I figured some messiness comes with repair work. A few days later I picked them up and was honestly surprised at the cost for a fairly simple glue repair. For the price, I expected at least a little care in presentation -- not a full polish, but maybe a quick clean or some attention to detail. Instead, the boots looked almost exactly the same as when I dropped them off, and there really wasn't any visible repair work besides being told they were fixed. About a month later, I wore them for the first time since repaired and by the time I got from my house to my office, the entire sole had already come off again. After paying around $50 and not loving the overall experience, I didn't feel confident going back for another repair. I ended up buying shoe glue on Amazon, fixing them myself, and haven't had a single issue since. This was my first experience getting shoes repaired, so maybe my expectations were off, but for the cost and overall experience, it just wasn't worth it for me.

Hugo used to have a cobbler shop in the Midway shopping center in Point Loma. After COVID, his storefront closed, but he still takes on repairs. Every Saturday, he sets up in front of his former shop location to meet with customers, collect orders, and return completed work. He does the actual repairs from his home workshop in Chula Vista. I brought him three pairs of shoes, all of which needed significant work. The first was a pair of mules that had severe dry rot and needed the entire sole replaced. The repair came out beautifully and gave the shoes a whole new life. I also brought him two pairs of vintage leather boots. Both pairs had broken zippers, which he completely replaced. The leather was conditioned and restored, and they look fantastic. One pair had wooden heels that had been worn down from years of dragging my feet. Instead of replacing the entire heel, Hugo skillfully rebuilt only the worn portion, preserving the original look while making them look practically new. Everything was finished in about a week, and the craftsmanship was exceptional. It's becoming harder and harder to find skilled repair specialists who take this much pride in their work, especially for vintage footwear. Hugo clearly knows his craft. If you have shoes, boots, handbags, or leather goods that need repair, don't assume they're done for. Talk to Hugo first. I'm incredibly happy with the results and will absolutely be bringing future repairs to him.

Everything was explained patiently and thoroughly; I never felt compelled to make any decisions on the spot. Decided to get rubber heels for one pair ($60 vs $50 for the original sole material) and the original Birk soles for the other ($130). I also asked about another pair of espadrilles, which they said they could glue (I think $50?) or I could buy the glue myself for $15 (that they sell) and do it because it's a pretty easy fix.
