Garry is one of the most friendliest people we have met in NYC and we literally felt a positive experience just by walking in here and looking at history. The store is amazingly pretty with different styles and looks. We decided to get some dragon plates as a new beginning. After coming back from China and been moving around so much we wanted to decorate our house with the traditional Asian style plates. So we checked this spot out. Prices were super reasonable and honestly felt like I was getting something that I want to last with me for forever. This little family shop has so much rich history and feels cozy. The entire family (husband, wife, and grandma) are on the shop floor and eager to speak to guests. It reminds me of my own family and my mom's shop. The family is super helpful in helping you find a gift that's right for you and they're very knowledgeable about their store's inventory. The selection of earrings is quite extraordinary -- there are beautiful ceramic and porcelain earrings with all types of traditional East Asian designs. I bought three because I couldn't decide which ones I wanted. I also bought a much needed soup spoon. Everything is reasonable priced and of good quality. Anyone who's ever been on one of my (in)famous walking tours knows that my favorite shop in all of NYC is Wing On Wo & Co. I stumbled across it six years ago and stepping inside instantly brought me back to my childhood, evoking vivid memories of my grandmother and her love of all things Chinese -- from lacquered furniture, to Ming trees, to tiny porcelain figurines of Confucius and Sun Tzu. In the years since, I've gotten familiar one of the wonderful owners, Gary, and I've bought everything from the painted lanterns that hang in our living room to the tiny lucky cat figurine I keep in my bag. I've seen the area gentrify even as Wing On Wo's storefront and beautiful window displays have remained relatively unchanged for more than a century, like a magical porthole that transports you back in time and memory. It is a place that is singular in all of New York. If it ever goes, it'll take a significant chunk of my heart with it. read more

Tourist Trap and Not a Non-Profit My experience with Wing on Wo started with an in-kind donation (pre-COVID) to this "non-profit" on behalf of my best friend's birthday. I visited this shop and non-profit to see what this is about. Typical ABC discrimination I bought a few ornate plates, because I truly did like them. As I was next in line for the register. The middle-aged woman (presumably the mom) glanced at me and told the white woman next to me go IN FRONT OF me. Very surprised for a business that prides itself on its website for their Chinese-American political activism. It is exactly like an American-Born Chinese (ABC) going to a Chinese eatery gets served AFTER white tourists who just came in. The middle-aged man (likely the dad) at the next register rang me up and apologized for her wife's behavior. His wife did not apologize and defending her choice. Souvenir Shop, Not an Antique Store Only a few select items are antiques. I later noticed the plates I got were sold at a nearby Chinese supermarket and tiny ceramicware shop owned by a local pau pau and gong gong (Cantonese for grandma and grandpa). Obviously, the store thrives because of its decent on social media and mislabelling itself as a non-profit. I want Chinese-American family-owned businesses to survive in this volatile economy, but this experience failed my expectations. read more

Having the distinction of being the oldest store in Chinatown dating back to the 1920's, W.O.W. surely qualifies as a destination for visit whether you are a resident of the neighborhood or a visitor from out-of-town. W.O.W has an amazing collection of porcelain antiques that would appeal to anyone who loves and collects heirlooms or period pieces. From the beautifully crafted china to the feng-shui figurines, the selection is exhaustive. The staff is extremely friendly and fluent-English speakers. They are always very helpful in helping visitors pick out a souvenir or a period piece that is perfect for their homes. Wonderful shop in Chinatown on Mott Street. I've been coming here for years. My mom loves porcelain items from Asia, so this is one of her fave spots. They offer goods from both China and Japan. They have so many varieties of individual bowls and serving ware. They also have beautiful vases and planters for indoor or outdoor plants. I bought a vase for my aunt last year and she loves it. Lamp bases and other figurines too. A good spot to visit for gifts. I'd like to point out that the owner is so nice too. Always helpful and welcoming. read more

Also, there are also new modern handcrafted patterns that can blend into the modern aesthetics. You can really tell the quality of these porcelain items. Another spot dedicated to preserving the original culture of Manhattan Chinatown. This spaces doubles as an antique shop and community space for Chinese people to showcase their artwork and preserve their cultures. I've been here as a customer and event attendee. Events are geared toward discussing gentrification and cultural relics of Chinese immigrants. The shop has done a lot to preserve space and create new cultural avenues. The antiques consist often of tea sets which are fairly priced. These aren't your dollar store tea sets, and they tell a story. WOW also boasts community fellowships which enable local artists to expand on their artwork and host events in the space to talk about art, culture, and social issues affecting the Chinatown community like gentrification. My favorite store in Chinatown. I discovered it in the 70's when I was living in Chinatown, trying to learn to cook like the locals, and needed bowls and chopsticks. I still have some of that lovely porcelain, and still stop by for a new bowl or cup. What a lovely store. They sell big serving pieces and vases as well as tiny pieces. Bought some little blue and white rice bowls for my grandson...he likes his food "not to be touching each other" and serving everything in its own bowl is perfect! Also all kinds of plain and fancy chopsticks. Porcelain lions. Some inexpensive necklaces and charms. The store has been there since 1925! Super nice owners. A must. read more

This store is the hidden gem of Chinatown! The oldest store in the neighborhood, you can find old-school Chinatown things like porcelain pottery and chopsticks, but they also have a bunch of new things like handmade silkscreen tote bags and t-shirts! This is a unique, fourth-generation owned shop that is well worth the visit. I've lived in NYC all my life but just discovered it today - I can't wait to bring out-of-towners here for the real NYC experience!
