I had read this shop was getting some negative reviews, so I wanted to take the time to write some words of appreciation for a good experience I am having. My artist is Kayleigh, and she has been working on a thigh piece for me since late summer. A few things I appreciate about Kayleigh are this: 1. Quick to be seen - Within 10 mins of arriving to the shop, I am seen and we start the appointment right away. A few years ago, I had this one tattoo artist (at a different shop) who I had waited months to see, who would then make me wait hours before the appointment even started - only to have maybe a 2 hour session (when I had saved up for many more hours! SO annoying). The work was well worth the wait but this still left a bad taste in my mouth. I got tired of waiting around for appointments and wasn't happy with the progress of the tattoo so I took a break from appointments with this artist and unfortunately as a result of that, I have a half finished tattoo (her wait list is even longer than before so who knows when it will get finished). Bottom line, I feel that Kayleigh is super considerate and respectful of my time (this brings me to my next points) 2. SUPER efficient - I have been doing 2 hour sessions, as that's what I have been able to afford/sit for. My biggest pet peeves in tattooers are those who take forever to do a tattoo and then don't even get much done (see above). Or, those who text or take smoke breaks while a client is getting tattooed (I've had both and they're both extremely annoying!). Kayleigh gives me her undivided attention and instead tattoos straight through the whole time, which I can't say enough how much I appreciate! I always feel she gets so much done during each of my appointments. The piece is almost finished, and I am super happy with its progress. I thought it was going to be a long drawn out process to finish but this hasn't been the case at all. 3. Accommodating schedule - Kayleigh's schedule has been very flexible and in sync with my availability. Another huge pet peeve I have with tattooers are those long wait lists - some artists are booked months in advance but this is not the case with Kayleigh. I have been able to see her every month or two tops (not because she isn't available but because of things on my end). I am very happy I have been able to see her consistently as it's allowed me to get the piece done in a timely manner! 4. Really easy to talk to! Kayleigh is wicked laid back and cool. Through chatting, I learned we had some things in common and I feel the conversation made for a more pleasant experience while getting tattooed. I highly recommend Kayleigh! She is one of the best tattoo experiences I have ever had and I would definitely get more work by her. Thank you so much for everything, you rock! xo read more

My husband and I visited Salem for our honeymoon this past October. We knew we wanted tattoos while there and after researching local shops, decided on Witch City Ink. We could NOT have made a better decision! The shop is quiet, and laid back, which is a welcome change from the craziness that takes place all down Essex St. We walked in and were greeted by Steve, who was friendly and helpful. After telling him what we wanted (two sugar skulls) he quoted a very reasonable price and was accommodating in setting our appointment. The day of our appointment, we walked in and were recognized and greeted. P.J., the artist, greeted us and showed us 4 fantastic designs he'd sketched. The one I chose was perfect, and my husband chose another, but wanted to add one small change. P.J. was totally fine with that, and went back to adjust it quickly. The shop is clean, and P.J. was a saint. He's hilarious and sweet, and though that machine of his screams like an angry chainsaw, he's incredibly gentle. He was talkative and fun but professional, keeping his focus on the tattoo. He did mine first, quickly and gently, and did the exact same with Dennis. The linework is perfect, the colors scream out at you, and they've healed quickly and with no fuss. We've already decided to come back to Salem for our anniversary, and will DEFINITELY get tattooed again here. Witch City Ink is so awesome I wish I could teleport it home to Kansas City, so P.J. could do all of my tattoos. I got my first tattoo here by Natan Alexander and I could not be more pleased. There's a difference between a tattooer and a tattoo artist and this guy is definitely an artist. I came to him with an idea and a reference picture and he used his creative abilities to custom design an absolutely beautiful piece. So many people have told me that even though they don't like tattoos they love the one I got because it's legit art. The atmosphere was also very friendly, clean, and professional. Some shops kind of have a scary/biker feel to them but not this one at all. The minute I walked in I felt comfortable almost like i was around friends not people I had just met. The staff was also extremely friendly and I could not have gone to a better place for my first tattoo. I really could not recommend this place more especially if it's your first tattoo. My experience here was just amazing even though under the armpit killed. Tattoos last for a lifetime and Natan gave me one that I will forever be proud to wear. It was a little expensive but when it comes to something thats forever springing for the highest quality is a better idea then bargain shopping and if you let them know u have a budget they'll work something out they're pretty understanding about that. I've now been tattooed at Witch City Ink 3 times. First by Matt, second by Molly, and now by PJ. Every time I've been in the staff has been friendly and helpful with taking my idea and making it amazing. I've been to 4 different shops now and my most recent experience here has been one of the best tattoo experiences I've had. My friend and I went in with ideas of what we wanted. PJ based a beautiful tattoo around what my friend already had done on her back. Somewhat soon into my friends tattoo she wasnt feeling well, PJ immediately stopped what he was doing concerned for her and went to get her some water and didnt start back up until she was feeling better. An hour later and it came out amazing. Then he took a picture I brought in and drew out the "tattoo" version of the picture. It came out great and I was so pleased. The whole time he made us feel very comfortable, laughing and sharing our experiences of being tattooed and places we've been. At the end he provided the aftercare instructions and a travel size bottle of lotion to treat our new tattoos. He guarantees his work and if we need anything touched up like some coloring or lines, he does it free. The tattoos were reasonably priced although the shop minimum is $100. This isn't bad unless you're getting something small, which I got a 2 line, small colored heart a few years back which shouldn't have cost that much. But in the end I will definitely be going back for more. read more

Witch City Ink is one of the most professional, clean and well-run shops I've ever been to. I recently moved from NYC to the Salem area and WCI came highly recommended from a friend. I truly loved my shop down in NYC on St. Marks, but WCI is my new favorite. I'm a fanatic about cleanliness and WCI doesn't disappoint. Not only is the facility very clean, but your artist will explain everything to you before they begin. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly as well. I had a cross with bat wings tattooed under my right bicep and they took the time to go through many different options on placement and design beforehand. Natan was my artist and he is extremely knowledgeable in the art of tattooing. I truly enjoyed chatting with him during the 2 hours plus. Also, a shout-out to Micah, the apprentice at the shop. He's a great guy and was super helpful with scheduling, paying, etc. I hope to have him shed some ink on me in the future. All in all, a great experience. I will be back for another one in the near future, I'm sure. If you're going to get work done anywhere in the North Shore area, I'd recommend at least a trip into WCI. I absolutely love Witch City Ink! I've had all my tattoo's done there and I always leave with a smile on my face feeling so happy and confident. The artist I go to is K and she has such an amazing energy and is very helpful in making sure your tattoo's looks the best. The other artists are just as wonderful and welcoming and take the time to make sure you are set up with an artist who would be the best to do the style of the tattoo you want. I also find that when I don't exactly know how to implement an idea I have that K and any of the other artists are more than happy to take the time to figure it out with you and make sure you get something you really love. My fiance' has been to Witch City Ink as well and goes to Larry, he is very personable and always makes the experience memorable. Heather who works on the front desk and answers most of the calls is also very welcoming and really add's to the positive vibe of the shop when you walk in. I haven't had the chance to get to know everyone yet, but to anyone who asks's me where I go to get my tattoo's done I always highly recommend Witch City Ink. I recently walked into Witch City Ink upon recommendation of a friend who'd recently gotten a tattoo there. I met artist Matt Maguire, and explained (awkwardly) what I had in mind. I knew what I wanted the tattoo (my first ever, and I'm 44) to say, but I really didn't know what I wanted it to look like. Matt's ideas were awesome. And when I returned a few hours later to see what he came up with, I was blown away. It's difficult to explain what an unforgettable experience that was - getting my first tattoo from Matt at WCI. He's a tremendous artist, from conceptualizing the design through my words, to actually doing the work. Oh, since this is a review, please let me say that shop is beautiful (reminded me of the shops you see on those TLC tattoo shows, only better). I met Natan, the owner, while I was there... he was doing an amazing dragon tattoo on another guy, and he's very interesting to talk to. Anyway, I could probably write another 1,000 words, but I'll stop. I think it's safe to say there is not another shop like Witch City Ink on the North Shore. I have been searching for the "perfect" tattoo artist for 6+ years. I have finally found them! I went to Witch City Ink because my customers keep raving about them. I was wary and did not know what to expect. For the first time I was spoken to like I was an equal. The artists were not pretentious assholes ripping you off. My artist took my picture and asked if he could re-draw it and add dimension to it. He also added some little things I mentioned. I left with an appointment, completely excited. Although excited, I was still nervous because it was a new artist and establishment. A couple of days later I had my tattoo done. It was a relaxed atmosphere and I was offered a pillow (i had to lay face down for a tattoo on my calf). Part of the way thru I was offered water and asked if I was ok. I didnt have to listen to death metal (like the other 3 times i was inked). Thank god. I still enjoy looking at my new ink. It is so detailed that everytime I look at it I still find little things I didnt notice before! It exceeded all of my expectations. Hands down: favorite body mod experience. I can't say enough good things about this place and about the artist that did my tattoo. From the moment I walked in the shop everyone was really friendly and helpful, and there is information all over the front desk on how to care for your tattoo - they really want to make sure your tattoo looks amazing for years. Larry Allen did my tattoo and he's incredible. We spoke beforehand on generally what I wanted, and we texted back and forth leading up to the appointment. He was great about sending me info whenever I asked and was really responsive. When I got to the shop, he was all ready for me - almost no wait time. We went over the design and he walked through everything that was going to happen, which was helpful since the last time I got a tattoo was thirteen years ago(!) Throughout the process he was patient, responsive and had a really good read on when he should switch areas so I didn't go crazy. His work was exceptional. The finished piece is unreal and I couldn't be happier. This place is clean, professional, friendly, and their artists are awesome. If you're looking for a tattoo, this is definitely a spot you should check out. read more

I went to Witch City Ink after having a HORRIBLE experience at another local tattoo shop. Out of respect, I will not write their name on here. When I contacted Witch City Ink through email explaining what happened, attached the picture of the tattoo, and what I wanted done,. Jami got back to me immediately and said the words I wanted to hear, "We can absolutely help you" and I got an appointment that very day with Steve. I walked in, and WOW, what a difference the atmosphere is at WCI than at this other shop. The place was beautiful, clean, semi-private rooms, and the vibe there was very welcoming. Steve listened to my story, what I wanted done, and put me at ease that he could fix my tattoo for me. He was amazing! I love what he did with the color and now, instead of hating my tattoo, I absolutely love it! I will defintely be going back for all of my future tattoos (I have 6) and will recommend them to everybody who asks me. And if anyone asks me about the other shop, I will tell them to run far away from them and go to WCI where they will be treated kindly, professionally, and with dignity. read more

I am new to tattoos and got my second tattoo at Witch City Ink sometime in October; around Halloween. I was lucky to get an appointment being that it was probably their busiest time of the year. Because I was making the drive from NY, there were some back and forth calls with their scheduler, Richard. Richard COULD NOT be any nicer, courteous and professional. My artist of choice was K, whom I communicated with through IG. She was always very responsive. When I arrived and checked in, Heather was working behind the desk and she was also very courteous and professional. I sat down to wait and noticed a flow of people coming in and inquiring. I have to say they were all handled with the same amount of courtesy. I also met Natan. In my 5-hr or so of being there, I never saw anything negative. Everyone working there had great rapport. Atmosphere was relaxing in their semi private tattooing rooms. K was super gentle and I was actually able to drive home immediately after. I am now getting my back done at a more local shop but wish their shop was more like WCI! read more

I am in Salem for the week, dog sitting for my best friend and her husband while they are on vacation. My Grandfather passed away a couple of weeks ago and I knew that I wanted a tattoo in his memory. I have three other tattoos and have been to different places over the years to get them, most good, one VERY bad. I got a good feeling about Witch City, so I went in as a walk-in. Cassandra at the front desk was super friendly and helpful and she set me up with an appointment with Steve for a few hours later, immediately after he was done working on another clients massive back tattoo for almost 5 hours! Mine was just a simple black anchor with my Grandfather's initials, but Steve still could have said no. Luckily, he agreed to have me, and I could not be happier. It came out just how I envisioned it and Steve was really laid back and friendly. As far as tattoo studios go, I would definitely recommend them to any of my friends looking for a place to go. Witch City Ink is by far my favorite place to get tattooed. As someone who likes to plan very meaningful and personal tattoos, I love that it's a custom shop, and each artist has their own art style and process. It's been an honor to get to know everyone, as they are professional, kind, funny, and very cool! I've been tattooed by K. Lenore twice, and have also consulted on a large chest piece over the past couple months. K. Lenore is a true artist. She takes my ideas and thoughts and feelings, and creates these amazing pieces of art that I am honored to have as a tattoo. The conversation is always easy- lots of laughing, and sharing of experiences and ideas. I have also worked with Jaesun. I had a large sleeve peice that was unfinished, and he helped me to modify, finish, and ultimately reclaim the image. Jaesun is an amazing person, professional tattooer, and extremely talented artist. I got my first tattoo this weekend. Based on reviews here and his on line portfolio, I chose Steve at Witch City Ink. I went in a for a consult with him about three weeks ago and gave him several pictures of my beloved late dog Cliff, who I wanted to tattoo on my left arm. He took his time at the consult and said that none of the photos were ideal, but that he could get it done by referencing a combination of several of the photos. I went in on Saturday for the actual tattoo. Steve was thorough, professional, and friendly. He took his time, working meticulously to get it right. The atmosphere in the shop is comfortable and laid back. Everyone is friendly and easygoing. The tattoo came out GREAT! I am more than satisfied with my first tattoo, and it is a fitting tribute to my much-missed dog...a beautiful piece of artwork. The detail and accuracy are stunning -- it is definitely my Cliff. HIGHLY recommend Steve and Witch City Ink for anyone looking for a great tattoo. I can't wait to go back and get my next one! read more

I went in on 9/9/11 to get my tattoo done by Steve Gillespie and it was awesome. I had a simple pentacle with a witch hat off kilter to the left and it turned out amazing. He did a great job transforming my idea and giving it character and flair that I hadn't anticipated. Steve was very quick, done sooner than expected, and professional. Even though he was fast, he made sure to maintain quality and was good enough to explain some tattoo technique while he worked. I went back in to see if he wanted to see the finished result once the bandage was off, but one of the girls in the front office, one with dark hair, told me that he didn't need to see it and that she had done tattoos and it looked fine. I wanted to give Witch City Ink 5 stars, but after being brushed off like that, I am admittedly miffed. Perhaps she was having a bad day, but she didn't even ask Steve if he wanted to see it. Still, I'd go back to see Steve for another tattoo if I'm in Salem, again. Even with the cranky girl he's worth it. read more

I've had work done elsewhere and to be honest they weren't bad experiences so i was going to get some new work done there. but yesterday i had time to get a tattoo i had been planning for months and my regular place was slammed because of the holiday and they apparently were the only ones open in a 10 mile radius... anyway... i went back on-line and did some research and stumbled on this place. wow is all i have to say. this was a last minute "i have time" tattoo and these guys took me in and were extremely accommodating. immaculately clean. Molly was my artist and she was getting ready to go home, but offered to stay and draw on my arm for an hour. her work is impeccable. super friendly (all the staff, but she deserves extra props for modifying my idea to suit my arm without being over bearing/controlling. it's healing beautifully and i will be back to get it colored in. i have a lot of other ideas for ink, but i know one thing is a constant. i will be going here for all of it. read more

Just had work done by Steve, and he is amazing. The tattoo came out even better than I originally imagined it. I am so happy with the work, which of course is the most important part of the experience, but also Steve is a really nice guy whom you can tell cares a lot about his work. A couple of times during the session, he apologized for going over certain areas to brighten up the color, but I laughed and thanked him for his attention to detail. He also had great music playing the whole time, which of course made the experience even more fun. I had been wanting a tattoo from this shop for quite some time and decided on Steve and could not be happier, I will definitely be back within the next couple months for more work from him. I was in town with my lady friends for a wedding and we decided to get some matching tattoos. Getting a tattoo is a big thing, especially when you're out of town and can't ask friends for recommendation. We ended up at Witch City Ink with Paul after a Yelp search and we had a fabulous experience. We all wanted to get a sentence in Thai and I was worried about the artist's ability to basically do permanent Thai calligraphy on my body. At the end of the day, the biggest waste of time was the time I spent worrying. Paul listened to us and chatted to us about ideal sizes and placements and then applied three perfect tattoos on me and my friends. I highly recommend Witch City Ink and Paul. I've got tattoos from 9 different shops in 4 states, and Witch City Ink will be my destination of choice from now on. I had one done by Matt down at Lightwave, so I felt like I could trust Witch City Ink enough to give them a try - and I couldn't be happier. Steve Gillespie was fantastic, sizing the design I had to fit exactly what I wanted to achieve. He was an absolute perfectionist when it came to placement, and just as much so when it came to the inking. Meanwhile, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the shop - especially the work areas, where it matters most - is impeccably clean. Steve's attention to sanitary measures was also 100%. There's no doubt I'll have more tattoos and no question that I'll be going back to Witch City Ink. read more
