I had no idea that SAACC existed…read moreuntil I did research on organizations that support the NH/Seacoast African American population and I came across it on Google. It is tucked into the same building as Discover Portsmouth so it is easy to miss but 100% worth the visit. Their current exhibition displays photos taken by President Barack Obama's presidential photographer, Pete Souza, over the course of Obama's eight years as president. The exhibition is beautifully curated and moving. SAACC also does a commendable job of highlighting figures in the local African American community through a permanent photo display and the books and additional materials that they have for sale. I will be telling everyone I know in the area to stop by for a visit!

Came to this farm for their third year of hosting a Lavender Festival. We secured a ticket that…read moreguaranteed parking and admission for our carload of people. (Some issues with overselling and more people than expected did occur). Thankfully we showed up right around open and after a little while of waiting we got to park and experience the festival and farm. Once you got to the festival you first come across a makers market with a good amount of lavender items but such a huge variety of other goods! They had some extremely talented makers and everyone we chatted with was so friendly. The farm itself was offering a good variety of lavender based beverages and goods. My wife and I grabbed lavender iced coffees. They were okay but I do think the lavender ice tea or lemonade would have been a better option. They also had live music, a sheep shearing presentation that seemed very popular. Besides that stuff they had some pick your own lavender, face painting and other activities for kids, a food truck, and what the farm described as a "Lavyrinth" which was a triple spiral labyrinth of lavender. Cool little maze-like winding path and good for photos. Great weather for a day celebrating lavender and supporting a local farm! According to the information pamphlet we got they started this farm back in 2022 and they have planted over 6k Christmas trees and 1,200 lavender plants as well as kept a flock of sheep. They also mention the Christmas trees aren't available yet but a spot to look into future wise. Beautiful location and would recommend checking out the festival next year.

Zambezi just opened a few days ago and they primarily have really interesting stone sculptures for…read moresale. The pieces are all very well done and not inexpensive. As the name suggests, there's a fairly strong African theme to the merchandise, with many sculptures of animals and people. It's very cool stuff, but I wouldn't know where to put any of it in my home. Zambezi is located in the former location of Gus & Ruby, and hopefully this location will bring as much good luck to this store as it did to its previous tenants. The store is still waiting for the city's okay to put up a sign but oddly, that's not unusual in Portsmouth. Good luck and welcome to Portsmouth, Zambezi!

Had a good time Saturday at the Hampton beach seafood festival…read more The beer tent was adjacent to one stage and all the cans were 16 oz. for $6 which isn't ridiculous for an event like this. There were 3x more "stuff" vendors than food vendors (always love to see more food vendors). Huge advantage to an event like this is the ability to hit multiple vendors for a snack. We tried out the clam chowder from Rye Harbor Lobster pound, a fried clam basket from another vendor and oysters on the half shell from another vendor (and sampled a beer or two). If you go, I'd suggest you arrive early. By the time we left the food lines were getting pretty long and it was getting hot. Bands were loud and decent, stopped by the food demonstration and it was underwhelming. Good time - will make plans to go again.

Wristbands were conveniently offered for sale (cash only) at our parking lot (no line!) so we paid up before boarding for our quick 10 min ride to the beach. Each bus route was conveniently marked with a letter. ATMs were available, while some vendors would also accept credit cards. Both portapotties and real bathrooms with running water (and longer lines) were available. Having arrived past lunch time, with empty stomachs, we hit the two food tents first. I had done my reconnaissance, so I made a beeline to Rye's with their 4.5 star rating on Yelp, and their fluffy chowder. On the way, I spied a tempting pile of onion rings pass by, but before I could discover the source, a friend had hit upon 1.5 star La Spiaggia and returned with a huge blooming onion which we tore into and which easily satisfied the hankering for fried onion of some sort. Seafood stew at Old Salt was well reviewed by another, but there was only so much a stomach could handle. The chowder at the cooking demo tent called out to us, but they ran out before the back rows had the chance to troop through. So we settled in a spot in the middle rows to await the next and final demo, by Community Oven. In the meantime, I had a fun moment when I realized the name of the preceding chef sounded familiar and had a lightbulb moment when I made the connection to the recent steak cooking competition I had attended - yes, Justin Rexroad was indeed a contestant! Basically, the price of admission was for the food samples I tasted from the chef demo, including some yummy soft homemade marshmallows, and a few freebies and samples from other vendors and businesses that had set up shop along the boulevard, as many of the restaurants participating in the festival already had storefronts alongside the road. There was also live music entertainment at the stage lined with rows of seating before it. We had a good time, though we decided to avoid the mass exodus by departing prior to the scheduled fireworks on Saturday.
