The last time I called to make an appointment, I was hung up on by a woman named Helen who was apparently insulted because I wanted one of the other barbers to cut my hair instead of her, because i wasn't real happy with the haircut she had previously given me (although I didn't tell her that). I've been going to the William Byrd for years because it use to be really good, but as is the current trend in Richmond, the old timers have retired or died off, and it's a different crew, now. I give it four stars because the few other barbers still there do acceptable work, and the place was so good for many years, but hanging the phone up in a regular customer's face is unacceptable, for ANY reason. This review is for a barber shop. It's not a barber shop that serves local craft beer or plays Mumford & Sons as its background soundtrack. It's a shop that is simple and gives an outstanding haircut. Granted, with my follicly-challenged head, I might put hair professionals in a quandary when I walk in: "Does he realize he doesn't have much hair? Should I offer to shave it smooth? Is this a ocmb-over?" All very good questions, with no certain answer, but I do like a skilled barber, who doesn't just ask what attachment number, asks what I'm looking for and completes the job on top while also offering a friendly conversation. Two visits, two good cuts by confident hands, with a warm foam neck shave, hot towel treatment and my choice of lollipop or bubble gum as I exit. I'm not sure I could ask for more. read more

I am sure that once the John Marshall Hotel is finished and this barber shop moves back across the street it will be a far nicer place to visit. The staff is friendly and listening to the banter back and forth had me chuckling to myself a few times. They have been in temporary digs for 2 years and were once located in the Hotel John Marshall itself. My 16 dollar haircut, while not setting the world of high fashion or haute couture on fire, was better than anything Super Cuts has ever done and the wait was minimal. You do get a warm towel on your face and a razor cut on your neck for your money. I still favor the $12 haircuts at Adam's Barber shop but my boys are getting on in age and sometimes their old peepers might not focus as well as they once did. I do prefer the atmosphere at Adam's over William Bryd, at least for now. We will see what the new shop will bring when the renovations are done across the street. Friendly, efficient and a chance to pick up some good local gossip....I am in! read more

As close to an old fashioned mens barbershop as I can find. I must confess though, I wish I the barbers were actually men. All but one barber there are women. Do not get me wrong, the ladies do a fine job cutting hair and the shop has a great atmosphere. They do cut hair "old school" complete with hot towels and straight razors to trim up. There is just none of the conversation which male barbers would engage in naturally. read more

Greg give me lots of valuable advice about shampoos and conditioners that her best to use for my hair type. He also gave me advice on how to color my hair and which colors to use and the services he could offer in order to accomplish those goals. He gave me the Groupon deal for my haircut, shampoo, conditioner, and blow dry. My haircut was nothing too fancy, just a trim and layers but it turned out nicely. Both him and his wife were kind and honest from my entire haircut. I'll for sure be coming back to this gentleman. read more
