We love zoos, but this was so much more…read morethan just staring at a bunch of animals behind bars - instead we had multiple opportunities to get up close, touch and feed the animals. In addition, some free range friends walked along with us humans on the tour and literally wanted to eat out of our hands. Our guides, Maddie and Shane, were fantastic! Extremely knowledgeable about the animals, and excellent at making sure everyone in the fairly sizable tour group had an opportunity to see or feed each animal they introduced. We bought the "Kit and Kaboodle" package which was so incredibly worth it! Some zoos allow you a "personal encounter" with one species, or by holding up an animal and letting you pet it,... but in the encounter room, Maddie and Shane spent an hour or more introducing us to at least 10 animals, all different species, in very interactive ways. We held armadillos, hand wrestled a mongoose, let a tiny monkey jump from shoulder to shoulder between us eating Fruit Loops, fed and high-fived otters, and so much more. I truly can't say enough about how happy we are that we included Darby Safari in our first ever trip to Charlotte!

Experience: I took my husband to the safari to do a Capybara encounter for his birthday, but it ended up being so much more. We were able to learn about and pet farm animals, zebras, monkeys, lemurs, camels, kangaroos, fennec foxes, otters, and so many other beautiful rescue animals. They were all well taken care of and in good spirits. The experience was $25 per person and $25 extra per person to sit and have an encounter in the Capybara's environment. They were so sweet and kept jumping on us to snack on veggies. I can't wait to go back, I want to do all the encounters they have! Everyone in Charlotte needs to visit the farm and safari, it is a great experience.

I like both, so I think this tour is awesome. I've done the tours in Carrboro and Charlotte, and both were great! It's fun to try new bars and new beers. The walking is pretty minimal - enough to warm you up if it's cold, but not so much that you'll overheat when it's warm. I've done the tour in a group of 2 and a group of 5, and it was fun both times. The beer pours were very generous, too! The puzzle-solving part of this tour is great because it requires you to pay attention to your surroundings as you walk from bar to bar. They also involve some trivia and wordplay. The mysteries of each tour are different, so I'm looking forward to solving the mysteries in Asheville and Durham next!

The Earl Scruggs Center is located in Downtown Shelby in the 1907 built Cleveland County…read moreCourthouse. Free parking is available on the street. The entrance is on the Washington Street side of the building. Make sure to stop at the smaller building outside as that is where you buy your tickets and receive your earbuds. From there you can proceed inside the renovated courthouse and a docent with start the introduction film then explain what order to go through the museum. The Center opened in 2014. I did not know who Earl Scruggs was before my visit. The North Carolina Musicians Mural Trail brought me to Shelby, NC. But he was a well-known banjo player and who had his own style of playing while developing the sounds of bluegrass. Besides Scruggs, the museum tells some of the history of Cleveland County. The Rotunda has the instruments used by the Scruggs family. In These Hills tells Earl Scrugg's story and has some interactive exhibits. There is a board where you can listen to his music and that of other artists. Out of Carolina is the next room and covers the next stage in Scruggs career. The radio history, Shelby Dynasty and textile mills in the area. Turning Road is the last room covers the Civil Rights Movement, textile mills closing, and changing music styles. I recommend a visit to the center if you are near Shelby.

This is a smoothly paved 1.5 mile loop trail that covers the ground where the Battle of Kings Mountain took place on October 7, 1780. Considered by Thomas Jefferson, "The turn of the tide of success" this decisive military battle pitched the Patriot forces, known as the Overmountain Men, against the American loyalist militia that was led by British Major Patric Ferguson. Ferguson was killed in the battle and nearly 700 of the Loyalists were taken prisoner. I would consider this slightly harder than easy as there are some inclines. There are benches and captions and a telephone audio tour along the way, so plenty of opportunities for breaks. The site was designated a National Military Park in 1931 and before that, hosted major commemorative events including a speech by President Herbert Hoovery in 1930. There is a gift shop (of course) with mementoes. They also host a breech-loading rifle demonstration if that's something that interests you. Lots of parking and plenty of shade. Second: they rescheduled with me a couple times, then confirmed, then tried to reschedule again, but forgot they had already done so and un-rescheduled. Third: THEY WERE A NO-SHOW at the airport! I called them from the airport, emailed the confirmation email back to them. Called them the next day. Emailed again. They have never replied to me ONCE. Fourth: The staff at the airport told me "they have a tendency not to show up... like a lot." And just to take the cake: they sent me a form email THANKING ME for flying with them.
