Dr. Parker was recommended to me by a Yale educated, brilliant friend who has been through many health scares. If it were not for women telling their healthcare stories I would not have found him. My friend's fibroids had been removed by Dr. Parker years prior, her scars were invisible, and she was thrilled with her treatment, insisting that I call and speak with him. Dr. Parker replied to my email immediately (during the holidays and a pandemic) and we set up a teledoc appointment. Dr. Parker was knowledgeable, friendly, warm, patient, and interested in my condition and optimistic about possible treatments. He took time to answer 100% of my questions, never rushed, and taught me everything about fibroids I needed to know including why they exist and how they form and grow. He's clearly an academic, a pioneer, and medical expert on the subject, and fortunately a teacher by nature. He did not try to sell his services, happy to refer doctors in my area whom he had trained and supervised, though I chose to do my surgery with him. He had knowledge beyond what you will find in any internet search about the fibroids and gynecological issues, explaining every possible treatment for fibroids, how they work and the eligibility and statistical outcomes of available treatments. He reviewed my MRI images and showed me exactly what my gynecologist apparently had never looked at that proved I was not a cancer risk. He identified one large fibroid (1.5lbs) he confidently said he could remove labroscopically, along with three smaller, less concerning ones he could remove as well. I decided Dr. Parker was the right surgeon for me. Everyone I encountered in the process was exceptional. In my pre-op in person exam days before, Dr. Parker explained everything prior to surgery that would happen. He was with me before I went into surgery the same day, and was completely calm and grounding. I was never nervous with him, (and I have never had a surgery or anesthesia). In the surgery, my large fibroid had multiple thicker than usual blood vessels connected to the largest fibroid- he was able to stabilize my bleeding and safely bring me back with a complete procedure. He had to leave three small fibroids in (due to the length of the anesthesia and risk of further bleeding), and has clarified the low risk of any issues due to my age, hormonal levels, and even said that I could become pregnant without any risks to the fetus due to the size and location of the fibroids. I was admitted overnight for two nights at the hospital and transfused for blood loss. Within three weeks I was back to work and now it has been 6 weeks. I am walking 4 miles a day, my incisions are healing quickly and well, and am able to move around confidently without concern. After the surgery I immediately felt like someone who had been an unwelcome presence in my body for years was gone. It's hard to describe in words, but I feel like a new person in many ways. Dr. Parker was in communication with me when I came out of anesthesia, and in the days following from the hospital to home, and has been 100% responsive to any questions, extending the invitation to contact him should I have further questions. My post op follow up went well. He is still willing to respond to my questions even after the process was completed. The confusion, rush and pressure women encounter to have a not always necessary hysterectomy or trust doctors who lack skill, experience, bedside manners, integrity, or empathy needed in this type of situation is alarmingly common. But the consequences are serious. What is uncommon is to find a physician who can change your life in a conversation before you've even had a surgery, and follow through to its full resolution. Dr. Parker was one of the best doctors I have ever worked with in my life. I highly recommend him, he is the best of the best. I am extremely anxious about having any surgery or medical procedure done, but working with him put me at ease. The best part about working with him is that I always felt I could easily access him when I needed him and I also felt that he genuinely cared about me as his patient. This is so rare these days and so undervalued in the medical world. Previously, under another gynecologist I was given treatment of my fibroid condition through embolization, but over the years that procedure did not give me the relief I desired. Unfortunately, it made my condition worse. My fibroids was still intact and I still had no real relief from my symptoms. In my opinion, anyone who is considering treatment for their fibroid condition through embolization, I would have to advise against it, because of having my own personal experience with embolization. I will never forget Dr. Parker. He helped me get through my depression and prevented me from getting a hysterectomy. Dr. Parker is one of a kind, who specializes in fibroid in his field!!! I had three fibroids that caused my uterus to be enlarged. Physically, I look like I was 4-5 months pregnant. My symptoms were using the restroom constantly and feeling pressure on my pelvis. Dr. Parker is the best doctor that I have seen. I have suffered from fibroids and heavy-bleeding for about two years, so I asked around to look for good doctors in the field. One of my friends recommended Dr. Parker to me. Her friend had the problem of fibroids a few years ago. The other doctors suggested her to have hysterectomy. She said that Dr. Parker ordered some tests. After getting the test results, Dr. Parker did not think a surgery is necessary for her considering her age. He prescribed her some medicines and she has been doing good without a surgery since then. Before seeing Dr. Parker, I also went to see other doctors. They said that I have multiple fibroids, so I can only have either open abdominal surgery or hysterectomy if I feel my symptoms are bad. I really did not want to have these invasive procedures. After reading all the reviews and looking at his yelp reviews, I was really excited to see Dr. Parker. I even drove down from LA with my husband hoping that he would squeeze me in or at least look at my records sooner rather than later. I already had a surgery scheduled with another OBGYN but I was hoping that since Dr. Parker specialized in fibroids I wanted to see him. I waited and waited for a response. I contacted his office multiple times letting them know that I wanted to see Dr. Parker and would pay out of pocket to do so. I even cancelled the surgery that I was scheduled for the day before I would have it thinking that at least I'd be able to see Dr. Parker. I let his office know what happened. Finally a few weeks later I got a call from his office that he wasn't even going to see me. I cancelled a surgery so that I could at least get a consult with him and he would even see me. Dr Parker is hands down the most incredible surgeon & doctor I have ever had the pleasure of meeting! He performed my laparoscopic myomectomy, after 3 other doctors told me my fibroid removal could only be done with a full abdominal myomectomy, just 4 weeks ago at UCSD Koman Outpatient Pavilion and I had the quickest and easiest recovery thanks to him! I drove to La Jolla from LA & would've driven or flown a lot further to have my surgery performed by Dr Parker. The surgery went so smoothly that I was able to have my husband drive me back to LA in 3 hours of traffic after my surgery with the most minimal discomfort. In fact, because of the anesthesia I was sleeping most of the ride back which was great. I was walking outside just 3 days post-surgery, back in the gym on the treadmill and elliptical just 6 days post-surgery. The entire experience was better than anything I could have ever imagined. After living with a large fibroid for more than 2 years I finally found my way to Dr. William Parker. My fibroid had grown over the course of three years from 4cm to a whopping 13cm and although I tried every natural remedy under the sun including cleanses nothing was helping. I finally had to come to terms with either leaving it and waiting for menopause to shrink it or to have it removed. I chose not to do embolization because I don't want the MRI dye in me for a second. And that wouldn't have actually gotten rid of it anyway, it would only have shrunk it and even that wasn't guaranteed. I saw 4 other OBGYNs over the last two years. Three of them said hysterectomy was likely and that I'd need to consent to that prior to surgery in case they felt it necessary once they were 'in there'. One of them was even an Ayurvedically-aimed doctor. I was not feeling this at all. I found an OBGYN in La Quinta who referred me to Dr. William Parker. She said, if anyone can get this out, it's Dr. Parker. I consulted my IVF doctor in Beverly Hills who said the exact same thing. My husband and I met with Dr. Parker and as quickly as I said 'no way!' to the other three doctors after meeting them, my husband and I said, 'Yes. He's our guy.' You see, you either trust someone as a PERSON or you don't. And THEN you can go and look up their professional reviews and records. And one option that was very much an option was to not do anything because menopause for me would be arriving in the next five years most likely. Well, I decided to do the myomecmtomy. Laproscopically. I was concerned about the scars because I'm self-conscious and live in California so I wear bikinis often. I decided that I should be mature about it and choose the option that was the safest and had the faster recovery time AND no overnight hospital stay. So that was my decision. We don't live in San Diego. We live 2.5hrs away. So we arranged our pre-op to be the day before the day-surgery. Stayed at Torrey Pines Resort for 2 nights. I think it was Dr. Parker's nurse Griselda who suggested we stay over the night after the surgery. Smart move. I was in at 9am and out by 6pm and went back to the hotel and slept. Up the next day and back home by 1pm. No fancy painkillers needed, Advil was all I took. I also used a thing called a Bemer Mat which I think significantly sped up my recovery. I was told by Dr. Parker two weeks later I was good to go and resume regular activity. I still took it easy but I was able to walk right away. I would recommend a week off and lots of rest and reflection. This is an emotional surgery. Lots of gunk gets stored in those fibroids of ours!! I am very glad I got to meet a doctor who one of the good ones. No nonsense, caring and does it because he loves what he does. If you have a fibroid and are thinking about it - I HIGHLY urge you to at least get a consult with Dr. Parker before he retires! Seriously. He's not going to be doing this forever. I'm feel extremely fortunate that I was somehow led to him. I really wouldn't have let any of the others touch me. You MUST trust your doctor implicitly when they are going into you. After trying the zone diet, a personal trainer and two gym memberships, I was shocked when I found out that I needed an emergency myomectomy. I wasn't getting fat - my fibroids were just making my stomach look like I was 3-4 months pregnant! Doctors told me the best case scenario was a six month treatment of Lupron, before a myomectomy with a surgical incision from below my sternum, all the way down to my waistline. Also, it seemed that every specialist I met with mentioned a hysterectomy & they scoffed at the prospect of preserving my fertility. I realized that I had to seriously educate myself about fibroids and the available treatments. By my surgery day, my fibroids protruded in my belly like a full-term, 9 month pregnancy. The staff at St. John's hospital welcomed me with kindness & superior service, and the anesthesiologist was phenomenal. Dr. Parker got me through surgery with a healthy uterus in only about 2 1/2 hours! True to his word, he preserved my fertility! Those first days in the hospital were challenging. I went from being a fiercely independent person, to someone who needed assistance to do everything! But, with the encouragement of wonderful nurses, I got out of bed by myself by day 3 and walked a little by day 4. My post-op recovery in the hospital lasted through Labour Day weekend. Despite that, Dr. Parker came to see me EVERYDAY & called EVERY evening until I was discharged from the hospital! It has taken a while for me to write this. Today marks a year since I had my surgery with Dr. Parker. Dr. Parker is the by far the best doctor I have seen. I had a really difficult time finding good healthcare for a fibroid I had. I lived with this for over five years. At least six doctors I saw told me I needed a hysterectomy, and none of them were kind to me when I questioned the procedure. Dr. Parker finally took care of the problem. He was also able to explain my symptoms and he treated me like a person. I just placed second female in a half marathon last weekend and second female in a marathon last October. First, I want to address the review about making the appointments and the scheduling and seeing Dr. Parker-there is a process you have to follow. He is a very skilled doctor who sees patients from all over the world. Here is what I had to do: I called the office, they took my information down and told me his office manager will get in touch with me. I did have to fill out intake form UCLA website and was given a number. That is the screening process, it took a minute for the office manager to get in touch. When she did, I was told that I had to mail all documents and any MRI's and or Scans to his office-via the post office-once he reviewed them, he would then let me know if he can take me on as a patient. So I sent everything I had. His office manager contacted me to let me know they received my package. She contacted me again about week to 2 weeks later to let me know that he wanted me to take an MRI with and without contrast, so I did. Mailed the findings off. Again, the office manager contacted me to let me know they received it and then it took week to two weeks for me to get an answer back. I set up my appointment, which was for a few weeks later. At the appointment he was everything you could ever want in a doctor as was his staff! they are amazing and so helpful! He wasn't pushy, he went over the MRI with me as he showed me the MRI on the computer. I had a quick exam and then he gave me a few choices. He isn't money driven. He cares about his patients and wants to give them the best possible care. He suggested I go and see a doctor he worth with in LA who specializes in a non invasive treatment for fibroids. To see if I qualified before we jumped to surgery. Well, unfortunately the non-invasive treatment I couldn't do since my fibroids were to big. So I called and set up my surgical consultation. They let me know that he was pretty booked till after Christmas. The office manager said that he would tell Dr. Parker what surgery I choose and will call me back with a few date options. a week later I lucked out. Someone had canceled their laparoscopic surgery. I was offered the date and took it. This all happened in October 2019. At the surgery consultation when I got to see him they were great, he went over what will happen, he did a quick exam and I was given a booklet with everything I could ever need to know about what to buy and how to take care of myself before and after surgery. Even what to expect after surgery. The surgery day was scary but his team and staff were amazing. super friendly. so helpful! When I left the hospital, that day, we went back to our hotel room (I live in Murrieta, do not drive home if you don't life near the hospital. Trust me, just don't do it.) There is pain, but you have your meds. take them. 2 days after surgery Dr. Parker called me, not his nurse, him. He took the time to call me and ask me how I was doing, how I was feeling. He stayed on the phone and answered any questions I had any concerns, my doctors in NC who took out my 20cm ovarian cyst didn't even do that! It was so kind of him. On Nov 7, 2019 was my check up. it took 35 minutes to be seen because Dr. Parker was backed up 30 minutes. You have to understand something, if you want a good doctor that takes his time with his patients, with YOU, then he's going to get backed up from time to time. It is what it is. I am okay with that. I know that he cares and he doesn't try and rush you. When he's with you, nothing else matters, you feel important. So be patient! Everything went well. Where do I even begin! If you are reading this, you have probably been tirelessly dealing with female issues and searching for answers that you have not been able to find. I was in the same space when, by the grace of God, I found Dr. Parker. I have been dealing with difficult cycles since I was 12 years old. What started out as morning sickness and migraines, led me to having very heavy periods, fatigue, debilitating pain, nausea and thus finding a fibroid. I had been to 5 different OBGYN's and was told to go on birth control. I had been on birth control for 10 years and decided to go off of it as I took a more natural approach to my healthcare. Surgery has always scared me and previous OB's told me to try not to get surgery until after I had had children. My fibroid was diagnosed at age 26 and I am 30 today. I was told "try and get pregnant" that will cure the fibroid after childbirth. I was also told to look into the UAE (uterine artery embolization) procedure. That this procedure would not affect my fertility--which Dr. Parker quickly told me it would not be in my best interest if I wanted to have kids someday. I am nowhere near having kids so to think that my only option every OB told me was to basically struggle for more years down the line until I did meet my husband and have a family did not sit right with me. I would have to set alarms at work to make it to the bathroom in time. There have been several times I would bleed out. I have ruined many pairs of sheets, 3 office chairs, and office carpets while trying to make it to the bathroom. Sometimes my body would try to pass clots so much that it would not even keep a tampon inside. I share all of this openly because I am beyond grateful to be on the other side. I'm baffled as to how anyone could have a negative experience with a doctor so genuine, so caring but most of all so professional. I have only wonderful things to say about Dr. Parker, he is the best in his field & it took me a year, 3 other doctors and my own due diligence to resolve a painful & difficult fibroid issue. He is a leading fibroid expert who explains everything clearly & direct. I never had to wait more than 10 minutes to see him, and never felt rushed during the appointment. He took his time to make sure I understood all my options & this is a testament as to how he respects his patients. His staff has his schedule running like a fine-tuned machine & the nurses at the hospital (who don't have to say anything btw) rave about him behind his back. The 1st Dr. I saw (I like to call him Dr. Beverly Hills) was a condescending schmuck, the 2nd was unconcerned about my medical history and the 3rd wanted to do ridiculous & unnecessary testing when the uterine gods stepped in and bestowed upon me Dr. Parker. "Michelle S," with her brilliant 1-star review was correct. Dr. Parker doesn't have time to pander to your tragic lack of resourcefulness. Pro-tip: an MRI has to be ordered by the same gynecologist who referred you to Dr. Parker in the 1st place. Physicians who are not yet treating you cannot make those orders. He's not a PCP, he's a specialty surgeon which means he needs certain tools, i.e. an MRI, in order to do his job efficiently. Now...after your PCP or gyno prescribes the MRI & Dr. Parker sees you, he can order whatever your heart desires. Except pizza, because again, not really his job. Before I move on to "Colleen K's" ridiculous review I'll finish by saying-take control of your own health. Understand when you were given that referral you were handed a golden ticket which would have made your life better in so many ways. All you had to do was make a few more phone calls, fulfill one basic request & you would have been on your way to a fibroid-free uterus. But I'm guessing life is a ongoing struggle considering your apathetic approach in trying to convince fellow yelpers that a whole week constitutes an ungodly amount of time. Maybe check back after you have suffered over a year, have a uterus the size of a 6-month pregnancy & cycles that leave you anemic. Had you discussed this with Dr. Parker he would have told you that they don't know the whole story. It would be really irresponsible of Dr. Parker to say only xenoestrogens cause fibroids. I realize your PhD of Google-Med probably took several days to achieve, but I'm pretty sure Dr. Parker has spent his whole career researching this one topic; which leads me to address your closing remarks. Removing fibroids while keeping the uterus intact is a much more difficult procedure than a hysterectomy (hence specialty surgeon). Many gynecologists aren't skilled enough to do this type of procedure but are totally willing to use your uterus & desperation for relief to pay for their Equinox membership. Luckily with fibroid programs at UCLA designed to continue Dr. Parker's research & achievement, more Dr.'s are being trained in fibroid removal, as we now know how important it is to keep our lady parts. I found Dr. Parker online, I read many great reviews but was still skeptical thinking maybe so many positive reviews are just people close to him posting. I have had fibroids for years, but recently they have grown quite BIG! And just couldn't get a straight answer from multiple doctors I have seen, some who said hey let's just take out your uterus you don't need it anyway! So after many sleepless nights of worrying I made an appointment. The first thing they required was that I have an MRI. That baffled me because no other doctor had even suggested an MRI even after huge growth spurts. I went to Dr. Parker today, and all I can say is WOW! Dr. William Parker is, in my opinion, the best in his field. He was able to give my husband and me hope after I had given up completely. I had a fibroid that measured (14 x 13 x 10 cm). It was discovered in 2010 and the surgeon that found it performed a myomectomy to remove it. I discovered six months later that the surgeon did not remove the fibroid (in fact the surgeon would not even see me again). It appears that I had surgery for no reason and became very depressed and discouraged. My husband and I proceeded to visit other gynecologists and fertility specialist who gave me several different diagnoses. All of the five out of six doctors recommended that I have a hysterectomy. This was devastating news because my husband and I want to conceive a child. Then we met Dr. Parker who studied my case carefully and gave us the wonderful news that he could remove this huge fibroid without removing or damaging my uterus. Dr. Parker was the seventh doctor that I had seen. My surgery was complicated, and I wanted to be in the hands of a great surgeon. I'm glad I waited. I had vetted all of the surgeons that made my short list, ad nauseam. I thought I had found my surgeon, but on the last visit, he changed the terms of what we had agreed to, and asked if I would be comfortable cutting down the center of my body. Another doctor had asked me to sign a release to remove my uterus if, once she went in, she felt this was the best option. I had twenty-five fibroids, the largest the size of a large melon. At this point, I felt defeated. I almost agreed to the horrible cut, down the center of my body. I had read a lot of articles about preserving the uterus, and what surgery options were available for women in my position. I noticed the articles that resonated with me the most had a name in common: Dr. William Parker. I decided to look him up. To my surprise, he was located in Santa Monica, not far from me! After I left the hospital, he saw me regularly, until the incision healed. It was sad to say good-bye because his staff had begun to feel like extended family. I had been a sufferer of severe cramps and heavy bleeding caused by fibroids, which ran in my family. While trying to get pregnant, I had a myomectomy in hopes my problems would be solved. I was referred to Dr. William Parker by an interventional radiologist at UCLA; and when I tell you this referral was heaven sent, trust me J I have struggled with infertility for many years before being told - you have fibroids. I researched Dr. Parker thoroughly and was excited to find a Dr. whose immediate recommendation wasn't a hysterectomy. On my first visit Dr. Parker patiently reviewed the MRI with me - answering all my questions and explaining that the location of some of my fibroids are known to cause fertility issues. About 5 years ago, I discovered I had fibroids rather incidentally, although I was relatively asymptomatic. It all came to a head in January of 2018 when I started to look pregnant, my pants no longer fit at the waist and my energy levels were so low. The bulk in my tummy became even more obvious when I felt through. I was apprehensive because I've never been ill all my life to where i needed medical or surgical attention and being a clinician myself, I knew the implications of any decision I would have to make. I was suffering from extremely heavy menstrual cycles for many years, I am 49 years old. A year before my surgery date, I noticed a hard mass in my stomach, around my belly button. I first had my gynocologist look at it with an ultrasound machine, but nothing showed up. I didn't think too much about it, although it nagged me a bit. So I saw my general practitioner who ordered an MRI. The MRI showed that I had five fairly large fibroids attached to my uterus, one of them was 8 X 10 cm. I was referred by my gynocologist to a specialist at my local hospital, Cedars Sinai, (whom I will keep unnamed), but she said that the only way to take care of it was by having a hysterectomy. My mother had a hysterectomy when she was in her 50's and I saw the pain and agony that she went through. I decided to do more research, and I was referred to another local specialist (this time at UCLA), who also recommended that because of the difficult reaches of some of the fibroids, the best thing to do was to have a hysterectomy. While doing my own extensive research online, I found Dr. William Parker based on his reviews. I drove the two plus hours down to La Jolla from Los Angeles, and after reviewing my MRI, Dr. Parker told me that he could remove the fibroids without a hysterectomy, through laparoscopic myomectomy. I was nervous but excited to be finally rid of the fibroids that were causing me to have heavy periods, uncomfortable and sometimes painful sex, constant fatigue, depression, and other awful symptoms that made me miserable. Words can't even express how grateful I am to Dr. Parker. My husband and I had been trying to get pregnant for nearly 2 years. We finally decided to get some help and was nearly mislead by a less experienced doctor. We discovered that I had two fibroids, one was of substantial size - 16cm. It had distorted my uterus which we suspect was the cause of the infertility. The original doctor suggested we do nothing to the fibroid and get pregnant aggressively with the help of IUI/IVF. There were obviously some concerns given the size of the fibroid. Even if we were able to get pregnant, we were also concerned that I wouldn't be able to carry the baby to term. I was obsessed and wanted to make the best decision for myself. Google was my best friend and I read up on anything I can find about fibroids and that's how I found Dr. Parker. I've never had such an invasive surgery and I've never spent the night at the hospital before. My surgery was a success! It had minimal impact on my uterus, which was so important to me. After only a few weeks, my uterus is located where it should be and nearly back to its normal size. During surgery, the nurse kept my family informed of the progress. Once the surgery was completed, Dr. Parker found my family and updated them himself. Even though the surgery was a bit more complicated given the location of the big fibroid (it was tucked away behind some organs), I had minimal blood loss and had responded well to the surgery. My recovery was amazingly quick. I was doing laps around the hospital floor the first night after surgery and I was off of pain medication once I was discharged from the hospital. Every day I was in the hospital, Dr. Parker would call to check up on me every night. In the morning, he and the assisting doctor would stop by my room to see how I was doing. I can't say enough just how thankful I am for Dr. Parker and to have found him thru his website. He is the most caring, compassionate and kindest physician I have ever met. With his outstanding skills, his knowledge and experience, he makes a wide variety of treatments available for women with uterine fibroids you can not find anywhere else. Since ever I found out I had fibroids more then 10 years ago (I'm 44 now) I was told the only option I had was to undergo a hysterectomy. One of the worst things every doctor would say to me was that I should consider a hysterectomy due to my age. I absolutely did not want a hysterectomy no matter what age. Instead I lived with my fibroids and the pain and discomfort they were causing. One fibroid grew extremely large in size and the pain and abdominal discomfort was growing with it. I went thru extreme cramping during my cycles every month. I couldn't fit into my clothes anymore, even gained nearly 20 pounds. I would only wear baggy clothes, so not to show my huge abdomen and would constantly be asked if I was expecting. Once again I went to seek treatment. I could tell the gynecologist I consulted reluctantly agreed to a myomectomy. She told me she would need to make a vertical as well as horizontal abdominal cut, she would only remove the large fibroid and leave the other ones. I wasn't very confident in her skills and was discouraged to follow thru. I had previously researched online for fibroid doctors when I came across Dr. Parkers website. I'll keep it short since everyone else has written such long reviews. Dr. Parker was excellent! He thoroughly reviewed all of my records before I met with him. He was ON TIME, which was amazing! Amazing... I can't thank Dr. Parker enough. He is the absolute best. Many doctors told me I needed a hysterectomy, had endometriosis, and would never have children. My MRI was a bit of a mystery revealing what appeared to be adenomyosis with a fibroid the size of a pea. Actually, during laparoscopic myomectomy surgery it was discovered that I had a uterine fibroid the size of a plum and about a tiny half an inch of endometriosis. I was so relieved that I had the expert Dr. Parker make this discovery while in surgery... if it had been another doctor who didn't know what they were doing upon this surprise, who knows what would have happened. Dr. Parker is kind, on time, confident, and honest. Intense skill is needed to perform Myomectomy surgery and Dr. Parker has it. Please do not trust your body with doctors who's first solution is to do a full abdominal myomectomy or hysterectomy without really exploring all of your options properly. With a huge and fast growing fibroid that enlarged my uterus to a size of 22-week pregnancy, the increasingly severe bulk symptoms affected significantly the quality of my life, mentally and physically alike. Of all the specialists I consulted with, most of them recommended hysterectomy. Only a couple of them offered myomectomy, yet they couldn't tell me the likelihood of a successful surgery. My small fibroid grew over the last eight years into multiple fibroids of 13 large and small, total 3 pounds, the size of 5 months pregnancy, the size which I could no longer hide. My first surgical consultation was with Dr. K. She recommended a hysterectomy. Even with myomectomy, she said, it is possible that she might have to remove part or all of my uterus while I was under anesthesia. But because I was determined not to lose my organ, I prayed and kept searching for a surgeon who could help me. I found Dr. Parker while I was reading his online Kindle book, "Fibroids: A Gynecologist's Second Opinion." I thought I took care of my fibroids five years ago when I underwent the rather harrowing Uterine Fibroid Embolization procedure. It worked to the extent that it relieved the pulling I use to experience, but this minor gain was hardly worth the intense cramping I experienced over several months and the early menopause that resulted. Worst of all, my enormous 17 cm fibroid never shrank and some of my symptoms returned within three years. I felt like I didn't have many options having already attempted one procedure. It was both demoralizing and depressing to think I'd gone through the time, expense, and pain of this procedure for no real gain. I'd have to live with a bloated belly, the constant need to run to the bathroom and that awful pulling again. Luckily, my depression sent me in search of an answer. It was pretty much minutes after I entered the search term "options for fibroids" that Dr. Parker's name appeared and the accolades jumped off the page. I had to meet this man. I made the appointment with the greatest hope but mindful of the mistakes I made in "drinking the Koolaid" about embolization. I had my list of questions ready, and I was determined to ask the doctor even if, like my last doctor, he appeared businesslike, dispassionate, condescending, or bored. This, I came to find upon my very first appointment was so NOT Dr. Parker. And as a further contrast to my hideous experience with embolization, my healing this time around was rapid. The "minimally invasive" embolization had me knocked out for about three weeks. I continued to struggle for at least one more week, feeling groggy, emotional, and dejected by those still obvious bulges in my abdomen. The prescribed medication was egregious. But surgery in the hands of the sublime Dr. Parker saw me up and around two days after the procedure, free of painkillers and fibroids, buoyant over the success of my surgery and the gift that is Dr. Parker. Today, two weeks after my surgery, I feel amazing: healthy, energized grateful, and proud that I did not give up and resign myself to a life of inconvenience and discomfort. After about a year of watchful waiting I knew it was time to have my three submucosal fibroids removed (largest was 6 cm). I found Dr. Parker's website which alone reflects how committed and focused he is on the treatment of fibroids. Based on the size, type, and location of my fibroids, Dr. Parker recommended full abdominal myomectomy but did not pressure me and in fact I waited 4 months before actually having surgery. During that time I continued to research and even spoke with a laproscopic expert at Stanford who told me he could remove my fibroids laproscopically, however upon further research and advice from my father (who is also an MD) and his colleagues, they confirmed that laproscopic surgery would mean cutting up the pieces (morcellating) the fibroids to remove them through the small incisions which is not recommended by the FDA, longer duration of surgery, and greater likelihood of missing fibroids that were not detected on the ultrasound/MRI. I was apprehensive about full surgery but after hours and hours (probably days!) of research and speaking with different doctors I knew full abdominal myomectomy was the right choice for me. My experience with Dr. Parker from the initial consultation to after surgery was excellent. Before surgery, Dr. Parker and his team provided plenty of information to help me prepare (incl. what to have at home for my recovery). During surgery, Dr. Parker's team was frequently updating my husband so he was in the loop on my progress which was very thoughtful. They ended up removing 3 more fibroids which were not detected on MRI (for a total of 6). Yet another reason why abdominal myomectomy was the right choice. And following surgery I felt fully supported with Dr. Parker visiting and calling to check in on me. I was also pleasantly surprised by how small and low my incision is; it is truly hidden even under a low bikini and is a thin line. I must also mention how great Dr. Parker's office staff is - they pick up the phone, are prompt when providing/processing paperwork, and are friendly. For me those "little things" were actually very important because preparing for surgery is stressful enough, you don't need administrative challenges to make things any more difficult. My results so far have been great. After recovery where I took a month off from work, I'm now back to being able to exercise as much as I did before and thankfully my periods are now normal! In hindsight I wish I had done the surgery sooner. And while I was worried about surgery it really was manageable and I felt so lucky to have been under Dr. Parker's care and expertise. If you are reading this, you or a loved one is looking for a solution to your fibroids. Dr. Parker is "the stop." I suffered for 13 years because other doctors were eager to cut out my uterus. I flew from MD to see him in Jan 2018. Best decision ever! Dr. Parker did not think twice about removing my fibroids. He even gave me other options. He is the best. He is amazing, "the expert," kind, compassionate, warm-hearted, and will ease your anxiety. He cares about his patients' well being. He is a true healer. He will take out every fibroid if you agree to undergo surgery and liberate you. Still can't believe I am free. I had an abdominal myomectomy and my incision was healed by the end of the 2nd week. I did a 1 mile walk with rests inbetween the day after surgery. I did not need pain meds by the fourth day after surgery. He will patiently & diligently answer your many questions and will ensure you are sufficiently educated about your uterus to make decisions for yourself. There is no pressure from him.
