Dear Hospital Administration and Patient Relations, I am writing to make a formal complaint regarding the care and treatment of my sister, **Jennifer Bowers**, who is currently a patient at Detroit Receiving Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. I am extremely concerned about the repeated treatment Jennifer has experienced while under the care of your facility. Jennifer has significant limitations and requires assistance with certain aspects of her personal care. She has reported several incidents that raise serious concerns regarding her dignity, basic care, responsiveness to her needs, privacy, and the manner in which she has been treated by members of the nursing staff and PCAs. Jennifer first contacted me and informed me that she had been left sitting in her own urine for approximately **one hour and twenty-two minutes** without receiving assistance. I was extremely concerned and immediately contacted the hospital to address the situation. When I attempted to identify the staff members responsible for her care, I discovered that there was **no information written on the board in her room identifying her nurse, PCA, or other staff members responsible for her care**. This left Jennifer without knowing who she was supposed to contact or ask for when she needed assistance. I contacted the hospital and requested to speak with the nurse and the PCA assigned to Jennifer's room. During this process, I spoke with a PCA named **Tink**. I specifically asked Tink for the name and contact information of the **charge nurse** and requested an opportunity to speak with the charge nurse so that I could formally address my concerns. However, I was **never provided with the charge nurse's information**, and I was **never given the opportunity to speak with the charge nurse**. Approximately **four hours passed**, yet I still did not receive the requested information or an opportunity to speak with the charge nurse regarding these serious concerns. In addition, Jennifer has repeatedly reported being hungry between meals and requesting snacks or something additional to eat. On one occasion, she repeatedly asked staff for something to eat and waited approximately **40 minutes** while continuing to ask for assistance. She was repeatedly told or led to believe that someone would bring her something, but no food was brought to her, and eventually she gave up asking. The following day, Jennifer asked her RN whether there was anything available for her to eat because she was hungry. At first, the nurse indicated that she did not think there was anything available. However, after checking, the nurse was able to find and bring Jennifer something to eat. Jennifer reports that this situation continued. She repeatedly requested snacks between meals because she was very hungry, but her requests were often ignored or not answered. One incident in particular was extremely upsetting to Jennifer. At approximately **2:19 a.m.**, Jennifer woke up and observed a male RN caring for another patient. Jennifer states that she watched as the other patient requested items such as graham crackers, Jell-O, juice, coffee, and additional snacks, and the nurse repeatedly brought those items to that patient. Jennifer states that she also requested something to eat and asked whether snacks were available. At one point, the other patient even asked the nurse if he could bring Jennifer something. According to Jennifer, **nothing was brought to her**, while the other patient continued receiving food and snacks throughout the night. Jennifer felt that she was being treated differently and that her needs were being ignored. Jennifer is also extremely upset about an incident involving her privacy and dignity. Jennifer has explained that she sometimes does not wear clothing while lying in bed because she becomes very hot. She states that members of the nursing staff and PCAs were aware of this. Jennifer had someone come to visit her, but she states that no one informed her that she had visitors before they entered the room. As a result, her visitors came into the room and saw her naked. Jennifer was extremely upset and embarrassed by this incident. Jennifer also described an incident in which a PCA was cleaning her but did not properly cover her to protect her privacy. Jennifer asked the PCA to pull the privacy curtain or otherwise make sure that people could not see her exposed. Jennifer states that the PCA responded by saying, in substance, that no one could see her. Jennifer explained that this was not the point. She was concerned that someone, including a male staff member or another person passing by, could see her exposed. Besides that as for as my care was still top level. I even like the doctor team, they was so nice to me and they seem so concerned about my care. The night I was admitted I hadn't anything to eat all day, the kitchen was closed but the aid gave me some graham crackers and she wasn't stingy with them, she gave me like 12 of them to satisfy me till morning. I was very impressed with their ordering system where you can order your food through an app on your phone, and you put in your times for each meal. Everything was perfect plus they said it was chef prepared, it went way beyond what I expected. Every meal was good. I have pics to show. I was being prepared to go to a therapy place, this was the first time I ever prayed to God to let my insurance authorize it 3 days later , so I could get a breakfast omelet before I leave I have never wanted to stay in the hospital but I prayed and he granted, in actual my insurance didn't approve til four days later.

Luckily I had my own private room and my husband even got to stay with me and they gave him a pull out couch. The rooms were just like a regular hospital room and were cleaned daily. The second time I came thru the emergency it looked updated. The floors were different and the walls were painted a different color. Everyone was pleasant and nice.
