We had so much fun on our tour with Rick. Not only did he have so much knowledge about the area and the horses, he was also just a fun AF tour guide! We laughed so much, saw the most beautiful horses, learned about the horses and Corolla in general, and even saw some bald eagles!! If you're looking for a fun way to tour the beach, definitely book a tour! Plus, this group is actually working on protecting the horses!!! Some of the money from these tours go towards preserving land and caring for the horses (but only if absolutely needed, as we learned! For the most part, the horses are left completely alone unless it's life or death). A couple things for parents with young kids: The car seats fit perfectly, no issues at all. When the guide said this is usually a bucket list item for some people I didn't know what he meant. I just had wanted to see this to see the wild horses running on the beach. Never did I imagine that I'd get to see the horses living/roaming amongst the houses of Corolla Beach. I had no clue a community could exist like this and without going on the tour I never would have believed it. Geoff, our guide, was great and informative. He took us all around to make sure we could see horses. He told us all about how they're cared for and tracked (but not really tracked). It's amazing that there's so much involved to make sure the wild horses are treated well. There's a mutual respect between the horses and people. This is a great tour, a must do if you are in the area. It's educational as your guide will provide a lot of information about the horses, their habits, their incredible intelligence, and how they are being cared for. A point that I would not have thought of - It can get really cold on an otherwise nice day. Plan for 10 to 20 degrees colder than you feel when you are off the shore. Take a jacket and a cap. If there is any way that it might rain, I suggest a good rain coat. Take some water, but remember it's going to be 2 hours till you get to a restroom. read more

A pretty fun way to spend 2 hours and see parts of the Outer Banks that might not normally see, but be prepared to see horses that are wild in the same way deer are wild. I've been coming to the outer banks for more than 20 years and have never seen the wild horses. My kids are now 8 and 5 and we decided to do it this time. We showed up 15 minutes early to take a mildly cold and windy hummer ride up the beach to where the horses are. We've never been up to the part of the beach you can drive onto and that was fun and it was pretty cool to just drive up the beach looking up at the dunes and down at the ocean. It also confirms why I don't think I'd want to stay at any of the beach houses in the areas where people can drive on the beach because I'd constantly worry about th kids (or even me) being run over. Once you get up, there's two neighborhoods of houses and that's where we got to see the "wild" horses and I think that's pretty typical. We saw them basically grazing in people's yards the way you might see deer grazing in a normal suburban neighborhood. It's pretty cool to see wild horses, but I had vaguely expected to see them more in nature than in people's yards. I'm somewhat consoled by the fact that I pretty sure this is mostly because it's the only areas tour trucks are allowed to go. They aren't allowed to go into the reserve where most of the horses are. So, I'll keep thinking that most of the wild horses are more wild more of the time than my sighting makes me believe. Still it's fun to get up to see them and the surroundings are gorgeous. Particularly, the one part where they drove us behind one of the neighborhoods and into a small part of land the company owns that is more natural and beautiful with live oaks and some ponds. Also, there's a bit of a celebrity tour of who owns what houses that can be fun if you're into that sort of thing. read more

The ride on the beach was fun. But horses were scarce and not on the beach at all. Our driver didn't interact with us very much as there was no speaker in the vehicle at all. Would have enjoyed more commentary on the horses and history. One suggestion... driver should keep politics out of his narration. Not appropriate. read more

We did a day trip specifically to do this tour for my birthday. We drove from Virginia Beach, an easy 1.5 hour drive. WHAT is highly organized and their facility and hummer vehicles are top notch! I strongly recommend booking your tour in advance as they sell out pretty quickly!! They had four tours I believe that day different times and at least 3 or 4 hummer vehicles going out at the time slot we chose. The open air hummer vehicle is one of the many reasons you want to choose this company over the other ones. For one, they have bucket seats that are super comfortable and the rows are tiered stadium style making viewing a lot easier! Plus they have a windshield to block the wind and a canopy. In addition, they provide blankets which is a nice touch. Trust me you want bucket seats because you truly are off roading and it gets BUMPY, and blankets because it can get cold and windy. I suggest bringing sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and sand, scarves ( like the accessory ones) to cover your face and a hooded jacket or windbreaker just in case. I wouldn't recommend wearing a baseball cap unless it's super secure on your head. One guy lost his while we were driving. Oh and bring money to tip if you see fit. We had Mike as our tour guide. He made sure we saw horses, Even though it's not guaranteed. They also have radios to call in spotting of horses while out. As long as you keep in mind, that this is not a zoo, but a reserve and that they cannot predict nature nor control it, you'll have a great time! I was a bit worried we wouldn't spot any due to the storm the prior day that possibly caused the horses to hide out. Luckily our driver persevered and we spotted a total of five lone horses, no harems unfortunately and not on the beach. BUT.. I felt blessed to have seen five wild Spanish mustangs at all. We learned the history of how the wild Spanish mustangs arrived in corolla by the Spanish when the graveyard of the Atlantic caused the Spanish to ditch weight off their ships to avoid the shifting shoals. The poor horses were the first to go due to their heavy weight. The native Indians were the ones to help the wild Spanish mustangs thrive on the island because of the great care they provided the horses. No one groomed these horses because the sand helped to file their hooves and the trees and brush groomed their manes and coats and the oats and sea grass and oils from the acorns were natural skin conditioners. These beautiful horses are protected and it is unlawful to feed these horses as they do not eat carrots etc and their digestive systems cannot handle it and they can die. One cannot be within 50 feet of these wonderful creatures. I had such a great time going on a hummer adventure bouncing around through the dunes and driving inland and on the beach. It was so much fun off-roading. However on the beach, it is actually considered a road with a certain low speed limit and a permit is necessary to drive on the beach. Along the way we spotted the old dollar tree owner's home on the beach(he is deceased now). We saw monster truck, grave digger's house, and Larry the tow driver's house. During our search for horses, we saw other tour companies and I must say they looked envious of us! One company was a truck with actual wooden benches on them with backs and no tiered seating. One was a pick up truck with no top and seating facing each other. The best thing also about this tour company is they are highly organized, and they also turn the vehicle around so all sides get a view of the horses! You also learn quite a wealth of information and history. We saw where the old tree line ended with the stumps sticking out of the sand near the water. Driving back along the ocean we saw pods of dolphins frolicking in the water, saw pelicans and sand pipers. We even saw an osprey flying with a fish in his claws. It was quite a display of nature on show!! They do have restrooms in the check in areas, however once you start the tour, you're going to have hold it until you return. With all the bumping and jostling I would recommend using the bathroom prior Otherwise you might be miserable! read more

I am a local to the Outer Banks and this was the first time I have been on a Wild Horse Tour, took my boyfriend bc he has never seen the horses on the beach. We had an AMAZING TIME. Our tour guy Mark was AMAZING also. He was so knowledgeable, funny, and all around just great personality. We took the last tour of the night and it didn't not disappoint. We saw so many horses, the sunset, did some off roaring. Mark even let us get out and take pics of the horses. I would highly recommend doing this tour. What an awesome experience! First of all, you get to ride in these open air hummers and tour the beach, driving by the water and over the sand. Watch out and make sure you wear those sunglasses and maybe bring a scarf, otherwise you may get sand in your eye! The tour guide Mike was knowledgeable and made it clear that his priority was that we had a good time and saw some wild horses! The views and the ride would have been worth the price of admission but seeing the horses was definitely icing on the cake. We ended up seeing 5 lone stallions but no harems. Apparently with the recent storms, the horses go into hiding. But I would definitely come back and do the tour again, maybe the next time my with some out of town family and friends. This place is listed twice here on Yelp. Booked a party of 4 with very little notice for this past Thursday. You need to show up a bit early to sign the electronic waivers, but don't stress about arriving way in advance or lining up outside, as they already have your seats assigned for you, so just be outside for loading. Seats are super comfortable and there is some bouncing, but not a crazy amount. You can use one of their small coolers for drinks and they have ice too, which is a nice touch. Keep in mind, whatever you bring, will be at your feet or on your lap. Our tour guide/driver was Richard and he was super personable, very knowledgeable, and would answer any questions you may have during the ride. They keep in touch with other drivers, so you have a very good chance of finding numerous horses during your trip, but don't expect to get near them or get photos of you and the horses, as they are well protected. Keep in mind, a lot of the two hours is spent driving along the beach, which in itself is a lot of fun. The vehicle is well shaded, which is a huge plus. Have some cash on hand to tip at the end. My husband was even skeptical because of the weather (on and off rain showers all day) but that did not stop us from having an amazing time and there was no shortage of horses! Had a great time on our tour! It was a neat experience and we learned so much from our tour guide, Kelly. She was knowledgeable, friendly, and funny. The tour lasted exactly 2 hours long, which was actually the perfect amount of time. We saw many horses, a foal, a mule, and a little fox. We also got to see the private property owned by the company, which was cool. They take you back through a more secluded area that you won't get on tours with other companies. We were running a little late for the tour as we went to the wrong place (there are quite a few, be careful!) and they were so nice about it and waited for us. From start to finish a great experience. We called with a large group and the office staff was so helpful in getting us booked and directing check in. Our driver Richard was a fantastic tour guide. He explained the history and all the details about how the horses live and stay wild. He was patient and found us a few groups of horses, both on the beach right near the water and further inland in the dune areas - turning around a couple times to ensure people on both sides of the vehicle were able to capture pictures. We had planned to take the Jeep tour but when our plans changed we decided on a Hummer tour instead. Because of the extreme rainfall we took advantage of a discount code that the company offered. While we weren't able to go over the dunes, we were able to see several horses in two different locations by getting out and walking a short distance to where they were. Our tour guide, Aubrey (or Audrey.. sorry!) was great and tried several different spots where she thought horses would be. We learned some interesting facts about the horses, route 12 & the properties we saw. All in all, it was a beautiful ride that our family ages ranging from 2 to 75 thoroughly enjoyed even though the flooding affected the area where the horses are. We were lucky enough to see horses and I feel that the guides really go out of their way to make sure you do, while also being careful to honor the laws and give the horses space. The guides did not enter any areas where it was posted No Trespassing and they gave the horses room to be wild while still letting us get photos. Everything was easy from booking the tour to signing in with the helpful employees who gave us a discount that I didn't even know to ask for. And we all got to sit together. Tom Baker was our guide. He grew up in the OBX, was very knowledgeable and had so many great stories that kept us interested as we drove in search of the horses.
