I recently won a one-month unlimited membership here at a local silent auction. There was some confusion about what my membership entails because the congratulations letter encourages me to bring a buddy and there is a spot for two names on the pass but the women at the front desk were unsure... I would love to be able to bring a buddy each time but unfortunately this was not clear. Yesterday was my first day and although I have been to the studio many times I forgot how much I missed practicing here. The teachers are wonderful and I love the venue. However membership is pricey which is why I haven't been back in over a year. I do need to take more advantage of the pay what you can classes but unfortunately most times do not fit within my schedule. I would honestly come everyday if I could afford it. What a wonderful yoga community! This center is smartly designed and caters to every need, whether it's a top quality teacher training, hot yoga, education, new yoga pants, or a good read. I love the instructors' willingness to actually help students get better in their practice rather than just going through the motions every week. I love that they're focused on everyone's safety and available for questions and recommendations. Its truly a place where everyone is welcome and the first yoga studio I've felt comfortable in. I was in Carolina Beach on vacation, with no interest in interrupting my yoga practice. I do vinyasa flow at home three or four times a week, so a peek at the website told me I could do this in Wilmington, as well. I also practice primarily hot vinyasa, so I was glad to see the offerings here. Succinctly put, if I could move this studio to Maryland, or myself more easily to Wilmington, I would, just to practice here. These were the most challenging, and at the same time fun and and fulfilling hot vinyasa practices I've had since I started in November. I sweated like crazy, beyond what I have ever done at home, and I loved it. :) Katie was a fantastic teacher, and I had another class with Tara, to whom I immediately gravitated. It was also nice to practice in a fully-windowed room with so many trees outside. It was a bit like being in a treehouse. :) Outside the studio, every staff member was so nice and accommodating to a drop-in student, and I felt none of the territorial issues that are sometimes obvious in other studios. I felt immediately at home. I checked out all of the other programming on the website and on the brochures on the walls, and it's clear that WYC is deeply engaged in all kinds of activities on and off the mat. I liked that a lot. I was also not familiar with the kunga philosophy, and it was nice to think of some percentage of my class fee going towards a charity. I took Kunga Basic Flow with Jamie today. I'm more of a team sports type of person so I was a little nervous about going to yoga class. Jamie's energy welcomed my newness & was also prepared for the more experienced yogis in the room. Apparently, the center has a different theme for their practice every month & this month was the ABCs of yoga. Jamie introduced the theme focusing on the A for acceptance. Her instructions were clear, concise, and supportive. The music was pleasantly surprising--some songs were familiar. I completed the class feeling accomplished, excited & relaxed. If you enjoy a wide variety of hot, non-hot, power, slow or gentle classes Wilmington Yoga Center has them all! By far the best well rounded studio in town with lots of classes & times. Heather's Power Flow Class is amazing, Hollar's Hot Slow Flow Class is addictive. Anything France teaches is worth taking just to have her as your instructor! I haven't had a bad class or teacher and I have been coming 3-4 times a week for 7 months. Another class at WYC yesterday, and it's fantastic to find that's it's not only still going strong, but growing and expanding! The center is currently under construction to expand the size of one of its current studios, create a third studio space, and include showers (!!). Never fear, though. The construction hasn't put too much of a damper on current classes. The schedule has been effected surprisingly little, and even though work was being done during my class, there was very little noise or disruption. Just tried the Core Power Hour yesterday - not for those looking to "dive into their flow" but exquisite for anyone who wants to strengthen their core to work toward advanced asanas (watch out, handstand!!). Since I've lived in Wilmington (10+ years) I've practiced yoga in 3 different yoga studios and two gyms. In fact, WYC was the first place I joined in Wilmington. I left to try other things, styles and places and have returned. I've been back for about 6 months now and I'm about to renew my class card (today actually). Their studio is warm and inviting and they have showers. Now for the good part, the instructors and classes. There's ALWAYS a class of some sort going on and most of them (with the exception of 1 or 2) are all levels. You can see the schedule on the MINDBODY app. They update changes to their schedule (including subs) really well. I love all the instructors but the ones that stick out in my mind are Noelle, Liana, Frances, Heather and JJ. Heather is hardcore so if you need a super challenge take one of her classes. I have to be in the mood. She's completely lovely, don't get me wrong. There are so many workshops and training opportunities at Wilmington Yoga Center. Advanced yogis who want to deepen their practice or newbies that want to take alignment/posture workshops are so welcome. There is also an annual retreat to Home of Hope Orphanage in Kerala, India if you're into service as well. WYC is not preachy in the least. So, if all you're interested in is a good stretch, like me, you won't feel pressured to buy their merch or join their workshops or attend their retreat. If you're from out of town and won't be signing up, you can always try a pay-what-you-can class. read more

I recently received a gift certificate to Wilmington Yoga Center for my 30th birthday. I'll admit, I'd dropped quite a few hints to my beloved that I wanted to try it out - not just yoga, but specifically Wilmington Yoga Center. I couldn't be any more pleased! I've attended three different classes since the 15th, each with different teachers. I've truly enjoyed each and every one, and I'm excited about trying more. Everyone I've met there so far has been very welcoming, and the classes themselves are wonderful. Being that I have practically no experience with yoga, I was initially nervous going into my first class. I realized just a few minutes in, I had no reason to be nervous. It was obvious that the skill level in the room varied greatly, and the teacher accommodated everyone accordingly. Also the new comers deal they're running is a GREAT deal. 30 days unlimited classes for $40. When my 30 days are up, I will without a doubt continue going. Really wanted to like this place. Classes are "interesting." Understand that "hot" or heated yoga to them is not the same as as traditional athletic "west coast" or bikram yoga. Use the term "flow" losely. A lot more stationary or restorative poses regardless of class description. Instructors may or may not practice with the class and may or may not walk around but I have yet to be corrected, adjusted, or asked if I needed modifications, attention, or help. I'm not a bendy person so I absolutely need help. Read course descriptions carefully. And BEWARE when you purchase CLASS PASSES they EXPIRE and are NOT refunded. You can extend the pass for a $15 charge. You may share a class ONCE if you have never shared one before. Once for you. You may not share classes with multiple people or multiple times. If you spend money there and aren't sure about schedule or changes, classes, instructors, or if the studio is a good fit for you, hesitation takes time and you will lose your money. read more

To add to my first review of Wilmington Yoga Center, I am sharing some updates! The expansion is completed, and has made W.Y.C. better in many ways. The hot/warm classes have been extremely well-attended, btw! The variety of practice types are numerous. The showers are welcoming to those changing for other destinations! I highly recommend trying one or more of the Five Elements* classes, too. For example, Kristin Cooper's* original series includes an "earth" class, and it is grounding ,especially a nice one when you feel you're a bit out of balance, "floating/ drifting ", for the days when life is feeling hectic; also amazing water classes are on the schedule, an earth class. The energizing ones will feel amazing for times when you are a bit uncomfortably lethargic, and/or seeking an air/ether energy perhaps to help with balancing/grounding oneself as well. The staff is always glad to help direct beginners and intermediate students on which are appropriate for one's level of experience. As an instructor seeking a wide scope contributing toward a 500-hour certification, I am enjoying the weekend workshop with different meeting people from other areas, as they seek out and attend the same awesome workshops I do; check out WYC's home site to see what is scheduled, find them listed. Expert yogis often working within their fields of expertise and training, often instruct here. Tried-and-true, well-educated teachers in their field, travel for weekend instruction from the likes of Atlanta and the renowned Kripaula Center The yoga certified instructor,w/a business as a P.T.professional brings teachers'anatomy-based courses for yoga instructors; it is such an interesting fit, and the core themes vary with emphasis on learning about assessing A perfect fit, and again, so much enhancement for instructors' education. All the yoga-instructor weekends come with CEU's credits, & allow all yogis to participate in a portion of practice certain days/times during the weekend~ anyone can get a bit of helpful information along with a beautiful practice. read more

I was vacationing near Wrightsville Beach. I searched the Internet to find a local yoga center. Wilmington Yoga made the sign up process very easy, they was a $2 charge for the mat. The first class and each additional class is $16 for drop ins. Upon entering the room, I was not greeted by the instructor, it did not feel welcoming. I feel that there should be a travelers special or a "FREE" first class. The location is very neat and clean. read more

Hmmm, so many five star reviews written like advertisements, makes me wonder...... Sorry all sister Yoginis but this place has a serious problem. I have plenty of money to pay for what I want or need, that is not my issue with this studio. From the get go, a tad over priced for a very basic hour 15 class, just by a couple of bucks. Loaner mats will cost you an extra 2 bucks which they expect you to clean after use. Nice facilities but not flawless, Ive been to many, many yoga studios all over the country and overseas. First gripe: attitude, ATTITUDE, ARROGANCE and a zombie follower groove. They expect you to put your purse in a open storage place with no security. No thanks, I brought mine in with me, neatly tucking it next to my mat. The teacher ended up kicking it right next to my head during the middle of class, after she flirted with a buddy or girlfriend over assisting her positions next to me over flirtatiously. Class ends, I put my props away, give the mat back to the front desk, not knowing it was obligation to clean it, I get glares from my lack of knowing what to do there. Go back into the bathroom, most women crossing my path had their heads up so high they couldn't see anyone walking into them. Glares go to all of us going down the hall for no reason at all, weird. Once in the bathroom, I freshened up, changed clothes and noticed something odd. I have an "APP" lets say, that can see security cameras. THERE IS A SECURITY CAMERA IN THE BATHROOM. Oh, joy, more crap, never mind, My money, many friends and employees good graces are going elsewhere. read more

I feel like every time I go I get my own personal experience and there is no judgement--just freedom! I have a 200 hour teacher training certification from a well-known corporate yoga studio where I practice and did my training in San Diego and wanted to continue with a 300 hour certification. My husband got stationed near Wilmington so I signed up for a 4-day workshop that would count as a module towards this certification. This was the WORST experience with a yoga studio I have ever had. The training started every day with an hour of kirtan (not necessarily bad so I am not including it in my appraisal that this studio deserves 1 star or less, just really not my thing so it bears mentioning). We then started working through the sequences that we would be learning to teach by doing a practice of them ourselves as a group. As a yoga teacher I was shocked at how unsafe and unintelligent the sequencing design was. The receptive rotational movements of the shoulders immediately began to bother my rotator cuff, so I scaled back to avoid any injury. The workshop description had claimed that we would learn 5 sequences. However, upon getting the manual, we were told that we could not teach them anywhere else without paying a royalty for the branded material. It was established in court, and in the court of public opinion, when Bikram tried it that you cannot copyright a yoga sequence. Furthermore, of the 5 sequences, one sequence was 25 minutes long with the other half of the class being to encourage "free flowing" and the other was just a self-guided practice. Sequences are valuable because they take a lot of time, skill and creativity to make. To sell 5 sequences and deliver 3 is fraud. There are many other great yoga studios in town that I have found since this awful experience that actually care about sacred yoga values and offer fantastic and safety sequenced classes. Love this place! After I found out I had a spinal condition my doctor recommended a regular yoga regimen to help me strengthen my back. I wasn't finding my way to my mat even on a weekly basis, but yoga became a part of my everyday when I started a membership at Wilmington Yoga Center. I've studied twice at WYC...once for a kids teacher training, later for 220hour RYT immersion. This studio is top notch in the physical space (clean, spacious, minimal), staff (friendly, helpful), and practice (variety of offerings, times, ability to support every student). As a trainee, part of the course was to observe and take as many classes as possible. It was eye opening and educational to learn so many nuances , see how different teachers work with the energy in the space and the sequence. I also appreciate there are classes offered with both open (changing) sequences) and set (same each time) sequences. Hot classes are truly hot, restorative classes are truly an opportunity to surrender and heal, and ability levels are explicitly stated and adhered to. After training commenced, I attempted to contact one of the teachers asking for a little more information (she really inspired me!) and never received a response which was disheartening, especially as a new graduate. But that doesn't hinder my recommending WYC to friends and family in or traveling to the area. If I still lived nearby, it would be my home studio in a heartbeat! The knowledge level of everyone at WYC is second to none. Every student has the optimal opportunity for practice in a strongly held space, with teachers who effectively instruct while keeping each person safe (physically and emotionally), finding their edge and empowerment! read more

Excellent studio! I was in Wilmington for a very brief respite from feeling land-locked and WYC combined with a little beachtime on Wrightsville gave me just what I needed to face another month before my actual vacation. I attended 2 classes, 1 Hot Level 2/3 which was a little beyond my current, uh, level, but this pretty advanced class was conducted in such a way that I felt completely comfortable with pushing myself a little even if I fell out of the pose, and also to just chill out and not feel pressured to push myself. As much as I try to shut out my competitive instincts in yoga, sometimes it comes up, I felt none of that in this class. Great energy. The next day,(after an outstanding dinner at Port Land - see review) a Sat., I attended the beach yoga class at Shell Island Resort, which was absolutely perfect for how I felt. Gentle, but very focused yoga instruction from Caitlyn experienced on the soft, forgiving sand with the waves of the Atlantic serving as our yoga mix. I should mention that the studio is located above the greatest food coop I have seen since moving to these parts. Raleigh has a lot to learn from Wilmington. read more

I was a regular at Wilmington Yoga for three years. I've lived away from Wilmington for a year now, and have tried studios all over the country, but Wilmington Yoga remains my favorite. For me it strikes the right balance of spirituality and a great, often challenging, workout. Other studios I've been to seem to be more heavily geared towards one or the other. If one class or teacher doesn't appeal to you here, I'd try some others, as each has his or her own unique teaching style. read more

You are never expected to do more than you can and the instructors are always there to help in whatever way that you may need. I am an out of towner that has owned a beach house in Wrightsville for over 20 years. I finally decided to try some yoga during my beach vacays here and I am SO happy that I chose Wilmington yoga center. The staff are extremely friendly and kind. The prices are reasonably--I especially love that they have an option for out of towners. The Kunga hot yoga is an awesome workout that will always leave you sweat drenched and tired. I was impressed. They have a very small bathroom/shower area. Only 3-4 stalls + 2 showers. There are no lockers, only cubbies that are totally open and not sealed/closed. Luckily the staff desk is right in front of the cubbies, so hopefully that's enough to shy away anyone untrustworthy. They have a small selection of retail items. In my opinion they need to have more sales in order to circulate their product quicker and get new exciting items more frequently. The same exact items will sit int he store for months and months. The ONLY experience I didn't like at Wilmington yoga-- But I went to one of the super easy classes with my mom. She's not big into yoga and wanted to only try the easiest one. It was full of people much older (ages 50 and up), and the teacher yapped away endlessly about her beliefs. But at one point during the class, I was in the middle of a stretch and she came over to me and loudly said 'i think you have scoliosis'...because one of my shoulders was apparently 'sitting lower' than the other in this pose. I was offended and couldn't believe she would so openly say that. I understand that yoga teachers would like to know details like that in order to try and help you practice yoga to your fullest potential..But I still don't think this was appropriate. Even if I DID have scoliosis (which I do not), the yoga teacher(s) should leave it up to their practicers to inform them (if they so wish), instead of assuming or directly asking them. And mind you this was the first time i had met the lady. It may have been different if I had taken her class many times and she was more familiar with me. But this was not the case. This teacher is older (my guess is 55 or older) she is thin and has short hair. read more

It has a surprisingly beautiful setting looking over the tops of trees in the rear of what from the outside appears to be like any other strip mall. WYC is amazingly well-equipped with all the extras that enable assists, support, relaxation and even "fun" for kids of all ages. If you want to sweat it out in a hot power class, restore and meditate, focus on alignment, practice on the beach...you name it, WYC has the richest range of classes anywhere I've researched or visited, taught by highly qualified, warm and friendly instructors.
