As a chocolate lover, I was excited to try Wiseman House! Took a nice Sunday drive to Hico TX. Probably the best part of Wiseman House is that they offer free samples of their products to try. This is high quality chocolate, so you really have to control yourself to enjoy little bits at a time or you will get a stomach ache like a kid loose on Halloween. I did my research beforehand from their website and through social media to guide my purchase. I came home with: peanut butter meltaways, sipping chocolate, and the 16 piece variety truffle box. On our way to San Antonio from Dallas and deliberately detoured through Hico to stop here and by chocolates for the Grandmas for Mother's Day. Truffles are out of this world but I also found chocolate covered raisins and malted milk balls which are my mother in law's favorite! Had to buy a pecan caramel cluster for hubby as well. We just bought some property in this area and heard lots of great things about this place so we dropped in. First off, the 2 adorable ladies working were so pleasant and helpful it was refreshing. Second, they have so many samples (very generous sizes) that you get to really try a lot to make sure you get what you want. Third, the prices are extremely reasonable. They even have a $5 cooler bag with ice pack they will sell you so your chocolate doesn't melt. Thoughtful and practical and so well priced. Lastly, the little house it's in is decorated with cute stuff that's chocolate related. Stopping in there was such a nice treat that we will make it a regular stop when we are in the area. read more

This historical Victorian house is one of Hico's oldest homes, and is the retail shop of hand made chocolates and toffee made from Wiseman's kitchen located in historical downtown, around the corner. It is absolutely worth the time to stop by and pick up some candies and take a walk through this cute little gingerbread house. The chocolates are superb and they offer samples throughout the store. There are two reasons why someone might find themselves in Hico. The first is to avoid the traffic on I-35. The 2nd is the best handmade chocolate I have tasted since the beginnings of The Sweet Shop (before the tornado of 1999 flattened their production facility). The shop is in a single story Queen Ann Victorian on the north east side of the road. The ladies in the store are knowledgeable and extraordinarily helpful. They are also unusually generous with the samples. I wish more companies would do that. Having tasted the quality of the chocolates, there was no way I was going to leave there without some of my very own! Those samples are the reason I opened up my coin purse and let the dollar bills fly away! The fudge isn't just the average "hand made" fudge one runs into at the mall shops. it was actually cooked fudge, old-fashioned fudge. The toffee was better than any I have ever made. Seriously, the chocolates here are wonderful. The ladies here are awesome and will give you samples of their truffles so you can try before you buy. Seriously, I have NEVER seen a place that does that. So what should you get? The peanut butter meltaways are peanut butter whipped with white chocolate poured into rectangle shapes and dipped in chocolate. Yum. The toffee is completely covered in either milk or dark chocolate and crusted in almonds. Yum. The malted milk balls are homemade. Yum. The pecan caramel turtles need no explanation. Yum. I am quite the expert on tasting chocolate (tasting it, not making it) and I don't think I've ever had chocolates as good as these. DH and I stop in occasionally if we're making a trip down south from up here and every time we do I think, man, I really should order some of these online when I get home. I love the little house, all decorated in chocolate stuff (regalia in addition to chocolate). They have a ton of samples and encourage you to taste them - tricky ladies - they know with a smile as soon as you taste their goodies, you'll buy as many as you can. I loved the pecan toffee, orange truffle, passion fruit truffle and wild woman truffle (wow), but the Snooky was my favorite. Melted in my mouth and the flavors. It's hard to describe. After you've tasted such good chocolate, it's hard to go back to any other. DH enjoyed the peanut butter and chocolate fudge, too. So, before stopping over for pie at the Koffee Kup in Hico I stopped at the chocolate store. The store is really small and filled with cutesy seasonal items. Really quaint-appears to have once been an old home. The prices are really high, but most chocolate stores are the same. My only real gripe is that they had only two candies that were made of white chocolate. The display case is a little small and I just felt there wasn't much selection. The fudge was good. We drove 30 minutes on a Friday to visit this place around 1 PM, only to get there and find they were closed for inventory. Their website did not mention anything about being closed during this time. I would recommend either not doing inventory during normally open hours or at least stating somewhere on your website that you are closed during a certain time and day for inventory. My husband used to travel for work and brought me chocolate from different countries and I'd always say no chocolate is better than See's - until I tasted Wiseman's chocolate...there is no better chocolate! I had some time to kill in Hico and someone suggested a place that served pie. I'm not a huge fan of pie but I saw right next to it was a chocolate place. Now I'm not a huge fan of chocolate either but I thought I would give it a try and figured if any place was going to turn me into a fan it was this specialty shop and I was right! It's almost overwhelming how much chocolate is in this adorable old house. I didn't even know where to start! They had a few things you could sample, which I did of course. They had such cute apparel and all kinds of things for a true chocolate lover that I would definitely recommend this shop to all my sweet-tooth friends. I ultimately picked out a variety pack so I could try it all and I think I've had a dark chocolate addiction ever since. My only complaint was the staff. I was the only person in the shop and I had to have had a look of being totally lost and overwhelmed. Yet, the staff person standing behind the counter never asked if I wanted to sample anything, give suggestions or anything. Maybe I'm asking too much but I would have loved to have someone help me figure out what I really liked or at least give me some information/tips/history/SOMETHING. This stuff is pricy, with good reason, but wish I could have gotten a little more of an experience. Although, lord knows how much I would have bought if someone had really engaged me! read more

The most delicious and luxurious chocolates I've ever treated myself too! I discovered this gem on my way from Temple to Stephenville! While we were there, my mom took a spill on the front steps. We were tempted to go back to the car to take care of it, but the staff was so hospitable and kind and got her all fixed up. Little things like that make the huge difference in customer service. Five Stars. If I could squeeze in another one I would. The shop is in a beautifully refurbed Victorian home. The displays are all unique antiques, immaculately clean and brilliant. The staff all have that unmistakable southern charm, very helpful, very friendly and well versed in their products. And the chocolates. OMG...the chocolates. These are simply the best I've had in years. Second only to the ones I had at La Maison du Chocolate in Upper East Side of Manhattan. And a very, VERY close second at that. Maybe they are even better, after all I haven't been to La Maison in years. They have many unique flavors as well as some old favorites. All of them are obviously well thought out and then flawlessly executed with a healthy dose of love and passion. The flavors are perfectly balanced, even ones that one would think might clash move across your palate in perfect harmony. My personal favorite is the Love Potion - Ancho, Chipotle and Cinnamon in dark chocolate, none to assertive, beautiful equilibrium with a mild picante burn at the end. Positively transcendental. I kid you not. Be sure to sample their drinking chocolate as well. I'm sure you'll want to leave with a box of that as well. All their products are reasonably priced considering the quality of the craftsmanship. Ultra-premium chocolate is very expensive to produce both in cost of product and the time required to really do it right. The have a glassed in studio in the rear of a cute little gift and clothing boutique called Bliss Living just a couple blocks away. Be sure to stop in and watch these masters at work. I knew it would be true love before I even walked in. Sometimes you can judge a book by it's cover. The shop is in the cute little town of Hico, in a beautiful Victorian house across from the Koffee Kup. Words fail me when it comes to describing the delectable goodies housed within. I am THE chocoholic, my husband always says I will eat anything so long as it contains chocolate. Now I have been to Belgium, which boasts the world's finest chocolate, and this place in Hico, TX is right on par with any purveyor in Brussels. The fudge is seriously some of the best I've ever had, and Wiseman's has put toffee on my radar, something I wasn't really into before, nor do I think it will be matched anywhere else. So worth the drive from Dallas. Had a great day checking out all the shops and antiques, but this place is Hico's crown jewel. read more

They make their chocolates and other candy from scratch, and you can tell, because it doesn't have that processed flavor to it. It is a bit pricy, but definitely worth the money. So cute. We went on a tour at their "factory" where the magic happens. They do a brief history on the chocolate and a brief tutorial on how the chocolate is made into the various flavors that they offer. Then we got to see all of the different sections of the store, the marble, the experimentation room and such. Our tour was an unofficial tour so maybe if you schedule on, it will be more eye opening. Or not. Anyways the chocolate we tasted was so smooth and silky we went to the their nearby store right afterwards and bought $40 worth of it to take with us. read more
