My partner has a knack for finding really cool places to stay, and for a reasonable price, too. The White Swan is adorable, comfy, and cozy, and I would love to stay here again in the future. We stayed for one night this month, after the Spiritbox show at the nearby (two blocks, uphill) Masonic. Our room was spacious, with a queen bed far more comfortable than most hotels I've stayed at, closet with robes (that was a first for me), fireplace, tv, chairs, coffee table, and desk. I liked the bathroom and shower. Better water pressure than I get at home, go figure. I even tried the pump shampoo and body wash attached to the wall because the smelled so yummy, and found them to be good quality too. Usually I don't really mess with complimentary toiletries because I have sensitive skin and a whole routine for my curls, but I took a risk and it paid off. Ambiance was everything. It felt like a Bed & Breakfast in the Scottish Highlands. Furniture well-loved, clean but cozy as opposed to sterile, old-fashioned fixtures, funky pink and teal hexagonal carpet that looked like tile at first glance, wall clocks, floral wallpaper, embroidery...all the little bits and bobs made me feel right at home. Our experiences with the staff here were lovely, and there were no issues during our stay at all. We found the hotel quiet, and the walls and windows well-suited to block out the city noises. The only thing I would have liked to have would be a screen on the window by the bed so I could enjoy the nice cold San Francisco air without worrying about nasty bugs flying in. I really loved staying here, and as I said, I would absolutely come back if I could afford it. They offer complimentary breakfast, but I only had a coffee and maple donut brought to me by my love, so cannot comment on the items offered or the breakfast nook downstairs. Be sure to try the cool retro elevator with metal screen. You have to press the button for a few 1000s and wait patiently for it to arrive, but arrive it will. I was def not pretending I was on the Titanic. They have valet parking available, but as we left the car at a Bart station outside the city to save us the $ and hassle, can't comment on the price of that either. It is a pretty straight shot walking from here to the Powell Bart station, downhill. On the way here from the Bart I would recommend a bus or the cable car ($8 one way) uphill if you don't want to go all the way uphill. read more

Pros: location close to public transportation and nearby neighborhoods. Cons: The property lacked basic comforts that I look for while traveling. Upon arrival noticed the mattress comforter had hair on it!! All different kinds of colors and thickness indicating they hadn't been washed in weeks/months. The mattress sunk in when sleeping on it. Quite uncomfortable. Windows were very hard to open. After much effort realized no screens on windows. Shame as wanted to keep them open during the day to ventilate the room due to poor odors. Was very cold in the room due to poor insulation and cracks around the windows letting in wind draft. Heater did not work. Fireplace was just for show and provided not enough heat to be comfortable. Wall are so thin you can hear neighbors' morning alarms through the walls, as well as talking in the lobby and people having breakfast downstairs. Can hear loud footsteps upstairs from neighbors coming back late at night 11pm and beyond! Could not sleep until they did, which would be after midnight. Quite disruptive considering planned to wake up early and start my day. Conclusion: Do not recommend this place unless you like the lack of basic comforts and like noise and disruptions. After a long but enjoyable day in the city, I would dread going back to my room due to the noise and disruptions. We talked to the front desk on a few occasions about these issues with no avail. Not acceptable especially given how much I paid. Overall displeased. Will not be coming back and looking for a better alternative nearby. read more

We recently stayed at the White Swan Inn for our daughter's wedding in San Francisco. Abbey Suite: This 2-room suite was perfect for gathering family prior to and after the wedding. Our daughter got ready for the wedding in the parlor, which had enough room for the makeup artist/hairstylist and family members. The suite has 2 bathrooms, one of which is huge (!) and equipped for the mobility-impaired. Not only was that great for hosting family but also helpful for my husband, who is mobility-impaired and needs more room to move. White Swan Parlor & Library: Rented these to host a post-wedding mini-reception with drinks and small bites. Lovely venue with lots of seating that allowed guests to congregate and converse. Also, a restroom was available in this area. The White Swan staff was excellent: accepted and refrigerated all deliveries as requested; provided serving platters and utensils, provided all plates, napkins, glasses; provided cheese, crackers, and fresh fruit; frequently checked on and refreshed platters. Thank you to our server Lito. General inn comments: Nice to have coffee, tea, and water always available. We definitely took advantage. Tasty pastries for breakfast every morning, different each morning. The fresh fruit and yogurt were a welcome addition. Appreciated the kitchen staff in the morning. They were constantly replenishing food and drink! Cute 1970s London vibe throughout the inn. Loved the old-fashioned elevator, which was helpful for my husband's mobility issues. Staff: Louis Kimball (General Manager), Cristy Flores (Director of Operations), the check-in, kitchen, and cleaning staff at both locations were excellent. Everything went so smoothly, we could enjoy the wedding day without any stress. They even refrigerated the flowers for the evening sit-down reception held at a different location. For this price, I would never have expected the luxury of the room, linens, fireplace, etc., I would go back in a heartbeat, even if it weren't the least expensive lovely option I've ever found in San Francisco. I have no complaints at all. And following is just for information: This is an old building and accessibility isn't perfect because that's how old buildings work when they haven't been turned into huge expensive hotels. It's a genuine early Otis elevator, a little hard to manage with my crutches, and I would not go there in a wheelchair. Again, no complaints. The British-ness is a cute image, and goes only so far as the name, the flag outside, and the no shelf in the bathroom ;-). Teabags and half-and-half pods only (except at breakfast). Again, I have NO complaints. Street parking can be impossible, which is just a fact of the city and the neighborhood, and the valet overnight cost almost as much as the room. read more

LOVE IT HERE I never stay anywhere without doing extensive research. I hate hotels and most of them are horrible places in my opinion. The absolute best part of this experience was the staff. Every single person was accommodating, comfortable, knowledgeable, and honestly just some of the nicest people I've ever met. The decor and attention to detail was absolutely lovely I am a big fan of a boutique hotel and this was wonderful. The room was very comfortable, bed was plush, everything was very clean, a REAL! fireplace was a very nice touch! Bathrooms had a comfortable tub and more than enough towels for two people. I really enjoyed the amenities they provide a complimentary wine and cheese hour in the evening and a breakfast in the morning. Both were simple but appreciated! The old elevator is a little scary but it works very well! They also had tea and coffee available all day. Parking is valet and a bit expensive but I noticed a lot of hotels in the area don't even offer that so I think it was worth paying for peace of mind (65$) They will bring you your car whenever you want it and take it back to the safe place when you are done. read more

Fantastic little hotel, with lots of personality, in a great location. We decided to book an overnight stay in order to attend a show nearby at The Masonic and it was the best decision. We really enjoyed the fireplace king suite with it's separate dressing/makeup table area... plus an actual coffee pot in the room (which most places removed after Covid) and complimentary soft drinks in the mini fridge. We stopped by the wine hour as well and met some very nice folks while we sipped a pleasant white wine (they also offered a red) and snacked on some mixed nuts and olives. There's a lovely sitting area downstairs, again with fireplaces ... and this is where they do their breakfast options in the morning as well. We're late sleepers so we didn't partake but I'm sure it's just as nice. Valet was easy and took good care of our car, though it was not inexpensive. $55 a night and $65 for oversized vehicles at the time of this writing. Check in and check out was also easy and everyone is very friendly. It's an old building so we occasionally heard our upstairs neighbors walking heavy but it wasn't very noticable. We booked three days and two nights, so we tried the delicious complimentary breakfast. This hotel is located on the steepest hills in San Francisco, so it could feel like a workout to return here at the end of the day. I loved the elevator, and took it whenever I got the chance to. The loudest parts were the two doors, but the trip up and down was smooth and silent. It does jolt you around when it starts moving and does it once more, when it reaches the destination. Again, I loved it! So cool to have experienced this working elevator with a faint smell of DW-40 and watching the chute and a glance of the other floors. My relatives, on the other hand, preferred the stairs right beside it and only took the elevator if I was with them. Our room was the fourth floor and down the hall. I have read a review, that some were woken up in the middle of the night when guests returned to their rooms, but I haven't experienced this. It could have been because our room was far from the staircase. The staircase did creak on every step, so if there were more guests who took the stairs more than the elevator, then it might have been noisy at night. We didn't even hear any footsteps above us either. The room was quaint and well-kept. We had the room with the bathroom, a mini kitchen like coffee space, another vanity with a walk-in closet. I felt history of the room in two ways: not enough outlets. I had to swap out some lamp fixtures and coffee machines to charge my watch and devices, and then trade these with my relative, once they were done. The other was the bathroom door. The knob was loose, so not knowing this I had a struggle when the door closed on me. It was a short scare, but after that we avoided the scare by not closing the door all the way. The bed was plush, very soft and morphs your body. I felt myself sinking into the mattress; that's how soft it was. The only drawback is that my body temperature is on the warm side, so at night this comfy bed was stifling with heat. The second night was better because the remedy was to remove a blanket layer. Still, I found myself waking up in the middle of the night with no blankets covered on me, and that was still warm. The complimentary breakfast was the best experience there. It was available all day from 7am to 10am. It was located on the lower floor -- since this hotel is on a slope, the hotel entrance is actually the 2nd floor, so the breakfast area is on the first...I think. The interior was so cute and so cozy! I always wanted to experience the Victorian feel, and the breakfast area was so good! (Took so many photos) The breakfast menu slightly changes by the day, but the general list was that there was always coffee, tea, bread for toast, jam, butter, and a boiled egg. Pastries were different each day. There are tables and chairs closest to the breakfast, near the outside deck, down the lower deck (this area were mostly couches and lounge sofas), and past this room was another wider room of more tables and chairs. Eating breakfast here was like a quaint time-skip. This was my favorite experience staying there. If one is looking for an extravagant stay, others can try for Fairmont or Palace Hotel, but this hotel let me step away from the current time and enjoy the slow life. read more

I am a fairly risk averse person and especially so when it comes to lodging. I generally prefer to pay a bit more to be on the safe side, but when it comes to San Francisco, paying a bit more can really break the bank. Was in town for a conference recently and the conference hotel rate was $250+tax, which was a bargain for SF but not really a bargain. I was happy to find (on Booking.com) the White Swan Inn for $220+tax which included a free breakfast (saving $30/day for the two of us). The room was very spacious and although there was no air conditioning, we were able to open 3 windows, and when it got cool use the gas fireplace. The best was very comfortable. We were on the top floor so either took the stairs or the old-timey elevator (where you have to slide the doors closed by hand). No one wants to spend all their time in SF in their hotel room. What you need is a launching pad. The location is good, in what I would call lower Nob Hill. You are up one steep slope from Sutter and down two VERY steep slopes from the top of Nob Hill. A short walk from the Top of the Mark, Liholiho Yacht Club, Union Square, and Chinatown. The breakfast in the mornings was good -- eggs, meat, fruit, pastries, oatmeal, bread, coffee, juice. I did not leave feeling wanting. There were cookies out every afternoon and (although we did not go) wine in the evenings. In the room you get complimentary water and soda. But the best part of the White Swan Inn is the people. You're greeted and made to feel valued and taken care of by every employee you encounter. I found White Swan Inn after googling for high-rated hotels near union square. I was booking a surprise birthday trip for my partner, and I wanted to make sure we were close enough to the Orpheum Theater and a few dinner spots we had reservations at. This hotel is so charming, and we loved everything about it. Great location and walking distance from Powell Station Bart, Union Square, The Orpheum, etc. The decor is so much fun and really does feel like an English getaway in the heart of San Francisco. There's a super cool old elevator, fun decor throughout the building, complimentary breakfast and wine/cheese in the evenings. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. This place is amazing! From the vintage elevator to the decor and lounge area and the amazing outside patio area for relaxing! The NIGHTLY cocktail and app hour is very nice. Serving white/red wine and several snack options. We enjoyed sitting on the patio or even in the Library looking lounge by the fire. My husband and I loved staying here. The Inn was comfortable and had the typical San Francisco architecture and feel. The room exceeded our expectations and was very clean. We had a queen bed, sitting area by a fireplace ( which we used every night since it's cold in SF ), complimentary water bottles, tea and coffee, clean bathtub, and complimentary continental breakfast. Since we stayed during the pandemic, they gave us the option to call for our wine and nibbles or breakfast and set up a designated space for us or we were able to have it in our room. Our experience. We stayed for our wedding anniversary, upon arrival our host ( Luis Medina ), was what took our stay to the next level. As soon as we arrived he warmly checked us in and gave us suggestions on where best to park ( it's SF ), he inquired about our stay and then proceeded to go above and beyond. He took out a map and gave us suggestions on where to eat, places to see and the best routes to take to avoid traffic. After that he set up wine and snacks downstairs by the fireplace for my husband and I to enjoy. After that we took his advice and went on a night on the town for dinner and sightseeing. Later as we returned, he turned the fireplace on in our room ( I couldn't figure it out ) and wished us a good evening. It's people like Luis that take a typical stay at a hotel and transform it into lasting memories. I just stayed here for 3 days, from December 23rd to December 26th. From the check in, valet car perk to check out. Everything was super smooth and easy. Hotel is designed with the European style theme. They have thought about everything you need in a room. Wine and cheese at 5pm and breakfast in the morning is very satisfying. Love the old school lift/elevator. It's located in between all the place you will usually want to visit. I'll definitely go back. read more

A fireplace that I could turn on and off from my bed. The decor is just plain fun with so many colors. I treated myself to the valet parking which made my visit so easy. The other guests were world travelers. A couple of stories for later included the old fashioned elevator and one of the bathroom lights turns itself off after a few minutes. An English Inn. We got upgraded from a queen room to a king and loved how spacious the room was as well as the decor. Loved the fireplace in our room and having it going in the morning and before going to bed! The sheets were great and our bed was super comfy. Loved wine and nibbles hour in the evening and included breakfast was a nice perk. They have an old manual elevator, which is pretty neat. there are many positive reviews written and I wish I could say the same but unfortunately i can't. My husband had booked a suite for our anniversary and when we arrived we had two separate rooms, one bedroom and one sitting area separated by a small hallway and a door. We had to open each area separately and it wasn't what we expected. Another thing,the walls were so thin so we could hear everything from upstairs noise to the outdoor noise. I swear I could hear people having sex upstairs. Really?? Like WTF? Also SF was having a heat wave and no air conditioning, no fans offered or anything. We opened our windows but no breeze at all. In the evening my husband and I were downstairs in the courtyard and we saw two large rodents run along the wall. I hurried back to our room with the opened windows to close them for fear that the rodents would go into our room. I think a solution would be to add window screens to keep out rodents. I would have loved to keep my windows open since it was soooo warm I simply couldn't believe it! Also the Tv options was pathetic and most of the channels were in a different language and couldn't figure out how to change it I think management should try spending a night to see what the customers experience For the positive comment, service was good and breakfast was nice Hotel location and history were awesome We had booked two nights but had to leave after the experience of the first night. The White Swan Inn is the best kept secret in SF. After looking for a place to stay for one night in the city and being discouraged by all of the extra fees and charges most places were adding onto the rooms, I found White Swan and it felt like it was too good to be true. Not only did they not have additional "resort fees" but they included so many extras into the stay. The room came complimentary drinks in the mini bar, breakfast , cookies and evening wine and appetizers. So generous and hospitable. We even saved and found free overnight parking on the street right outside when we arrived. The quirky and fun decor was so charming and I loved the old world charm mixed with modern art. The room was big and comfortable. We cozied up by the fireplace right after we arrived and it was such a fun bonus to creating the relaxing space we needed on our getaway. The location is central to all of the places and sights in the city and the neighborhood feels safe to walk around. We will definitely be coming back to White Swan for our next stay in the city. My only hesitancy in leaving such a glowing review is that others will discover this hidden gem and make it harder to book next time we come. read more

We had a lovely night here. It's the perfect combination of old world charm and modern amenities. The room was comfy and clean, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The White Swan Inn is a MUST. You are right in the heart of downtown San Francisco, but not enough so that you are concerned about cleanliness, safety or homelessness. You enter this adorable b&b into the quaint main lobby only to find that it is adorably decorated with retro and vintage decor from floor to ceiling. That's just the beginning. The staff is the most kind, welcoming, personable and caring staff I have really ever encountered before. You are greeted with sincerity, generosity and utmost hospitality. Braulio-one of the kind men at the front desk took time to sincerely chat with us, giving recommendations, chatting about his life and ours, all while offering the most incredible hospitality. The rooms are adorable, so vintage and so funky that you just have to love them! Everything is clean and tidy. Each evening there is "wine and nibbles", where you get to snack on your own personal platter of cheese, crackers and figs while drinking a nice glass of your choice of red or white wine. All of this takes place in their warm, comfortable and visually appealing lounge areas (pictured). Or you can sit outside in their quiet, cute little private terrace (which you also have a view of from some of the rooms) and listen to the songs of the birds while enjoying some fresh air. Each morning you walk downstairs to their sitting area furnished with tables and chairs and the kind staff serves you a small, yet delicious breakfast. During my stay we had something different each morning-bagels, croissants, and banana bread, each paired with fruit. Absolutely loved it here! We arrived in San Francisco Friday morning and did not want to leave our luggage in the car so we dropped them off at the hotel. They were very pleasant about us dropping off the luggage. We had so much planned on our first day that we didn't check in until almost midnight. Peter and the staff was very helpful and pleasant. They brought our bags upstairs along with wine and glasses and made sure our room was okay and our fridge stocked with drinks before the two men left our room. The second day we had breakfast downstairs. The atmosphere in the living and dining room made me feel at home. Loved it! The breakfast buffet was very delicious! So many choices - fruits, pastries, eggs, meats breads and oatmeal. The kitchen staff was also very pleasant and helpful when I asked for ketchup and Tabasco. When we left the hotel on our second day I had left the "Privacy" tag on the door. We didn't come back until almost midnight again. The staff was very pleasant in bringing us water and towels. Leon was very helpful on our last day. We went to the Wharf on the Cable car and returned to the hotel after 12 noon. We found out that our bags were locked in the room. Leon was very pleasant and helpful in getting our bags out and waiting until we collected all of our belongings. Then he went to get our car and loaded up our bags. This is a boutique hotel on Bush Street we really enjoyed. It is dated and quaint which some patrons may not care for. Our room was decent sized and comfortable including a gas fireplace, sitting area and wet bar alcove. The hotel has an elevator probably from the 1920s. It probably works better than most new ones and is a step back in time. Hotel was clean and refurbished well to preserve its original finishes. Best of all is the lower floor parlor which includes excellent coffee and several areas to lounge including a parlor with fireplace, an outdoor enclosed patio and a deck with tables and some greenery. An excellent buffet breakfast was included. We would stay here again. read more

We enjoyed our stay. Nice area, some parts have homeless at night a few blocks away but they dont really bother you. Lots of restaurants nearby to eat... pizzeria, ramen, etc. Lots of decent bars around, I counted 3 next to the hotel. Close to the Fairmont hotel (go to the Tonga room for live music!). Shopping nearby, going back uphill was a lil tiring. Breakfast is from 7-11a on weekends. They served a nice breakfast... scrambled eggs w spinach/onions, quiche, sausage, variety of fresh fruit, cereal, oatmeal, variety of fresh pastries, juice, coffee. Its located on the first level (basement); very cute area. The evening reception is here as well, 5-6:30p. I think we missed the wine but there were leftover cheese, fruit tarts, pea salad, fruit left around 6:10ish. Room was nice, larger than i thought. Nice english-like decor. Very clean! Floor looks new. Fireplace, just flip the switch. In room fridge w soda and water (coke, diet coke, water). They gave us nice champagne for our anniversary. Nice touch. Bed was soft, it was fine for us. Overheard someone complaining about their mattress being too soft..receptionist say all beds are the same. There's about 6-8 rooms on each floor. The lift was kind of tricky at first since its an early generation elevator. But we got the hang of it and it was fun to ride. Im not sure if a full size wheelchair can fit in, kind of narrow opening. Short set of stairs only from sidewalk to lobby. We rented a car from alamo just a block away from the hotel with decent pricing. read more

QBritish-themed decor with lots of swans! The easiest check-in we have ever experienced. The room was one of the largest we've had in San Francisco. And they have a gas fireplace in every room. We used it most nights (May in San Francisco can be a little cool). We booked at the White Swan in large part because it has a breakfast that came with our room. The breakfast was Continental, with first-rate pastry or muffins, fresh fruit, orange juice, oatmeal, cold cereal, and good coffee. In the afternoon, they serve wine with cheese or savory snacks. Best of all is the staff. Everyone is very nice, very helpful; they seem to really like their jobs and it shows! The public transportation is not ideal. It's 1 1/2 blocks from the cable car ($8.00 with no transfer) or a big uphill walk from a muni bus and a bigger uphill walk from the Market Street light railway. Costs about what big chain hotels charge, but this inn has charm (and a vintage elevator). read more
