It initially opened in September 2015, closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and reopened by new management company, SCN Hospitalty. The venue is known for its capacity of around 1,000 people and its ability to accommodate diverse musical genres. Recently went to my first concert here. Nice space, nicely decorated up top. Great sound quality, lighting was great. However, I'd probably never come here again during the summer months. It was 96 degrees outside, this is an indoor venue, it was a sold out show of over 700 people, and there is no A/C in the venue. People were absolutely miserable, I watched multiple people leave the show early because they passed out or were having some other medical issue from the intense heat. It was difficult to even breathe during the event. 3 bands went on stage and every one of them mentioned how ridiculously hot it was. How this is even allowed and not a health risk is crazy to me. Wasn't enough bar staff to keep up with the amount of people, especially cause everyone wanted/needed water, merch stands were set up in spots that made it even more difficult to move around the space. Just poorly set up. Only a few tables and chairs, so people who were having issues with the heat either needed to go downstairs to where the bathrooms were or leave the venue just to get some relief. It's too bad cause it really is a nice venue, but there's no way I'd go again during the warm months.

There are some tables in the bar area and less crowded standing room with TVs showing the stage if you dont want to be in the main stage area. The main floor has some limited seating on bleachers on either side which is a nice touch. I also like that there is a coat check downstairs by the bathrooms for no additional cost (with a tip jar). The capacity is probably around 1000 people. However, as much as I enjoy my time here whenever I come, I do have some legitimate concerns. This is a very warm venue with seemingly no central air and minimal ventilation, so it gets hot quickly and I can't imagine how much worse it must feel in the summer. There is a small gated area you can access outside for some freah air if there is space. I also have observed security staff turning a blind eye to issues and accepting bribes from patrons, so concert safety could absolutely be improved at this venue.

It wasn't just your typical bar menu either.... there were options like basil flat bread, and baked buffalo ravioli (which was heaven). The bartender was great and really knowledgeable too. I hadn't been back since 2016ish and forgot some of the magical elements of the Bug Jar. Living room on the ceiling, the flying bug, great staff, electric environment, and super welcoming to everyone, to name a few. My (large, strong) vodka soda was $7 and I sipped while leaning against the wall in the "venue side" of the space. The room itself is truly so small and a 'lil awkward in terms of where to stand, etc. I wasn't there on a particularly crowded evening but I imagine, as other reviewers have said, it doesn't hurt to arrive early if it is a band you truly care about. This venue does so much to support local musicians and the whole scene in Rochester. Getting out and supporting the local scene is more critical now than it has been, and I am sad I had done such a terrible job practicing what I preach post-pandemic. For years, I had no issues--until one of the security guards, an older light-skinned man with dreadlocks who has worked there forever, began targeting me for no reason. On multiple occasions he acted aggressive and confrontational toward me, even though I never raised my voice or reacted negatively. The last incident was the worst. He disrespected me in a way no customer should ever experience, threatened to "f** me up,"* and had me banned despite the fact that I never did anything to him. His hostility seems to stem from the fact that he doesn't like someone I happen to associate with--someone who also never disrespected him. What makes this even more concerning is that the owner appears to allow this type of behavior. I've seen this guard act out for years, and instead of correcting it, it feels like it's been encouraged. Many people I know have had negative experiences at this bar, and some have even lost their lives due to the environment created when drug activity is allowed inside. I've spent thousands of dollars here over the last 17 years, and never have I been disrespected the way I was by someone who is supposed to ensure customer safety. I considered speaking to the owner directly, but based on what I've witnessed, I truly believe she condones this behavior from her staff. After nearly two decades of loyalty, I can confidently say I will never return.
