The blood clot lodged near my thalmus and affected my right leg. After a lot of PT I can walk fairly well despite having a 'dead' foot - the leg and foot are fine but the brain cells that controlled them are dead. Traditional Physical Therapy taught me how to compensate and retrain them. I returned to Tai Chi this January to further my abilities and enhance my balance but I just recently discover an additional unanticipated benifit. After the stroke my meds were changed which included a doubling in the dose of statins. After that, the cramps in my legs had become a nightly occurance - unbearable at times but mostly just something I would just have to stretch out. However, after just a month of Tai Chi (more likely the Qi Gong stretches demonstrated at the begining of each class) the cramps have stopped visiting me each night. I highly recommend Tai Chi for normal healthy people but for us old folk it is a gift.

Rennaissance Wing Chun - Testimonial…read more Written after 30 months of training. If you are looking for a place to learn how to fight, this is it. Your body will get in shape as a by product of training and diet. The instructor is a Master of his time with a broad knowledge of fighting philosophy who will help you understand the elements of fighting and how they are applied in combat situations. This is chiefly a wing chun school but you will also have access to other martial arts such as Sanda, Catch wrestling and Savatte. The purpose is to expose the student to fighting at different ranges to limit the vulnerability of circumstance. There will be bruises, especially on the fore-arms. Part of the "no-pain, no gain" mentality. After a while they feel like badges of accomplishment. Eventually your body will harden and they will become less frequent. Im starting to miss them already. I have met new friends although it feels more like a family. I have lost body fat and gained muscle in areas I have not been utilizing transforming into a more tone and proportionate body. I have learned techniques in self-defense all while maintaining interest and having fun. My pains from past surgeries are a rare occurrence and feel in my physical prime. Most people try the $25 week to check it out, the newbies who are serious in enhancing their combat knowledge tend to be the ones who stick around. I find the potential benefit far out-weighs the costs. I find myself very fortunate to have encountered this opportunity in my life and fore-see years enveloped in this system before losing interest, as there is so much to learn. I have finished the wing chun curriculum and still find myself learning new things while improving my fighting ability. Thanks to Grandmaster Ip-Man for adding to the establishment of this art and teaching it to others where it eventually found its way into our lives. May he be at peace and may we represent him in a good manner.

Since AZ Combat Sports offers new students a free first class, I joined Ms. Official Badass Grace O. in an evening hour-long Muay Thai session of punching, pivoting and sweating. After filling out the necessary paperwork (A form basically saying don't sue them If you get hurt practicing, etc.), I was given a tour, and introduced to many cool and experienced students in BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-jitsu), MMA, and Muay Thai. The class started with some cardio (Jump rope), then moved on to stretching and some muscle strength exercises. Since everyone else was not a newbie, the assistant instructor then gave me an individualized intro class where I learned the basics of punching while the others practiced kicks and punches with a partner. Since I used to take kenpo, a lot of the muscle memory I've retained doesn't fit into the style of Muay Thai fighting, at least where striking and hand movements are concerned. The instructor was patient though as he guided me through the different moves. I have to say I was a little disappointed I didn't get to kick anything today but I understand that you gotta start with the basics if you want to build a solid foundation of skills. Compared to a krav maga class I took a few years ago, I liked the atmosphere here better, and I appreciated the personal instruction. While the krav maga class has you jump right into action, practicing attack scenarios, the Muay Thai class focused more on form so that the punches and kicks you deliver have the most bang for your buck. I'm still debating whether to get back into a more traditional martial arts or more of a combat sport like Muay Thai, but if I do decide to go into Muay Thai this is the place to be!

The classes always go for a full hour with no time wasted getting organized beforehand etc. The student/teacher ratio is appropriate and even with a big class they have enough instructors around so that my kid won't spend most of the class waiting for her turn. APSK is setup so that multiple skill levels can come to class on the same days at the same time. If you have siblings both enrolled they can take class together rather than having to wait through each other's class. APSK teaches the full package. They work life lessons into the program and try to demonstrate proper discipline, responsibility and respect along with defense techniques. My daughter isn't a discipline problem but I still really appreciate the extra help and lessons that have been part of her training. ASPK isn't just a karate class for my daughter. It's a community of role models and friends that she loves hanging out with. They have holiday and birthday parties, they offer after school and summer programs, they interact with parents, and they are the best options if your looking to get your kids (or yourself) into martial arts.

There are actually two mats in use in the evenings to accommodate different skill levels. Best of all, there's a really good vibe-people are friendly and really want to help each other learn. I've been mostly taking the morning classes with Jonathan Van Buren, who is an amazing grappler and winner of Fight To Win's 2017 Submission of the Year award for a sick barataplata. He's an incredibly accomplished competitor at a very high level; his matches on FloGrappling or a quick Google search will lead you right to videos of some of his matches so you can see for yourself. As with any skill or sport, sometimes some of the best practitioners aren't always the best instructors. JVB manages to excel at both. I am consistently impressed by the level of detail in his instruction as well as his ability to pinpoint specific areas for improvement with scalpel-like precision. I'm not the most consistent BJJ practitioner and have been known to take extensive time off when life, work, or injuries get in the way. But JVB is always incredibly warm and welcoming, and willing to spend as much time with a brand new student struggling with a basic warmup as he is working with high-level competitors on sharpening their skills. I'm really happy to be able to learn from him and to be part of this team.
