We walked to the patch and it was picked over pretty good. We saw bunch of guys in the field prior to opening to the public and perhaps picked them over pretty good. We stopped by the stand and they had massive strawberries!! We managed to fill our containers (none close to that quality) after awhile but seemed like every 3-4 plants one had a good medium size strawberry, most were tiny with a few rotten bigger ones and eaten/fungus mixed in. Got home and tried a few 'good' ones and they were very watery , not very flavorful. Prices were more than expected (internet research) and for the not so good quality of berries. First time strawberry picking, it looked like decent little farm just wish the berries were better and more plentiful. The ladies were nice. Might try another berry patch next time closer to home.

I did not want to miss out on the donuts again so we made sure to visit early on Saturday. We were lucky to get a spot in the parking lot. The two lots fill up quickly and some patrons had to park far down along the road. As it's October and everyone wants to experience the wonderful fall offerings Schutt's has available be prepared for a busy environment with people everywhere. Despite the crowds Schutt's staff does an amazing job keeping the store stocked and lines moving. As the weather is unseasonably warm, we didn't want to do U Pick apples so we went into the store to select a few varieties. As I walked up to the honeycrisp bin, an employee started bringing out additional apples. The apples were huge and looked perfect! Honeycrisp were considered premium apples at $2.99 a lb. They also offer a large selection of non-premium at $1.99 a lb. Be sure to try the cider sample of the day (honeycrisp) and grab a bottle from the cooler to go with your donuts! We ordered donuts and sat outside to eat them. Be aware seating is limited. The glazed donuts were not very well glazed, only getting a taste of glaze as we ate towards the middle. Otherwise everything was great and it made for a fun outing. Apples, cider, and 6 donuts cost us a little over $20 which is a great value for the quality of the offerings! While we didn't do U Pick, we did walk across the road to check out the photo opportunities available. There are several cute displays to get in some fun fall photos.

You can either pick your own strawberries or buy some that are already picked, which is what we did. They also sell their own jams, local pickles, and other goodies. We couldn't resist trying the strawberry shortcake, and oh my, a true taste of summer on the Summer Solstice! The biscuits are homemade right there on the farm (yes, I bought some to take home), and everything was absolutely scrumptious. Just a heads up, if you're paying by credit card, there's a $15 minimum. And if you're going to pick your own, bring cash or a check. Honestly being cash...unless you are coming to buy pre picked flats of fruit.. They also grow blueberries, raspberries, sweet cherries, and peaches when in season, so we'll definitely be back! It's about a 30-minute drive from Rochester, through beautiful farmland and lovely homes. I even heard the bells of a nearby church it added the perfect touch to the whole experience. I love the fresh produce and Amazing Grains. The cronuts (sp) are just delicious. I was so bumed when the lettuce farmers were not there this year. I always got my leaf lettuce there. But there is another gentleman raising and selling lettuce since the other has gone. I am trying to find his name as I would like to get in contact with him. He had the stall on the corner of the first isle in from the side street. If you have his name and a phone number I would love to have it. The market is not huge but that is what I like about it. Quite a few of the vendors have a small selection of sub par quality veggies and are literally selling stuff out of the trunk of their car. Why buy questionable stuff here when the public market downtown also runs on Saturday and has longer hours with better stuff? My advice is to skip the Fairport Market and go spend your money somewhere else.

The CSA features produce from local farms, many are organic too. They break it out in seasons and now offering year-round options. For the spring share, I paid in full to reserve a weekly share with pick up at Three Heads Brewing - $64 for 4 weeks ($16 per week). They have several other pick up locations, days, times, and even delivery. I opted for the small share, which is good for 1-2 people for a week. So far I've enjoyed making recipes with a few ingredients I've never worked with before like green garlic, rhubarb, beets, etc. That's the most enjoyable part for me - the challenge of cooking with something new and going outside my comfort zone in the kitchen with new veggies and getting creative. In their weekly emails, they'll break down what types of veggies you'll be getting that week as well as recipes they've compiled on Pinterest, which is handy! In addition to the veggie shares, they have several other options you can add one, including eggs, meats (chicken, beef, pork, duck), fruits, veggie burgers, bread, yogurt, and coffee (they partner with Fuego and Joe Bean). I haven't opted in for any of these yet, but am intrigued and may consider it down the road to try more local meats, eggs, etc.

The price is well worth what you get. They have a number of pick up locations that service the Rochester area, and a variety of private and open-to-public pre-box drop off sites. I think it's a great opportunity to really support local growers, and I'm excited that the food is coming to me for the next few weeks.
