I've worked in vetmed/animal rescue for 30 years so seeing animals well cared for and accustomed to their handlers gave me confidence Darby Farms is a place I can support. Now to the tour itself: Do it. Book it right now. You get SO MUCH for such a reasonable pric. We got two hours of personal interactions, petting and feeding, with over 30 species! Our guide Ryan was incredibly informative and knowledgeable, even taught us hardcore animal nerds some new facts we didn't know. He was skilled at handling even the squirmiest of creatures gently. We love zoos, but this was so much more…read morethan just staring at a bunch of animals behind bars - instead we had multiple opportunities to get up close, touch and feed the animals. In addition, some free range friends walked along with us humans on the tour and literally wanted to eat out of our hands. Our guides, Maddie and Shane, were fantastic! Extremely knowledgeable about the animals, and excellent at making sure everyone in the fairly sizable tour group had an opportunity to see or feed each animal they introduced. We bought the "Kit and Kaboodle" package which was so incredibly worth it! Some zoos allow you a "personal encounter" with one species, or by holding up an animal and letting you pet it,... but in the encounter room, Maddie and Shane spent an hour or more introducing us to at least 10 animals, all different species, in very interactive ways. We held armadillos, hand wrestled a mongoose, let a tiny monkey jump from shoulder to shoulder between us eating Fruit Loops, fed and high-fived otters, and so much more. I truly can't say enough about how happy we are that we included Darby Safari in our first ever trip to Charlotte!

I like both, so I think this tour is awesome. I've done the tours in Carrboro and Charlotte, and both were great! It's fun to try new bars and new beers. The walking is pretty minimal - enough to warm you up if it's cold, but not so much that you'll overheat when it's warm. I've done the tour in a group of 2 and a group of 5, and it was fun both times. The beer pours were very generous, too! The puzzle-solving part of this tour is great because it requires you to pay attention to your surroundings as you walk from bar to bar. They also involve some trivia and wordplay. The mysteries of each tour are different, so I'm looking forward to solving the mysteries in Asheville and Durham next!

The entrance is on the Washington Street side of the building. Make sure to stop at the smaller building outside as that is where you buy your tickets and receive your earbuds. From there you can proceed inside the renovated courthouse and a docent with start the introduction film then explain what order to go through the museum. The Center opened in 2014. I did not know who Earl Scruggs was before my visit. The North Carolina Musicians Mural Trail brought me to Shelby, NC. But he was a well-known banjo player and who had his own style of playing while developing the sounds of bluegrass. Besides Scruggs, the museum tells some of the history of Cleveland County. The Rotunda has the instruments used by the Scruggs family. In These Hills tells Earl Scrugg's story and has some interactive exhibits. There is a board where you can listen to his music and that of other artists. Out of Carolina is the next room and covers the next stage in Scruggs career. The radio history, Shelby Dynasty and textile mills in the area. Turning Road is the last room covers the Civil Rights Movement, textile mills closing, and changing music styles. I recommend a visit to the center if you are near Shelby.

This is a smoothly paved 1.5 mile loop trail that covers the ground where the Battle of Kings Mountain took place on October 7, 1780. Considered by Thomas Jefferson, "The turn of the tide of success" this decisive military battle pitched the Patriot forces, known as the Overmountain Men, against the American loyalist militia that was led by British Major Patric Ferguson. Ferguson was killed in the battle and nearly 700 of the Loyalists were taken prisoner. I would consider this slightly harder than easy as there are some inclines. There are benches and captions and a telephone audio tour along the way, so plenty of opportunities for breaks. The site was designated a National Military Park in 1931 and before that, hosted major commemorative events including a speech by President Herbert Hoovery in 1930. There is a gift shop (of course) with mementoes. They also host a breech-loading rifle demonstration if that's something that interests you. Lots of parking and plenty of shade. Although small in the scope of mountain size, it holds a huge place in the history of the country. Kings Mountain was the site of an important battle in the southern campaign of the Revolutionary War. Although I had only one Revolutionary War ancestor from South Carolina, the campaign is particularly interesting for me. It was brutal with those who fought in South Carolina being loyalists & patriots who were previously friends & neighbors. Such was the case with the Battle of King's Mountain, fought on October 7, 1780. Led by British Major Patrick Ferguson the loyalists outnumbered the patriots who were a group of volunteers called the Overmountain Men. The group mustered in Abingdon, VA and crossed the Appalachian mountains on horse & foot, adding to their ranks by individuals along the way, to the battle site in Western South Carolina. They weren't experienced soldiers. But they knew the mountain ways and weren't at all frightening by Ferguson's threats, In the end it was a decisive patriot victory with Ferguson being killed & buried on the mountain. A large tombstone was erected along the path up what is more of a hill than mountain. Thomas Jefferson called the victory "The turn of the tide of success." On the day I visited it was very hot. My Golden Girl & I quickly went through the Visitor's Center to the path up the mountain. I felt as if I were walking the path of history as we trudged the hilly path to the monument at the top of the hill. We stopped at Ferguson's grave, along with that of another who never made it off the mountains. It was our tribute to the Overmountain Men, who saw the need and left their homes for the uncertain future waiting in the form of Tory militias. We owe them such gratitude for the role they played in achieving our country's independence.

Second: they rescheduled with me a couple times, then confirmed, then tried to reschedule again, but forgot they had already done so and un-rescheduled. Third: THEY WERE A NO-SHOW at the airport! I called them from the airport, emailed the confirmation email back to them. Called them the next day. Emailed again. They have never replied to me ONCE. Fourth: The staff at the airport told me "they have a tendency not to show up... like a lot." And just to take the cake: they sent me a form email THANKING ME for flying with them.
