Our tour guide, Richard, was terrific! The tour is educational and enjoyable. We went out on a 1230 tour in the middle of the week about 16 wild horses. (I suspect you might find more horses active earlier or later in the day, but we were very happy with the number we saw!) We watched one "harem" travel down from the dunes to the beach for some cool ocean breezes! Wild Horse Adventure Tours is very committed to educating visitors about the unique nature of the colonial Spanish Mustangs on the Outer Banks and how to treat them with this respect they need to continue to thrive. They stress the importance of not approaching the horses and not feeding them. These aren't zoo animals -- they are wild animals living on their own terms amid human encroachment. Another GREAT tour with W.H.A.T. Our guide was Rick, a life time local full of great info about OBX. A storm was coming in and the horses were getting to their safe places. We still managed to see some horses, an eagle's nest and some great back roads roads too. We take the tour every year and learn something new every time. Awesome. From start to finish this was an amazing tour. Shorty was our tour master and boy did she show up. We saw about 35 horses plus Shorty put us on 6 of the 9 babies born this year to include one that was only born 5 days ago. What a treat. The babies were fun to watch and boy did they show up and off. From rolling around , jumping and playing to watching the 5 day old trying his/her best to stand next to a parked blue ford bronco while mama was watching. Awesome experience. The driver/guide was great. I'm sure on its best days, you can see wild horses galloping on the beach but the thing you don't know is that they're probably often found near a bunch of houses as well. There are sooo many houses. And they're just building more. Go check out the lighthouses instead and let the horses be. read more

This is a one-of-a kind experience here in Corolla, NC. We booked Wild Horse tours last minute before going back home, and decided to do the 12:30pm. We weren't expecting a lot since the weather was too hot, and horses might be seeking for shade. Ezra (tour guide) made the tour so fun and informative, from sharing history about the wild horses, NC facts and history, and his life experiences. We saw about 12 horses around the neighborhood just chillin . It's also nice to know that these tours contribute to helping the wild horses get their sanctuary, and to preserve their existence. We managed to book a WHAT horse tour on a whim and we are so glad we did! Apparently the wild horse season ended the next day--11/30. Our tour guide Ned (Vehicle: Echo) was very knowledgeable, providing information on Corolla history/sites, local "lore" as well as wild Spanish mustang history. The complementary blankets were a nice touch and came in handy, considering the unseasonably cool temps and super windy weather (dress accordingly!). Driving on the 4x4 is quite the experience and--as Ned advised--there are rules. Spotting horses was a team effort. Drivers are in communication with each other on sightings and passengers are given many opportunities for photos. During our tour, we made around 30 horse sightings (hoof prints came in handy), some consisting of same harems and/or mustangs on the move. Surprisingly, the mustangs did not seem phased by our presence. We managed to see all 3 of the new foals birthed this year. Definitely well worth the money--unless you're staying on the 4x4, I'm not sure you would see horses any other way! Also, please remember to tip your tour guide! read more

We took a tour on April 24. Our guide was Booth. He was informative, attentive to his group and adapted to our request. He made sure the "photographers" in the group had plenty of time for their shots. When I dropped my phone in the sand, he turned around and found it quickly. We saw so many horses(and dolphin's)! We booked this a few days before out trip. We took the last tour of the day in hopes that the cooler temps would bring out more horses. We did see many horses in the little villages that line the beach. The hummer vehicle we rode in seemed to be able to go anywhere without trouble. Cheryl, our guide, was great. She cared about the people in her vehicle. She wanted to make sure we all had an opportunity to see the horses. The weather was great, there were many horses to see, we learned about their history and got some great pictures. Some Notes: * we were asked to sit in the far back because our family seemed like they could get back there with the most ease. That back seat is also bumpy... * the website mentioned that the service has acres that they own allowing the people on the tour to get out and take pictures. It was a great tour, but that stop did not happen. The guide did talk about them owning the land, but it wasn't mentioned that they drive on it. * there are a couple bathrooms at the location where you board - it's a two+ hour tour - so, I'd suggest using them :) read more

A must if you want to see the wild horses in the Corolla area! We have so many pictures and got to see an array of horses: Family groups with foals and stallions and single bachelors on the hunt for trouble. The guides are terrific at finding them. One piece of advice: Wear those seatbelts and sit near the front if you have back issues! The beach can be rough, and riding in a pickup truck can be bumpy. Don't expect to see them on the beach, although our guide told us they do congregate there for a few weeks each year when the flies and bugs get too bad. Where you will find the 110 horses of Chincoteague is when your Humvee takes you in a perpendicular direction up from the beach to jump in behind the dune line into the land of the ostentatious mansions and rental properties that populate the island. The horses can be anywhere, under a house, next to a house, or just standing still in the dunes and forest trails asleep - like the one we saw. We saw two horses during our two-hour tour. They both appeared around halfway during the excursion. There were 13 of us on the 4:00 tour, and three Humvees were needed for all of the 4:00 customers. We had great customer service from Dan who helped us book on the phone, and our guide Bill who was entertaining and informative. PRO TIP After you book, you'll need to fill out a liability waiver (either online or in person). The Wild Horse Tour office and gift shop is upstairs, so don't freak-out if you enter the building and don't see them. Just go upstairs, check in, and congregate downstairs until someone comes down to call off names and get you on board the vehicles. read more

We saw many horses and was amazes to see them near the ocean and dunes. Hearing how they got here, what they eat and was interesting. The ride gets bumpy going through the dunes but fun.
