I've just started studying with Sifu Ken ( about 3 weeks) and the first lesson was demonstrably different than previous attempts at Wing Chun and akido. How? Despite there being a range of experience levels in the class, Sifu Ken and the more experienced couldn't have been more welcoming and within the first five minutes have you actually learning. I'm still very happy to be training at Wing Chun Dynamics. Sifu Ken is an excellent instructor. The more you are willing to put your time and energy into the system, the more time and energy Sifu Ken will put into you. For example, I had a business trip abroad in February. I told Ken that I'd be looking to train at other Wing Chun schools while abroad. So for a few weeks beforehand, he made sure that I was getting extra attention and focus to get me ready to touch hands with another school. Again in May 2012, I told him that I would be traveling to Seattle to participate in a competition. Sifu Ken spent a great deal of time preparing me for that competition (came home with gold & silver medals, btw). In anticipation of another competition in a few weeks, Sifu Ken has been giving up a lot of time on weekends and Friday nights in order to provide extra training to those of us competing. All of this with no additional cost besides my regular tuition. As long as I was willing to commit to participating and practicing, Sifu Ken was willing to commit to providing training and instruction. Sifu Ken also attempts to foster a really fun environment. We have regular events where families and friends are invited to have some food and enjoy some merriment all within the context of building the Wing Chun family. There's the annual summer picnic, holiday parties, and a few others. Of course, learning Wing Chun is still at the center of all of this. The class structure has changed slightly in my 1+ year here. But that's because there has been a growth of students (which is excellent). The classes are all still great work outs for the mind and body. The great thing about this system is that the workouts are as tough as they were when I first started. They are just differently tough. Sifu Ken is a seemingly endless well of knowledge when it comes to fighting and Wing Chun. Sifu Ken has very clear and unique understanding of WingChun system and decades of teaching experience. There is no lack of training techniques and you learn new things from every class. The culture is very friendly, relaxed but also hardworking. The class is very inclusive for different levels and good mix of different techniques and practice. On and off, I had over 9 years of experience learning Wing Chun. Prior to training with Sifu Ken at Wing Chun Dynamics for the past 3 years, I trained at another Wing Chun school in the same (Yip Man) lineage in San Francisco. I picked Wing Chun out of all martial arts because as a tiny woman I believe this is the most effective technique for self-defense and protecting myself in life-and-death situations. It also helps me develop physical and mental power. Wing Chun forms and techniques may not be as entertaining to watch as many other martial arts because they focus on effectiveness, not prettiness. At Wing Chun Dynamics, Sifu Ken emphasizes the importance of balancing yin and yang. The training covers power, dynamic tension, breathing, foundation, footwork, structure, angle precision, forms, wooden dummy and a lot more. What I've found the most impressive about Sifu Ken is thanks to his engineering background, he is very skilled at explaining complex Wing Chun techniques in an analytical way, often by using diagrams and props, followed by demonstrations of effective techniques and student partner drills. This may be very hard to find in other schools. Sifu Ken has helped me understand Wing Chun is a life-long martial art--you can learn to become better every day. Traditional Hong Kong Wing Chun schools don't have structured classes or curriculums. That means there is no hand-holding for new students, who are to learn as much as they can by learning from more senior students. Wing Chun Dynamics has structured curriculums to help students advance from one level to the next. This is not a commercialized school. Students here don't care to have belts or sashes to show others which level we're in. They care about techniques, work-out, and being able to kick some butt on the street if they have to. To learn the cool stuff, students need to first learn the basic techniques. If you think you can pay to learn wooden dummy or chi sao on Day 1, this is not your place. Sifu is keen on building a Wing Chun family. At the school, every student is expected to help each other to advance. Outside of classes, we have events and parties for interested students to get together. A bonus point is that Sifu Ken encourages students to participate in competition to gain experience. Training with Sifu Ken Chun has been interesting and fun. Interesting how, well Sifu Ken teaches in a way where traditionally you have to find out the meaning in each exercise. Sifu Ken explains why and how it is better. I find Sifu Ken's knowledge very insightful. The fun part, most of us are usually stressed from work or worry, the training and the drills Sifu Ken teaches us are really practical. I've been training here a little over a month now and I like the small class sizes because the instructors can be more attentive to my needs. Since the class is geared towards older students (age wise), my comfort level is high as I get to learn with people who are generally the same size / age as I am. Most schools only train for about 45 mins because they have many classes throughout the day. Not here though, it is primarily 1 class and it lasts for 1.5 hours. In that time period you can learn a lot and also break a sweat as the instructors push you to do more than you normally would. With modern technology, the monthly tuition grants you access to online videos to help you memorize and practice the forms on your own time. If you are eager to learn Wing Chun, this is the school for you, but you'll only be as good as the effort you put into it. read more
