The gross markup and greed is making pet ownership for the average family harder, and for those who do have pets to be able to afford proper care for pets, then as it trickles down making it hard for breeders to afford routine testing. Its simple greed, not caring for animals. Then the industry craps all over the affordable animal hospitals with petty complaints, while big hospitals go unchecked for dirty rooms, uninformed consent, neglectful care. The wrong people are getting into veterinary medicine because something has been lost in the translation of love for animals and the grossly inflated costs of rountine proceedurs. At least here they offer specialty services, thumbs up to that but thumbs down to the inflated costs of care

Last year we took our rescue there during a serious emergency. Getting any information from them at all during his ($14,000) stay was an exercise in frustration during what was already an extremely stressful time. Getting a phone call for an update, or getting any information from reception, or even when we arrived to take our boy home at the time we were told to be there and then forced to wait three hours... The whole thing left a terrible taste in our mouths. Then last night, I took our little puppy there (there was no other option as Fraser Valley was full) as he was suffering from an ongoing vomiting episode. I thought maybe this time would be different. Reception failed to outline what I should expect upon arrival - I was asked to call when I was in the parking lot, which I did, and when I brought the puppy inside we were rushed back outside to do a Parvo test (which I already knew he didn't need). The rectal swab was absolutely bungled by the person administering it -- zero bedside manner for a small puppy being held down in a parking lot while someone jabs something in the general direction of his rectum. Eventually we were invited inside after shivering in the parking lot, waiting for the results to be done, and the puppy was whisked away for vitals while I filled out their horrible iPad intake form. He came back and we settled in to wait. And wait. And wait. We waited for three hours before I finally asked reception approximately how much longer until we might see someone. I was told another 2-3 hours, and at this point it was 4 am and both the puppy and I were absolutely exhausted. The room we were abandoned in was filthy: filled with animal hair, dirt, and as my puppy was sniffing around the room, I noticed a lone forgotten turd underneath the doctor's chair. When I informed the receptionist that we would not be waiting another two or three hours, she said since only vitals were taken, we were free to go. And then chased after us in the parking lot, saying that no, actually, since they ran the Parvo test that would be A HUNDRED AND THIRTY DOLLARS. For a test I didn't ask for, we didn't need, and was only performed (and poorly) at their discretion. Nobody ever came to check in on us. Nobody ever came to give us an update. When we checked in, we were not made aware of the wait time; I certainly would not have subjected this little guy to a six-hour wait in that environment when he was already sick. I'm truly very happy for all the people who have had wonderful and transformative experiences at this hospital. I have not been able to share in that good luck. While I of course understand the concept of triage, being given the courtesy and respect of updates and some semblance of actual care would make all the difference for someone like me, whose case is admittedly non-emergent but still extremely stressful and anxiety-inducing, especially after the experience we had last year with this same place with an extremely sick dog. When people are coming in worried and stressed, the very least a place that purports to care about us while charging a premium can do is to remember that we (the clients) are there with our beloved pets (their patients) because we want to do what's best for them. This is a hard time for all of us - for our sick pets and for us, aching for them. To be shown into a disgusting room and forgotten about, to be ignored, to have to fight for the barest whisper of information or dignity... that is an insult to us and to our furry family members.

My kitten seemed more relaxed then I thought he would be, which is great since it is his first time. I was made aware that the room has been infused with aromas to calm the kittens and dogs to give the animal a pleasant visit, since they like the animals to see a visit to the vet as a positive thing not a scary thing. They made sure to do so, when my kitten was fussy they gave him a break to roam around and get comfortable, they gave him treats and food to help. When he was poked with the needle he did not flinch, the doctor was super gentle. He let me know of his procedure before hand so I would be aware. I would defiantly recommend bringing your animals here, I know I will bring my dogs here now too.

I had trusted and relied on this vet for a long time, but recently a very -very- scary incident…read morehappened. One of my cats has an allergy issue, which normally goes away with anti-histamines. Her bottom lip got swollen (like expected at times) but this time the meds weren't helping, and it kept getting worse. So I brought her to this vet, who knew her history (and had prescribed the meds. He told me that due to her jaw being out of alignment, her fang tooth had punctured the swollen part and it became infected. He advised that we should file down the tooth to prevent it happening again. I was given some antibiotics to clear the infection, and made an appointment for the next week for surgery. The estimate was around $450. At home, I had checked the antibiotics to see if they needed to be refrigerated, but there was nothing clearly indicating it, and I hadn't been told to when given them. So I left them out. But it bothered me, so I touched base with a friend who was currently in their internship to be a vet. They advised that yes, the antibiotics should be refrigerated, and although not toxic to still give my cat, it would lose potency. I told her about the scheduled procedure and she became very concerned. Filing a tooth would put it at huge risk of further infection and likely extraction, as it exposes the delicate pulp of the tooth. They recommended bringing her for an examination to their vet, and if needed they would do a full extraction instead (which was half the cost). She mentioned that any kind of dental work like the previous vet had planned should be done only by a specialist. I went back to Lifetime to get a replacement of the antibiotics, and had requested it be no charge since they hadn't indicated it should be refrigerated. I wasn't upset, but didn't feel I should have to pay again for an error on their part, which happens. The office manager treated me like I was a liar, making all kinds of excuses and defenses, and said this was the only time they'd replace something for free. I then told her I was cancelling my appointment for another vet, saying I felt more comfortable having someone I knew assisting with the procedure. She made me feel like I was some kind of idiot and worthless, and that hadn't been the first time she had made me feel that way. When I took my cat to the other vet, he performed an examination and showed me how her jaw alignment was perfect. There was absolutely nothing wrong with her teeth. It was a fluke happenstance that the swelling was in a bad placement that allowed the tooth to puncture it. All I needed to do was be more aware of it if her lip swelled again, and if it does puncture/get infected it would be an easier treatment to just deal with the wound. That cost me $45, almost $20 less than my visits to Lifetime, and he still gave her a thorough checkup outside of the tooth issue. If I hadn't gotten that second opinion, I would have not only been out $450, but my baby girl would have been set up for possibly MORE suffering if the exposed pulp became infected (a high risk), and had to go through MORE expensive surgery to remove a perfectly healthy and well-aligned tooth. My advice is to seek second opinions from other vets, especially in the case of expensive procedures. And don't pay a premium for a vet visit just because they're "convenient" in Pet Smart.

One of our doggies recently has been having seizures, and he was seen by a few vets at the clinic. Dr Gravelings, Dr Armstrong and Dr Kates. They are all outstanding and caring. Especially Dr Kates, she shows a true passion in caring for animals and she was extremely patience and careful when she was examining my dog. She is very knowledgeable, understanding, and informative. She took the time to answer any of the concerns we had. And the way she communicates is non-judgemental and unbiased. We really feel that she has the heart for the animals and she really wants them to do well. We feel blessed to have found such a wonderful vet! And their vet technicians are also amazing. The one we encountered the most is Jennifer. She is very caring and gentle with our doggies. She is very helpful, and when we told her we were not comfortable bringing our doggie to Canada west for the neurology consultation because of the poor comments we saw online, she right away said she can help us forward the referral letter to a hospital of our choice. And the many small things that they have done, it really shows they care. I have seen some have mentioned here about their prices. All I can say is we have been to the metrotown animal hospital and some other animals clinics, and the South Burnaby vet is where we want my doggies to be. They treat everyone and animals with respect and care.

We took our dog to Dr. Maan to see if our dog might need stitches and to get antibiotics. Dr. Maan looked at our dog but did not touch our dog nor do anything other than say the wound looked deep and needed Petscans and possibly needed to be operated on to see if there was any internal organ damage. (Read $$$) I felt really uncomfortable with him but I got antibiotics (even though we cleaned the wound and put on saline wound wash and polysporin. I paid about $70 including $25 of an examination fee where the doctor did nothing other than give prescription. What made matters worse is that Dr. Maan contacted the SPCA and alleged animal cruelty. The SPCA officer, Kevin McGeen then alleged animal cruelty and made demands to see our dog or that he would come around with the police. Let me tell you that we love our dog. Our dog is walking around and is eating and drinking. And our dog is getting proper treatment with antibiotics and plenty of care and love. If we believe our dog was badly injured, we would find a vet elsewhere. I feel we were badly treated. I went here because of the 5 star rating.

We were presented a box full of various urns which my friend would receive the ashes in and left.
