From the relaxing sounds and breeze from Honey Creek, which runs through the park, to the well constructed wooden bridges that line some of the trails, it is a fun trip for the family. There are camping areas for those that wish to stay the night. Bring the tent, though, as there aren't any cabins and I am unsure if they have camper access at this point. They do have fire rings and grills throughout the park. The real appeal, for me, are the trails. They have a number of them. One that travels along Honey Creek and borders a deer rescue/preserve maintained by a private owner. I once traveled far down the trail, near the deer preserve, only to be surprised by an entire herd of deer wondering near where I was on the other side of the owners fence. It was an experience I will never forget. The park, itself, can be busy in the Summer months. Family reunions are often held, here as is the occasional work picnic. The one negative is that the old swimming pool, which was free to use for the public, has been long closed and torn out. There is little sign of it other than the old refreshment stand and changing house. So, get out in the woods. Pick a trail A few go up into the nearby mountain. There is always a friendly face and decent conversation in the park. Just make sure to bring the bug spray and a jacket in the Spring and Fall. In the Summer, get ready to sweat on those walks. Reeds Gap has pretty much everything--swimming pool, concessions, playground, campsites--but I love it for the picnic areas, hiking, and general woodland setting. We used to come here for low-key Sunday afternoons: just bring the family and some food and set up shop at one of the picnic tables. After lunch, let the kids run around the woods or the playground, or maybe even go swimming. Today I was amazed that the park was nearly empty. I saw two rangers and two campers back towards the far (eastern) end of the park. The pool and concession stand were closed. What gives? It was a Friday. In the old days, there would have been hundreds of people. I took advantage of the peace and quiet. First I sat at a picnic table near Parking Lot B, directly facing Honey Creek. There is almost no better sound on Earth than gently running water in a rocky creek. I enjoyed my lunch and didn't even get out the book that I brought; I just looked and listened. Then I took off down the trail by the creek. At one point I lost the trail and just crossed the creek on some rocks, picking up the red trail, which I took all the way around the loop. I crossed the creek again on a large fallen tree. That was scary but thrilling. The whole excursion was exactly what I needed--some peace and calm while enjoying the outdoors. All I wanted to do was eat lunch, tromp around the woods, stop and read my book, tromp around the woods some more, etc. Perfect afternoon. This park has something for everyone, and all aspects are very well maintained by the DCNR. Kudos to them for their efforts to create and keep a great park.

We were so impressed by our friend's job, that we called Shade Mountain. We are absolutely thrilled that we did so. Randy Linebach from Shade Mountain met with us to discuss the project. His extensive knowledge of available materials and design suggestions was key to helping us define the project to our liking. He was very responsive through the entire project. I really dislike having to continually call contractors for status updates. Not with Shade Mountain. They kept us informed every step on the way. When planning your drive to the Petting Zoo and using GPS, be aware that several bridges appear to…read morebe closed indefinitely in the area. The road that ended up being open has a building with the address of 1722 Schwaben Creek Rd, Rebuck, PA 17867, and there were some small signs also posted. Be aware, that this road is a narrow farm lane, so do not bring a vehicle with low clearance. Follow the road and signs until you get to the admission hut and pay to enter. Get the larger bucket of animal feed when you pay to enter, you'll need it for at least the wagon ride. Animals in the Petting Zoo portion included goats, sheep, a baby camel, and a miniature horse. You can feed the ostrich's and peacocks roam around. There are also camel dies for an additional fee. To me the wagon ride was the MVP of the experience and why you need the larger bucket of feed. They take you into the gated areas of the park and stop several times to allow for feeding of the deer, goats, pigs, and big cows. After the ride, it's a short walk to visit the camels and donkeys, which you can also feed. There is also a small picnic area, kids' playground equipment, portable toilets, and hand washing stations available. If you do need to ask any questions, call ahead as they do respond quickly, but don't actively monitor their Facebook messages. Overall, this is a solid outing for kids, families, and people who love animals.

Ever wanted to take a trip to nowhere? If the answer is yes, then dammit, you got a whole lot of…read morenowhere to enjoy at McCalls Dam State Park! A visit here is really only for....?? Locals? Completeists who want to get to everyone of PA's 121 state parks? It's like writing a presidential history report on William Henry Harrison or James A. Garfield. It's like saying that you're favorite baseball player was Eddie Gaedel. Either way there's not much source material. MDSP is only 8 acres (4th smallest for those of you keeping score at home - and you should be keeping score!) and honestly it feels, out of place. The basic Wiki history is that some coot named Johnny McCall started a splash dam in 1850 so that he could power a saw mill. In the late 1860's that dam was rebuilt into a series of splash dams used for floating logs down to Watsontown on the Susquehanna River. While Johnny's splash damns are long gone, somehow he got a state park named after him when the CCC built this place during the early 1930's. Now when I say built this place, that's a very hyperbolic term because there ain't much here. The park in essence is a small gravel pad for a few cars and then across the road you've got a few beat up picnic tables, the White Deer Creek, a rustic shit pit that no doubt dates back to the 1930's and a single trail that goes along the creek a short distance before it randomly just...stops. What you also don't have here would any garbage or recycling so whatever you bring in, you need to take out with you. I assume at one point this place was a part of the surrounding Bald Eagle State Forest and it's 193K+ and then it was eventually splintered off into it's current configuration. There are also several other small and lesser state parks in the vicinity such as Raymond B. Winter, Ravensburg and Sand Bridge. The great band Spinal Tap wrote a song about the little Druids called "Stonehenge". In that epic classic they ask profound questions such as "No one knows who they were or what they were doing?" and "Where are they now and what would they say to us?" My version would be more like, "Who was Johnny McCall and why do we need a park named after him?" "Does this park even matter with how small it is and is there really any reason to even go?" If you want quiet and deserted or if you're mafia and looking for a great place to "make someone disappear", Bingo! You found it here!
