respect, safety, and health are of utmost importance to the school and its instructors, and they will push you to your limits in a way that fosters personal growth. I've never witnessed an unfriendly or disrespectful instructor, and it's clear that this attitude is passed down to the students. Last weekend I had the privilege of attending a seminar taught by Tai Sifu Tittle, the Chief Instructor at the La Mesa location. (I know for a fact that 100% of the fees collected from this seminar went straight to charity.) In just those two hours, I found Tai Sifu to be one of the most focused and determined martial artists I have ever met. He was also extremely funny, completely approachable, and an excellent teacher. I could tell that he was passing on these values to the instructors whom he trains. If I didn't have such a long, positive history with the San Marcos and Clairemont schools, I would probably find myself down at La Mesa, especially after this seminar. A little background, so you know where I'm coming from... I've been a Kung Fu and Tai Chi student at White Dragon for over six years. I am not an instructor. I've found all of the White Dragon schools I've ever visited to be safe and clean. The curriculum is extremely well-structured, so every student knows what they have to do to get to the next level. Rank is never given away, it's earned with hard work. The tuition I have been paying is more than fair. (It's actually about half what I was paying at a different martial arts school.) It costs more than a gym membership, but less than weekly personal training - and students get weekly personal training. Weekly one-on-one with an trained instructor is key. White Dragon Martial Arts School in La Mesa is a fantastic organization. When I first started out nearly two years ago, I was grossly overweight. I wasn't morbid or anything, but, at least 50 pounds too heavy for my height. I had a triglyceride (fat in blood) level of 430. I'm a young man, it should have been around 180 or so. In short, I was way out of control in terms of my health. I had a traditional gym membership. You know the one. 30 bucks a month to 24 Hour. Wait in line for the bench press for the privilege of using it after some sweaty fat head muscle freak greases it all up. Run on a machine for 20 minutes. Then, after two hours of "working out", you go change in the locker room with all the "I don't care if I'm hanging out here butt naked" 65 year olds. Gross. The problem was, it wasn't two hours of continuous workout. More than half that was just waiting in line to use something. The rest of the time was you injuring your body by lifting free weights and beating it to submission on machines. I needed a change. I needed something that would motivate me to go to the gym. Not depress me like I was going to a crappy job. White Dragon provided that to me. It is a 'non-traditional' way to achieve health. Through this school, via either my instructors or through other students, I've learned how to manage my health and my mind. Yes, you pay for the service. But, what are you looking for? I was looking for motivation and comradeship. The school provides that in the most excellent and professional of manners. The people there are great. Yes, the guy who does the sales pitch is awesome and you wish he would be your teacher, but, its a business, and there are hundreds of students. Chances are you will be assigned a different instructor. The money you pay is well worth it. This school is a lifestyle change. I'm enrolled in the MMA course as a student. I've met great people through the school and have been heavily influenced to eat better, work out correctly, and have a positive attitude to a lifestyle change that was necessary if I wanted to live past 50. The instructor's are very professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is very friendly and conducive to a family experience. There are no scary tough guys or jerks here. Since I joined two years ago, I've lost 50 pounds, gained I don't know how many pounds of usable strength muscle, and my cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglyceride levels are all normal. My 5-year-old has an abundance of energy. Her preschool teacher told me she lacked focus... Since enrolling her in White Dragon, her inattention has taken a huge dip. Her private teacher, Mr. K, is amazingly patient, the other teachers are warmly supportive, and Tai Sifu Tittle is accessible, which is nice for a big school like White Dragon. Even better, my daughter's confidence level recently shot up to the sky after a tournament in which she received a gold medal for her techniques. Now she's more invested and has that "focus" she once lacked. This whole experience has only bolstered my belief that martial arts should be included in regular school curricula. Positive: Staff is friendly and approachable. Great facility with a lot of space. Very traditional with beautiful movements. It really is an art form. Negative: They are very shady. When you ask about prices, they wont tell you. They wait until you have had your 3 private lessons so they can really get you in to it and then they set up a private meeting where they smack you in the face with the price. By then you are all pumped up to join but you know you cant afford it. They tell you that you can make payments. You have to pay a portion of the years fees up front, so plan to pay at least 350 dollars along with your first months payment. The lowest plan after the down payment is 99 dollars a month. This gives you one private lesson a month. This would be okay accept they dont teach you anything outside of personal training sessions. Ya, you will practice basics and do a lot of pushups in group class but you will only be able to learn the techniques that will earn you higher belts once a month. So plan on progressing to the next level way behind everyone else. The next plan is 129 a month which is biweekly lessons which is probably the most affordable for the time you get. The weekly lessons are 159 a month. They make you sign a contract with all of these plans so your stuck for a yr at a time. After your contract expires, you have to sign a new one and you have to pay the down payment again! They dont care that you have been a member. They will also offer you events and side classes on regular basis that cost 200-400 dollars and make you feel guilty for not going. Constant upselling! As if you dont pay enough already! The stuff they do teach most of the time is so generalized also. They dont tell you, "oh by the way, if you tried to use this technique on someone stronger than you, youre gonna get your ass kicked! " A lot of these techniques and forms are not practical. But, they dont tell u that. Students who cant even defend themselves are wearing advanced sashes because the sifu there just passes anyone who can memorize a few techniques. I have seen these people spar and theyre terrible! In a street fight they would get killed! But, they can hold that sash up high! I saw this one guy mess up on almost everything he tested on and put such little effort and he still passed! I was so pissed off because I put my all into everything I did there. It was then I knew that I did not want to be a part of this group. I wanted to be challenged, not just passed for trying. Oh and only a handful of them are true black belts that worked from white belt all the way up. A lot of them were put on the "fast track" to become instructors and then they say they are higher than blackbelts. I dont think its the same at all. My advice is to find a place with no contract and up front pricing. This place is ran to much like a business. Takes away from the love of the art. They just care about the money, not you. read more

This school is AMAZING!!! I first walked in these doors back in 2013. I've been a part of the family ever since. I purposely say family because since day one that's how they made me feel. My first two years here as a student I learned sooooo much. I got so much bang for my buck. The one on one private lessons, unlimited group classes every day of the week, the ability to train at any of the nine locations, all for one monthly fee? You can't get that at any other school. Other schools nickel and dime you for everything and yet they still don't come close to what White Dragon offers. The previous reviews are way off track....this is a great martial arts school. My son has been attending La Mesa for 10 years (he is 14yrs old now in 2011). Sifu & his well trained instructors teach discipline to be applied throughout your daily life ...not just kung fu. My son is in incredible shape, amazing at traditional Chinese Kung Fu, honor roll student and a true asset to society. I can't say that every instructor has been a perfect fit for my son.....in a case where I feel he needs a different instructor...I just request one...no a big deal at all. As far as price....I have paid annually or have invested in the Black Belt program....regardless I usually work something out within my budget...never been a problem. With everything that my son has learned from White Dragon, honestly I would have paid more....this is a bargain. I highly recommend La Mesa White Dragon for all ages....my father also attended Tai Chi (before his passing) and truly enjoyed his instructor and everything that was learned....and in case you were wondering....when my father passed....3 of the instructors attended his funeral and all instructors paid their respects....this is a family establishment. read more

I'm a pretty big fan of White Dragon. I joined for my health - I've done the gym thing before, but it turned into drudgery after a couple of years, and I needed a changeup. It's been two years since I've signed up, and no sense of drudgery yet! The instructors don't hesitate to push you, and there's a good number of classes that you can participate in. You get a lot of exposure to both traditional martial arts and live training and you can do either/or as far as you feel comfortable taking it. I personally do anywhere from 3-5 hours of classes a week, with a mix of sparring, grappling and traditional kung fu. I'd love to join their full on MMA classes, but alas my schedule does not permit. I went through the sales pitch that a lot of other folks are commenting here about, and while I'm glad I persevered through it, I have to agree it can make for a poor first impression. I was ready to sign up when I walked through the door, and by the time the spiel was made I was ready to walk right back out. It was pushy and unnecessary and car salesmany. They have a business model that works for them though, and they wouldn't be where they are now without new students, so I kinda chalk it up to a necessary evil. Thankfully, that's the worst I can say about these guys. Once you get into the actual training, it's high quality, diverse, and challenging. Each sash requires a new level of fitness, and I find myself at this great balance of "I'm never going to be able to do this" and "Oh crap, I actually just did that!" I watch my body do things I never really thought it could do. It's pretty awesome. As others have mentioned, the instructors are knowledgeable and incredibly supportive. This kind of trickles down to the students and there's a real sense of camaraderie there. When I passed my first sash test, there were folks shaking my hand that I had never met before, which was humbling and made me really appreciate the kind of organization I had joined. So while there was a rocky start to our relationship, I highly encourage people to check it out, look past the business side of things, and ask actual students what they think about White Dragon. I'm only one guy, but the experience has been worth every penny to me. As a final thought, I feel it necessary to let you know that my legs are now huge. I've gained two inches just from what they make me do in class. I haven't touched a weight since I've been here! read more

I have been a student of both the Choy Li Fut and Tai Chi Chuan curriculum for a bit over 6 years. Without a doubt, starting martial arts at White Dragon has been the best thing I have ever done for myself in my life. I like that the school is open long hours 6 days a week. You can go work out anytime the school is open and pull aside an instructor to answer questions as they come up while practicing. Believe me, I ask a LOT of questions and the instructors never tire of helping me. I look forward to my private lessons each week. ( I have 1 for CLF and one for TC.) This one on one guidance is invaluable. In addition to that, I have access to lots of various group classes, CLF group class, Bag workout classes, Tai Chi group classes, weapons class, grappling classes, sparring classes. Etc. So, I feel I get the best of all worlds; A private instructor who works with me and guides me, and a lot of instructors to get different perspectives from. I have watched Sifu Tittle over the years, and I have witnessed things that make me believe he is a man of great integrity. He is truly concerned with helping people achieve their goals. And he honestly cares about and is passionate about martial arts; it isn't just a business for him. Furthermore, he trains and hires instructors that follow his example. It is a very diverse group of students. I started at the age of 39. You see students from as young as 4 to as old as 70. The school is very good at accommodating these different age groups. They keep the kids classes fun with games like "Sifu says" (a play off of Simon says) It still amazes me is the positive transformation I see these kids make studying martial arts. There are almost as many female students as male, so for those women who feel uncomfortable in all male environments, you need not be concerned. It is hard for a martial arts school to walk the line between being successful long term, yet not compromising quality- becoming a "McDojo" White Dragon succeeds in doing this. Tai Chi is taught the way it is supposed to be taught, as a martial art with fighting applications. Even if you are only interested in learning for health reasons, you need to know the martial applications to do Tai chi correctly and gain those health benefits. It isn't the cheapest school around, but a bit of looking around told me it is comparable to many other schools out there. And it isn't the most expensive either. If you want to be a serious student of martial arts, and take advantage all the things you get with your membership that I mentioned above,I feel it is a great value for the price. read more

I have two children who have been enrolled at White Dragon Martial Arts school for three years. It is clearly evident that the school puts effort into training the instructors - as each of them has a infectiously positive attitude that is pervasive throughout each White Dragon school in San Diego county. We have participated in the annual competitions where all the White Dragon schools come together. We have also gone to the annual dim sum banquet, and the culture that glues this organization together is top notch. We are very happy to be participants in this 1500+ member community. Our children are learning important self defense skills, and we can see their physical strength and coordination improving each month. More importantly, we have noticed increased self-confidence and determination that will stay with them for years. Thank you White Dragon, and please keep up the good work. read more

Great places for kids. My son has been going to white dragon going on for 4 years now.

My granddaughter started September 2017; her first class she absolutely fell in love with this school. She is now a brown sash and still insists she wants to be an instructor, just like Mr. Cruiriz, Mr. Trong and Mr. Williams! She has more self confidence than I can handle :) She has the best of the best, I'm as so pleased with the care and compassion these instructors have with the kids, they care about each and everyone of their students! read more
