We had the middle row about ten rows back, wish the seats floors would have been more angled to raise you higher then the person above. As another reviewer mentioned before, the UK production leaves room for a lot of improvement. After seeing the Broadway production and the Mexican production, I can only say this one comes very short. Actors fare OK, but singing is definitely not their strength. And for such a monumental musical that Wicked is, and the standard that's been set by Broadway's production, this one just comes out being mediocre. If you've got the opportunity, choose Broadway's production. read more

A really good production telling the alternative story of the Wicked Witch from the Wizard Of Oz. The cast has apparently changed quite a bit since the show has had residency in Victoria but the current cast are excellent. Some of the Mariah-esque notes they hit are unbelievable! I won't give any spoilers away, so you I'll keep the review short. The one thing I will say though is that we were sat in the circle and the sound was a bit iffy sometimes. I think they set the levels to accommodate the huge vocals on the big songs, but on the quieter vocals the orchestra drowned them out. Overall a great show, I'd definitely recommend it. read more

This show was so much fun. The costumes - ooh the poufy dresses and whacky coats!! - were incredible. I don't think I saw the same crazy silhouette more than once, even when the entire cast seemed to be on stage, munchkins, witches, extras and all. The lead actresses had amazing voices, and the entire theatre was transformed to be the perfect glittering setting for a night in Oz. Not the mention the storyline is so clever that I was guessing at what new twist would be revealed next. The seats are stacked upwards at somewhat of a steep angle so If you have any feelings of vertigo, it may not be the best venue, but I also think this means the majority of seats have a pretty nice view of the stage no matter where you buy. The seats are also not very big - juuust enough hip width and leg room for me. But on the bright side (since I thought it was too chilly that evening) this means that the theatre feels nicely warm cozy. I did see others who seemed to be almost too hot and fanning themselves - but luckily for them, there were plenty of ice cream vendors strategically located throughout the theater at intermission. Well worth every penny! I have heard amazing things about the play in general, but seeing it live and for the first time in London was pure magic. We were able to eat dinner at Cafe Italian across the street before the show. Thankfully, we got our will call tickets before Cafe Italian (60 min before show) because when we showed up to the theater 20 min before the show, the will call line was pretty long. The actors were fabulous. No weak links. Show runs about 3 hours long. Great show! :) read more

A really enjoyable show! I came here for my birthday and thought the show was very entertaining. Some parts were sad but it was good that there is also some humour in it which made me laugh out loud. A brand-new musical always makes me nervous but Wicked was wonderful! The enchanting story of the green with from the Wizard of Oz with regular appearances of the Wizard of Oz characters gave one a fresh view of this old favourite. An outstanding lead vocal performance carried the flag for what was a good cast with loads of talent in the acting and singing department. The stage work was beautifully done with excellent use of lighting to create effects that underlined the story and were quick and silent in execution. Although I was sitting in the nose-bleed seats, the view was good and the production seemed aware of the need to play for the entire audience. Due to the nature of the play there were lots of families and children, which made the theatre a little rowdy, even for a musical. This could be overlooked though because as the lights went down you were sucked into a magical world. Even though it is still playing out of the Apollo Victoria Theatre, it is definitely worth going to watch. When it takes a step up in the world as it inevitably will, the prices will rocket. read more

Went to the Wednesday afternoon matinee perfomance. Full auditorium, cheering and screaming after pretty much every number. Honestly? I didn't know what to expect, but after the first 20 or so minutes which are a little slow, the show bursts into life and it is non-stop entertainment from there. Two female leads both stunning performances but Rachel Tucker was phenomenal. Ensemble cast are tight, story is clever and the setting effective throughout. Initially I bought tickets to see this show for my daughters 8th birthday. To be honest though, the production was so enjoyable I think I liked it as much if not more than she did. As well as being a fantastic musical there is also quite a lot of honour in here. Some of it more subtle than others. The show is held at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. Even though the theatre was only built in the 1920's I still love being in and looking around places like this. It really is an impressive place. The theatre is literally about one minutes walk from Vitoria Train Station so transport to this show couldn't be easier. read more

As I've never particularyl been a fan od Wizard of Oz I wasn't in a rush to see this show but after good reviews from friends I bought some cheap tickets and went along. I am now hoping to go and see it again very soon. The story is really good at explaining the background to Wizard of Oz. The characters are enchanting and the songs are beautiful. The set is fantastic, if not a little bit scary in places! I would definitely recommend this show, dismiss any misgivings you may have about it and go to see it. I went to see Wicked in November on a Wednesday afternoon. Overall it was very good especially the scenery and costumes. The story of the Witches of Oz is very cleverly done and ties up with the main Wizard of Oz story really well. We had stalls seat which were slightly off to the side so we missed some parts of the action but very few really and it was well worth it for the price reduction compared to the best seats. The Apollo Victoria is a great venue, quite large and very easily accessed from tube, train, coach services at Victoria. read more

I am a musical fanatic. I sing west-end songs in my sleep. Whenever I attend a show, I am always filled with excited anticipation as to what the lifting of the curtains will reveal. Normally, I will know the songs inside out when I see a show. However, with Wicked, I had never heard a song from it before the night of the show. I had very little idea about what it was about. All I knew was that Idina Menzel was in it. The theatre was brimming with excitement. As the curtain went up a fantastic set was revealed, and powerful melodies began to boom their way around the historic walls, captivating all who heard them. The talent of the cast was superb, exactly what you would expect with a West End show. The story was fun and enjoyable - appealing to both children and adults alike. The costumes were as if from another universe. And the whole production made the audience feel as if they had stepped into a magical world, with imagination taking over and bright characters from childhood stories taking the limelight once more. I loved the production so much I bought the CD, and was soon desperate to see it again. My chance arose when a date offered me tickets. Knowing he had a mild allergy to anything performing-arts related, I was a little anxious about what his reaction to a show I had raved about would be. At the interval, I turned to him, expecting the worse. However, I soon knew from the smile on his face that he was enjoy it a lot. He even kept talking about it all the way home! This show is a great one to take children to, but also very enjoyable for the musical fanatic, as well as the musical phobic. I would definitely recommend a trip to this musical - it is money well spent! read more

I love musicals, but am always very sceptical of new additions to the west end family, or new takes on a very well known and well loved story. I thought I would give it a go, as I love the Apollo theatre, and I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised! The costumes, sets and general atmosphere created during the production is magical, and well worth the ticket price alone. I won't give away too much of the story, but it all centres on the good witch and the wicked witch before Dorothy came to Oz. It is a moral tale, but with much humour and some fantastic songs. I bought the soundtrack, and have been singing along ever since. I would be happy to take children and adults alike, and think it is a really great option for theatre in London. read more

On a recent trip to London I noticed that tickets prices were around 1/3 of prices in NYC I figured I'd check Wicked. I was in the 6th row of the stalls to the side and only paid £29.75. My one complaint is that there are no cup holders, not sure if that's normal for the UK but it would be nice to have somewhere to put my drink. The show was great, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The actors were great, I loved the music, and the sets and costumes were amazing. I would highly recommend seeing Wicked. read more

Was bought tickets for my 21st Birthday and I must say it is one of the best theater performances I have ever seen (and I have seen a lot!) Lucy Newton played Glinda in the performance I saw and she was great...as for Rachel Tucker.... just WOW what a breathtaking voice! Everyone was amazing, the company really put everything into the backing singing and dancing and the costumes were incredible! The sets were great, watch out for the giant dragon above the stage! Would definitely go again and would highly recommend!!!! read more

What a waste of almost two hundred pounds. It was so loud yet you couldn`t hear what they were saying. Lots of people had their fingers in their ears. Not many special effects or wow moments. I saw the Wizard Of Oz a few years back at the Palladium & in comparison this was awful. Left so disappointed - all three of us & even this morning I feel really ripped off. Worst customer service ever. We had really good seats in the stall. The 'manager' delayed us from entering because instead of seating us himself he wanted the usher to do that. Then they made us wait outside for 20 mins and see the show on the TV instead of the seats we paid for because we were 1 min late thanks to the manager. read more

We wanted to watch a show for our last day in London, and chose Wicked because the Apollo Victoria Theatre was right next to our hotel (Park Plaza Victoria)...can't beat that! But even if you don't stay here, it is easily accessible as it is right outside the Victoria station. The venue was perfect. Not too big and not too small, and I don't think there's a bad seat in the house. Overall, I'm glad we watched Wicked (for the first time) here, it was an amazing experience. I loved the music so much, I think it was the first time I felt compelled to get the soundtrack after a show. read more

This review will contain spoilers I'm sure, so if you're worried about the plot, stop reading now. For me, Wicked is a bit of a lackluster show. It has some amazing strengths. I think the songs are really well done and creative, and before I saw the show (I've seen it twice now, once on tour in San Francisco, and now in London), I had heard the soundtrack and loved it. So when I got to see it in San Francisco I was really excited, but the show kind of let me down. So when a friend wanted to see it again, and cheaply, I figured I'd give it another go. Maybe I was being too hard on it. I mean I know that the story was a whole lot lighter than the book (and I was okay with that, the book the way it is would probably make a terrible musical) so that wasn't really my problem. So I was being a bit hard on it. This was a much better performance, but the flaws in the show that I saw before were still glaringly obvious to me. Like I mentioned. The songs are good, and a lot of them are really catchy. When Glinda sings Popular, it's really cute and funny, and the comedy is really good. I really do love Dancing Through Life and it's probably my favorite piece of the whole show (for reasons coming up a little bit later). The set is really well done and the costumes are elaborate and really pretty. Unfortunately, it's almost as if whoever decided to choreograph it had been smoking a bunch of weed, and just didn't really care. There's one really well done number with a really good bit of dancing, and that's Dancing Through Life (which you'd really expect given the title of the song), but most of the the dancing in the rest of the show is pretty pathetic really. The majority of the dancing (if you can really call it that), is just the ensemble standing around, walking really slowly, and then suddenly doing a spin or two, then stopping again and standing around. It's really frustrating. When I see a musical, I want three thrings: Great songs, a great plot, and great dancing. When a musical pulls two out of the bag and leaves the third piece of that trinity missing, the whole show really loses out for me. And the second half of the show is even worse. There's ONE number that has really any choreography, and it's back to the whole routine of ensemble stands still and stares at the singer then does a spin or two then stares again. When i see a musical, it's really boring when people sing the song and just stand there and do nothing while singing, and that's practically the entire second half of the show (and a fair bit of the first half). There's a love song that is sung in its entirety by the couple kneeling at the front of the stage with a smoke machine going. Yawnfest. The big number at the end with the two female leads? Half of it is sung standing at the back of the stage. Then halfway through, it's like the choreographer thought they should do something, so they walk about five steps to the front of the stage, and then stop and sing the rest of the song to each other. It's absolutely pathetic. There has to be SOMETHING they could be doing during these songs that isn't just people standing around on the stage. That's my big gripe about the musical which really makes it kind of average in my eyes. That and the ridiculous love plots. How many people's terrible actions are motivated by being in love with someone who doesn't love them back? More than there probably should be. Nessa loves Bok who loves Glinda who loves Fiyero who loves Elphaba. It's a bit excessive. I know I'm in the minority here, so if you go see it you'll probably love it. However, for me, there are far better and more interesting shows you could be seeing in the West End that are the whole package for me, not a show that is lacking a lot of movement. read more

I'm going to say it...i'm not a musical kinda girl. They're just not for me. Unwittingly i was dragged to see Wicked the musical but it proved far more enjoyable than i dared to have hoped. I loved it, i was grasped by Elphaba and Glinda's story. The set and costumes are well thought out and don't even get me started on the songs. I'm still singing 'defying gravity'. If you're in London and short of things to do, i highly recommend seeing a West End show anyway but Wicked is the must! read more

With £15 tickets I wasn't expecting much especially as from the view at our seats it felt like we'd need a telescope to see anything. However I was pleasantly surprised at being able to see and hear every part of the amazing production. What really astounded me about this show was the ability of the production to make it feel like you were part of the story and become completely lost in the moment. Wicked itself is an exceptional show. It's one of my favourite musicals so I may be a little bias but the cast in the November 2014 line up are incredible. Elphaba is one of the best musical theatre singers I've seen on stage. She sheer talent was breathtaking and she deserved the standing ovation. Glinda was also excellent in her role and the two voices complemented each other nicely. It was our last night in London and we decided to go to the Apollo Victoria Theatre to try to get discounted tickets to see Wicked. We went to the theatre on a Thursday morning at 10:10am. I knew that I needed to be there a lot earlier to get a chance at the half price front row seat day tickets. There was a short line with about 3 people. I was surprised that there were actually 2 front row tickets at half price available, but I needed 3 tickets. So I ended up paying full price for 2 tickets at £65 and 1 student ticket at £29.50 for the 2nd row center of the Dress Circle. We had a choice of either 4th row down at the Orchestra section or 2nd row at the Dress Circle, which is the first balcony level. We made the right choice of seats, because up on the the Dress Circle, you're able to see the entire stage and the lighting and effects were fantastic. The show was amazing and the experience to see London theatre as a family was definitely worth the price. The Apollo Victoria Theatre was convenient because it's right outside the Victoria Underground Station. The only complaint is the toilets for the Ladies. There's only four stalls in each of the bathrooms, so there's always a long line, taking 15-20 minutes. A tip would be to know where the toilets are ahead of time, and as soon as intermission starts, head for the toilets straight away. read more

So considering this show has been in London for nearly 7 years now, and I have seen it at least 3 times (clearly not enough) it is beyond me that I haven't managed to review it yet. So here I go.... Wicked is definitely a must see show. The staging, set and cast are spectacular, it is well choreographed, vocally strong and actually an interesting and quite poignant story whether you are a fan of Wizard of Oz or not. If you are you will spot some things in the story that tie in very cleverly. Wicked is based on the book of the same name by Gregory Maguire which is a prequel to the Wizard of Oz tells of how Glinda (she starts the show off a Galinda - quite witty!!) and Elphaba (the green one) become who they are through their developing friendship at University. If you have read the book and liked it, don't expect to see it on stage, many elements that make the book so good are not used or brushed over as smaller plot devices (animal rights, fiyero, oil!!! Book readers know what I'm talking about!!) But it does however relate the age old story of two people from different backgrounds finding friendship in each other but ultimately choosing different paths that will change them both forever. Music and Lyrics by the well established and brilliant Stephen Schwartz, responsible for Godspell and Pippin and wrote lyrics for Enchanted, Pocohantas and Hunchback of Notre Dame to name a few, he writes songs that are fun, moving, memorable and I can tell you, flippin' hard to sing at times. I was lucky enough to see Idina Menzel in London sing Defying Gravity and even she was tired from all that belting top F's!! She was amazing though. Currently in the role of Elphaba is Louise Dearman who I heard sing in West End Live and it was very interesting to hear how the vocals have changed in that the leads seem to have more freedom to ad lib around the tune than before. She also sang with Gina Beck who is playing Glinda at the mo and I didn't think their voices blended very well at all, especially with the British accents that have been enforced now. The stereotypical character that Glinda it (think legally blonde but with magic) does not lend itself to a British accent as it is not a stereotype that we have here. If I was to give any negatives I would have to say I generally skip anything to do with the Wizard when I listen to the soundtrack. His character is very non-chalant and is far too laid back, hasn't quite developed the 'great and powerful Oz' and the facade behind it yet and his songs are a little annoying. And as much as Fiyero is supposed to be a hero and also the love interest, when he is introduced he is a bit of a prat really, very full of himself and flashy, and it takes his friendship with Elphaba for him to realise who he really wants to be. 'As long as You're Mine' is def a highlight though between him and Elphaba. Other negatives very much relate to the changes made from the book and it is such a shame that they decided to have a Hollywood ending than the original one in the book. It just seemed to cheapen it somewhat. But these are very minor compared to the overall experience and like I said, a definite must for any West End fan and a good show to see even if you are unsure of the theatre. Even though I wasn't too familiar with the story I thought it must be good if people call it one of the most popular west end shows. So I went along to find out what it's all about. I knew it's a family-friendly show before I went but I was surprised at how many kids were actually there. My first impression was that I went to a circus rather than a west end show. However as soon as the curtains were opened all was forgiven. The music was amazing, the sets were beautiful, the actors were talented and the story was excellent from start to finish. It was a fun evening out and I'd recommend you to go and see it at least once. read more

Fabulous show! The singing, choreography, and set are just fantastic, and the Apollo is a great venue to see it in. I took a gamble on cheap seats, but I needn't have worried; the construction of the theatre makes it such that you have a really good view almost anywhere you sit. It is an older theatre, so my knees did feel just a bit cramped by the end of the show, but you can stretch during intermission and shake it off. read more

Wicked was an absolutely superb production that returns the wizard of oz to its political commentary roots, this production obviously referencing Bush's America, whereas teh original book dealt with Coolidge and the film with FDR's new deal policies. The set was enormous, the monkey actors incredibly impressive, and the singing great. Don't understand why there had to be a round of applause every five minutes though. read more

A truly genius piece of theatre, and worth a look for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. The music is perfect, and the cast were fantastic. There was a few changes from the original score (they switched octaves or talked-in-song through some of it) but it was STILL a fantastic show. The tech is done fantastically, the costumes, the makeup; it really creates an atmosphere. And the story itself? A new take on The Wizard of Oz from the Wicked Witch of The East's perspective. Watch out for the clever hints of what's going to happen later in the play (brainless/lions/celebrations/water- THATS ALL YOU'RE GETTING!) There were a few mic difficulties, and we ended up with Glinda's understudy, which was a little disappointing as she wasn't as well rehearsed in the songs as I had expected, but these things are unavoidable sometimes. HOWEVER the theatre itself. When you enter it has a really Oz-ian themed foyer, with over-priced gifty/souveniry bits, I tend to steer clear of. If you insist on buying drinks at the interval for a treat, order them at the bar BEFORE the show, and they'll be there waiting for you. I also recommend heading to the ladies prior to the show or right at the start of the interval, the queue was literally all the way down the stairs and 4/5 toilets broke due to the high demand. But on the whole? A truly fantastic night out, worth every penny (especially if you get the 17.50 tickets from last minute.com on a slow night- weekday nights or any matinee but saturday) and you can move straight down a couple of rows as the show starts! read more
