Dr. Loomis is one of the best primary care doctors I've ever had in my 49 years on this planet. He really makes the effort to ensure your health is as good as possible and to address all of your questions. The office staff are very responsive over the phone/email and in person and helpful too. Dr. Loomis spent a full hour with me during my first visit (the initial visit being a video call according to their pandemic procedures), more than the allotted 45 minutes! (Maybe it's because I already knew him from his public appearances and had a lot to chat with him about, as well as a lot of health questions.) He definitely knows a lot about nutrition (this being a specialty of Barnard Medical Center), but is knowledgeable about medical issues all around as well. He helped diagnose a significant vitamin D deficiency in me and prescribed a supplement. He also referred me to specialists for other issues. My second visit was an in-person physical exam, and again, he went above and beyond the typical standard for physicals. I'm so lucky to live in the DC area! read more

Ever since COVID, the only way to get an appointment fairly quickly, is via Telehealth. November 2024, I was very, very ill, and they would only see me in person 4 months later! In the meantime, they instructed me to go to Urgent Care or the ER! Several other times, owing to minor issues such as ear infections and conjunctivitis, they insisted I do a Telehealth appointment or otherwise, go to Urgent Care or the ER. Further, annual physicals have not been comprehensive. Moreover, for my first physical with Barnard Medical, they assigned a medical student to conduct it, in its entirety (w/o any other doctors present). In addition, this was despite the fact that I had requested, in writing in my medical records, that I did not agree to be seen by medical students. It appears as if the doctors rarely even come into the office! The lovely Nurse Practitioner, Kristine, is the gem that seems to hold the office together! She shows both care and concern, and although there is a lag time to see her, too, at least you can get an appointment with her in person (eventually). read more

If this was only a review of Dr. Loomis easily 5-stars. They say that a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link...sadly he depends on a few weak links to interact with patients. At the end of our visit, she reviewed everything we had discussed and the follow-up appointments I would be making for routine screening and lab work. RUN AWAY!! Seriously the WORST medical group I ever dealt with. I love Dr. Barnard's books, and thought it would be amazing to get support from doctors who also believe in the power of plant-based nutrition. Since they now accept patients out of state via telehealth, I was excited to give them a try since I live in CA. Worst decision I ever made. They never answer phone calls, and have to do everything by email. Just to make an appointment took 5+ emails back and forth. So frustrating. which takes forever to get anything done. When I needed a referral, I had to follow-up and get a copy. They never sent it to me automatically. Then, when the bill comes in they coded it wrong, so I have to pay out of pocket instead of it being covered. They won't fix it and now telling me annual visits can only be done in person. Then why did they book the appointment virtually in the first place? I told them I wanted to do my annual ;( Horrible communication and service. I feel so scammed to have done 2 appointments (follow-up of the lab results) that aren't covered. I still haven't gotten a phone call from them to get this resolved. Maybe in-person might be better, but what's the point if a business never answers their phone or calls you back. I didn't want to believe the other horrible reviews because I really wanted a plant-based doctor, but it really isn't worth the time and headache. read more

Barnard Medical Center has many of the qualities a Washington, DC-area consumer would want from a primary care practice: qualified doctors; a diverse staff; and a convenient location. What they also have is a support staff that tries to make decisions about patient care that only a physician should make and that seem unhappy with their roles. In addition, constructive criticism is not received well, unless it's made by patients who are either affluent, white or both, even though everyone's money is the same color. In a city with many primary care options to choose from, this seems to be a model for increased internal dysfunction, rather than a healthy long-term business model. The staff who are deliberately rude and try to second guess the physicians' specific instructions on facilitating patient care are undermining the practice's stated goals. Why would anyone who is mean and unmotivated want to work in health care, when they clearly lack the necessary skill sets and the ethics to conduct themselves properly? No one expects perfection, just basic decency, respect and good-faith efforts on every patient's behalf, regardless of who the patient is. read more

The doctors are sufficient, but the office does not know how to work with insurance companies. They have been relentlessly pursuing payment on a small bill that was paid months ago. I supplied a receipt from my insurance company along with evidence that it was deducted from my HSA. I get calls, emails, letters and texts about paying a bill that my insurance company and account says is PAID. I've called a dozen times and Barnard claims they never received the payment and that I should contact Aetna and have them resend it. I contact Aetna and they say it's paid/cashed so the hassling continues indefinitely. I'm dropping the doctor as it's not worth the stress. Update: I had my insurance company call the Barnard Medical Center. Bernard lost the check so rather than ask the insurance company to reissue a check, they opted to relentlessly pursue me to pay the bill AGAIN. read more

I tried to stay with Barnard. I took off work for appointments and followed through with referrals to specialists. They always seemed to want other student doctors to sit in on my appointments. It was superficial and I always had to push for answers but I hung on. My doctor looked stressed out and I fequently could not get appointments with her, but I held on. My breaking point came when, after following up on a referral, I arranged a zoom with my doctor and she kept insisting I CHOOSE to be cared for by her or the Cardiologist - WHAT? Isnt she my primary? Dont primariy doctors coordinate global care? Go somewhere with more staff and layers of expertise, my friends. read more

I changed doctors because I was unhappy with the service, front desk and physicians assistants. In over a year of being a patient here, I never saw a doctor. I never felt they knew what to do. Today, I was charged $42 to receive my records and to have them faxed. This is ridiculous and I am happy not to be involved with this office again. So far, so good. Had my first appointment with Dr Sardana today. We came up with a plan. She cares about her patients and believes in empowering them. I also see a naturopath and an acupuncturist, and she is very supportive of this. It's a long drive for me (Baltimore) but it is worth it. I believe in the values and mission of this medical center. I am so pleased to live in this area so that I can have access to this fantastic medical practice. As a vegan who has experienced amazing health benefits from following a whole-foods, plant-based diet, I wanted to see medical clinicians who have the same idea of how to achieve good health as I do. So I left my previous physician (who had begun actively promoting the keto diet on every bulletin board in that office) and switched to Barnard Medical Center. I have been very happy with the professionalism and thoroughness of the staff members at Barnard, who have suggested some very informative tests (such as calcium score) that no other physician had recommended to me. After reading some of the bad reviews, I had to post this. I am shocked to hear about the mistreatment some of these patients said they experienced. I am neither white or affluent. In fact my experience has been beyond any expectation. I don't have a lot of trust in our healthcare system , where most of the doctors are basically glorified pharmaceutical reps. Have you ever heard of anyone with diabetes reverse their illness with medication? I haven't. Misinformation and greed is at it's highest. I would rather have someone try to help me actually reverse my disease in the most healthiest way possible, not just end up with more side effects that need more medication. So maybe you had a bad experience while waiting to be seen by the the compassionate, caring doctors. We are all humans and have bad days. Dr. Loomis has helped me reverse my fatty liver disease and my A-1C back in normal range without any harsh drugs that most physicians readily prescribe. Dr. Rahman has given me so much information which other doctors never gave me about my thyroid. Even the billing department showed compassion when there was a billing issue. The list goes on. During this time of COVID, I have been skeptical of tele-medicine but I was very impressed by the entire staff at Barnard Medical Center. Their tele-medicine platform was very easy to use and Dr. Sardana was very skilled at video conferencing (ie. Not everyone is. I wasn't talking to her forehead). I came in with my mom today and it was such a fabulous experience. The nurse who saw us was very thoughtful, kind and thorough. Rare to find! I've been looking forward to the opening of this groundbreaking medical practice for the better part of a year. Today, I had my first appointment for a wellness exam as a new patient. I was impressed with the facilities as well as the staff; they were very friendly and warm, yet professional. It is a modern and clean facility. They had me fill out my new patient forms electronically via iPad. Dr. Neabore had a very pleasant demeanor and I look forward to a long future under his care. Before leaving, I even had the great pleasure of meeting Dr. Barnard himself - an unexpected highlight! Those of us in the DC area are lucky to have this facility. Although you may only want to see an RD, they force you to go through the doctors first... Adding another $200-$355 to your bill when you already know you only want the referral to the RD and already have a primary care doctor. This was not clear on the website. That said, I made both appointments and was not really impressed with the consultations I received. Essentially my medical history was not taken into account during the session and specific concerns. It seems that both the NP and RD I saw only knew what was in the brochure that they share during the appoint, and largely read through that. I did not get any new information/support that I could not have gotten from a Google search. read more

I was excited when I moved to D.C. about going to Barnard Medical Center, but my experience has not been positive. They dumped referrals on me for every minor symptom (I got 4-5 referrals after just two visits), even after I was clear that I could not afford to see expensive specialists. If you have any mental health conditions they also will not refill your prescriptions. I was not impressed with the service that I received. I felt that the doctor spent more time trying to push veganism (that is not to say I don't appreciate the benefits of a plant-based diet), but I felt she focused more on that than really listening to my concerns. I recently moved to DC and needed to find a new PC. Barnard Medical center was great. They scheduled me in very quickly. I got an appointment within the same week. The front desk staff was super helpful and professional. I saw Nurse practitioner and she was really great. She answered all my questions very thoroughly. She even offered me free classes to go to that the center offers for their patients. Never have I ever seen a practice where the doctors cared so much about your health. I felt like everyone cared about my well being and was there to help me. What practice has free classes for patients?? Like amazing!!! They even had fresh fruits for patients to have while they wait. I went to Barnard Medical Center for an routine check-up a few months back and was thoroughly impressed! I was called back right on time for my scheduled appointment and Dr. Eakin was so kind! I suffer from PCOS and she made some recommendations on how to alleviate the symptoms PCOS can cause, explained each of the tests my blood would be run through and the purpose of the tests and was just overall extremely friendly and genuinely interested in my health and well-being. The patient portal allowed me to easily review my test results, which was super convenient. I will continue to go to BMC for my annuals and any other health issues that my arise. read more

It is unfortunate that I was referred to this clinic as I was interested in an intelligent and productive conversation about diet. I expressed this when I made my appointment and I was mislead into believing that is what I would get. Nope. This practice is exclusively for individuals interested in a plant based diet. Your appointment is not a discussion of your specific health needs but a long winded automated lecture about their belief that a plant based diet is appropriate for everyone. Having done a plant based diet and loving it, but discovering that it is NOT good for my health issues (it made them worse) it is not an option. This was completely ignored and talked over. Actually I was dismissed as though I didn't know what I was talking about. I do. I know my body which has always worked in very weird ways. It was not only a waste of time, it was frustrating and annoying. Some rather outrageous, facile, ill informed statements were made about my current diet that were designed to scare me. I am not that stupid. Human beings are complex and need individualized care. You will not get individualized care here. Instead you will be talked over, ignored, and pushed into what they believe is best for you. YOU know what is best for you. Do your research and listen to your internal voice. Do not allow anyone here to convince you to follow a diet that may not work for you. I am saying this as someone who would love to follow a plant based diet, but it does not work for me. If you are interested in a plant diet and it works for your body - by all means, this is a practice for you. read more
