This park is much like Riverfront park with some great improvements…read more The fields are separated, so you need not worry about soccer / Frisbee clashes any longer, each can tourney in peace. The bark dusted playground has the duel play structures but also has swings, and a climbing rock. You'll find the same long smooth sidewalks and a covered pavilion about half the size of Riverfront's but you'll also find tennis and basketball courts here. The splash pad does not just spray up from the ground. It has pipes that mist in all directions and deluge you from above. It is a little bigger and has more fountain points to, so more children can play, and get a little more creative with it. This park really gets all classy with the planning, putting the splash pad in a place that doesn't creep into the shade, making sure there are trees by the playground so parents don't bake and the ace in the hole? That would be the ample parking that is not located a quarter mile from the playground! Get's an A+ from this mom. The one warning I have is that when the soccer games and birthdays fill the park, it brings the 1 lane traffic to a standstill. In that event park across the street at the Fred Meyer's or come back in an hour. It usually clears out fast.

I also love all the flowers up on the hill on the south side. On the northeast side there are SO many little rodents running around. They're fun to watch, but don't feed them, you're not supposed to, and clearly they're doing just fine on their own! There's a creek where you can sit and relax, or even put your chair right in the water on a hot day. There's a tree swing, beautiful old trees everywhere, and always something to explore. I also love stopping into the art barn. It's free and filled with local art, and I try to go through every time they change the exhibit. There are tons of events held here throughout the year, and the park is almost always full of people walking, playing, picnicking, or just enjoying the day. It's one of those places I never really get tired of. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Salem.

We had previously taken our younger 3 kids off the team due to inexperienced coaching, rapid coach turnover, and bad accounting where our bills were regularly wrong so I'm not sure if the refusal to pay was some sort of retaliation. Now we swim at CAT and have none of these issues with better coaching and better facilities.

Back in the mid 60's when it opened as such it was crowded with kids from the time school let out until dinnertime and all day on weekends. Nothing provided shelter except the firepit/picnic structure. So, come the wet weather, one made do as best as one could. The land for park use was bought in 1950. However, I don't know if it was named as Aldrich Park at that early date. I knew my grandfather knew Lewis Aldrich personally but, being a kid, I never asked him what the stipulations were as far as Mr. Aldrich's handing over the land to build the park that I knew and loved. The re-outfitting of the park as I knew it was finished in 1967. And the amenities were impressive. Basketball hoops (still there)/Tennis court (gone). A three-stream fountain shooting onto a big piece of basalt rock to cool us all off in the heat. Gone. Horseshoe courts. Gone. Softball field. Gone. Four-story-tall four-segmented rocket with a radar station opposite it across the sand playground. Gone. Sand playground. Gone--replaced with wood chips. A big concrete structure like a rollercoaster that you could ride your bike, skates or skateboard up and down. Gone. BIG swing set. Gone. Geodesic dome monkey bars structure. Gone. The firepit in the still-extant covered picnic structure was removed in about 1982. I think idiots made it into a fire hazard, so they removed it. Too bad because roasting marshmallows and stuff there was always fun. It was "my park" from 1968-1983 as I lived right across the street from it. By 1978 the demographics of the neighborhood were changing and the constant roar of kids playing there died off. In 2004 a city block of houses and the park were obliterated to make way for the (New) Bush Elementary School. That institution is nowhere NEAR as big or accommodating as its namesake that I attended in the '70's. And it says something about the neighborhood in which it now sits. The neighborhood, like Aldrich Park, is a mere shadow of its former self. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi. So the glory of the world. All things must pass.
