We happened across this place when at the nearby Penzeys so we went in to check it out since I needed some knives sharpened. We met the owner Michelle who is a dynamo and she explained the business, the process, and all of their equipment. I was sold. Two days later I was back with my knives. They can sharpened them while you wait - $4 per knife. I was there maybe ten minutes the whole time chatting with Michelle and her crew - it was quite entertaining. For the past few days, I've had a knife riding around in the back of our car. Not a switchblade, not an Exacto blade, but an honest-to-god Wustof Chef's knife. It's not the best kitchen knife out there, and it pales in comparison to the Shun knives in our kitchen. But when I wield that shiny steel and say "auf Wiedersehen" to my college-era Miracle Blades, I turn into Iron Chef Stina-san! The problem? After a year or so of neglect, it was dull. Dangerously dull. Mr. G gave me the tip that Wisconsin Cutlery was the place to go! So I diligently wrapped my knife in layers of newspaper and finally got around to delivering it to the sharpener's steady hands. He's got a behemoth 36-inch grinding wheel and, in a matter of two or three minutes, my Wustof was good as new! The best part? It only cost me $3. Really? Pay $3 so I don't chop my fingertips off again? Deal. Don't be a rookie like me, however, and ask to charge it. They do accept debit/credit cards, but it's a small business and those fees add up. Bring three bucks and you'll be good to go! There seems to be a great selection of other kitchen supplies, but I didn't take much time to dilly dally in the store today. There's a lot to like about a personally owned business in this economy. I find this store to be my first suggested alternative to a Williams Sonoma or BBB. The pricing is better in some respects, and you aren't buying a lot of shiny crap with some random name on it. You don't need Rachel Ray's pots. She doesn't even use them. Great selection of quality knives and pans. They're predominantly restaurant grade, and I feel comfortable with using them in my home and work kitchens. They also do knife sharpening. A lot of the other items you might need, from spatulas to piping tips, are available here as well. I've been meaning to get my Victorinox chef knife sharpened for some time and I stumbled across Wisconsin Cutlery searching for professional sharpeners. I'm so glad I did because I end up signing up for their knife cutting class! It's a two hour for class for $30 and you'll get 10% off the entire store after the class. I absolutely love Wisconsin Cultery! I happened to of run into this store after visiting Concious Carnivore. The door was open and I heard the sound of knives being sharpened. As I glanced over I saw a huge what I think was a leather wheel and a woman sharpening a knife. It was an amazing sight. So I walked in and there was a over sized bench grinder with more honing wheels. A very large display with various style knives from cheap kitchen knives to very expensive quality steal knives. I ended up purchasing a very nice chef knife. Not only did I get a awesome knife but some knowledge about knives. It's a great store and I only wish this store was in Milwaukee! read more

I brought my son to Wisconsin Cutlery on his 14th birthday for his first knife. (He's going to be a chef.) Lea was *A*mazing! The whole experience was everything I could have hoped for and more, especially since he was picking it out for himself. She first showed him a couple great options, listened to his feedback, and then brought out several more until he settled on a favorite. During this time she also worked with me and my 10 yr old daughter on cutting skills, answered a million questions, and helped a number of other customers. Plus she was having fun doing it! I myself have never had so much fun shopping with my kids. I ended up getting a beginner's knife for my daughter as well, along with several other cool items I wasn't expecting to find. Wow. I learned something that I'm sure many of you already know. A sharpened knife ACTUALLY makes cooking/baking/etc so much easier! And this is best kept secret for that in Madison. This wonderful little store packs a punch regarding its selection, but they also are really knowledgeable about their products. Also, the wonderful owner is extremely accommodating regarding sharpening your own old knifes as well. In a few minutes, he had restored my old (and surprisingly dull... My ideal afternoon is spent dropping off my knives for sharpening at WC&KS ($5 each, usually while you wait) and drooling over the respective inventories of this store and neighboring Penzey's Spices, Vom Fass, Lee's Oriental, and The Conscious Carnivore. I could probably have a significant amount of my paycheck automatically deposited at WC&KS--they have so much stuff that I never knew I needed! HIGHLY DANGEROUS. Very positive experience. Went there to get 4 knifes sharpened. They are the best deal in town at $4 per blade regardless of the size. The only down side is that they use a grinding wheel for their rough grit, but finish by hand sharpening their fine grit. I was a little bit nervous they might take off too much metal (especially since they were nice Japanese blades), but the job was done very nicely and in under 20 mins. read more

Which is unfortunate, in a way, because I love these guys and always come away from my visits extraordinarily pleased. For a dinner party coming up and in need of a couple small items (round brulee molds - used to have dozens, and between moves and breakage, well....needed a couple for an upcoming dinner with friends), the owner promptly got back to me today that the supplier had backordered for a bit and unfortunately, they'd not be in in time for my event. I was very grateful for the owner's conscientious and early call. But beyond this, he didn't merely call to let me know, but suggested I try another place in town who might have what I was looking for. I call this a class act and a long term relationship. FAST, SHARP, CHEAP PRICE, GREAT KNIVES! Got my crappy knives sharpened in 10 min's, $4 a pop. Better than my $200 knife! Going to test her out with my $200 knife - scared about that wheel grinding down too much too, but I'mma let 'er at it (she deserves the chance)! I do a lot of cooking, I buy the best knives I can afford, and I keep them in pretty good shape. I thought I'd give this place a try - NEVER AGAIN. I took in 2 knives that I've had for almost 30 years, and the guy who "sharpened" them took off more metal in a minute than had been removed in 30 years of sharpening at home. CLEARLY this person did not know what they were doing. Basically destroyed 2 beautiful knives. I was heartbroken. And angry. And I will never, ever go there again or recommend them to anyone. read more

I had taken my chef knife to them a couple of times and everytime i did i had to check to make sure he had made the blade straight which each time he sharpened my knife it never was straight so he had to redo it, which eventually wore my knife down to the point where no edge would keep and my knuckles whould hit the cutting board. in 6 months he made a $150 knife useless. when i took my knife back to complain that they ruined it the girl didn't offer me a refund or anything. if you need kitchen supplies or knife sharpening GO SOMEWHERE ELSE read more

I love this little shop. It has a lot of stuff very useful kitchen supplies and the ladies that work there are awesome. But the best part has got to be the knife sharpening. $4 to sharpen my Wustof chef's knife and it is easily sharper then when I bought it. When I was walking out I saw one of the guys from Sushi Muramoto bringing his knives in to be sharpened so you know these ladies know how to sharpen a knife. read more

I brought in a 12" serrated bread knife and asked if it could be sharpened without damaging the serrations. The owner said yes and proceeded to grind off almost all of the serrations. This is not real professional sharpening it's severe grinding. I went in and got a pocket knife sharpened and they took way to much material off my blade and also left a very rough finish on both sides of the blade. I wouldn't complain if it was a kitchen knife or a cheap knife, but a $200 pocket knife needs to be sharped with a bit more care. I don't think I'll be returning here to get my knives sharpened. I'm just going to have to learn to do it myself. I wish I had read these reviews before going in because it looks like someone else had the same thing happen. read more

I stopped by Wisconsin Cutlery to have 8 knives sharpened. It was a pleasant experience. I was warmly greeted as I entered. I dropped off my knives with Jason, who offered to sharpen them right away. Instead, I returned later that day. My knives were ready and waiting and very sharp. The price was very reasonable (and the little knife was free). These people should NOT be able to use the word "Professionally sharpened". They have sharpened my knives twice and both times it was not good. But whatever you do, don't show up on Sunday when they are open with a sign that says 'we sharpen while you wait', because THEY DO NOT sharpen on Sundays, for whatever reason other than the person that sucks at sharpening is too busy. The woman didn't even come out from wherever she was in the back of the store to talk to me face to face, and never even apologized for the inconvenience. There was no one else in the store. read more
