I wanted to share what a positive impact my time at Carlson Gracie (formerly Gracie Barra) has been…read moreon my life. I have always had an interest in Jiu Jitsu, but felt intimidated getting started. Although I played sports, I had no martial arts experience prior to starting. After the birth of my son and maintaining a stressful job, I knew I needed a outlet for stress. I finally decided to give it a try. Professor Andre, Camila, Patricia, and Gary all were so welcoming from the moment that I first walked into the gym. I tried one other gym before Carlson Gracie and it was night and day the difference in atmosphere. You can tell that everyone at CG is passionate about BJJ and the positive impact it can have on your life. One aspect of the gym I really want to emphasize and was unexpected was the social element. I can truly say that I feel like I have bonded with many of the other members and have made many friends through jiu jitsu. The culture is very encouraging and fun and it is not uncommon for people to stick around after class to talk and have a good laugh together. Before starting, (based on stories I read online about BJJ in general) I was concerned about more advanced students engaging in intimidation or hazing practices. I am happy to say at CG the complete opposite is true. The more advanced students have clearly had good training and go out of their way to make people feel welcomed and to teach to your ability. Professor Andre, Patricia, and Gary are all actively competing which means they are at the top of their game. Professor Andre was been ranked in the top three nationally for his weight class (something I didn't know until I got started). Despite this, they treat everyone who walks in with dignity, respect, and care. The coaches are very attentive, focused, and dedicated to helping you be the best you can be no matter your size or athletic ability. During warm ups, drilling, and rolling they are enthusiastic, excited, and incredibly perceptive concerning giving precise feedback that can help you improve. You can tell considerable thought goes into maintaining a culture that mixes fun and competitiveness which really makes you want to keep getting better. In addition to the culture, training, and atmosphere being top notch, this is also a great option for getting into shape. Over the course of four months I lost about 30 pounds from going to train consistently. I can honestly say at age 37 I am likely in the best shape of my life in terms of cardio and flexibility. This is not something I thought I would ever say as I was nearing 40. Concerning the facilities, the gym is very clean and you can tell great care goes into maintaining a professional and sanitary atmosphere. I have never been concerned about cleanliness and compared to others gyms I have visited while out of town, this was by far the most well maintained. Personally, I find this element to be important as it adds a level of comfort to the setting. Professor Andre makes a point to say that the gym is a family and thats what it feels like. The training is great and it really makes you appreciate the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I look forward to going to the gym everyday. I cannot recommend Carlson Gracie of Carrollton enough!

Campuzano Martial Arts - Best MMA school!

Campuzano Martial Arts is absolutely the best in every way. I grew up with martial arts, and…read morecontinued throughout my 26 years in the Marines. I have multiple black belts, so have a pretty decent eye for what techniques and training might work in real-world situations. When we moved to Texas this past summer, I visited six martial arts schools in the area that I pre-screened before arriving. Within five minutes of walking in the door of Campuzano Martial Arts, I knew it would be perfect for my three young kids. I immediately surrendered my credit card and begged them to charge it. Here is my reasoning: First, Will and his wife Adi are two of the kindest people you could ever meet. They don't run the gym like a business, they run it like they are training family. They love what they do and are passionate about the development of each student. Second, they train kids for situations they would run into in the real-world, from a very young age all the way into adulthood. This includes kickboxing and wrestling. What your kids learn now will stick with them via muscle memory throughout their lives. Third, Will and Bailey are professional fighters and train kids to have that mentality. They are kind and patient, yet are able to push kids past their perceived limits. Will and Bailey are the best I've seen at developing kids to be their best, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Personal beliefs and experiences played a role in why we chose Campuzano Martial Arts: From a broad perspective, I always rule out taekwondo and karate type schools. They train in traditional ways of fighting, which are minimally practical in the world today... unless someone wants a role in a Chuck Norris movie. Also, they make money charging for each of numerous belt promotion tests (mostly just a show for the parents), which adds up significantly over time. Jiu-jitsu schools just award the next belt when the kids are ready. Anyone mildly proficient in mixed martial arts (jiu-jitsu, wrestling, boxing, and street fighting techniques) would wipe out a black belt in taekwondo or karate with minimal effort. If you truly care about bully-proofing your kids for a lifetime, Campuzano Martial Arts is the right school. When we lived in California, to learn all these different fighting techniques (jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, and wrestling primarily), my kids would have had to go to three different training studios, and most don't train kids. Campuzuno Martial Arts is the only school I know of that trains in all three, for kids, and does it exceptionally well. Why we strongly prefer No-Gi vs Gi jiu-jitsu training (Campuzano trains No-Gi): Gi: Kimono type uniform (Heavy cotton jacket and pants) No-Gi: Shirt and shorts Most big Brazilian jiu-jitsu schools train in Gi exclusively. I believe this is practical for tournament fighting, but impractical in the real-world. The opponents Gi can be used for grips and chokes in tournaments. Since bullies and bad guys outside of tournaments don't wear Gi's on the streets, probably best to train without them. Adding to the Gi vs No-Gi opinion, my three sons have fought in jiu-jitsu tournaments about every six weeks over this past year. So they can have additional fights (experience) in these tournaments, I always sign them up in both the Gi and No-Gi divisions. I bought generic Gi's off the internet, since we don't train that way at Campuzano Martial Arts. Regardless, my sons almost always beat the Gi only kids, and often in a very big way. The kids they beat come mostly from the large 'brand-name' jiu-jitsu schools and franchises who only send their best. Those kids often leave disappointed. Campuzano training and tough mindset makes all the difference. Will and Bailey are always there to support kids in the tournaments. They go out of their way to support their fighters. One recent example: I signed my kids up to fight in a tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma, about a five-hour drive north, not expecting to have any professional coaching support. However, without hesitation, Will cleared his schedule just to make sure he was there. He will always go out of his way to support the families at his school. Will has a big, soft teddy bear heart underneath his tough exterior. For these reasons, I am so grateful we found Campuzano Martial Arts. It is everything I want my kids to learn, and all in one location. Training from professional fighters in all aspects of self defense, in a loving way. What my three little guys are learning now will serve them for a lifetime... self-confidence, self-control, physical and mental toughness, and emotional calm when life gets challenging. My kids love coming to Campuzano Martial Arts. I have no doubt your kids will love it too!

But if you are looking for a place to sharpen your character while you sharpen your skills, Sharpen Iron Academy (SIA) in Plano is in a league of its own. At SIA, you aren't just a number; the professors know you by name and are genuinely vested in your success both on and off the mat. This is a culture of discipline, accountability, and mentorship where the "iron sharpens iron" philosophy is lived daily. Whether it's the kids' classes, the youth program, or the specialized women-only classes, there is a deep level of trust and a guaranteed safe space for every student. It is more than a gym--it is a community and a family where you are pushed to grow in a supportive, high-level environment.

Their Godfather helped me research studios and after reading the CV for their head instructor Professor Henrique it was time to give it a shot. They had a lot of fun during the trial class, but they were nervous to start, not wanting to be away from Mom even though I was only three feet off the mat. Thankfully SIA instructors are not only skilled at keeping students engaged during training, but are very family centered, patient and caring. They were able to connect with each one of my kiddos so that they felt comfortable training as I looked on. By parent teacher conferences in February their preschool teacher let me know that both had grown so much in maturity and confidence and was curious to know what I was doing differently. Almost two years later the twins are well adjusted, focused and always happy when they step off the mat after an hour training session. Professor Henrique, Professor Lucas, Professor Matheus, Coach Queila, Coach Enrique, Coach Ian, Coach Ella, and Coach Anthony have become family and there is no other place I would have my children be twice a week. They offer adult classes in the morning and evening and several of the parents after seeing the transformation in their own children have started to earn their stripes as well.
