The store has everything for Homey- Goods: huge selection of cool stuff. The staff is generally knowledgeable and friendly. Everything seems reasonably priced. I'm a wonderful son. Well, historically that's been untrue with demonstrative proof on many, many occasions, but I'm trying to make up for it in the best way a man can appreciate another man: Giving them a large device on which to cook meat. My dad's grill was falling apart, and I noticed at the right time to coincide with Father's Day. Luckily, Williams Lumber is around. I already know my dad likes this spot for lumber, and he's an Ace Hardware rewards guy (he's anti-Home Depot, and happy to tell you all about why), and they had the grill I was looking at in stock. Everything fell into place. I gave them a call, and Bryce helped me out. He confirmed they had the grill, and because it's not really a gift to give someone something heavy to pick up or complicated to assemble, we arranged to have the grill put together and delivered in just a couple days. They took care of everything without a hitch, including a nice grill cover and brush to keep this one in much better shape than the last. They also have hardware, and do a good job selling it. read more

I am not handy or knowledgeable about home repair but occasionally have to fix something myself. When I used to go the big box stores, it was often hard to find a staffer who would correctly answer my questions so I was sometimes sent home with the wrong product. At Williams, it's easy to find a staff person, they focus on and understand my questions and take time to explain well, and I always leave with the right item for the job and feeling much more confident about it. The store also has lots of cool useful things I hadn't come in looking for but am glad I found in addition to finding the thing I need. I rarely go anywhere else for hardware or lumber. This is the best store in the state. The staff is courteous, knows their product and always helpful. The products they sell, in all departments are of the highest quality. Keep an eye out for the Carhardtt sales, for instance, it is worth the wait. The lumber yard staff is wonderful. They never ever put a #2 piece of anything in my vehicle, they check each one. I tip them every time, as I surely appreciate their efforts. read more

From beginning to end the process was messy . after choosing kitchen cabinets, I was billed for the full amount . when I complained , I learned I had a choice to pay half upfront and half upon delivery , Iwhich wasn't mentioned day of purchase . Then , delivery day was set for after 12 noon , But he came 10 AM because he "had other deliveries in the area ". Before I knew he was here , the delivery person opened my back door to the attached mudroom and took out my lawnmower to put in my boxes (isn't that trespassing ?) also , a $15 delivery fee was added to my invoice which no one ever mentioned . No adjustments to said masks were made after I asked them all what the point was in wearing them if done so incorrectly. Not recommended. Went to the Pleasant Valley location to buy two boxes of ship towels. The gentleman behind the contractor counter grabbed one the boxes out of my hand and said, "this is going back on the shelf!" I was confused and asked why to which he replied, "we have purchase limits!" For two, 200 count shop towel boxes? Really? There were no signs anywhere about the purchase limit and this employee's condescending attitude was not warranted. Will not patronize this business again. read more

Until Williams opened their Center in Hyde Park, this was my go-to place for hardware (as opposed to big box chains). But the store in Hyde Park is smaller and doesn't carry everything, so I still have to come up here occasionally. That would be for things like some garden supplies, electronics, tools and major hardware. And the Christmas decorations - which they were setting up today - are also cool! The employees here are great. I did have some disappointments here today, unfortunately, both involving bulbs. I was first informed that none of the Williams garden centers will be carrying flowering bulbs this fall. I was also hoping to buy Ace brand CFL light bulbs here. I refuse to buy GE bulbs, and I had heard Ace products were still being made in Illinois. The guy with whom I spoke was a little too honest. He said that Ace bulbs are now an offshoot of GE and are also made in China (as are GE bulbs). I guess I have to investigate Sylvania bulbs now. But for all my disappointments, this is still a good store, and one I'll continue to visit if I'm in the area or can't find particular items in the Hyde Park store. read more

Watch the accounting. If you ever open a contractor account with the,, watch the accounting. They charged me for almost 20K worth of materials that I did not order. Months later, they served me with court papers and when I went in and proved to them that I had not ordered or authorized these items, they agreed and said they would stop the preceding. They didn't and as such I was considered a no-show by the court and the case was adjudicated against me. They they sold the debt to a debt collector, who added a decade of interest before coming after me. If their accounting practices are unscrupulous, how can they be trusted with anything else? read more

I've been trying to figure out how to hang a particularly heavy picture on sheet-rock wall that isn't that strong. I've been to Hobson's in Kingston and stopped by the Williams in Rhinebeck over the weekend. No one had a solution for this problem. I stopped by Rhinebeck again today, because I knew that Lynn was working and she's come up with other solutions for home projects in the past. Sure enough, Lynn had a simple solution to this problem that no one else seemed to know about. She's an absolute gem! read more

I still visit this Williams Lumber from time-to-time, but not so much anymore following their big "roof cave-in" within the last few years. Their register situation hasn't changed much except maybe now all the registers are in one horizontal line near the front which makes getting around others one gigantic mess, but sometimes it has to be the only place that carries certain things I need to run my Uber business (and yes, I found a special USB lightning adapter/micro-USB cord here which I bought and use, and I still couldn't believe I could find that here. Employees are hard to come by every time I come in, and a staple I used to find in this store - it's free self-service popcorn from a popcorn popper machine on the weekends - you won't find that here anymore - and that surely is a shame to not find - a great benny for shopping here - gone. I have to resist myself from saying things I just don't mean about not coming back here when I do actually come back on occasion. Although not quite "out of my league or area", this store is still amazing around the holidays. It's still got the gigantic Christmas trees and train set up, although it too has become smaller, and as for another reason I come in here for - free boxes in the hallway - I seem to only find one size - a size I rarely ever need which Williams used to more-perfect for my needs. I guess I got to call them now to see if there's something more suitable they can set aside for me upon their next shipments. It's the basic emergency handyman needs of items at this store now - unless you know someone to talk to, it's hard to get around and to get to find stuff not found in-store, it's just painful. It got worse shortly after they opened up the caved in area, but things just seem out-of-place to me. Things I used to find as "the classic staples here" are no longer easily found or if they are still here, they seem less "common" and highlights of my store visit and are no longer a landmark to the areas in this store. It's not so great that this place still has trouble finding my "AceRewards" card - even after they go in by telephone number, and the times I give them the number, they find a record that's never attached to my rewards card from a much bygone era decades ago. I really don't like losing points I acquired due to technical problems that still haven't been remedied. read more

Always someone knowledgeable in the appropriate trade to help answer questions in their department . . . like the big box stored USED to be. Customer service is good if there is a problem. Shows that it's worth buying local and sometimes paying a bit more in exchange for great customer service, and support if needed. Ace rewards helps recoup some savings. read more

I stopped in today to make a quick purchase. I wasn't in the store for 30 seconds before I was called to the front of the store and scolded because my dog was barking in the car. I answered immediatly at the front and assured them that my dog was fine, the windows were open, I was making a 5 minute purchace my dog is a puppy who gets upset when I leave the car. I was promptly attacked by all staff and four people in the parking lot. I would highly recommend that the owner train their staff against fascism and perhaps encourage them to explore the serious and real problems in their world. My dog suffers nothing by being in a car for 5 minutes. Meanwhile 300 people are dead in Gaza. America needs to be very careful of its fascist tendendancies. Bah Humbug! My wife and I went to the Williams Lumber Rhinebeck store this morning. They advertised 50% off non-sale Christmas items for today, 12/19/19 only. We loaded our cart with a goodly number of decorations, Christmas lights etc. We had their Christmas Wish Book in hand. Neither in the book nor the floor displays did any of the items show a previous price or that these items were currently sale priced which would make them exempt from the sale. We got to the cash register and unloaded everything on to the counter. I presented my Veteran's card. No surprise they didn't honor that today. They have many exceptions and refuse to honor it much more often than they accept it. They do say there are exceptions for honoring the card. We presented the 50% discount coupon. The rather glum, unsmiling young cashier rang everything up. Without any explanation she arrived at a grand total. Everything was at face price. No discounts. No explanation that the 50% coupon wouldn't work on any of the many items. My wife politely asked her to check the total. 'What about the 50% discount coupon we just handed you?' The cashier started to display a bit of an 'attitude'. She stated that each of the items was already on sale, discounted. We asked how we were supposed to know that since it wasn't reflected in the flyer or the store displays. We basically received a 'non-answer'. We were disgusted, made our feelings known to her and left everything on the counter and left the store. Beware of the advertised 'Sandy's Crazy Christmas Sale'. The 'Crazy' part is how they chose to exclude everything that we were planning to purchase. Whatever Christmas spirit we went into the store with evaporated at that checkout counter. Crazy Christmas sweaters on employees today did nothing to reverse the bad feeling with which we left the store. We shop at Williams frequently and have for many years. What we have disappointingly noticed over time is that coupons are increasingly refused for a variety of reasons. We do read the small print but even doing that often isn't effective. A statement on coupons 'Store Reserves the Right to Determine Additional Exclusions' seems to have them covered for just about anything. Another disappointing trend is the disappearance of friendly, knowledgeable staff from the two Williams stores where we shop: Rhinebeck and Hyde Park. We often need guidance with projects and can look in vain for someone who knows more than we do. Sadly, many employees are rather clueless. read more

I see some very whiny reviews on here. If it weren't for Williams Lumber I would have had a very hard time getting quality lengths of lumber when I built my house! I have to go to Williams for quality clear pine, can I get that at Lowes or Home Depot, NO! When I finished my Upstairs and needed drywall boomed up to the 2nd floor, Sandy's folks were all over it. Lowes wanted $3 a sheet to carry it up my finished stairwell! Maybe next time Sandy has to remodel he could have a town hall meeting so all the experts could tell him how to do it! In the past 5 months, I've spent a majority of my time and income here. They just underwent a huge expansion in the Rhinebeck location, and everyone seems a bit discombobulated as the dust settles. I like seeing the same friendly faces every week, who'll advise you on the best paint or caulk to buy for this and that project. I ordered a window from here, and that went smoothly.. Staff is always approaching you first to see if you need help. Prices are on par with Lowes, too, so why not support local? The best part though? The free popcorn on the weekends! read more

I had a very poor experience. I called ahead in these uncertain times and was told they had some of what I needed (85%), so I drove down, waited at the contractor desk as instructed, and then was told, no they didn't have 85%, they had 45% of what i needed. I went ahead and paid for them, went out to the yard, where I waited quite a while, then someone came, took the yard slip and went into the building. After quite a while, more he came out and said, no they didn't have ANY. I was angry, and would have stormed off, but I had to go back into the store to get a refund. I only got a half hearted 'sorry' out of it. Nothing more. read more

I don't frequent here mainly due to the stories I've heard from friends who've worked there. I've met the owner and he's not very nice. Williams lumber is plain and simple a horrible place. Especially the pleasant valley location. I'm a professional painter by trade and I drive into Poughkeepsie to buy all my paint solely because of the employees at Williams. They all have a bad attitude there. I haven't even seen how much of a discount they give contractors cause I refuse to go there. Every once in a while I'll give it a shot to see if anything's changed. They got rid of the circle in the middle where you would just get blank stares from their employees and now spread them throughout the store so they still can't help you. I live less then five minutes from there. And drive to Poughkeepsie to get my supplies that's gotta tell you something. read more

God I hate most of the staff at this place; this is unfortunate because the store itself and the items available are terrific. Others have complained as will I about the checkout lines ... just be prepared to wait and leave it at that. A couple of the clerks get it but for the most part the lines are intolerably slow either because the staff doesn't understand the concept of people waiting in line OR the fact that the owners have them doing ridiculous tasks that are not customer friendly ... i.e. I'm returning a tube of caulk that I bought there yesterday, someone from the paint department needs to be called over and inspect it first before the cashier can accept the item, meaning everyone in line waits, OR I'm buying five of the exact same item and each item (sometimes bulky like a furnace filter) needs to be scanned separately rather than just scanning one item and then tapping the 5 on the register to register 5 items being sold. This takes longer. If you need to return an item, there is a manual process of the clerk needing to type in a detailed description of the items being returned and why. This is stupid. Going back to my caulk example, I'm in the paint department and need help choosing the proper item. I ask for help, I show the clerk three types of caulk: latex, silicone and something else and ask him to explain the differences between them, he tells me: "Well they're all made by different manufacturers." DUH ... Many items are more expensive here than elsewhere. I get it, and I'm not looking for them to be matching prices with the big box stores BUT ACE is no small guy either. I like to support local, I like to support the "hometown" guy but please at least be somewhat close in price. Terrible re-organization of sales floor. Three isles of housewares next to contractor desk ...brilliant. I found an extension piece for a socket set in the lawn and garden area. Retail at it's worst. Simple: Place items for serious contractors in back half of the store, place decorative/home items in front half. You are wasting contractor's time mixing the two, much better before the roof. read more

I am baffled by the negative reviews of this place. My wife and I have done major renovation of our home, and so we (and our contractors) have used Williams a lot. I am not particularly handy, so I tend to need a lot of advice. They are patient with my dumb questions and their advice has always been helpful. There was one time a paint guy was a little rude because he thought I was not understanding his advice when actually I just disagreed with him, but that is one small bit of rudeness in probably 100 trips. As far as lumber, the stuff we have gotten there is so vastly superior to the lumber from Home Depot and Lowes that it is just silly to compare. Maybe that goes without saying, but with Williams nearby, it makes no sense to go to big boxes for lumber for any project that requires quality. It's sometimes a little cheaper at Home Depot, but even my untrained eye sees a huge difference (and my carpenters strongly agree). If price is the primary concern, there are definitely times when it makes more sense to go to Amazon or big boxes--especially for stuff that isn't really in Williams's wheelhouse like cleaning products--but their prices are generally good. This isn't the place I go for bargain shopping. I go there to make sure I get quality stuff at a decent price and can shamelessly ask 47 questions in one visit and get patient, accurate answers. I have been shopping at Williams for years and have never had a problem at the Rhinebeck or Hyde Park stores. I have mainly shopped at Rhinebeck for paints, lumber, and supplies. The paint department staff is consistently knowledgeable and helpful. Long lines? I don't think so. Perhaps there are a couple people ahead in line, but service has always been fast. I have rarely been in the store when someone did not ask me if I needed help. read more

So williams is ok to go through for building materials like sheetrock and insulation. They akso only charge 15$ to deliver locally. But if your looking for countertops i would not recommend. We did complete demo on our kitchen. Waited four weeks for our countertops and they were cut wrong by the msnufacturer. So now we wait another 3 weeks for the correct countertops to come in and they didnt do anything to make this better. I spent a lot of money here and i will never give them my business again. read more
