    Baltimore County Dodgeball - 3... 2... 1... Dodgeball!

After…read morethe cops leave my house, I find my way over to Eastern Regional Park and play some Baltimore County Dodgeball. Yep. Every Saturday I hoof it from D.C. to Baltimore explicitly to throw balls at faces. Hard. Why? I mean, besides the obvious of the epicness that is dodgeball, it's once a week (Saturdays at 11am... enough time for me to show up still a little bit drunk, but awake enough to participate). It's also only $10 for the season, you heard me, ten whopping dollars (first day is free to try out). Seriously, I just shit a bacon cheeseburger that cost me more than that (to be fair, the poop was pretty fantastic). Fourthly, it is FUN. Super mega bonus karma points? It's county run, which means it's NOT run by United Social Sports... nothing against them, there is a time and a place for USS, however, it's nice to get a break from the 40+ dudes that want to power punch a rubber dodgeball at you so hard your ovaries leap into your throat. Plus, there aren't set teams. New ones are chosen each week depending on the rate of participation, and it enables you to play with a variety of different types of players, adjust your own game, etc. The folks there are friendly enough to help you out with different tactics/techniques if you ask. Some additional deets: - Six 8" Voit Foam balls are used during play (word on the street says Gator Skins will be on their way, so there's that). I bring my pink Gator Skin (aka Pink Thunder) with me, too. - Indoor Basketball Court with white lines for the borders (don't know the exact measurements off the top of my head, but they are NADA Regulation sized I believe). Yep, during the blistering summer, it's one of the few indoor sports where the players skin doesn't turn into delicious delicious bacon. - Parking is plentiful. Coming from DC, I welcome the availability of places I can drag my metal machine without having to worry about whether or not i just took up two spaces (I'm a terrible driver, so I probably did... okay, lets just assume I did). - Co-ed, and all ages (signing a waiver is likely a requirement) So basically, if you don't come out and play every Saturday at 11AM at Easter Regional Park, I'll eat your babies. A lot. P.S. I don't think BCDB has a direct website, however, they are on Facebook. P.P.S. After sitting and watching Maury level drama unfold in my other (non BCDB) super stuffy Dodgeball league, I must say, I can't wait for Saturday to come.

The times have changed, currently it's running on Sundays from 1000-1200 and it's $25 for the season or free to come and try it out. Right now the Season runs for 10 weeks, but every person who signs up tacks on another week of play. If you have the time, I urge you to give it a try. After a rough week at the office it's nice to throw some balls at my best friends.

Recently opened in February, TFCC is a new and welcome addition to the Rockville Parks & Rec…read moredepartment. Located in the Fallsgrove area, the community center is both convenient to my office and a very affordable gym option. The facilities (all brand new) include a big basketball court, a ping-pong room, a fitness room with weight and cardio machines, a playground outside for the kiddies, a community garden that's starting to grow, and a few rooms for classes/events. And, the building was built with many sustainable features (i.e. geothermal heating, locally sourced materials, efficient water faucets) I've been a fitness member for a while which means I can access the fitness room whenever the center is open. On top of that I take a weekly kickboxing class that is a lot of fun (but also kicks my butt.) I really like that I can take as many or as few classes as I want and just pay for what I actually use through the Parks & Rec department. At typical membership gyms, you pay an inflated fee to pay for all these classes you don't even go to and all the personal trainers to annoy you to take a training session and all the sales people to haggle with you over an extra $5 off the 'joining fee'. Here you can pay a flat rate and get access for a month, 3 months, 6 months, or a year. And there is a discount if you're a resident of Rockville. The community center also has community events like basketball tournaments, festivals for kids, teen movie nights, and other family oriented things that are a nice addition to the area. I haven't tried these out as I don't play basketball, am not a kid nor am I a teen but they look like fun family functions. Overall I highly recommend TFCC and am very satisfied, especially since I don't have to commit to a membership gym!
