Waiter went over the menu and I got the meatloaf (their most popular dish). Came with mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. Also had a wonderful mushroom gravy. Maybe a better meatloaf than Moms! Everything was really good. Waiter also brought a glad of Merlot which paired perfectly with the meal. So, meatloaf, wine and tip - 55 Swiss francs. About average for that city. Many classic Swiss dishes and, so far, the best Wienerschnitzel I've had in Switzerland!…read more The restaurant is a little tricky to find; upon entering the building, one must ascend a nondescript stairwell and decode a sign, partially hidden behind a plant; the sign points right to the balcony, and points left to an unwelcoming closed door which, for all I could tell, might be a doctor's office or the janitor's closet. Aside from the rough start, the unwelcoming door surprises by opening into a beautiful dining room bustling with activity. There is a stunning antique oven (that is, a fireplace, to keep warm) in the left corner of the room decorated with ceramic tiling to retain the heat, traditional built-in seating, and ornately-carved soapstone pillars. The view out the second-story windows is of Marktgasse, one of the main streets cutting through the middle of town. Most of the patrons in the restaurant were speaking in Swiss German, though I suspect in the middle of summer it might be a bit more diverse with tourists (our visit was in the dead of winter). Spoken English and High German were also observed. We were seated by a waiter who spoke Swiss German and surely also English if pressed. He pleasantly informed us that the restaurant closes in about an hour, implying we shan't stay past that time. That was fine, as we arrived at an odd time (about 1:30 PM) and they have to run a business. We ordered the classic, a breaded veal Wienerschnitzel with fries ("Kalbschnitzel paniertet mit Pommes Frites"). The breading was perfectly crisp and not at all soggy or moist, and with just the right amount of savory; one could taste the butter used for frying without the dish tasting or appearing oily; and, the veal was soft enough to cut with the side of my fork. This is, so far, the best Kalbsschnitzel I've had in Switzerland. The French fries were ample and tasty, once decorated with a few ketchup packets. The service was very good, the prices were what you'd expect for authentic Swiss food in the middle of a city. I am looking forward to visit again soon to try some of the other Swiss specialities.

Sounds like an American Fraternity Why only four stars, ridiculously expensive tour at 250 a person but the wine was all you can drink and pretty selective Guild only ... as to food that was four stars at best and small portions. Service waiter was aloof. Worth a look as dine on your own, skip the Viking and come DIY for a better a cheaper experience and of course select what you what and for far better value, maybe not get to try the guild wine ?

Perfect plating of delicious food. As we were eating I said "I wonder if I get a second portion this year as the prices haven't increased"...I wanted to savor every taste of veal and mushrooms in that gravy and tried to hold back on the potatoes. And then our server stopped by and ask if I was ready for the second serving. A big grin filled my face. The BEST Geschnetzeltes in Zuich!!! One can read my last review as we do not waiver on our thoughts about the restaurant, the service, the food and the atmosphere. Perfection in all aspects. Recommend booking in advance. And yes, one again Veltlinerkeller exceeded our expectations. The restaurant was totally full with locals which is always a great sign. The staff was the same which also says something these days. Service It was pretty early when we stepped in, so they informed us how much time we had to eat before reservations set in, which was great and efficient, and also no problem at all. The staff was very friendly and checked up often on our meals. Food We ordered the pumpkin soup and smoked duck breast with deer liver salad to start. The whole meal was bursting with flavor complexities that i couldn't really place or imagine. The pumpkin soup was creamy, savory, spiced perfectly and not overly salty. The smoked duck was also not overly salty, and you could taste the smokiness of the duck, while the skin of the breast wasn't chewy. The deer liver was seared, leaving the insides relatively raw. I had never had this, so i had to try it. If you like liver, you'll love this meal. The salad and portwine cranberries really balanced out the meat, mellowing out the overall meal. I had the boar, which was seared and very slightly overcooked for my personal taste, but it didn't stop me from clearing out the whole plate. I would have licked it, if it were considered acceptable. Mine came with brussel sprouts puree, and spätzli. The textures and flavors were so balanced and delicious, i wish there was a restaurant similar to this back home. My friend ordered the deer filet medallions with red cabbage and i felt that the meat was perfectly cooked - not dry and tough (not saying the boar was dry or tough at all, it was just slightly cooked more than my usual preferences). The veggies on both meals were wonderful. The brussel sprouts melted in your mouth and didn't taste hard or crunchy. The red cabbage was soft, with lots of crunch and texture in the middle. I'm honestly not sure what the red fruit was on the side, but it might have been the gin plums from the menu from other meals, but man were they boozy and fantastic. I would have eaten all of both meals if i wasn't on vacation and i knew i was going straight home to stew in my food coma. Lastly, i ordered two cheeses, which the server (maybe owner? I wish i had clarified) asked if i had space in my body for it and I'll be damned if i didn't try all the cheeses available. He asked if i liked cow, sheep, or goat, in which i said surprise me and he gave me a cow and sheep one. The cow I've reminded me of triple cream cheeses -soft in the middle and a little creamier on the outside. The flavor and textures were both apparent, but not overwhelming. I wish i had asked for the names of the cheeses i tried, but i wouldn't have been able to "hear them" without writing them down. The other was a sheep cheese, which was very pungent and very creamy and i loved. This was all paired with grapes, pear, and dried figs - a perfect blend of all flavors. Overall, I'm so glad I stumbled upon this restaurant and if you want to try flavorful foods and a wonderful atmosphere with excellent service, try this restaurant. It's really delightful.
