We were delightfully surprised at how wonderful the hotel is. We were greeted at the check-in desk with a smile and a warm welcome. We arrived several hours before check in; however, we were able to get into our room right away. The room was beautifully appointed and was spacious compared to. other hotels. I've stayed out in San Francisco. The room had a pod coffee maker and a mini fridge as well as a safe. There is a carafe in the room which can be used at the filtered water stations on several floors of the hotel. The location is close to Union Square; however, it is up a steep hill for those who are walking. Overall, I loved the hotel and would definitely stay at the Orchard again!!! read more

Arrived on a Friday and left Monday. The 9 th floor room was quiet from internal and street noise. The desk staff was friendly. My major issue is this... woke up after the first night and noticed the underside of the comforter had a stain on it. To me it looked like it could have been blood? that didn't launder out. Still it made us queasy and I notified the front desk requesting they completely change the comforter. They were apologetic and said yes it would be changed. When we left for the day I even left the bed linen request change card directly on the stain so the housekeeper could see. Got in late at night, bed looked tidy and exhausted went to sleep. Woke up the next morning and noticed nothing had been changed. The stained comforter was the same! with the stain facing down so you couldn't see unless you looked underneath. I went down to the desk and showed them two photos of the stain I had taken on both mornings. They were very apologetic and offered us free breakfast the next morning and assured me it would be taken care of. Came back to the room that night to see the bed all made up tidy but now with the same stain on the top! Very obvious!! Went to the desk again and went over the whole scenario showing the desk clerk the photos. They sent someone up shortly who removed the comforter and left. Waited several minutes wanting to go to sleep and I'm wondering is this person coming back? I call the desk and they say he'll be back and the guy returns shortly giving us a comforter for what seems to be a double bed not the queen we have. It was the last night and I was over it and tired..... Didn't take them up with the free breakfast either. read more

I stayed at the Orchard Hotel about 3 times, I had no complaints except for my last visit. I stayed for one night and wanted to plan something romantic for my bf and I. I checked in and ordered food so the front desk guy knew I staying there. I left to explore the city then came back with my boyfriend we dropped off our things and left again, the front desk guy seen us both leave. I come back alone a few hours later and my door key does not work, it worked when I came with my bf so I was confused why it wasn't working when I came back. Then I remembered the front desk guy staring at us without greeting us, his vibe was off he was not friendly at all, he must have thought me and my bf came for our fun and left immediately after which was not the case at all. After trying multiple times I go back downstairs to the lobby and this time it was a new guy working the desk, I told him that my key does not work, I just checked in today and it was working fine earlier. He asked my room number and name, he then typed it into the computer and it looked like he had to check me in again, he handed me another key card. I knew the other front desk guy that checked me in that day instantly checked me out when he seen me and my bf leave the hotel together. I was very annoyed and confused because why would he check me out of the hotel just hours before he checked me. Definitely won't be back. This hotel is walking distance from the Bush entrance to Chinatown. It's not far from it's sister hotel. Booking was super easy and the room requested was to my specifications (we were placed on the fifth floor, away from the elevator). The room was decent and very spacious, the bathroom as well. Note there was no tub in our bathroom. The whole area was tidy. There was the typical large t.v., mini fridge, Keurig, large table with chairs, plenty of fresh towels and hair dryer. We really appreciate the large glass bottle and the where plenty of water filling stations. read more

Well they made us move rooms at 11PM after a all day concert because of a "plumbing problem" well there was no problem in our room I actually believe that they were trying to move us from a upgraded room to which we checked in on Friday 8/1 to a MUCH smaller, old smelly dirty room with stained carpet and bedding and no tub. After complaining they moved us again a second time I believe this was because it was the first weekend in a year that SF was sold out due to the Grateful Dead concerts! I think they were trying to move us to rent our room from the 254.00 rate we had at Booking.com to a rate of 850.00 on a sold out weekend ! Sleezey tactics, in addition my girlfriend lost her e wallet with all the ridiculous moving at 12am and they made zero effort to help find it ... we called numerous times as her location on her phone said it was there ... no effort was made to help also she left her vanity mirror and backpack behind and no one bothers to tell us about it ...so great service ... not !! Not to mention when we asked to talk to a manger on Saturday night during the move we were told he was "sleeping!" Gee I wish we were ! In the room we rented ! Nice customer service... lastly no one ever ... not once offered a discount or a room up grade because if the "plumbing problem" one would think that would be standard, ?? unless I'm right about the switch a roo due to the room rates! Makes sense... I never once saw any plumber or maintenance worker trying to fix Anything at all !!! I also saw NO ONE else moving rooms .... Not one !!! My wife and I loved the Orchard Hotel during our 4 night stay. It was a little more expensive than we wanted to spend but it was worth it. We we worried about the homeless situation and crime but this hotel is situated outside of the more concentrated area. No homeless or seedy characters to be seen outside of the hotel and there was at least 3 eateries within a 1/2 block from the hotel. The restaurant was closed for dinner but it did have a breakfast menu which we didn't partake in . We liked the filtered water station on 3 different floors and on the bottom floor. That helped us with the water for the day and for drinking in the room. We also brought ramen bowls to eat in the room which they were gracious to offer us a tea kettle to use for our stay. The front desk always had an friendly attendant and they texted me daily to see if we had any questions or needed anything. The room was mostly clean. There was some stains on the carpet but overall it was clean and tidy. The water ran hot and cool in the shower but it was ok. The AC was cool and was more than enough for the room. The bathrooms are big and the room was sizable for our stay. More than enough space for 2. There was a mini refrigerator and a ok sized tv in the room. There was also a keurig and more than enough cups for your needs. The room was cleaned daily and it was done perfectly. I would defiantly stay at the Orchard Hotel again. This is a very quaint charming hotel centrally located in Union Square. Check in was very simple. Given a very nice room with a great view. The room was a decent, bed was very comfortable, sheets nice and soft and bathroom was huge. Hotel staff was very knowledgeable and helpful with the typical tourist questions. Absolutely a hidden gem - I even hesitate to recommend it because I'd like to continue being able to get in! The rooms were spotless, as was the rest of the hotel. Extremely comfortable bedding. Good breakfast, lovely hang area downstairs that apparently is sometimes a full restaurant and/or bar, though not while we stayed. Breakfast was expensive but I have to say that I've also never been served avocado toast with an entire avocado neatly cut up and laying across the toast. There are other breakfast places nearby, but this dining room was definitely the nicest. If you're here on business and need a breakfast meeting you won't go wrong. There are 3 or 4 water stations in the hotel as well, and a pitcher in the room. I kept that and my two leftover Clear Water bottles filled and it was more than adequate - plus, the water tasted great. (Note to self: find out who makes those machines and investigate one for the home!) The only complaint I would have was the coffee. I ordered some to go after breakfast and it was was the worst I've ever had, and that's saying some. It was served with grounds floating on the top; the waitress immediately replaced it, but the coffee itself was still wretched. Still, excellent value for dollar in a district right near the streetcar (but my room was pretty quiet). Highly recommend. read more

This is a very beautiful hotel, located not far from the heart of Union square. While there isn't anything I can say bad about the scenery, the customer service was just absolutely horrible. When we first checked in, I inquired about the homeless people lounging around the streets, in which they replied "it wouldn't be their problem" and if I have any other questions concerning them. When I asked for food recommendations I was only directed to the Ghirardelli factory which to my surprise was on water. It was just a lot of weird energy in the hotel from ambiance to service to hotel staff. Not to mention, when I asked to speak to management the whole week I was here, They were "not on site". The Orchard Hotel is a not-so-hidden gem in San Francisco. I had never heard of it prior to researching boutique hotels near Union Square, but it quickly rose to the top of the list for ticking all the boxes on my list of must-haves, including a convenient location, comfortable and spacious rooms, and walking distance to a variety of restaurants. The king suites (600 sq ft) are large by San Francisco standards and priced competitively; check them out if your budget allows. Check-in and check-out were a breeze, and the front desk staff were all kind and super helpful--even checking in via text message during our stay to be sure that we were happy with our room and to inquire whether we might need anything. I look forward to returning to the Orchard for another stay whenever an opportunity arises--and will definitely recommend it to my friends as well. read more

The room was plenty large with a small fridge and a coffee maker (with 4 pods) The staff were very friendly and helpful, letting us leave our bags for several hours after check out and providing late check out. Plenty of restaurants walking distance, esp Chinatown. I only wish the hotel had coffee and water in the lobby or just inside the restaurant area, even for purchase. The Orchard Hotel is located on the south side of Bush Street just east of Powell. Not to be confused with the Orchard Garden Hotel which is also on Bush but east of Grant, this place is located just east of Powell and the cable car line. When reading about the Orchard they may seem to call themselves a boutique hotel it's always a terminology that eludes me because there is no real definite definition of that. When I think boutique I think small. This hotel isn't that small. The rooms certainly are nowhere near small considering the location, the cost and the ambiance. Well I guess it's arguable because it's like calling your restaurant a gastropub instead of just a bar and grill. Something by a different name implies something else? I really do not care. What I do care about is that the Orchard Hotel is one of the best places I've ever stayed at in the city of San Francisco. I've never stayed at the Mark Hopkins, Fairmont or Ritz or anything like that in San Francisco but I've been to places that are considered classy(er) and fancy(er) but relatively speaking those places tend to be a bit more expensive. Sure I've stayed in SoHo in NYC in what I can only call a boutique hotel experience and it wasn't as great. There was hardly any room to move around and it seemed so minimalist. If the Orchard Hotel wants to call themselves boutique be my guest but seriously this place is nice and an amazing bang for the buck considering the quality of the rooms, furnishings and most of all the location. I booked the Orchard Hotel through Expedia and used my points to pay for most of it. 200ish USD for a particular week in late August in this location of San Francisco for a hotel of this quality in my opinion is an amazing deal. The rooms are very clean, very well furnished, well lit and the space... Let's just say I wasn't expecting the room to be this spacious. Even the bathroom is probably closer to triple the size I've seen in normal 3-4 star hotels all around the country but when you have a city where space is an absolute premium, the bathroom felt like the Grand Canyon. The room is one of the most comfortable rooms I've had the pleasure of staying in. The furnishings from the bed, night stands, desk etc all seemed in pristine condition and the feel of the room had a familiar warm feeling. Even the walls seemed less stark because of the textured wallpaper. As far as the staff they were quite friendly but only staying a single night I didn't have that much interaction. What I can say is that checking in was a charm, the room was pretty much perfect and it was so comfortable and quiet. The overall value of the Orchard to me is spot on. The location is pretty much neutral to many hot spots or at least makes them accessible. This location of San Francisco is close to Union Square and Market Street for shopping. Chinatown Gate at Grant is just a couple blocks east. The Powell cable cars are a few hundred feet away and the California cable cars are up two blocks. I really can't say much more about the Orchard but to say I was completely satisfied with our stay and I'd stay there again. read more

Room was very clean, hallways the same. Lobby and bar / restaurant are much nicer than what is shown in pictures. Prices are a little excessive for what is offered. Really enjoyed our short stay at The Orchard and would highly recommend as well as consider again for my next day in SF. read more

This is a review for the bar area of The Orchard Hotel which is called Daffodil. It's a classy hotel bar - not too big and not too small. Happy Hour served daily from 4:30-6:30PM . 1/2 off wine, beer, and well cocktails. The cocktail menu tries to aim towards local spirits and smaller batch made products as well as local beer and wine. Prices are really fair for a hotel bar and will run you around $10 which isn't bad for the area. Other than that they have regular drink specials. I'd definitely recommend Daffodil if you're looking for a chill place to grab a drink not far from Union Square. read more

This hotel seems to be the standard for boutique hotels in San Francisco. It has a small and quaint lobby, a decently reviewed restaurant, and is right in the middle of the city. The experience I had here was actually quite good. Check-in was fairly simple and the bell staff were quite nice. The room was pretty and it overlooks the street. They seem to have double pane windows so the noise isn't too overwhelming, despite being right on the boulevard. The rooms were nice, this definitely was a tear above your standard Marriott or Hilton Garden Inn. They also offered nice amenities. Hot towels in the lobby as well as fruit infused water in the summertime. All of the staff are wonderful and treated us as expected or above. They all seem like they were happy to be there and always had a smile on their face. I'll definitely go back next time I'm in town. read more

This hotel was wonderful! The reception was fantastic. Everyone cooing over my kiddos was an ego boost. The upgrade to a suite went by without a hitch. The room was clean and interesting. I was slightly disappointed that there was a sofa and not a pullout in the suite and it was rather uncomfortable for the kiddo because it was a faux leather material, but he's 4 so he could sleep on a rock with little issue. The location was fantastic! We were only at the hotel for a night for business but I did go for a quick walk through Union Square that was quite beautiful. I did have a major reaction (hives and rashiness on my face) from the soap. I'm not sure if it's an ingredient I'm allergic to, but that's my bad for using hotel soap on my face. Oh well! read more

The Orchard Hotel gets the basics right in a excellent location for both business and leisure travelers. The rooms are dead silent with good sound insulation in the walls and a quiet HVAC system. The hotel is maintained to a very high standard. The location is excellent being close to Union Square, downtown and the Powell Street cable car for trips to Fisherman's Wharf. The one caveat is that the fitness room in the hotel is small, but passes to a nearby gym are offered for a small charge. read more

Very clean and spacious hotel rooms, as well as very large bathroom! The lobby staff was ALWAYS polite. Coffee/water/tea in the lobby (coffee not during the early mornings though). The bell hops were very nice and accomodating. We dropped our luggage off before check in since our flight arrived early, and we left our luggage there for a few hours after we had to check out (our flight was at night for a red-eye back to the East Coast). I've stayed in a fair number of hotels, and this place is by far my favorite. My room was spotless, very spacious, and the bed was comfortable. Location cannot be beat. It is 2 blocks away from Chinatown's gate and the Hyde-Powell cablecar stops right on the corner (Bush & Powell). You're also walking distance to Union Square and Grace Cathedral. The staff at this hotel was absolutely amazing. They were friendly and helpful. I lost my phone in the Lyft ride and the doorman was right there to help me. Everyone was just so nice! If you want a moderately priced hotel that is well located I highly recommend The Orchard (not The Orchard Green btw). The area was also pretty safe for The City. I am woman traveling solo and I walked around fine at like 10pm in a 3 block radius. Anything farther that 2-3 blocks I would walk with someone or take a cab (or Lyft Line). read more

It was nice of them to let my drunk friend in when she lost her hotel key - but why was the hotel lobby closed at 2 am anyways? I thought it would be staffed 24 hours. Unfortunately, I would not pay the full $275 for a room here (pricelined it, and it still didn't feel worth the $175 I paid). I've never heard of a hotel having twin beds instead of fulls! How the hell are four people supposed to stay here? There are barely any amenities to make up for the pricing otherwise. It's hard to beat this place for the money. You could do a lot worse at comparably-priced hotels in the area. It's not the Westin... but it typically costs less than half of that. We found the place to be clean, with spacious rooms and a few noteworthy extras: superbly helpful staff, wineglasses in the room, free newspapers, free wifi, and a minifridge. On the same block, there are two good restaurants that are both open late, a good little bar, and an awesome more-than-convenience-but-not-quite-a-grocery store open until midnight. As others have noted, the garage at Sutter and Stockton is a convenient, and less expensive place to park. read more

Like many others, I too was looking for an affordable hotel for a Valentine's Day getaway from Boston. It is one of the only green hotels in San Fran, I believe. The room was very clean and spacious. The gentleman managing the front desk was very nice and friendly when we checked in around midnight. The front desk also has a good collection of DVDs to borrow in case you want to have a quiet night in. On a side note, the hotel sits along one of the trolleys, but during busy hours the trolley can get packed quickly. Plenty of restaurants in walking distance though. I have to say, I hate traveling to the city! all the one-way streets, closed lanes, honking cars, and don't get me started on the double-parked Uber drivers!!! Last weekend was my girlfriend's birthday, and she planned this elaborate trip to the city. Hotel, fine dining, a show at the Museum, breakfast, and day on the pier. (I know, that's my job, but I took her 2 weeks ago to Disneyland with a couple of her friends for a no kids Adult trip. Man, what a blast! But i digress....) She booked a standard room using points on her Credit Card so immediately expected to get the treatment... " here is a hot blonde with her country bumpkin boyfriend... going to be playing banjo in the hallway... didn't help that I showed up in a ball cap and flipflops. Again, I digress...) After a stressful drive up to the city, we were greeted by the most hospitable staff I have ever encountered while working in the city. Roy at the front desk checked us in. When he enquired as to the nature of our stay and found out it was for her birthday, Roy immediately upgraded us to a suite! Here we are using points, being upgraded?!?! Bam! That just happened. Once we arrived to our Suite, I began to pick it apart with a fine-tooth comb. I have ADD, OCD, XYZ, LMNOP.... I white-gloved the entire room, top of the cabinets, top of the mirrors, top of the door jams. Nada! Spotless! Who dusts the top of the doorjams?!?! I don't even do that at home! Amazing Room. During our stay we did receive turndown service twice! Go Connie! Girl you rock! Your infectious smile first thing was almost more powerful that my morning RockStar! I said almost... Checkout was a breeze. Checkout was at 12. No rush no pressure. Overall, the place was a 10/10! It definitely was the kickoff to a stellar weekend for BABS and I. I am counting the days to our next trip to San Francisco and our stay at the Orchard Hotel! We absolutely loved this hotel! Very good reasonable rates and the location was perfect. Union Square was 2 blocks behind us down the hill as well as Sear's Fine Food and Lori's Diner. There were some really cool bars that we stopped in. The cable car stopped right on the corner. Uncle Vito's Pizza was across the street and on the corner. We had a blast walking at night and taking pictures and videos of the sights and sounds of SF. We got to know the clerk at a liquor store down the street because we would stop in every night for Calistoga Water which I couldn't get enough of. The staff at the Orchard Hotel were so nice and accommodating. From the first day every time we stepped off the elevator we were greeted by our names and they were always asking us if we had any questions, needed help or directions. Our room was very clean, nicely decorated and the bed was so soft and comfortable. Large fluffy pillows covered the bed. The bathroom was large, clean and had good quality soap, etc. Housekeeping were very good at cleaning our room. The also have free WIFI. I would definitely recommend the Orchard Hotel to anyone going to SF. The Orchard Hotel is not as good as it gets, but it is pretty close. We will be staying at the Orchard Hotel on our next visit! read more

My husband and I had a wonderful experience at the Orchard Garden Hotel! The customer service was spectacular - they went out of the way to open doors for us, give us directions, answer questions, and make us feel welcome. The room was very nice and spacious (especially for San Francisco!). Everything was very clean and felt safe/secure. We didn't really have much of a view (interior of the hotel, so essentially a wall) but we could have paid a bit more and gotten a better one. The location was excellent, right in the financial district and on the edge of Chinatown and Union Square! The only thing was that it was impossible to find on Google Maps and our Uber drivers had a lot of trouble getting there. So, pro tip: let your drivers know that it's right beside the Chinatown gate :) Overall, we loved the experience and would definitely stay there again! read more

San Francisco is a difficult city for picking a hotel. You want it to be comfortable, in a great location, and not too expensive. I've stayed at The Orchard Hotel several times for business trips and this place fits the description. By SF standards, the rooms are very spacious. They have a car service you can use once a day within a certain radius. They always have delicious chocolate candies for their guest. And the room is very comfortable (and it bears repeating, quite spacious for SF). If you're traveling to SF, you should consider staying here to see for yourself! read more

Found this hotel on hotels.com and the photos made it look promising, but it wasn't really that great when we got there and settled in. The view wasn't good from our room (facing other rooms with little space or sunlight), the room didn't have a separate shower from the bathtub as pictured on hotels.com, and the carpet looked pretty dirty by the door. Bed wasn't the most comfortable for the price. There wasn't a box spring-- just a mattress on a wooden frame. I had to unplug the fridge as we were exhausted going to sleep because it was making an awful noise that sounded like a beeping alarm going off. Unfortunately we had to leave behind the things that went bad in the fridge. Overall I would stay somewhere else next time i visit sf. Staff was nice but it's a dingy hotel for the price. here's my personal hotel inspection list: good location- DOUBLE CHECK conditioner- CHECK comfy bed- CHECK cleanliness- CHECK ample amt of pillows- CHECK quality blow dryer- CHECK (none of that built into the wall vacuum cleaner looking type crap) free strong wifi- CHECK (yes, it has to be free) large non-claustrophobic room- CHECK the location of the hotel cannot get any better. it's just right up powell, super close to the BART station and there is a cable car stop right outside of the hotel on bush and powell. a "lobby" at the orchard is pretty much nonexistent, only a couple of benches and the front desk lined up near the elevator. i really don't mind because the lobby space is definitely sacrificed for the large roomy guest room and bathroom. the restroom located behind the lobby is very well kept and clean. while passing by the lobby to the restrooms i noticed a table filled with a plethora of awards, and one of them being the orchard hotel recognized as a woman owned business. goooooo girl power :) i will definitely stay here again. i highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting sf :) read more

I'm a Marriott and Hilton loyalist but didn't book far enough in advance and frankly wasn't willing to pay $400 plus a night. I read the reviews here and still was a little hesitant but I took the leap and will never look back. Its not inexpensive by any stretch -- $996 for three nights after taxes and one breakfast charged to the room. Clean, nicely appointed but not luxury and brand new. King bed rivaled the comfort of the Marriott that I'm used to!!! The restaurant was a wonderful surprise... the breakfasts were very nice and had healthy choices and the coffee was exceptionally bold, smooth and aromatic-- I could almost drink it without creamer. Service was extremely friendly although I used Uber for all my rides, they were quick to hale a cab and give you directions. Absolutely would use this hotel on return visits as a first choice now. Close to Union Square, the wharf, the financial district and my now favorite foot/body massage place... Fung Soong on Kearny Street. Stopped in daily for massages!!! Left room at 10:00 in the morning. Not made up when we returned at 3:00. ATTITUDE stinks as if it was our fault. Housekeeper said she was too busy for us. Avoid this place as if it were poison. Only black stares from front desk as if they did not understand English. . read more
