Diners...this site contains some info from the old Windbag. The new restaurant doesn't hold a candle to what it was! It is now nothing special. Very loud music, no buffer to cut the noise. I was hoarse from talking to my friends. Self seating is a real disappointment..very low class. Now for the food...nothing special. Even the "special" wasn't special. Only pub food. What we had was sorta good. The salad was good. The waitress was nice. Overall...not good. This was my second time there & I will resist going there again. read more

This place has the worse service!! Went in on 03/4/18 And not certain why but we were not waited on we sat ourselves. I have heard they treat their staff bad and it seems to show in the service. Food was so-so. We had fish and chips (fish was fried in very thick batter), BLT with avocado (avo was brown), and each of the children's menu options. The grilled cheese wasn't a grilled cheese (IMO), chicken tenders and Mac-n-Cheese. The best part was the kids Mac-n-Cheese. Service was horrible. We assume the waitress was new and/or training. Grabbed a cheese burger, fries and a beer. Burger was juicy and well seasoned. Fries were good, but I felt like I got an unfair portion of over cooked ends and bits of fries. When I treat myself to fries, it's a bummer to get a lot of remnant pieces instead of a full portion of fries. To be fair, I could have complained and I suspect they would have offered more fries. But I tend think this is a detail restaurants can readily see when they plate a meal. Beer was cold and local. Atmosphere leans a little more toward "bar" than pub/saloon, but I enjoyed this stop in Helena. Hit the spot. read more

We were passing through Helena and wanted to eat at a local place. We picked a winner! Hubby and I had 2 different local brews and weren't disappointed. Additionally, The food was great! Burgers were perfect! Buffalo wings hit the spot! The rock crab mac n cheese was rich, cheesy and tasty. A draw back - my 11 year old wasn't a fan of the grilled cheese as I believe they used cheddar cheese. I'll give them a pass as he is a picky eater. Spring was our waitress. She was friendly and fast considering she was assigned areas on opposite sides of the restaurant. Wonderful remodel! Place is alive with such positive energy. Everyone was so inviting and friendly. We ordered appetizers. The Brothel Bites were amazing. We will definitely be ordering them again. The BBQ chicken wings (bone-in) were tasty and full of meat. The nachos weren't so impressive, but the other items made up for them. We did order the funnel cake fries. This was also a great shareable and enjoyable item to order with a group. Overall, a great experience. I can't wait to return! read more

Once you get over the name of the place, you'll discover that the food here is exceptional. I'm always ordering the Buffalo Chicken Salad (I think that's the name, or something close to that).....and have also tried their steaks, burgers, other salads, chicken and fish entrees. Every time, the food is amazingly delicious and fresh. I think this is my number one place in Helena. The service is casual and the atmosphere is kind of what you make it...but I love that it still has that historic Helena feel to it. It's spacious and usually the wait, if any, isn't too long. The food is usually really quick to arrive so that balances out any time you have to wait. Oh, and the mashed potatoes are so good, I wish I was a mashed potato. read more

I went here with a friend, both of us moved to Helena about 7 months ago from different big cities. We have both struggled to find decent food in Helena and after several friends recommended it we gave Windbag a try. We both got burgers, which are all in the $11-12 range. Their dinner entrees are all $20-30. The side salad that came with my friends meal looked really fancy and delicious and she enjoyed it. The potato bacon soup I got as my side wasn't so great, it tasted grainy and there was a wad of cheese bigger than 2 tablespoons in the middle of it. Both of us felt our burgers were just ok, and we both felt the buns were way too greasy. We both like the burgers at the Brewhouse way more. On the plus, they do have a great wine and beer selection and I ordered the cheapest red at $6/glass and it turned out to be great. Overall just ok food and kind of expensive, but good service and a nice atmosphere. I probably would only go back for a glass of wine at the bar. read more

Really, it's a four and a half, but I can't select that. The burgers are excellent, the fries are top notch, the beer selection is excellent, and the wit staff is great. Since I am in a rut and typically order the burger with a huge slab of green chile on it, I can't really comment about the rest of the menu. That's why I dinged them a half point. Understandable that this is the art walk and downtown is crazy busy but we just had a waitress that forgot our food, came back and blankly asked us if we needed anything and had to remind her we ordered food then we were offered comped drinks so accepted and she forgot those and brought the wrong ones when reminded..... twice. We love the Windbag but this was horrible. We were here for 3.5 HOURS and no one seemed to notice that we weren't leaving. Well we maybe should have walked out but we kept giving her the benefit of the doubt but the rest of the patio turned over 3 times while we were there. Cute place in a neat old building. The menu is extensive with lots of choices. We went on a not-too-busy Monday night and service was adequate. Hubby had the brisket sandwich and ate every bite. I had the fish and chips ... which is touted as one of "Dorothy's Favorites" on the menu. I LOVE fish and chips when it's done well, and I figured if they feature it, it must be something they do well. Not so. The batter for the fish was very heavy and the fish was overlooked so the batter was very thick and hard. I know it was fried and expected it to be greasy, but the thick batter had absorbed way too much grease. By the time I was done picking what was edible of the fish out of the hulls of batter, there was a huge pile of hard, crusty batter on my plate. Came in for the Prime Rib, and am so very glad that I did. I will be dreaming of this Prime Rib for some time to come. It was melt-in-the-mouth delicious. For $27, it was 16-oz served with soup or salad and a side. I picked the mashed potatoes which were pretty damned good as well. I had a couple local beers with my meal, and all told they practically needed to wheel me out I was so full. The Windbag isn't much to look at on the inside, but the staff was friendly and the Prime Rib was amazing, so I have no complaints. It was also located on a very charming little walkway that helped me appreciate Helena's charm just a little bit more. read more

The service has been TERRIBLE here the last few times I've been. For example, a friend of mine waited over 30 minutes to have the waitress just get her drink order and then proceeded to run everyone's card one at a time instead of collecting them all at once! Fried pickles were good. Lots of pickle since they were spears. Rest of the food was bland at best. House salad was bagged greens with a couple of other things thrown on it and lots of croutons and the dressing was bland. Buffalo macaroni and cheese was bland. Atmosphere is very loud. Went to windbag and had their famous prime rib sandwich which was a giant piece of prime rib on a bun. It was very difficult to eat because the rib was too big for the bun and difficult to bite through. The bottom bun was very soggy because of the meat when it came out, I couldn't even pick it up so I just took of the bottom bun. The fries were very thick and not crispy. read more

Went there on two subsequent weeks. First time we waited for over an hour and watched groups that came in get seated even though their whole party wasn't there (ours was and it's one of their rules). Manager was very dismissive. Went back a week later only because someone bought a gift card for us and we had to go there to pick it up. I asked 4 times for the card. Finally the (same) manager came back and told us it wasn't there, like she was accusing me of already picking it up and now asking for another one. Clearly an employee stole it. She reluctantly re-issued it for us. Won't be going back. Food is just average anyway. read more

The staff are nice, but the food is pretty bleh. This is not to say it's bad, but the $26.95 seafood medley had three shrimp (which were good--but it's hard not to do shrimp well) and several scrawny (bay) scallops that were fishy and not at all sweet. We also got the ahi tuna sandwich, cooked rare. They should have gone with a thinner piece of high quality tuna, but instead it was thick and flavorless. I visited my friend from Great Falls and traveled to Helena for a day trip... visiting from Northern California where food is everything. Our server Kayla was INCREDIBLE and gave fantastic recommendations for a Basil Elderflower Martini and literally one of the best seafood dishes I've ever had. The Cajun Tuna sandwich was so amazing that I got a to go order for lunch tomorrow. It's a moist tuna steak sandwich that made me so sad when I finished it. I got the rock Mac and Cheese and soup and beet. Beer was cold and service good, but the food was half as big as previous visits and the bowl of soup was 1/2 to 1 inch deep in a big square bowl. Maybe the cooks were cutting the portions for personal reasons, since it was July 3,and probably not the regulars, but overall a good experience. We were visiting from out of state and went there with our friends. We were told the wait would be 20 minutes but it was more like 40. Once at our table our service was not the greatest. Our server, Brooke, seemed distant and short with us. When I wanted to order a fish dish she stated curtly that they did not have fish. After returning to take my order we did not see her until after the first plates arrived. Every few minutes we would get two more plates causing the first people to be served to have to politely wait to eat so as not to be rude. Brooke never once asked how we were doing or how the food was. Probably said less than ten words the entire time. On a nice note the food was very good. Nice portions and not too pricey. I will say this. We had 8 people and it was moderately crowded. I'm giving this 3 stars because of the food and not the service. Don't know if I will return next time in town. read more

I grew up on the Windbag and am horribly disappointed in what it's become now that I came home to visit. It's now Just another crap sports bar with food that pre-frozen or served in cheese, hot spices, or deep fried so they don't really have to cook. Not only that I think the renovations are just ugly n not in keeping with the original Windbag. This restaurant was always hugely successful I don't think this change was for the best. A very sad day as One of the best places in Helena died. read more
