Having tried their food ever since they opened their very first truck around 2013, I've been a fan ever since. And hence the name "hefty" means you are going to get a hefty amount of food that will undoubtedly fill you up. One very cool thing is that they're locally owned (out of Sacramento) and serve at many major events. This includes being at Golden 1 Center, FoodieLand, SactoMoFo, California State Fair as well as offering their truck at weddings, festivals, caterings, charities, and corporate events. I ended up eating here after checking out the all-new "Citrus Heights Food Truck Plaza" (off of Auburn Blvd/Twin Oaks Ave) which debuted in July 2026. Much to my delight, I parked in the small dedicated lot and proceeded to check out several other food trucks before settling with Hefty Gyros. As for the menu itself, it is simple yet very effective. They offer a variation of pitas (falafel for the vegetarians as well as chicken & beef/lamb), rice plates, fries (available in plain, Cajun, or Greek), hummus, and Baklava. Drinks are your standard canned soft drinks as well as a lemonade-strawberry beverage; perfect for the hot days. Since I arrived on an empty stomach (which was during the evening on Saturday 8/15/2026 at 6:00pm), I went with their "Mixed Rice Plate". This monstrosity comes fully loaded with both chicken and gyro meat over brown basmati rice, side of salad, and hummus spread in two pita breads. I complete my meal with one of their "Lemonade-Strawberry" drinks. After making my payment, I was handed a small pager (that would beep when my order was ready). In less than 5 minutes, my food was ready. And since I was talking with the owner/manager for a few minutes while telling him how legit their food has been over the years, he even throws in a complimentary "Baklava" to enjoy! Once proceeding to the cozy seating area (which was well-shaded) for maximum enjoyment, I opened the container as this packaging was loaded with pure deliciousness. And the weight was indeed hefty as this more than likely weighed in at nearly 1 lb! They did not skimp on the meat while the sauces were freely flowing while covering the salad, rice, and fries. Even as hungry as I was, I had to have my lady help finish this plate. All in all, this mixed rice plate hit all the high notes for me; savory, filling, and very delicious. I will agree it was never the place that made you feel great afterwards, and everyone knew the magic wore off after a few bites. One of my friends who grew up here with me was in town and suggested Kiki's, which felt like an odd choice since neither of us had been in years. After a few beers I entertained the idea. A lot of their locations have closed, but the one on Northgate, the one we used to hit throughout high school and college, was still standing. The menu looks different now, more customizable and cleaner. I ordered a small OG Kiki's fries with ranch and mango habanero, a guilty pleasure wing flavor, and I was honestly surprised by how good it was. It came out fast, just like you hope at a place like that, and the service was good. It is not inventive or stunning or anything like that, but it does the job. If you are craving it, then you are craving it. It even feels like the quality is better than it was back in the day, so maybe downsizing their footprint was the right move and they are focusing on getting things right.
