It didn't take long for things to go downhill at a family owned campground once they sold it to a corporation. Full price on a weekend you know is busy due to Halloween camping but you still close the pool and pull the inflatables from the pond. Knowing that there would be a large group of kids. Oh it was also in the 80s all weekend so there's that too. Now you add on a $15 "lock" fee to reserve your site for the future? Way to bully customers into taking more of their money. This used to be our favorite campground but I guess it's time to find a new one. read more

Can't speak for the camping, but the disc golf course is pretty neglected. For pay to play, it's poorly managed. Really wish they would take the course seriously. read more

I was a little concerned going here after we booked our site...when we read the reviews. We've been camping for a little over a year and have about 14 weeks in total time spent in campgrounds from WI to FL. We are in our early 40's, one small dog, no kids. Reason I'm saying that is to give you an idea of what age group, etc this review is coming from. We loved it here! Our site, neighbors, staff, view, and experience was great!!! We will definitely put this one on our "return to" list. Yes, the cell reception was not great. We were able to place and receive phone calls and that's all we really need...cause we're camping!!! Security was nice, I like that they are out and about...only thing he said to us over the weekend was "Hi" and asked if he could give our dog a treat. Super nice as well!!! Garbage pickup was a great bonus. Some of the best dump stations we've used. Clean place, clean restrooms and if you have kids the lakes were filled with stuff to play on. Absolutely a great time!!! We will be back!!!! Just cause it was listed on here so many times in reviews as a "negative"...I have to reiterate how pleasant and accommodating the staff was!!!! read more

Nice clean well managed campground. Hats off to the bands during special events!! Excellent for families with plenty to do. Not for the loud partying types as there is a curfew. If that's your thing try somewhere else. Owners and staff are friendly and efficient. Spent many weekends there this summer. read more

Karaoke! Good music! Fireside conversation! Laughing! ...if you like any of these things DO NOT camp here as we were "reprimanded" for doing all of the above. Terrible unreasonable management. Quiet time is 11pm. We were playing music at 10pm and got yelled at. One of our "kids" (age 23) got told to get back to the campsite because she was walking around too late at night. We were reprimanded for, and I quote: "I heard...TALKING, I heard...LAUGHTER...you guys started playing music at 8:30am and I let it go, but I've had it!" Police were called and were visibly annoyed at management for making them drive out there to find our group sitting by the fire and quietly talking. Well guilty as charged. We are a large group and have been camping together all over IL and WI for almost 15 years and I've never met more rude and conceited ownership. They need to look in the mirror and ask themselves how they can change for the better. The compound is gorgeous and the campsites are nice and clean. Good facility and amenities. HORRIBLE management. They overmanage the place. They are way more concerned with frivolous rules (sometimes made up on the spot) than they are in customer service. If you want a super quiet time and are ready to go to bed at 9pm, this place would work out for you. We had a group of 63 campers using 12 sites. One quote from a security guard at 10:30 at night: "I heard talking....I heard laughter..." - he was citing things that are unacceptable. So if you like to have a couple beers and have fun, I highly recommend any place other than Wilderness Campground. They clearly did not appreciate the large amount of business our group brought them. read more

We booked a group camp out after our original campground had been flooded. We should have questioned why they had enough space for us with short notice. They were very strict with one tent and 2 adults per paid site even though the sites were very roomy. They did us allow to arrange our group any way we wanted over our sites. On day two the owner approached us and said he walked through our site while we were swimming and said he had counted too many tents. We did not have too many tents, in fact we purchased 2 extra sites for cooking and extra cars. We had extra site that was reserved and we tried to cancel the same day it was booked which they would not refund. He brought us paperwork and insisted we write the name and age of everyone in our party. The owner and security continued to lurk around group all weekend scolding us for music in the day and for people walking to the bathrooms after the 10:00pm site curfew. The sites were nice, the swimming was good, no cell service, weak WiFi, and nothing to do in surrounding area. We won't be back. read more

A campground behind in the times This campground has the potential to be awesome, but falls short. The coin machines for the showers is a sure sign either this camp is either hurting for money or just is run by greedy owners. Based on how busy the weekend was, I'm guessing the latter. Now I'm all about unplugging for the stay, but no WiFi and no cell reception can leave you in a bind. Severe weather cannot be checked on. Tornado warning? Good luck. In my case, looking online for a urgent care or hospital requires driving out of the campgrounds in order to get service. Precious time would be wasted if there is a medical emergency. I did ask about when they would be getting WiFi and they said they have it in the office and most campgrounds do not have it. I have yet to find a campground that doesn't have some service available at the site. I showed the cashier my phone while in the office that no internet would come up using their WiFi. She replied that she doesn't get WiFi on her phone as well. The attitude of most of the staff is irritability. You can check-in online, but that still means a 5 minute search for the paperwork when you arrive because it's not in the system. The majority of the sites are not level so that's a challenge. Wilderness is best to be passed. There are many other terrific campgrounds in the Montello area and staffs that will greet you with a smile. read more

not worth your time - no fun at all We had camped here over fathers day weekend, we had brought our electric golf cart with us,(no where on there website or the information we were given when we checked in did it say NO golf carts were allowed) we were then followed back to our site by the security guard so he could watch us load it back up. the woman at the front desk was absolutely rude about us having our golf cart. i have never been to a place that didn't allow them and we had told them that we wouldn't have come here if this was listed on their website. later on that evening we were all sitting around our fire talking at about 1130pm when the security guard camp back again to shush us as we were all talking, no loud music playing, no shouting nothing, but we were told to be quiet, the site next to us had to go to bed as they were also up past their 'quiet' time. don't waste your time here unless you like having strict rules and no fun. read more

Hard to find in the dark. Need more lighting. Also LOTS of rules & kind of expensive. Would not be my first choice for camping.

I have been coming here for almost my whole life and it is a very fun and family oriented site. The rules are strict, but they are in place to protect the other campers and are easy to follow. My family loves camping here and we look forward to coming every summer. read more

Great campground, for as big as it is still very relaxing. Lots of thing for the kids to do including a playground, large bouncing pillow, pool, beach with a large water playground. Also did movies one night for the kids and a DJ one night by the pool.Will visit again. read more

Just camped there over this past week. Upon arriving front desk was not very pleasant. My niece arrived several days later and she said the same thing about the front desk. Agree with previous review, soooo many rules about every thing!! We had full hook up in an area with no shade, pool was nice but not heated, and no shade at the pool. They also had my reservation wrong and told me it was my fault for not reading my email. Would not refund me for this mistake. Camping here is the same price as a hotel. This place has went downhill. Our family has gone here for over 30 years. The security are Nazis. Speaking with 67 year old mother who said "maybe we should find a new place" and the security guards response was "maybe you should". Really? The lack of professionalism and people skills among this staff blows me away. Each year our family rents out 7-10 sites. People pay to go up there and relax not to constantly be nit picked about everything. To put things In perspective most of the family are 50 years old or older and non drinkers. It's a shame because this place gave us great memories but as of recent that has changed. You can be certain of 2 things ...all of us will be posting a similar review and moving forward we will check out the campgrounds nearby. Its a shame. It's time for them to reevaluate how they treat people and look at their security people who appear to have Napoleon syndrome. read more
