All that being said, Steep Creek is a great stop for kayaking gear with experts on location. They also have real good food and drinks including fruit smoothies. I was just in there a few days ago and the manager let me know that they just picked up an espresso machine and plan on adding espresso drinks to their menu this fall. The atmosphere is sporty and a bit cluttered but fun and warm. The spirit of the northwoods outdoors enthusiast is captured in the decor and the people working there. The good - Our guide was excellent - he showed great care in talking about safety while on land, he was patient with the people on the tour who were new to kayaking, and he made sure to lead us to all the sea caves and point out great pictures spots without making the tour feel rushed. The experience on the water was good, and the beauty of the sea caves is just breathtaking. The bad - The communication prior to the start of the tour. We arrived at Meyers Beach around 15 minutes before our 3 PM tour (per the instructions in the confirmation email), and we did not see anyone there associated with Rustic Makwa. Time passes until 2:55, and we still do not see anyone. I check my email: nothing. I eventually call the phone number on the email, and I am assured the guide is "on his way, will be there shortly after 3". We waited until about 3:10, and nobody had arrived. I call the number again and am told that the guide will be there by 3:20. We wait until 3:30, and I text the number: I am told the guide is close by. Finally, around 3:40, just as we are about to leave, our guide finally arrived. Apparently, the guide was waiting for the winds to die down a bit before starting the tour - hence the delay. While I appreciated the tour's commitment to safety, the lack of communication was disheartening. There were only three groups on our tour. The time it would have taken to update us on the tour's current conditions/status (via email/text/phone call) would not have taken long. I understand the weather is unpredictable, and it isn't easy to make the call sometimes on whether or not tours can safely be conducted. However, providing information and updates (without having me chase the information down) would have allowed us to better use our limited time in Bayfield by not having us wait in the parking lot area for almost an hour.

It was strange that they have a whole packing list on their website, but then they said in person that it would be better to bring as little as possible. We thought it would be fine to still bring our bags, but we think it ended up weighing down our kayaks (along with the things the tour guides packed in our kayaks for everyone's lunches like water jugs). Anyway, we ended up being pretty slow (even though I have quite a bit of experience with kayaks), which made things a bit stressful when they kept yelling at us to keep up. The lunch they provided was delicious and the sights were beautiful! It's just hard to be with a group when they're on a time crunch and want us to keep paddling when we want to stop and look at things, but there's not really another option if you're unfamiliar with the wind/weather/current patterns. Overall, it was a good experience, and we bought some nice embroidered sweatshirts after at their store!

We hiked the Lakeshore Trail from the Meyers Beach parking lot. (National Park Service. $5 parking…read morefee; $2.50 if you have a Senior Pass or Access Pass. May, 2023). As noted by others, this is a launch point for kayaks to launch for views of the sea caves and cliffs. We were at this location twice in late May, 2023, and national park Rangers were there on both days (Wednesday, Friday) ensuring that kayakers were prepared for the rough and cold waters, and to provide guidance to hikers. There are clean vault toilets at the location. Regarding the Lakeshore Hike, we did about 2.2 miles of the hike, returning on the same trail to make it about 4.4 miles roundtrip. The trail continues to a campground site (I believe NPS reservations are required) but we didn't go that far. The first 1.8 miles are largely inland, without views of Lake Superior. Of this segment, the first 0.7 miles are almost completely on a double plank boardwalk that goes over swampy land in parts. It requires some stepping up and down on planks, following terrain changes. After you cross a service road at 0.7 miles, the trail alternates between plank boards and regular trails. As you approach the crevasse at 1.8 miles, there are quite a few ascents and descents wherein you go down to a stream-bed and then back up. Some of these are steep but have logs to help with footing. The stream crossings all had sturdy boards or bridges to cross. At 1.8 miles, you reach the crevasse area with views of Lake Superior. Take a look on both sides to see sea caves and the deep crevasse. There are benches here too so it made a great lunch spot. Be careful not to get too close to the edges. It's a long way down! Beyond the crevasse, walk another 0.4 miles to the "basin". This stretch is relatively easy (flat) walking with spectacular views. My husband, who has been hiking in the Himalayas recently, found the entire trail to be easy. For me, I'd characterize it as moderately challenging. On the positive side, there is very little elevation change, so I wasn't huffing and puffing. However, I have balance issues, so I didn't particularly like the footing for the ascents/descents to the stream beds nor all of the roots on the trail. Some of the steps up and down, even on the boardwalk, were also a bit too high for my short legs! Having walked with hiking poles and an occasional hand from my husband helped. Finally, remember bug spray. The mosquitoes are active. 4-star rating overall instead of 5 due to distance required to walk to get views of the sea caves and mosquitoes. 5 stars for the Park Service.

The views from the water are beautiful! I highly recommend the water instead of the walking trail. There are multiple vendors you can rent kayaks and wet suits from. You can even take a guided tour. We personally, have our own kayaks and decided to do our own trip. The DNR do sit at the beach and give you the whole spiel on safety and risks. It is recommended to use sea kayaks due to the rough waters of Lake Superior. We have used normal lake kayaks and used good judgement on the water/ weather conditions. Both times were just fine on the normal kayaks. Just be careful. The waters are freezing all year-round and if you do go overboard near the caves there's no good spot to pull off. Here is my google review…read more Would not recommend. Beware! They are NOT an approved kayaking company by the National Park Service. They rented my son tandem kayaks to go to the Apostle Islands. They gave him a broken radio, no bilge pump and no cockpit cover. They ended up refunding him after he told them that the National Park Service and L5 Kayak expert they ran into told them that this company was putting them at risk for injury or even death. They refused to allow me to talk to the owner. They are comfortable renting broken equipment, allowing you to kayak in a tandem without a cockpit cover so that it fills with water and then not supplying the required bilge pump to get the water out. Go on the National Park Service web page and find a kayak group that meets standards- stay away from this company as it could put your life at risk. The company responded to my google review with this lie "We provided your son and his friend with a detailed two-hour safety course before their rental, clearly demonstrating how to safely use a tandem kayak as intende, with two people paddling together. Despite this, they made the unsafe decision to paddle solo from the back seat and load gear (including beer) into the front cockpit -- a configuration we specifically warn against and prohibit in our waiver. Even though they knowingly violated the rules and misused the equipment, we still issued a full refund as a courtesy. We did this not because we were at fault, but because we recognize that Lake Superior is unforgiving, and we want all our guests to stay safe, even when they make poor choices. We sincerely hope future renters follow our safety training and use the equipment as instructed. We are always here to help, but we cannot prevent incidents when guests ignore the guidance they are given" This is a lie. My son and his friend rented 2 single kayaks. The company gave them 2 tandems. The ranger and another L5 kayak expert saw them before they launched and recommended they not go because they were rented improper equipment. They never even loaded them. What beer?! They are lying to make the reader think they are safe. Please call the Bayfield National park service yourself and talk to the rangers there. They are very familiar with this unsafe and deceptive company. Don't rely on social media. Talk to the experts yourself. You can email or call the park service and they will advise you.

The staff was very helpful and informative, although it was a surprisingly slow Labor Day. There is also a nascent brewery opening in the same building (Adventure Brewing), but they were not yet pouring their first batches (although they should be by now). We took advantage of the short walking paths through the fields, which apparently turn into X-C ski trails once the snow piles up. We were so impressed with Bayfield and its typical annual snowfall that we are planning to return in the winter for a weekend of skiing!

Super friendly people, and they have a gift shop with a lot of cool, quality gear for a really good price, including quit a bit of hats to choose from, as well as t-shirts. Everything was really well coordinated, and went super smoothly (except for me forgetting me kayak "skirt") but it didn't prove to be much of an impedance.

There were 5 to 7 different rapids that we had to navigate. We did not have experience with the rapids. We could have gotten seriously injured. One of the rapids flipped two of us around, so we were going backward. We could not turn and we were both heading for major trees. I had a tree right at head height. This was day 1 of our vacation and it was a horrible experience. There were stones all over that we got caught up on, other places was so shallow we got stuck and then there was the rapids. The worker was at the location where we exited, he asked how it was and all 4 of us said it was awful. He said there is only 1 place where there is rapids. That was not true!! They need to provide maps because we were often paddling hoping we were going in the right direction but the river split. They need to reclassify this route for intermediate experience and make sure everyone understands what it actually will be like. It would have helped if they gave you some understanding of how to handle the rapids. They took our money and dropped us off but I believe they owe their customers more.
