Unfriendly and Hostile Behavior When we ordered drinks, the female server practically threw the beer mat onto our table, displaying an outright lack of courtesy. (1. She used two beer mats to carry our used napkins into the tray, as though we were disgusting or unworthy of respect (see below illustration). This happened even after I had tipped for my part of the meal. (4. With a reservation made the same day through Open Table, we did not have any wait upon arriving to be seated. The service was nice, and the food was good. The prices were fair for the portion sizes. I would recommend Wirtshaus for a good, traditional German meal. Wirtshaus Zum Straubinger has a nice selection of drinks, including German beer. The menu is mostly traditional German food but does have some lighter options. I had a fantastic side salad with my meal - the Pork Knuckle, which I was really excited to try and wanted to order at least once on our trip. This was the only time I tried the dish, but it was delicious; the outside was crispy and the inside was meaty. I would highly recommend this, and the dumplings that came on the side were good too. From the outside, when you come from Marienplatz, it doesn't look like there is an outdoor section. They do have a nice outdoor section in the back, if you prefer outdoor seating. One of the reasons I came here was for their Schweinhaxe. Schweinhaxe is roasted ham hock. It was huge! It came with a crispy skin and juicy meat underneath. Schweinhaxe is a little messy to eat since it's hard to cut through the crispy skin. But it's like bacon. I loved the flavors of the pork. It was doused in dunkle beer sauce. It was a lot of food though. It was very fatty, like all pork, and filled you up quick. The schweinhaxel came with 2 knodels: the potato and the standard dumplings. They were one of the better knodels I've had so far. I mean, that's a tall order since all the Bavarian places had great Knodels. But I think this place had one of the better ones in my opinion. I also tried their Duck. It came with apple red cabbage. Since tasted like red cabbage in some apple juice or something. It gave it a sweet flavor. The duck was nice and succulent. I ate here with a group of friends while we were in town for Oktoberfest. My friend Johannes is from Munchën and recommend we meet him here for dinner. I got the Haxn (crispy pork knuckles) on his recommendation. It was fantastic. It was probably the best meal I had while in Germany. It had just the right amount of crispy cracklings on it. While there we also got a number of beers. I got a Pauliner dunkle. I don't typical drink and am not a huge beer fan, but I actually liked the dunkle quite a bit. Johannes also bought some schnapps for us to try. Again, this was one of my favorite spot I went to for the two weeks I was in Austria and Germany. Really delicious local cuisine! There were so many dishes on the menu that we decided to try it all by ordering the "Meat Feast," which featured roasted duck, meat balls, crispy pork knuckles, and roasted pork on a bed of two different sauerkraut for about €20 a portion. AND, you get a side of two different types of dumplings. I mean, food bonanza! There were 4 of us and we accidentally ordered 4 portions (we meant to order 2 to share between the 4 of us, oops!) so when the food came out it looked like a Thanksgiving meal for a family of 10. We also ordered some Paulaner beer to wash our meat down (When in Munich!). Overall, we ate way too much, but it was excellent. All the meats were tender and flavorful - especially the duck, the crispy pork skin was SO crispy, and the sauerkrauts were both so good. One was more sweet and the other savory, a perfect compliment to all the meats. I loved this menu option because it gave us the opportunity to try each one of these meat dishes all in the same meal! AMAZING pork knuckle. This is the first time I've ever had pork knuckle, but I'm fairly confident this was a good one. So crispy, perfectly seasoned, smoked on the outside, and so tender, melt-in-your-mouth on the inside. My friend and I came here for dinner Tuesday night without reservations. The server told us it would be a 45 minute to 1 hour wait. We saw two people leaving the bar area, and the server at the bar said we could seat ourselves there, so we did! The bartender/server was so sweet and attentive (I think her name was Bea). She quickly gave us a beer recommendation and taster before we had a chance to ask (hacker-pschorr Münchner hell) - we got two rounds of it. She also checked on us regularly throughout the meal, which has been surprisingly rare behavior in Munich. We ordered two dishes to share: pork knuckle and schnitzel. Both great, both filling. The schnitzel was also so perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. I'd been down to come back here again in the week we're staying in Munich. This came as a recommendation from a hotel I stayed at. Traveling alone, I wasn't comfortable going to a beer hall. Just opposite of Eataly, this German restaurant has some authentic eats which feels less touristy. Friendly staff. Greeted me in English and once seated, said I had the table until 8pm....I arrived around 5:30pm. I enjoyed the Straubi Schnitzel which is crispy fried pork cutlet with onions and bacon in the light breading. Served with a tangy potato salad. Enjoyed a cold beer, of course! My wife had a Haxn which was freak'n huge. She finished it all which means it must have been super delicious. The place is good for groups too since they have long tables and benches. We would have probably given this a 4 except for 2 factors. We were at Osterwaldgarten yesterday, and their schnitzel and potatoes was overall more flavorful. Also, after good service and a nice meal, the waiter was very persistent in pretending not to understand when we wanted to round up the bill to 110 euros. This is what our German friends have told us to do, and after 4 days, this is the only time we experienced this type of reaction. He expected us to pay 130 euros for a bill that was 103 euros. This may seem silly to mention, but it left us feeling very uncomfortable after a nice evening. Otherwise, the meat platter was definitely enough for 4 people. We ordered for 2 but it was too much. My favorite was the pork cracklings which were delicious. We also ordered the special pancake for dessert. It was good but a little heavy. We chose to have our first meal of our trip and our first meal in Munich at Wirtshaus Zum Straubinger. This restaurant is fairly close to the main tourist area in the city center and was easy to find. I wanted a more authentic experience and meal while in town and thanks to the many great reviews for this place, that is exactly what I experienced. During our visit a few weeks before the craziness of Oktoberfest, the restaurant was fairly empty when we walked in for dinner around 6 pm on a weekday. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and checked in on us frequently. We sat inside but I wished we had sat outside in the garden since it was such a nice evening. I ordered the roast pork (Schweinebraten) while my friend ordered the half pork knuckle (Schweinshaxn). Both came with two types of dumplings and variations of cabbage salad. I also ordered a Weissbier, or wheat beer. The roast pork was delicious, juicy and tender, and the piece of crispy skin that topped the meat was a treat. The dumplings were heavy and dense but did a great job of soaking up all the pork juices. The pork knuckle can be found all over Munich and this restaurant did a great job on the dish. The portions are large, so come hungry. I especially loved their kraut salad, which was well dressed, balanced and fresh. The restaurant gave off a cozy vibe but did not feel that small. The space is nicely decorated. It feels more like a neighborhood spot than a tourist target. They did have menus in English, which was helpful, but I never felt like this was a place where you would see tour buses roll up. If I had spent more time in Munich I would have made a return visit to try other items on their menu. I highly recommend this place. read more

Every now and again I get an insane craving for Bavarian food. Perhaps it's not quite Oktoberfest yet, but I still can't get "Schatzi schenk mir ein foto" or the thought of washing down heaps of pork with a liter of beer out of my head. Tucked around a corner right at the Viktualienmarkt and the Schrannenhalle, I thought this was just another one of those "hoity toity" German restaurants that only caters to Munich's schickeria. However, after my dinner here, not only did I eat a delicious dessert, but I also ate my words....Wirtshaus Zum Straubinger is great for EVERYONE. I stuffed myself silly with the schweinebraten (a heavenly roast pork) with krautsalat and two types of knoedel, one a kartoffelknoedel and the other a semmelknoedel. Man was that semmelknoedel delicious! The only way I can describe the food here is by telling you to imagine the best Bavarian meal you've ever had....and then try as hard as you can to understand that Wirtshaus Zum Straubinger is probably on par with that. The service was okay. Not amazing, but not too rude either. As far as prices go, my meal itself was not even 12 euro, and that's great for the portion I was given. For those who want a tasty Bavarian dining experience in the city center without too much of the exaggeration (i.e. high prices, rushed/sometimes impolite service, mediocre food, etc.) that one finds in tourist traps, this is the place to go. The indoor restaurant as well as the outdoor beer garden are small but cozy (hint: reservation highly recommended!). The service is alright--sometimes slow but nevertheless friendly. The highlight though is the regional and seasonal food. The salads (we tried Rosa Roastbeef, Gröst'l and Wurstsalat) are all tasty and decent-sized, the soups are comforting and flavored properly, and the bread is fresh. With a Hacker Pschorr beer (one of my favs) to go along with the meal, life's good. read more

I've now been twice to Wirtshaus Zum Straubinger. Both times were with work colleagues. The first time we were a party of 4 and the last was 12. Fortunately the weather was great both times and we were able to sit outside I like their outdoor seating area a lot - especially for a place right in the city! My only complaint it it seems like they are consistently under staffed! The service is very slow. I would recommend ordering your drinks when you are given the menu. The food however is very tasty. It's a nice mix of traditional Bavarian and seasonal offerings. I also really appreciated that when I reserved ahead (for a Tuesday night) I could reserve for outside seating pending good weather. I'm sure I will be back as overall the place is nice. I'll just warn those I'm with that we can't be in a hurry. read more

It went well with our classic Bavarian dinner, which was served to us at our community table by the friendliest waitstaff in all of Munich. They really love their jobs I think, and their traditional clothing outfits completed the evening for us. Special seasonal drinks included Gluevine, which you could order mit schuiss. I opted to add the shot of Amaretto. It was yummy. I ordered cheese spazel. It was very cheesy. The noodles were the perfect firmness. It had crispy bread crumbs on top. It came with a big side salad. My husband had the pork snitzel. It was outstanding. Lightly breaded and crispy. So tasty. If you want a traditional Bavarian meal in a great atmosphere, this place is as good as it gets. Sure the workers are in traditional Bavarian garb, but it is cool. You have a nice mix of people in there with comfortable tables. My wife and I were tired and cold and looking for a nice bite to eat. They all speak English perfectly here and they have English menus. Service was very friendly. We ended up ordering the Meat Feast for Two. If you like hearty food, this is the definition but with a gourmet flare. You get bratwurst, crispy pork hocks, roasted duck, and pork roast. For sides you get two dumplings. One was a religious experience, the bread dumpling. It tastes like a big ball of thanksgiving stuffing. The red apple sauerkraut was one of tastiest krauts I've ever had. The beer selection is solid and delicious. It was the perfect Bavarian meal on our first night in Munich and we will always remember what a great place it was.
