Great Dentist, Terrible Management…read more I have been a patient of Dr. Mark Hewlett for over 10 years. His clinical work is excellent and has never been the issue. This review is entirely about the office management and the corporate culture that came with Ginger Creek Dental's acquisition of this practice. On 04/11/2025, I was scheduled for a crown procedure. The office told me my insurance had been verified with UnitedHealthcare and instructed me to pay my patient portion, which I did in good faith. A temporary crown was placed. What the office failed to do, and was contractually obligated to do as an in-network provider, was verify my actual eligibility and inform me that my plan was under a waiting period. They did not tell me. They went ahead and did the work anyway. When I returned to have the permanent crown seated, I drove over an hour and missed work. Upon arrival, with zero prior notice, office manager Deanna informed me my insurance would not cover the procedure and demanded $1,257 on the spot. I was turned away with no options, no accountability, and no acknowledgment that the office caused this by failing to verify coverage. A temporary crown lasts only a few weeks. Withholding the permanent crown over a billing dispute their office created left me at risk of leakage, fracture, tooth movement, and infection. This approaches what the ADA defines as patient abandonment, discontinuing treatment without adequate notice or opportunity to obtain care. If harm had resulted, this could have risen to a malpractice claim, and the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation takes these matters seriously. Deanna's handling was dismissive and unprofessional throughout. She pressured me to immediately schedule the crown after X-rays, directly contradicting Dr. Hewlett's own assessment that the tooth was healthy and not urgent. She failed to verify my insurance, turned me away without notice, and never accepted responsibility. When I raised concerns about the Ginger Creek transition, her response was "there's a reason Ginger Creek acquired this office." After I submitted a stamped formal complaint by mail (since Dr. Hewlett was not being notified of my emails) and initiated a dispute with UnitedHealthcare, the office agreed to a 65% discount on the outstanding balance. However, when I requested written acknowledgment from Deanna that she bore responsibility for the verification failure, she did not deliver, directly resulting in this review. They quietly reduced the bill but refused to put accountability in writing, which also raises concerns under the Illinois Insurance Code's Unfair and Deceptive Acts and Practices Act regarding misleading billing practices and misrepresenting coverage status. Dr. Hewlett is a talented dentist, but since Ginger Creek Dental took over, this office runs on a corporate-first model where the front desk will schedule your appointment, skip their insurance due diligence, and refuse to complete treatment unless you pay in full on the spot, even when the problem is entirely their fault. If you consider this office, verify your own insurance independently. Do not rely on them to do it.

Have to say, avoid this provider! My daughter was sent here on referral from her dentist (separate…read moreissue) to have wisdom teeth removed. Sloppy removal, failed to prescribe antibiotics after surgery, on return visit due to infection denied they hadn't forgotten to prescribe antibiotics, then admitted their error, denied my wife access to daughter when she was sitting in waiting room and texting and calling my wife requesting assistance dealing with facility medical personnel... it goes on. Then the insurance billing team sent claims to the wrong company despite having photocopies of correct insurance cards. Follow-up a couple months later and reprovidkng correct info... they resubmitted to the wrong insurance companies. Here we are almost a year later and they haven't yet submitted to the correct companies, don't return phone calls in a timely manner ... So, AVOID this provider.

I had an experience here that raises concerns about their billing and scheduling practices…read more About 24 hours before my appointment, I received a text stating that if I did not confirm the appointment, it would be cancelled and I would be charged a $75 fee. This was surprising because their stated policy is a 48-hour cancellation window. For additional context, I had previously declined to sign their policy regarding fees. I did not confirm via text--but I did show up on time for my appointment and received services as scheduled. Despite that, the office communicated that failure to confirm could result in cancellation and a fee, which does not align with their stated policy and doesn't make sense given that the appointment was ultimately kept and used. This creates an uncomfortable situation as a patient: Policies appear inconsistent (24-hour confirmation vs. 48-hour cancellation) Fees are referenced even when no appointment is missed Expectations are not clearly agreed to The clinical care itself was fine, but the administrative and billing approach makes it hard to trust the process. I would not recommend anyone visit this office.
